Whats the suggested seed type for planting in a shaded area. I will be seeding in an area that will have new topsoil but has probably never had grass before if that makes a difference.

they make a new "shade blend" seed now but i forget the actual name of the seed. if there are too many trees it may not last though. ive had terrible problems with having too many big trees in the past. the only way i got grass to grow and stay was to cut the trees down.
centipede SUCKS!!!!
i hate my lawn.
put flowerbeds under the trees and save yourself some headache.

It doesn't have to work that well. I am getting it ready to sell and need to at least try. Something is better than what I have now. The flower beds can be a project of the next owner.

Red fescue.
Mix some regular fescue in with it too.

If your selling Bermuda. They'll hate you for life. I personally like fescue or Zoysia. But Zoysia seed is EXPENSIVE and takes forever to grow, same for Zoyzia plugs

I've been told to mix red fescue with rye (not sure if it was a particular rye)

When I was younger I cut grass to make some extra cash. Centipede was the worst grass to cut, period.

I've been told the same thing, just with regular fescue and rye. After I have some trees removed, I'm overseeding with mostly rye with some fescue mixed in.

Rye is supposed to look good in the winter and that is when I'll be showing the house. However the guy who reccomended it us usually mowing his grass in the winter so I guess that is a drawback. His yard looks great though.

Rye is a winter grass. I don't really have any grass at my new house. It's mostly weeds, etc so I'm going to spray for that and then aeriate and then overseed to try and get something to grow. I think I may try one of chipshots soil pulverizers.

Yep this time of year since your trying to establish a lawn you mix the Rye for winter appeal, and fescue for the rest of the year. The Rye will die next spring but by then the Fescue will be going strong. It's pretty common for people with lawns of Bermuda and centipede to over seed with Winter Rye since the Bermudas and centipede turning brown (dormant)in the winter. That's why I prefer Fescue. Stays green but you are not mowing it. You would still need to mow Rye if you throw it out there. Just not that often

depends on what area of the state you live in , assuming you are in NC.
rye grass sucks. grows faster than fescue and ends up looking stalky.
