I'm curious as to how much players have to pay to play. I know of one team that is charging the kids $40 and another team that is charging $275-300 per player.

Given how much you have to pay, what are your expectations?

Concord Post 51 has no charges, but each player had to purchase a pair of grey pants.

Expectations: To be given a chance to compete for a spot on the team/starting lineup/position.

Rowan jumped on us tonight for 10 runs before we got on the board in the 5th with almost a mercy rule game.
Pitching and outfield play hurt Concord tonight and of course we didn't hit with Rowan. Rowan played well and crushed the baseball at the plate. Series even with a rubber match coming up on June 19 at Newman Park.

Really enjoyed watching the guys play at Newman Park tonight. I witnessed a young group of baseball players
experience the joy of playing in this fine stadium for the first time. An experience they will never forget!

Concord went up in this game 1-0 until the top half of the fourth. The moors bats came alive and put 4 runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Concord scratched again with 2 runs in the 5th (I think) that made the score 4-3 Moors. They padded the lead to 6-3 and in the top half of the 7th Concord scored 3 to tie it up. In the bottom half of the 7th a key base hit with runners on 1st and second scored the winning run.

The legion brass has pulled it off again instead of having the playoff format it has had forever the brass all of sudden decided to have a qualifying tournament in cherryville, Now this is the way it is suppose to be 2 teams advance from area 3, 1 plus cherryville in area 4. now they want to play a 3 of 5 series in first round and bring 4 teams from each area plus cherryville (win or loose) for a qualifying tournament for the state. now this seems to me that cherryville is going to eat steaks while everyone else pays for it .

look at the revenue these teams will loose Mocksville and Rowan stand to loose atleast 500.00 a game These teams are the largest draw in jr legion South rowan and Mooresville stand to loose a pile also. How can these team afford to travel to a tournament in Cherryville with no revenue comming in. It looks like everything if for cherryville and cherryville alone.

I understand that the meeting did not go well, Most everyone in Area III wants to know why they have to go to Cherryville, You lose gates, concessions & 50/50, then have the expenses of traveling to Cherryville. I have heard some Area III teams might not go if they win the 1st. round. It is a 3+ hour drive for some to get there. Why does Cherryville get to reap all the financial benefits. Then they are putting their team in the playoffs even if they don't qualify. It is their way or the highway.

1st Round. #1 North vs. #4 South and so on in a series beginning at the higher seed.

1st round winners from Area III & IV (plus Cherryville, As you can see they did not make the playoffs) go to Cherryville to play in a qualifying tournament. The top 2 teams plus Cherryville(host team) will advance to the State playoffs, it could be that either Area III or IV would not be represented. Each area should be represented. Also cost factor: Play off rounds usually have larger gates than regular season, in going to Cherryville we lose gate, concessions, 50/50 etc. Then we have to inccur the travel expenses to Cherryville, for us it is a 2+ hour drive, transportation alone will be approximately $300 per day, no play off income but playoff expenses. Also it will start on Sunday and continue Mon, Tue, Wed. These are work days for most people, most will have to take time off from work to attend games, including coaches.

Thanks, I understand what all the feelings are about now. IMO, that is tuff on programs that need to make enough money to keep the program healthy.
I guess it hasn't changed much since I played back in the 70's. It's a shame because I firmly believe that the Legion program, both Jr and Sr, is worth a young man's summer. But tricks like this sure make showcase look more inviting for next summer! :daisy:

It's not about missing a beach trip. It's called commitment and I believe that goes both ways.
The kids commit to play for their team for the summer and the legion commits to sponsor and treat each team fairly. When one or the other changes in mid-season, then that's a failure on their commitment to the other side. No different than a kid that quits after a few games, only in this case it may have a bearing on whether a team will be financially able to support a team next year. Even if it's just being able to purchase uniforms or new batting helmets, etc.
Our first year team struggled with finances and was hoping to make the playoffs to bring more revenue to the team. We would not be able financially, without help, to play in this type of format.
Just a thought to consider!

No, I was agreeing with you! I am saying by changing the playoff format, that the head dude for the legion did not live up to his end and this in fact will cause all the teams involved, except one to suffer financially.

