I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread for music images. Music seems to lend itself pretty well to photography and I'm anxious to see other peoples' images and get your ideas and advice.
These are of Hugh Masekela at The Shakori Hills Grass Roots Festival last spring. I knew of Hugh Masekela from NPR. I'd heard an interview with him and I knew enough about jazz to know that he's like the godfather of African jazz, but I hadn't really listened to him much.
Man he was great - great musician, great showman (He even plays a mean cowbell)! I was lucky enough to stake out this corner of the stage where I just bobbed my head in time to the music to the music (I hope) and clicked away. It was about as much fun as I've ever had with my clothes on (they insisted on that).
These were shot with a D70 using a 24-120 VR lens.

Nice work. I've only had the chance to shoot once concert and it was really before I knew what i was doing (yeah, I used to be REALLY bad, not just SORTA bad like I am now). It was a Charity Case daytime, outdoor show so what few pictures I have that are slightly decent are WAY over exposed. I'll see if I can find anything worth posting.

Two points. First, You've posted some shots that I'd have killed to have taken. There wasn't anything "sorta bad" about them. Second, I have reems of bad concert photos.
I was just lucky to get that spot. My elbows were actually on the stage when I was shooting. That festival closed with Donna The Buffalo and their set-up was such that the back of a piano was blocking the stage so I had to move.
It was still a pretty good night. Donna the Buffalo was pretty good but it's hard to follow a legend. I squeezed off maybe twenty shots and went home.
