I think that the NPC will belong to W. Iredell this year. Mooresville graduated most of their team that had the amazing three year run including the 2004 NCHSAA 3A Championship, sandwiched in between a pair of losses to eventual 3A State Champs FT Foard in the Western Regional Finals in 2003 and 2005. Three of those players are now playing D1 Volleyball.....
Noell Dyk - UNC
Kristina Gallahan - W. Virginia
Ashlyn Morris - UNC Wilmington
Mooresville also lost long time head coach Nancy Dilks to retirement. Nancy has been at Mooresville her entire 30 year career and brought 3 NCHSAA State Volleyball Titles to Mooresville Sr. High during her tenure. Nancy will be giving assistance to new head coach and former asst. to her (also a former member from one of her State Champs) Kara Kerley, who will take over the helm at Mooresville. But as fate would have it, Kara just had a baby. So we are definately in a state of transition here in MSHS Volleyball land.
Good luck to the WI Warriors and do the NPC proud!

If both Enka and West Iredell make it to the regional finals they will play on October 31, with the winner advancing to Raliegh to play in the 3A state championship game. But that means both teams must make it threw the first four rounds with out being elimanated. Alot of volleyball left to be played, but its definetly a possibility.

For the second consecutive year the Person Rockets from Roxboro NC have won the PAC-6 4A conference title. The Rockets (22-1 overall 14-0 PAc-6) defeated a very good Chapel Hill team (22-2 overall 12-2 Pac-6) 3 to 1 on Senior Night in Roxboro. The Rockets were taken down by Chapel hill in the first game which was very tough 25-21. But the Rockets rallied behind the packed house of Rocket Rowdies and took the next three games 25-14, 25-17, and 25-9.
The Rockets will now play in the 4A playoffs this Saturday at home against the Fifth Seeded team from the TRI-8 conference at 7:00pm. The Rockets will be trying to reach the Sate 4a Finals for the second year in a row.

Providence (CLT) moves into Round Three versus Weddington tomorrow, October 27. It's been a great season for the girls with only one loss - to Person H.S. at the Great Eight Tournament on August 25. The Panthers have lost only four additional games since that night - two to Myers Park (the first two and then an amazing comeback to win 3 games to 2), one to South Meck, and then another to Myers Park at their second conference match up. Congrats to all the teams that have finished their seasons and to those who are still playing. The playoffs seem to be full of great teams and great girls!

all you volleyball guru's: from the posts, some of the HS's obviously have great v-ball programs. do your girls play any kind of club volleyball in addition to HS?
I saw an eastern HS v-ball coach quoted that his team had run into a very strong team in the playoffs that had several girls playing club volleyball; & he wanted to encourage his girls' to do that to build up the program to "the next level". I know those girls and most are also softball players that play serious travel softball on weekends in most parts of the year. so what came to mind for me was where do kids and parents draw the line? there's only so many hr's in a day, so many days in a week, so many weeks in a yr for these multi-sport athletes.........know what I mean??

Yes, most teams that have very good v-ball programs do play club ball. On our team as a matter of fact, nine out of the ten girls played jo ball last winter. I know it is a real pain on the parents, especially if they play basketball or softball to. But they are girls on our JO team that do play other sports. My daughter plays volleyball year-round and nothing else. But you are absolutely correct, it does take alot of time and money. But also I think club ball is where the girls really learn to play the game. High school coaches just don't have the time to teach what JO coaches teach. So I guess you have to ask yourself and your daughter what she likes to play best. My daughter chose volleyball, and in return has landed a athletic scholarship to play in college. I really feel she would have never accomplished this if she had only played high school ball. And alot of high school coaches are now telling there girls to play club ball, simply because if they don't there program will never compete with the schools whose girls do.

I watched the best volleyball match I have ever seen last night. The problem is my team, West Iredell high school, lost. The Warriors and SW Guilford Cowgirls took turns at delivering heavy blows at each other. It was shameful for either to have to lose such a great match. But in the end the Cowgirls stopped West Iredells 28 game win streak in five games, by scores of 21-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12. West Iredell ends its season at 28-1 while SW Guilford is 25-1. The first game of these three games was a war between two powerhouse teams. It was probabaly the best volleyball match I have ever witnessed. The game was a dead tie for most of the match with the Rockets finally pulling out the game one victory 34-32.
Once the Rockets claimed game one they pretty much cruised in games two and three 25-15 & 25-13.
Rocket Coach Sandy Matthews was quoted in the paper this morning that there was some"College Volleyball" played in Roxboro on this night.
It was awesome to watch the Rockets and to see the great chemistry this team has.
The Rockets are hungry and are looking to get back to the State 4A fianls again!!
GO ROCKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!:congrats:

