Pictures like this make me wonder why I even bother - I'll never remotely be able to do anything half this good - all of them are incredible.
Oh yeah, when do I get to meet the girl in 40?

You have some awesome pictures of kids in that collection. The others are great too but you capture something in the kids that not a lot of people can get. I can almost here the squeals of laughter coming from the pictures.:cheers2:

Mark, have you thought about reading a couple of books on compostion? In college, we spent a whole year on how to arrange items so that they either balance or cause tension. Most of Larry's photos have either perfect balance or really good tension within the subjects. I can't explain what that means even after a whole year of the stuff, but I know how to do it and I know it when I see it.
That's the problem I have with photography...You have to have a designer's sensibility with so much technical knowledge. I like to point and shoot. Sometimes I get great pics, most times I get crap.

I have an "idiot's guide" that talks about it - and I've read through it, but it's really brief. Mostly it just talks about "rule of thirds" and selecting a center of attention. I'm looking for something more in depth, but havent seriously looked yet. I guess I was initally trying to learn as I went, but I think what I'm finding is that I'm not really learning anything that way. It's going to take more than reading message boards and shooting the same things over and over to improve.
What I'd really like to do is find a class, but I havent been able to find anything locally.

Any graphic arts program will teach you the same thing. Probably better than a photography class. See if you can find a book on graphic arts, or understanding architecture.

Mark, pic out a couple pictures that you think are really good. I'll try to help you decide why they are good and what rules of composition they're using.

i absolutely love larry's pictures. i think he shoots the exact type of photos i would want to shoot if i was a professional photographer. i love how he pays attention to fg and bg elements and frames his shots to capture both, but uses lighting or focus to keep the attention where it should be. plus, i'm a big fan of the photo-journalistic style in general -- poses don't do much for me, gimme action and people caught just doing what they do.