The North Carolina Junior Legion is divided into TWO areas, East and West. Several years ago the East decided to send the four or five best teams to the State Playoffs. This is why the idea of a quaulifier was brought in. This year we just finished a wonderful weekend at the USA Baseball Complex that brought eight very good teams from Senior Legion Area l and ll. The result was, in my opinion, excellent baseball and 4 very good teams going to Cherryville representing the East. Not necessarilly 2 from Area I and 2 from Area II. We do not crown a Eastern Champion we just celbrate the 4 best.
Hopefully, one can be the best in the State.

I hope the West, III and IV, can settle their differences and do what is best for the player and parent and not what is good for the gate. See you in Cherryville.

Isn't the date on the qualifyer July 19-22 , the state tournament July 26- 30 All area 3 teams should not buy any concessions or 50/50 tickets at this tournament . The hell with the commisioners and Cherryville.

does anyone know if any of the others areas wanted the tournament in there parks? Lots of times teams turn them down for one reason or another. I am a fan of the Post 100 teams and dont think they would try to short anyone. But just my opinion.

I hope this is not forgotten. What was done is wrong no matter how you try to cover it up. This is really a black eye for the jr. legion program. I hope something will be done about this sad leadership. The good o boys system is alive and well in cherryville.

For those actually interested in the Game, play opens on July 26 in Cherryville. Since C-ville is in Sr. Legion Playoffs there was posibility of a field conflict. Instead Starting time for Jr. opener is 9am with Kernersville playing Cary; 11am Hibriten playing Wilson; 1pm Mocksville playing Southern Wayne; and 3pm Cherryville playing S.W. Brunswick. Fridays game times are Loosers 11am and 2pm; winners 5pm and 7:30 pm.

Should be some good baseball.

It was a great day for baseball. Four one run games;

Cary goes down 3-2to Kernersville. Cary scores on a sac fly and a wild pitch. Kernersville scores winning run on a balk.

Wilson takes game from Hibritin with a homerun in the top of the eigth 5-4

South Wayne lead off batter scores in the first inning. 11 innings late Mocksville pushes accross a 2-1 victory. Both starting pitchers go 12.

In the final, Cherryville is up 7-6 top of the 7th 2 out, ball hit to second base that is not handled. Two batters later a blast to left puts SW Brunswick up 9-7. Cherryville scores one in the bottom but the tying run is doubled off of second. 9-8 SW Brunswick.

Tomorrow 9am Cary and Hibritten, next cherryville and South Wayne; Kernersville vs Wilson; and S.W Brunswick vs Mocksville.

After these four games Cherryville Senior Legion team hosts Ashville.

Another busy day

S.Wayne holds on to oust Cherryville 5 - 3;
Kernersville scores the winning run with two out in the bottom of the 7th on a throwing error moving Wilson to the loosers bracket:
I a wild and woolly 37 hit affair Mocksville scores 9 times in the first and holds on to beat S.W. Brunswick 17 - 13.

Saturday opens with Cary vs Wilson and S.W. Brunswick and S. Wayne in the loosers bracket and a match-up of Kernersville and Mocksville.

Went over early to watch some jr legion action then the big one cherryville and asheville could not beleive how thugish the Brunswick county team played the players cursed the fans, hit a homerun and danced around the bases like a ballerina, then to top things off they intentionally spiked the 1st baseman from Mocksville probably knocking him out of the rest of the tournament both benches then cleared , fans were all but fighting hope these 2 teams don't meet up again this could get ugly.also heard they did the same thing against cherryville the night before.

Oh you gotta be kidding me! If this is the same first baseman for Mocksville that I think it is (not going to name any names here), this makes the second time this year this kid has been intentionally spiked! A well known East Rowan/Rowan Legion starter spiked him in the very last play of the game, when Davie County knocked East Rowan out of the state playoffs. It took this young man several weeks to recover from that because it was around the knee area. But I heard that situation was handled in a professional matter, so hats off to coach Hightower of East. Now if this is the same player, and it is around the same knee location, that can't be a good thing. If it was indeed intentional, the player who did the "spiking" should be suspended for the rest of the tournament! This player obviously wasn't thinking about the "sportsmanship" part of the game!
