should be sitting in jail right now.

knock it off.

The Ranger ran him from behind, Simon shoulda pummeled him with his hands, and not his stick, and the chop was the wrong way to handle it.

Calling for a guy to go to jail is dumb, considering the Ranger provoked the reaction with the illegal hit from behind which wasn't called.

Simon should be suspended for the remainder of the season, but jail?

Be real.

It happened in NY. 'Nuff said.

I respectfully disagree. Cheap shot or not, and the announcer calling the game said it was a clean hit, you don't get up and swing your stick as a weapon. He deliberately tried to hurt the other guy. An attack like that goes past what's acceptible by any standard. I know that fighting in hockey is "part of the game" and wouldn't have an issue if he would have gotten up and beaten Hollweg up with his fist. But using your stick as a weapon crosses the line that takes it past a simple sports fight and into something that needs to be addressed by more than just the league.

Mike, just ignore them. Talk to me and Playa about REAL hockey. These new fans don't know anything about REAL hockey. You have to be old school to understand it.

punishment fit the crime--Simon done for the season + playoffs. Don't know that he'll get another shot at a roster next year. ugly incident, and the NHL finally got one right--but if the Isles have a short playoff (if any), they may need to carry it over into next season too.

BTW--I say "if any" because I haven't checked the standings...
PS--Sam Rosen is a Rangers announcer, so his spin will favor the injured player.

I respectfully thank you for your reply.

By that logic:
baseball pitchers who throw at batters are in the same category, yes?
basketball players committing hard fouls with a guy in the air are in the same category, yes?
basketball players fighting is the same, yes?

Not trying to incite an argument, just pointing out spots where things happen in the field of play that are well outside the rules, but not punished by the "law."

Sports is entertainment, and not the real world, no matter how badly wish to put it in there. When these athletes are busted with drugs, DUI's, etc, they cross into the real world and should be handled accordingly (which many of course, are).

Another example--Ron Artest. If he fights Detroit PLAYERS...no issue with the law. Fight the FANS....bring on the 5-0.

a baseball player hitting another with a bat should and would be in legal trouble

Bertuzzi was charged as was McSorley. Why should this be different?

but that wasn't the example, was it?

Bertuzzi's attack was far worse than Simon, as was McSorley's whack on Brashear. Simon's deal was ugly, and he's done for the year (at least). Dino Ciccarelli was charged also years ago for a stick swinging thing against Luke Richardson (I think). Ugly incidents all of 'em, but leave the law outta sports. Just don't make sense.

It was a different example but I think a closer analogy. Precedent dictates it's not that far fetched for the law to be involved.

I only k now of 1 time when a baseball player went after somone with a bat (Juan Marichal I think)....pitchers throwing at batters happens more often than hockey fights (nowadays anyway).

there they go...bring up Randall Simon ... it was Simon, right?

Unintentional assault on a bratwurst, is how the police called it if memory serves.
