View Full Version : Rude sales call !

I called a company that had a large full-page ad in a newspaper; they had a free 800 #. They were offering a free consultation & a discount on a common exterior home improvement service & installation. (I won't mention here the specific type of home improvement or the name of the company). Apparently they were a regional company, not a local small business.
Anyway when I called to request the consultation, they asked several questions including who in the household made the purchasing decisions, just myself or me & my wife together. Also they asked if I would be able to make a commitment during their visit and I told them "no, that my wife & I would discuss it & let them know later".
The salesman arrived at the appointed time, & began asking me several questions including the same ones as described above. He also made several calls with his cell phone to the home office, his bosses?, or someone/ about my situation. At this point I was getting impatient & a little concerned. (My wife was not at home ; she was at work at her job). He really was persistant about if I could make the decision today. When I told him once again that I would need to discuss it with my wife before deciding, he put me on his phone with the home office to talk to them & the lady on the phone had the same persistance about the decision factor of just myself or together with my wife. The company preferred to re-schedule to another time that they could present to my wife & I together.
(Keep in mind that the salesman never once got into his sales call with me, never introduced the product, did not take measurements, no pricing, etc during the entire time he was at my house).
By this time this whole scenario really had really rubbed me the wrong way, so after he asked if I could re-schedule to another time with my wife present, I just had had enough and asked him nicely to leave & told him that I did not appreciate his approach and that I did not care to do business with a company with this philosophy.
What do you think of this?; is this type of sales approach common in the home improvement industry? Would like feedback on this situation. Thank you.

Not only was it a rude sales call, it was a stupid one. Nobody in their right mind should be pressing a potential customer to make a commitment to buy before he's even seen the product, received an in-depth sales pitch, and had ALL of his questions answered.
You did exactly what I would've done.

Sounds like Home Depot.

I think you handled it close to perfect. Only difference is I would have kicked him square in the jimmy.
Although this is poor business, think of the contractor. He sends out his guy who probably would spend 1-2 hours going through all the measurements etc only to have you not buy anything. With the amount of work out there they don't want to waste there time talking when they could be working on another job.
Again, not saying what he did was right. Hell we have called companies on what you would consider small to mid-size jobs and they just don't show up. They have no time for little work.
BTW-Write them up on Angies List.

They just went about it in the wrong way. No way in hell am I going out to do all that shit and then rely on the husband to then sell it to the wife. They should have never scheduled unless you were BOTH there.

I planned & scheduled the mtg w/ salesman knowing my wife would not be there. I then planned to take the info gained from the salesman's presentation and discuss it with my wife. We would make a mutual decision & we notify the salesman either yes or no. What's unusual about that scenario?
It just p____ ssed me off that the salesman would not present his product to only me and insisted that my wife be present.

This guy and his company are like amway......they are not at all indicative of the construction industry.....
here's how it is in real construction....contractors are too busy and they reschedule appoints atleast once.....half the companies send out a redneck or immigrant both of which bearly speak the language.....if you get an actual english speaking guy he is there to measure and price only and you will get hit with the slick Willy later in the game or if the company really has it together....Willy will talk to you while the immigrant/redneck measures....Willy will tell you why they are better than the rest....then tell you all the work he has done.....then show you some pictures/brochures......Willy will always tell you that he's NOT the cheapest...but he's the best.......you're paying for quality with Willy....Willy will always go back to the office to prepare a quote....when the price comes you will be shocked.....Willy will call you everyday for a month and finally you will say can you knock something off that and he will cut it in half....if Willy gives you a price onsite...then Willy ain't a Willy...he's a Jimbob and if you are lucky enough to get a Jimbob...then you might want to sign him up....because Jimbob is a dumber version of a Slick Willy....Jimbob will quote something without considering the circumstances and normally gets himself in over his head....this could be good or bad for Jimbob...sometimes he does stuff because he gave you his redneck word...which basically means...if your watching me...I'll do it right...but don't turn your back....or he may hit you up with change orders or extrieees as Jimbob calls them......finally you may get the Lee Davis type....that's the guy that works for Mr. Big.....Lee Davis will come it look and tell you to tear it down and rebuild.....you are screwed.....and thank God you called or the sky would fall....Lee Davis is the ultimate con artist....he will scare the crap out of you and the next thing you know you will be blowing up your house and starting over.....
if you read all that...your a better man than me...