all you volleyball guru's: from the posts, some of the HS's obviously have great v-ball programs. do your girls play any kind of club volleyball in addition to HS?
I saw an eastern HS v-ball coach quoted that his team had run into a very strong team in the playoffs that had several girls playing club volleyball; & he wanted to encourage his girls' to do that to build up the program to "the next level". I know those girls and most are also softball players that play serious travel softball on weekends in most parts of the year. so what came to mind for me was where do kids and parents draw the line? there's only so many hr's in a day, so many days in a week, so many weeks in a yr for these multi-sport athletes.........know what I mean??
Yes EastofRaleigh it is the same here in Roxboro and Person County. With the excitment of our highschool team here the interest in Traveling or Club volleyball has grown tremendously. Everyone of the Rockets has played or is playing travel ball when not playing for the Highschool. And there efforts and success from travel ball is a big part of therer success in highschool. The level of play is tremendous.
I my self have been coaching a travel team for three years now trying to help prepare my daughter (who loves volleyball only) for highschool and beyond. I myself have recruited former and current players to help "teach" my girls the fundamentals and what it takes to get better and prepeare for highschool.
My daughters (she is 8th grade) middle school team just went undefeated this season winning 24 consecutive matches and winning there conference. This is directly contributed to there success and hard work during travel ball. This school team also will be moving on to play for the Rockets I hope!!! I hope because of these efforts volleyball in Person County will be strong for several more years for the Rockets. And our highschool coach Sandy Matthews is very very grateful for the people who are involved in this because she gets the longterm benefits of this. She also is very supportive of our youth in this county and all the girls would die to play for her!!! She is a great person as well as a great coach.
AND no I do not have a regular life anymore......traveling around all the time...spending money....watching my daughter play.......I wouldn't change a thing!!!!!! And wouldn't miss a minute of it either!! I did the same for my son and baseball and he is now forutnate enough to play college baseball......needless to say I have enough video of my Son and Daughter to last me along time when I get old and need something to do or watch......and God has blessed me and my family to have these opportunities and I try to give something back to other youth and make there dreams come true!!! Not to mention I know where my kid is and who they are with!!! Sports is a good thing for youth in my opinion!!!!

EastofRaleigh, Yes I have two girls on my team that play travel softball and the same two also play middleschool basketball.
At least travel softball doesn't conflict with volleyball to much until after school ball in the spring. Several of my volleyball players play middleschool softball but we don't have any problems with travel volleyball as those tournaments are played on Saturdays and is one day only. And also every other weekend. I do try to allow during our travel season some "down time" so they can be kids...which I think is important also. When we travel we try and do things as a group that doesn't involve volleyball at times to make the total experience fun and this also helps to build team chemistry, Just my humble opinion.

I'm kinda confused about the above bracket. How can the regional final pairings be set before the semi-finals have been played? Or am I missing something here?

I think LS meant to copy the headers from the paper. The top Semi final is for Tennis and the lower is for the regional final for volleyball.
LS doesn't make too many mistakes....................known her for years:band:

Anyways, good luck to Enka. I know you all have been knocking at the door for the last few years and I hope you are playing for the title in Raleigh this time around. We went in 2003 and had a blast! The wife and I stayed for every match that day and saw the western teams sweep the championships.
Its also good to see former Mooresville assistant (now head coach at Starmount) John Simons vying for another state title. This would be his third since taking the head coaching job there! BUT, they must face a tough, tough W. Henderson team before making plans. These teams from Henderson play outstanding volleyball and seem to be in Raleigh every year.

Yes Village you are correct. Providence will be a great team to play and it should be a great match between in my humble opinion two of the best teams in the state. And as you stated it is a great honor just to be in the Championship game!!!
They met very early in the year and Person came out on top but I know and bet that both teams are much better and different now then they were then.
Looking at all the Brackets there will be some great volleyball played saturday at Reynolds!! Good luck to all the teams and may everyone travel safely!!!:newsmile31:

Village Idiot, I'm still trying to recover from all of yesterdays excitement!!!
Yes the Person Rockets Volleyball team is STATE 4A Champions!!!!!!!!!
And it was muched earned yesterday as Providence was a tough team and very very good!!
you could tell from the get go this was going to be a war between to powerhouse teams and would not be a easy feat to win. With this being a rematch from last years final you could tell both of these teams were not in awe of the other and it started in game one!!
In game one it was a war all the way through the match with it staying tied all the way until the Panthers were able to snatch game one 23-25 on a couple of Rocket errors.
The Rockets down as many as 7 points in game two battled back to tie the game and going to there big hitter Amanda Roberson got a couple of kills to take game two 26-24.
Game three found the Rockets down 10-2 and the Rockets bared down and battled back to tie the game at 19. From that point the Rockets took game three 25-23. From that point I believe the Rockets took the momentum for good!
Game four again found the Rockets down 12-4 and the Rockets battled back AGAIN to tie the set at 18. All of a sudden the sister tandum of Megan and Katie Tatum came alive and with beautiful sets from Wingate signee setter Amanda Clark the Tatum duo put the Panthers away with four consective kills to win game four and the Championship 25-20.
Amanda Clark was named MVP.
The Person Rocket Volleyball team brings home to Person County the first State Championship trophy in school history in any sport!!!
Jimmy "V" would have been proud of the Rockets for there "never give up " attitude and there toughness.
And the support that was shown by the people of Person County that filled one whole side of Reynolds was awesome!!!!! Probably a couple thousand people from Person Co.
I remember last year the Providence coach telling our Coach Sandy Matthews that she wished she had that kind of support. The youth of Person County LOVES Coach Matthews as she is a great coach but much more she is a great person and the girls would die to play for her!!!
Don't know if the Rockets will make it back next year but don't be surprised if they do!!!

The NCHSAA Volleyball Championships will always be special. I never knew how intense the sport was until my own daughter fell in love with it. She has since gone to college. Now me and the wife still follow the Mooresville team as much as we can. We got to watch former Blue Devil (and 2003 3A State Champ MVP) Noell Dyk on TV yesterday playing (and starting) for the Tarheels as a freshman.
Cherish these memories and give thanks. Congratulations!
