To name an all-star team of Post 501 players is almost impossible. There are too many players we don't even know about. Sure, we can throw some names out there, but some that have already been mentioned were really not all-star caliber. There are others too that should be mentioned....like Brian Sheets and Bobby Helms from Kannapolis, and Jason Sarvis and Mike Reynolds from NWC. But we are only scratching the surface.....need some old-timers on the list for sure!

I played against Hut Smith, Andy Smith, and Maurice Blakeney. All were very good. In high school we (East Rowan) went 2-4 against them. In Legion (Rowan), we never lost.....funny how that works. Ben Johnson was also on those teams. Mike Morton (UNC Football, Oakland Raiders) also played for A.L Brown in high school, but I don't remember seeing him in legion.

pitched and I believe won the Legion World Series for K-Town back in the 50's. He was our pitching coach for Post 51 in Concord in the early to mid 70's and would
keep us entertained for hours with his baseball tales.
I wish he was here today and could post on this board.
Ya'll would hear some baseball stories!
He had a glove he could fold up and stuff in his back pocket and he would roam around the outfield during BP and tell jokes and stories. Then every now and then he would whip out that glove and catch a fly ball. He'd look around and say "OK BOYS, that's how you do it"!
I enjoy lists like this as long as its all in fun, and keeping in mind everyone has an opinion, so nobody's right or wrong.
With that in mind, you can't leave off the GREATEST athlete and possibly baseball player EVER to come out of Kannapolis, played on the 61 state championship team, still playing softball today at his age (60+ ?), and could possibly walk out on the legion field tonight and still good enough health that he would compete for a starting position on either team in tonight's game.
Harry Mills
Also I haven't seen Brett Bartles (2004) name mentioned who played 3 years at Duke University, now playing Single A minor league ball in Billings, Montana. Pretty decent stick and wheels.
Btw, thanks again CountryBoy for the burger the other night. I got you next game.

No problem, it sure was good seeing you again. Trying to find a way to K-Town tonight. Got weeds to mow and
used all my excuses up on the CWS!
If I come up with a good one, I'll look you up!

ok, you've got to send me a private email and let me know who you are, cause only a true Post 51 Player would know about the uniforms, the blonde bomber and how about the "Silver Bullet"? Probably don't remember, but
I wore number "17" on that team.
Wish I had gone to see him, got too caught up in
making a living and didn't take time to smell the roses!
Countryboy, I believe you and vaginosis were teammates for 51.

Yep, we have traded pm's and indeed were and still are
teammates! That's the good thing about baseball, we played together in '72 and are still good teammates!
YEP, YEP, YEP! Old Vaginosis hit the cover off the ball!
He would be on my top ten list of any team!!!!

Played on the 71 team.Gerald always kept us entertained. On one of many long bus trips he told of pitching in a legion game at Charlotte. The 1st batter hit a hard one hopper straight back to him on the mound. He threw the batter out at first and then said he started to talk to himself. He walked around the mound and said to himself...Gerald that batter hit the ball pretty hard. You better bare down or they are going to wear you out tonight. He proceeded to strike out the next 26 batters.A perfect game with 26 strikeouts.
He loved to stand in the outfield during batting practice and tell stories....mostly about women and what he had to eat that day.