While at work one day they had a salesman call for health insurance. Dont ask me why my boss put me on the phone but I got the idea why afterwords. He started going through his pitch and I sort of let him finish. I asked him for his number because I wanted to talk to my husband about it to see what he had to say. The guy pops up with why do you have to ask him? Im talking to you. I said "so" I need to talk to him because hes the one that handles the money stuff besides I get my health insurance through vocational rehabilitation. I couldnt believe what I heard him say next. He said " I can get you cheaper rates then them." Im like oh yeah? I still need to talk to my husband and hung up on the guy. Im wondering how much cheaper it would of been through him since I dont pay anything through vocational rehabilitation? Maybe I should of asked him if I had to pay for his insurance since he thought he could be cheaper then what I already had but I was pissed at him as it was.

I despise that kind of sales approach, & I usually make it a point to let someone in a managerial role in a company know what put me off.
I can understand that it takes a contractor time & effort to do measurements & come up with a quote; & they don't want to waste their time if the chances of a sale of a worthwhile amount are low. But damn, they got all the information they needed to make that decision with the first phone call for the appointment!
FWIW, I also make sure other people know what company I dealt with & why I was so unhappy with them--just as I make sure other people know when I've had good experiences with a particular company.

I called a company the other day that does the guards over the gutters thing as well as several other things. The person that I spoke with on the phone insisted that me and my husband both be here when the guy same by to talk to us about it. Said that it would take about an hour. The guy was here for 3 hours. The price quoted was a quarter of the value of the house and he got pissed because we wouldn't commit that day. That was Friday.
Monday I get a call back from the company. The boss wants to come out and talk to us. They say that the guy that came out Friday was fairly new and that he works on commission. The boss wants to give us a rock bottom price. I'm betting that this is the same company that you dealt with. The name has a southern flair to it and the salesman was irish. May not be the same saleman but I would bet that the company is the same.

The sales dude wasn't in the house but 5 minutes. The rest of the time he was outside including the time that he was giving his sales pitch.
I'm not giving the name yet because I may still buy from them even thought the sales dude did kind of tick me off. The product that they are selling is outstanding.

I had a rainbow vaccum cleaner guy ask us over and over WHY we didn't want to buy. AS the RAINBOW cleans your carpet BETTER then any other. When I said NO NO NO. He supposedly called his boss and said "She doesn't care if her house is dirty" I said NO I DON"T NOW GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND GET OUT.

Shit like this makes me want to get a shotgun, just for show.
Yeah then after he left, we did a redial and it was a FAKE phone call. Does he think I give a crap if someone I don't even know thinks I don't keep my house "as clean as a rainbow could"
WEll to be honest I was making fun of him too, when he was showing how it blew up balloons and stuff and I said "I'm NOT gonna be getting out a vaccum to blow up balloons" I was pretty hard on him.

I didn't say anything about gutters. I'm looking at replacement windows and replacement and wrapping of fascias. Also a bunch or vinyl wrapping of porch ceilings and such.
I have heard a lot of negatives about the gutter guard things. Yeah stuff doesn't get down in the gutters as bad but the opening on the gutters is reduced so much that they aren't as effective as they are without the gutter guards plus the openings still get clogged. Gutters aren't that hard to clean.
I doubt that a saleman would ever ask me who wears the pants. I usually have them talking to me like I don't know dick and trying to over explain everything like I'm clueless because I'm dickless.
Dixie Homecrafters does have some outstanding windows though. Nice vinyl siding too.

Gutter guards, replacement windows, just do it yourself, you only need a drill and 1/2 a brain, go to Home Depot or Lowe's, buy the materials, read up on how to do it, then just do it. If you're not fat, old, or retarded, you should be able to figure it out, if you are one of the three before mentioned, better bend over, b/c you're gonna get ass raped. As far as wrapping stuff in vynal, wouldn't do it, repair it if it needs to be repaired, or paint it, but that shit is ghetto, you would use vynal if you lived on the East or West sides of town, I'm pretty sure if you're on TBR, your smart enough to not live in those areas, and to not wrap/repair your house in vynal. I installed all new windows at my crib, pretty much by myself, skipped the whole replacement window BS, that shit is ghetto too. Sounds like you need me, too bad I'm busy, get Meatpile over there, he looks pretty handy.

Some of us acquire money easier than we do time. I prefer to spend my time when I'm not working playing. I used to HAVE to do everything myself. As far as the vinyl wrap the repairs will be made first then the wrap comes. It keeps from having to keep spend money and time painting. Look at it this way, if I can earn $150 per hour working and pay somebody $25 per hour for doing repairs on my house then where is my time better spent? If you look at it that way then it real dimb for me to do it myself.
HA! What is it you do..topless dancing?

No, a salesman wont use those words exactly as they're insulting. But that's what he means when he asks or pressures you into making a decision right now, on your own without consulting your wife. Its a salesman tactic, make you feel less of a man by asking if you can make a decision without consulting your wife. They want you to make a decision without talking it over with ANYONE. They're just playing on your manhood to seal the deal.
