Knock the house down and build a new one.

lay some plastic under your crawlspace.

That's part of the wierd thing. It's only in the upstairs hallway. Not in the bathrooms - which in this old house have no exhaust fans.

I'll do the clorox and water thing.

Interesting, what exactly does this accomplish? Something to do with moisture I assume?

You need to go find the source. The mold you see is probably just a portion of what's there, possibly in the attic. You don't want to be around if an infestation goes untreated.

I disagree. MOLD is weird, I remember it popped up in one bedroom in the house I grew up in. Every winter, mom washed it down with bleach it was gone for a year.
I think with all this "Killer mold" talk that takes over peoples houses, has people parnoid. Do the bleach thing, you may have to do it every six months. Don't panic!

No one's saying to panic, just to check it out. Two years ago, a triathlete I know started coming down sick, and eventually had to give up competitions. They eventually found that the L.A. Weightloss clinic where she worked had sheets of mold growing behind the drywall. The whole place had to be shut down and decontaminated.

If you can identify the cause of the mold you see, you should be OK. But if it just seems to be coming from nowhere, start investigating.

If it is white mold than it could just be normal. If it is an old house it might not be mold at all. If you have plaster walls it could be the calcium leaching out of the plaster due to moisture. It appears as a chalky, rough coating. This was happening in my mom's old house. Just a thought.

Use an antimicrobal agent.

Do not put plastic under the crawlspace. Sand is much better.

You may want to have your ducts cleaned. If the mold gets airborne it will spread all over the house. Look around all your vents to see if there is any mold growth.

If it's real bad, you may want to put a coat of kilz over the area after you clean it. If that doesn't stop it, cut the damn drywall out. But make sure you seal the affected areas from the rest of the house before you do anything.

Enlighten me on the sand in the crawl space thing. We have moisture probs under the house. Put fans in the crawlspace vents to try and keep it dry. Does sand held?

Down here, most of the new subdevelopments near the coastline use sand. If you have a moisture barrier and it floods your crawl space, then you'll have standing water under your home sitting on that plastic along with the 100% humidity all summer. I've seen hardwoods buckle from this alone. You're almost guaranteed surface mold on framing, not that it really matters. But if you get high levels of moisture it will eventually become a problem.

Sand just absorbs any water in the area keeping the moisture levels normal. It's usually pretty cool under there as well. And it still acts as a moisture barrier for the ground. If you have a flooding problem or leaking pipes, sand will save you lots of misery. You'll never have that musty smell with sand.

It's sand, ask for it by name.

Makes sense. We have a sheet of plastic on the ground and it does hold water. How deep should the sand be? 2-3 inches or more?

Are you talking mold or mildrew? There can be a difference. If its mildew the bleach/water (1 to 3 ratio) cleaning is good. Then paint a layer of Kilz on it.....then you can repaint the area with paint that has a mildew resistance added to it (Sherwin Williams).

By the book......
Mold = a growth of minute fungi forming on vegetable or animal matter, commonly as a downy or furry coating, and associated with decay or dampness.

Mildew = A superficial coating or discoloration of organic materials, such as cloth, paper, or leather, caused by fungi, especially under damp conditions.

Is it fuzzy? Upstairs hallway sounds more like mildew (which is better) just because, and I am guessing here, it has limited ventilation in that area and because there isn't an extreme dampness like you would get in a bathroom, basement or crawlspace.

It's fuzzy. Like I said, I thought it was dust bunnies stuck to the ceiling.

Imma bleach that shit tonight. Not my anus, the ceiling.
