In other words 8 lbs in 13 days. On the Atkins diet. In case you wanted a real life example to prove it works, here I am. Gonna keep going until I lose another 40 lbs.

Good luck. I lost almost 40 between Thanksgiving and the beginning of summer. I'm holding steady now...but that's gonna change this week. :) Keep going Sly.

It is easy Putt. First couple of days I was in carb withdraw but everything is rosy now. I bought the book but they have most of the info on the website. You can only have 20 grams of carbs a day for the first 14 days. Miller Lite has 4 grams (lowest of any beer I have seen). That means you could have 5 beers a day if you dont eat anything. Can you do it?

I lost quite a bit in my first week too...then nothing - but the buzz of losing so much in one week kept me going for weeks!

Nice one!

hey sly i know a few people who have lost on the atkins diet, it is tough, but worth it. one woman my mom knows lost damn near 100lbs. and never lost energy while taking off the weight. it is MUCH better than diet pills for your body.

cool...here's a sight with a few message boards I frequented while I was on it. www.atkinsfriends.com

i don't know if you saw 20/20 (or dateline - whichever one Barbar Walters is on) a couple of weeks ago. They did an indepth on the atkins/low carb diets and concluded that they were in fact healthy. as a matter of fact, more research has actually been done on atkins/low card then what has been done for the government food pyramid that says we are supposed to be eating a lot of carbs and little fat...turns out that pyramid was put together by a bunch of lawyers in their early 30's in the early 1970's that didn't know squat about nutrition...some senator latched on to it and pushed it....not even MD's that push the pyramid know how it was derived.

its very simple...your body burns carbs before it burns fat. If your body does not have the carbs to burn then it will burn off fat.

amazing huh?:D

Sly - what's your 'ideal weight'?

Your frame makes it seem like you shouldn't lose a whole lot. 40 lbs seems like a ton.

And - when I saw you Saturday - I did think to myself that you appeared to have lost some weight.

Weight Watchers at our house. We follow the plan without paying them anything. She joined originally, but I have been mooching off what she learned. I used to be skinny runt so losing weight is no big deal. I am trying to help her though.

I've lost 5 since last Tuesday. We're in a contest at work and whoever loses the highest percentage of weight by September 27th wins $550.00. Had to put in 50 bucks. Even if I don't win the money it will be worth it just to lose the weight. Not on any special diet, just watching carbs and staying off the soft drinks and fried stuff.

Oh, and doing extra cardio in the workouts and cutting back on the weight lifting, just doing more reps with lighter weight.

I have been drinking bourbon and diet ginger ale or vodka and fresca at home. Rum and Diet Coke when I am out because that is usually the only carb free mixer they have. Most of your main liquors have no carbs. Only problem is your body will burn alchohol first before fat. Delays weight loss but doesnt really inhibit it.

Good question. I found 186 to be my "ideal weight". But at 215lbs now...I can't imagine what I'd look like at 186. Anyone have an accurate chart?

slydevl
08-05-02, 04:39 PM
I have no idea what my ideal weight is. I will go strictly by appearance. I was 240 and pretty solid when Elizabeth and I started dating. I crested 300 which spurred me to go on the diet. If I can get down to 250 I will be thrilled. If I am still flabby at that point then I will keep going.

No doubt the Adkins diet works, but it may be at an expense. My buddy developed problems with his gall bladder as a result. He got dangerously sick. He lost weight, but swore to never do it again. Just be careful.....

if you don't do it right, you can burn muscle instead of fat...which slows your metabolism and if you go off the diet, you'll get fatter than you were before.

Exactly! One thing that is very important is to eat something if you feel hungry. IF not your body goes into starvation mode and burns muscle instead of fat. You should never go more than 6 hours in between meals or snacks. Also, drinking lots of water is important to preventing gall bladder, kidney, and liver damage. The book also recommends you take a vitamin supplement (I am) and small amounts of fiber (I also am). If not you could experience muscle cramps and constipation. I wouldn't recommend somebody try this unless you read the book or website.

Meat and water.

Dat's what we 'sposed to eat yo.

