Just bought all new interior doors and it seems every single one needs to be trimmed on at least one dimension.

Question:

tables saw or just a circular saw with a stop jig thingie?

Take a sledgehammer and make the door openings wider.

It's like a quarter inch the length of the door.

I hired a hawaiian to remove the junk and grade the yard and bring in new driveway gravel. He did a shitty job and I finished using a fuckering shovel

a circular saw will do the trick. hinge side, 3/16" cut then finish with course paper on a block. I just did this at my folks' house. it was a solid door

Circular saw WILL do it but cuts like that are what table saws are made for. If you got one handy you may as well use it since it's much easier to get a good straight cut with one. What do I know though? I just like big power tools.

I can get hold of a circular saw much easier. Plus it may be eaiser to handle the circular saw and use a guide than to handle the entire door especially since I probably won't find a really nice table saw with a big table to rest the door on.

Then why ask if you should use one? You answered your own question and wasted everyone's time. I think you owe everyone an apology.

Do you cut up to the tape or through the middle?

Luan? If they aren't solid wood, you need to put masking tape on the line you're cutting and cut down the center of it. The tape will create surface tension and keep splintering to a minimum.

Are they that paper wood looking stuff? If so, a regular table saw blade will rip that shit apart. You need one of those thin plywood blades. 160 teeth I think? the teeth are only about 1/8" deep into the surface.

Found a picture. It really works well with those new compressed paper doors.

builder
11-29-06, 04:53 PM
oh...and you won't need the tape if you use this kind of blade. It's made for cutting layered materials without chipping. I use one to cut plastic sheeting without chipping.

yeah. I've got a 5-3/8" one. They come in several sizes all the way up to 10". Plan to spend about $20 on one that size at Depot.

I've never used the tape method. I take a razor knife and score the line several times and then cut up to it. As long as you don't cross the score it will never splinter. You don't need any special blades and a skill saw is all you need.

Just fucking do it. Even if you fuck up Luan is a cheap ass door to replace.
