North Carolina quarterback Darian Durant will transfer to another school at the end of the spring academic semester.


my guess is that it's south carolina state. div-1aa in his home state, immediate playing time. can it get any worse for bunting?

Bunting has a 3pm press conference scheduled.

There has to be something more to this story. Especially if it ends being SC State. I don't see how he had any possible competition for next years starting job.

Bunting gave him lots of playing time as a freshman, never heard any rumors that they didn't get along. UNC defense may struggle next year, but it looked like Durant and the offense would be the focus of the team next year.

Sounds like academics or one of those home-sick things.

Either way : this sucks!

If that's the case, screw him. He shouldn't be scared to compete for the starting position. He'll look good doing that at the pro level.

One thing I really don't get is why anyone would ever think of leaving North Carolina. I don't think we will ever see him in the NFL anytime soon.

Bear might have something. The original rumor was he wasn't happy with Bunting. Didn't like splitting time with Curry when he had better stats. I HEARD he was transferring to USC. Now SC State? I'd bet grades are involved. If you are worth a damn, you don't go to Division IAA. Got to be grades.

CJ Stephens (the Florida transfer) will probably start. It was no secret that he ran the scout team last year while sitting out and destroyed our #1 defense every time. Durant wanted a guarantee at QB but Bunting wanted and open competition with Stephens. Evidently, Durant didn't think he could beat him out. Buh-bye Darian, and GOOD LUCK!

Dang, I really hate to see this guy go but if it true that he's leaving because he don't want to compete for the starting job then, I like Bunting, wish him the best. I don't know much about Stevens, is he so good that Durant fears the competition? This will be a blow to what was expected to be a promising Offense and, IMO, will make the Heels one dimentional. Oh well, life goes on and this chapter in the Heel's history will pass.

Sounds like Durant just doesn't get along with Bunting. They had an AWFUL recruiting season. Now this.

Possible he will become a Gamecock, but they have several QB's now. Also in the running for a couple of bluechippers.

Here is the story that is going around on Tiderinsider.com. This a email a TI member got from a friend who follows UNC.

Yeah, another spoiled kid basically. Here is the REAL story.

This is simply a case of Durant not wanting to compete. Stephens shredded
our first team defense last year with the scout team and Durant saw that
Stephens would likely win the job. Bunting, new to the media, made the
mistake of saying on his radio show early in the season that he "expected"
that Stephens would be the starter next year. He retracted that and had
recently named Durant the #1 QB heading into Spring Practice.

Durant has been threatening to transfer since he arrived in Chapel Hill
despite the fact that when he hurt himself his senior year of high school,
we were the only big time college that didn't pull their offer. The
following is a chronology of what Durant has put the staff through since he
has been in Chapel Hill:

1. Arrives in Chapel Hill in August, 2000. Doesn't like his place after the
first week of practice. Considers transferring to SC.

2. During the season, as he and Leak are relegated to scout team, Durant is
disenchanted, talks to Torbush about transferring to SC - says that O'Cain
is biased against him.

3. After the coaching change, considers transferring after Bunting brought
on board - not sure of his place with the team.

4. During spring practice 01, doesn't like the fact that he is running
"even" with Leak and Huard. Considers transferring to SC.

5. After Stephens enters as transfer, considers transferring to SC. Connors
talks him out of it.

6. During August practice, Durant not happy with apparent bench (#2) role.
One week before the Oklahoma game, calls his dad to come to Chapel Hill and
pick him up and take him home. Dad comes...talks to Bunting....stays.

7. After Maryland game, Durant and/or his dad complain about backup role
considering Durant "outperforming" Curry in the first two games...threatens
transferring.

8. Bunting makes the infamous radio comment tabbing Stephens as his starter
in 02....Durant talks transfer to SC.

9. Durant's stepmother dies....Durant talks transfer to SC to be closer to
home.

10. During his hosting of an official visitor in December Durant failed to
do what he was supposed to do.....Bunting punished..Durant didn't fulfill
punishment, additional punishment of Durant not being able to leave his room
at the Peach Bowl.......Durant talks transfer to SC.

11. Spring semster 2002, Durant talking transfer once again - trying to
decide whether to just go now or wait till after spring practice to see if
he is clear starter. Decides upon the later....for the time being.

Hope this helps to understand a little bit about Durant's Psyche.