Tiorted Snoil
08-05-02, 05:20 PM
the book doesn't do a good job of explaining where the bulk of the weight you are initially losing comes from. It is coming from muscle glycogen...which are basically carbs stored in your muscles. each gram of glycogen has 4 grams of water with it...so when your muscle uses the glycogen (which it will before fat) it takes that water with it....which is how you get 10 pounds lost in week and things like that. ...if you workout it is therefore a lot easier to get dehydrated...so make sure you drink your water. your weight loss will slow down after the glycogen is gone but it will be all fat, sounds like you are past that point now anyways.

The Atkins diet is great if you don't get tired of the restrictions. If you can believe it, I lost 15 pounds in about 2 months on Atkins, but I had trouble eating a variety of foods. Just seemed like nothing appealed to me after a while.

However, I got into the habit of eating only 3 times a day, which is what I recently have started up again. I'm down 5 pounds from about 2 weeks ago.

I've lost 40 since April on the FedEx workout plan: Eat whatever you want and bust your ass for 5 hours a night and the best part - make money at the same time! I am seriously thinking about going full time and getting the most I can out of it. :)

Sly, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm really impressed that you're sticking to the Adkins Diet. I have been looking it over for awhile now. I just can't get my mindset past the coffee thing. I take my coffee with sugar and creamer...caffeine, the last horizon of addiction.:D

The best of luck to you. I really would like to try it.

I have drank less than 20 cups of coffee in my life so that is not a problem. When I set my mind to something I don't have a problem accomplishing it. I have quit smoking successfully about 30 times now. just kidding I have been smoke free for over two years. Simply went cold turkey. quit drinking one time for six months just to prove I could but I am not ready to quit drinking yet. The diet has caused my to drasctically reduce my drinking though. Nope all it took was for me to realize what a fatass I was/am and make the decision to do something about it (something I had never really been convinced about before) much like those of you who decided you had a problem with drinking. I dont think I will have a problem reaching my goals.

I dropped the caffeine for about two days....it will still work. I work with a couple of diabetics who claim that caffeine had no effect on insulin...atkins claims it does which is why he doesn't allow it on his diet.

sorry Dr Atkins. I follow his basic concept but I'm not cutting out my coffee in the morning. Equal and non dairy creamer work just fine for me.

I agree about the caffeine effecting insulin. I see it in DH when he drinks coffee.

Also, I'm wondering how this will ultimately affect DH? The main thing I can think of is lower insulin dosages since we base his rates on the amount of carbs he eats.

Any thoughts on this, Snail?

there is a whole chapter in the book about diabetes and how to do the diet if you are diabetic....I didn't read it since it didn't apply to me. you can go to www.atkinsfriends.com and search the boards for diabetes related threads.

i saw the show. I don't remember them coming to the conclusion that it was healthy (maybe i missed that part), but the reporter who tried it said he was losing weight...and it was the best diet ever since he could sit down and eat steak and pototoes. Definitely a good report he did. They coverered all the pros and cons, the negatives and the positives. It works for some people and not for others. And yes, there is more research going to be done on this particular diet.

Two girls I work with and I went on this diet a year or so ago. The pounds just dropped off them almost immediately. I did not lose one pound and I did not cheat not even once. They admitted to cheating and after 12 days one had lost 6 pounds and the other one had lost 10! After 12 days with no cheating and no results I said the hell with it.

The Atkins diet isn't really all that healthy. You are robbing your body of it's main energy source. Carb's are the most readily useable energy source that the body takes in.

Since your body isn't taking any carb's in then it will burn it's small source of stored carb's and then start burning fat. However, once you've hit your goal and start eating normally then your body will immediately start making it's main energy storage compound....FAT. Unless you have raised your metabolism and/or permanently changed your eating habits then your body will go back to business as usual.

The best way to lose weight is to eat right and exercise. If you create a calorie deficit of 500 calories then you will lose about 1 pound a week. This slower rate of loss allows your skin time to adjust it's elasticity to the reduced volume. Drastic weight loss leads to loss flabby skin.

You can create the 500 calorie deficit by either increasing calorie usage (exercise) and/or eating less/eating low fat and low calorie.
