I'm going to post this here and in the tech forum also because I'm not sure where it belongs, or where I'll get the best advice.

I'm ready to invest in a real camera, digital SLR I guess unless somebody has better advice, so have at it.

I'm prepared to spend up to $2,000 for the camera, if I need to go more I probably will, if I can get off for less all the better.

I want the capablility of adding a super zoom lens at somepoint also.

advice?

i gave you a set-up for shooting outdoors in good light (thinking sports). you've got a full range. indoors, you can use your 50mm lens as it's f/1.8 and will let in a LOT of light.

since this may be your first foray into SLR land, i'd also recommend the book "understanding exposure (revised edition)" -- it's only $15, so it fits in your budget.

be sure to buy off amazon so you won't have any tax.

you may get some deals on shipping, too.

also, gave you a monopod for extra stabilization. an extra battery to swap out and a 2GB card. you'll probably want to add more cards.

i didn't put any filters in there, but you could get a UV filter to protect the end of your lenses (i don't use one, though).

the camera bag should fit your equipment, but check it out on the tamrac site. there's room in there for a lot of goodies.

when you get better, you'll want to upgrade your camera body to the canon 30D and/or buy some L-quality lenses (canon's pro-grade, what i use).

i love photography.

i did a lot of comparison before choosing the canon system. i had shot nikon most of my career, but the canon CMOS sensor is superior to nikon's -- especially at higher ISOs.

According to this part of the review, done in 2004, the Nikon , at iso 1600, the reviewer gave the nod to Nikon. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/page23.asp
I don`t have either one and don`t really care as long as WP gets something that does the job for him.
The camera I use presently is a Canon(PowerShot S2 IS) and I bought it for its 12X optical zoom and the fact it uses standard AA batteries.

that's the older model 300d. even that was shooting at a third of a stop faster than the nikon.

plus, the d70 will run you about $500 more than the rebel XT.

my dad has lenses up to that size for his nikon F that he never uses. I've been trying to snag the whole setup for ages.

I would like to unload my N70. I bought the D70 and it is a fantastic camera. If I had 7 grand I'd buy that monster lens too.
