Well it falls in the tell me something new category, but Rowan has to be considered one of the favorites - the Steedley (injury) loss hurts but Rowan is still loaded. And will throw in South Rowan and Kernersville as dark horses.
As always, I'd look to Rowan/Caldwell/Cherrville out of the West to make noise... And Garner/Morehead/Wilmington/Wayne Co. to make noise from the east.
Garner has been down this year -- but I include them simply by the fact that they know how to win in the post-season. Plus, the State Tourney is on their home field and Coach Barbour will do his best to not let the home crowd down. They managed to finish 2nd in their conference despite a 6-14 record by finishing 3-3 in the Area 1 West National Conference.
My early vote goes to Rowan County. I've just heard too many good things about them throughout the summer to not believe they will be crowned State Champs, and their tradition is nothing to sneeze at either.
www.nclegion2007.com
I'll go with Morehead again...I live in Rowan County....hope I don't get booted out for this ...I just don't go with my heart making decisions.
Morehead, Rowan, Caldwell, Cherryville and obviously nobody is giving Randolph County any credit,,, but you soon will. Any of these teams are capable of winning the title, as with a double elimination tournament format sometimes teams benefit from getting better draws, and one of the stronger teams can slip up and get in losers bracket day 1 with one loss. Don't get me wrong, I like the state tournament format in that it brings a lot of folks together (we've been to 3 of the last 4), but I still think you get the best team as your state champ if you continue series play til the end.
Just remember what I said about Randolph County guys.

Randolph certainly is playing well right now. They are hot and can hit a ton. I would have said Rowan about two weeks ago, but they have not been swinging the bats very well as of late. Rowan did get Weston Church back in the deepest most talented pitching staff in the state. Watch out for Wayne as well.
Just wondering... But who would you guys like to see throw out the first pitch? We have someone in place but just for fun, who would ya'll like to see? (Realistic Possibilities)

From the West I like Durham and from the East I have been swayed in the last few weeks to New Bern. But a Wayne vs Wilson East final would not surprise me.
Durham's a good pick out of A1 West. Haven't seen Clayton play.
I wouldn't count out Garner either.
So far, 2 of the 8 teams have qualified for the tournament. Remember, Area I gets 3 teams this summer due to the fact that nobody in Area II hosted the tourney. The Area 1 East Champion (Wayne County or New Bern) will join Durham and Garner as the Area I representatives.

2007 State Championship Tournament:
Garner Post 232 (Area I)
Durham Post 7 (Area I)
Rowan County (Area III)
Caldwell County (Area IV)
This is shaping up to be one heck of a State Tournament!!
www.nclegion2007.com
Any predictions on who will win it all?
You gotta think the "Big 3" coming from out west will be favorites... Rowan, Caldwell and most likely Cherryville.
Then again, Morehead City could be a favorite if they get by Scotland County.
And don't ever count out the home team (Garner).
It'll be fun, no doubt about that.
2007 State Championship Tournament:
Garner Post 232 (Area I)
Durham Post 7 (Area I)
Rowan County (Area III)
Randolph County (Area III)
Caldwell County (Area IV)

Add Cherryville to the list.
Man, Wayne and Morehead City are close to clinching as well...
Looks like a bigtime Tourney.
How are the brackets set up? I know you have to see who finish where to seed the actual teams, but what about a blueprint, such as: Area IV #1 vs. Area III #2, Area II vs. Host, etc. Has that already been determined? If so, that would be nice to see.
Gotta run right now, I'll be back later..
Quick note:
The loser of the Area 1 West Championship (Durham leads series 1-0 over Garner) will be seeded as the Area 2 #2 team since they only get 1 team in Area 2 (Champ).
The State Tourney brackets won't be made until the teams are finalized like you said. I had my hands on a copy of what the bracket looks like last night but I can't find it. I don't think there is any blueprint of who would play who yet either.
The games on the first two days (Wednesday and Thursday) will be at:
Session 1
10:00am
1:00pm
Session 2
4:00pm
7:00pm (Garner will play in this game no matter what on Day 1-Wednesday)
There will be $40 Tournament Passes available, or you can buy $8 tickets for each session you want to attend. The $40 Tourney Passes are a deal, especially if you believe your team will stick around a few days. Plus, with the Pass... You can come and go to the tournament from your hotel anytime you would like without purchasing a session ticket.
And guys... Just to let you know, I believe we will put your name on the pass if you choose to buy one and check ID's at the gate if we have any questions. So bring your ID to each game.

seems you would have the bracket pre-determined unless you seed the teams. so how's it set up?

It's that region's turn, and Area II lost a team when nobody would take the event.
Part of Garner's deal in taking the tournament consisted on Area I West sending two teams.
Also remember, the Area I West RunnerUp will be the Area II #2 team as far as seedings go.

Wow...it is shaping up to be one of the best AL state tourneys in awhile...teamwise
Yep...it should be a great one. I wonder if Garner can handle having both Cherryville and Caldwell in the same town at the same time. JM needs to hire some UFC fighters as security :laugh4:
Seriously, you are right Boxman; this will be a great one.
Spent a couple hours out at the ballpark this afternoon just thinking about how many folks should show up. The talent level of this tournament is amazing. I feel like these could be the Top 8 Teams in the State... usually there are a couple "sleepers" but I don't see any sleepers this year. The host team's record is ugly, but we all know that Garner will put up a fight in the post-season. These 8 teams can play and they all have a good history.
It's gonna be fun...
Just please do two things for me:
Spend Money at the Concession Stand
&
Don't start any trouble

I know there will be some good crowds in Garner, I know Rowan will bring a lot of people and I know C-ville and Caldwell bring people as well. It should be really fun. I hope to meet some of the TBR posters in Garner.
We need to find a way that allows all TBR members to be recognized. Perhaps JM can make an announcement before a game to notify a designated time and place for everybody to gather.

Is this how's it's been run in the past?
I feel the Area II team of Scotland County has been short changed. Especially, if New Bern wins the tournament and Garner doesn't win a game at all. Nothing against Garner, but Scotland was under the impression that if they won their division they would be going to the state tournament. They didn't find out until a couple of days after they won the west division.
If a team is going to host a tournament and they didn't win their division, then there should be nine teams in the tournament. The eight deserving teams and the host team. This should have been explained before season started. If it was explained then I guess Scotland didn't get the message for whatever reason. A lot of very deserving players are sitting home that should have still been in contention for a title! JMO

this is the way it's been in the past... last year, High Point-Thomasville hosted the event and didn't even qualify for the playoffs in their own division but they were given a berth while Area III runner-up, Randolph, didn't qualify
I agree with you superwright, but we (Eastern NC) need to start putting the money into legion ball before we can complain. If it wasn't for Garner ('01, '07), the State Tournament would have been in the West ever since it started in 2000 except for Fayetteville ('03?) hosting one year.
It's a shame Post 50 has to stay at home, thats just how things go sometimes. I feel for those guys.
And about Garner... They finished 2nd in their half of the Area 1 West during the regular season and won the first two rounds of the playoffs before losing to a good Durham team in the Area 1 West Championship. Much different that Thomasville's story last season.

Same thing happened last year in area III with High Point, I don't believe they even qualified for Area III tourney, but was the 2nd seed for that Area. I agree the host team should make the 9th team.
I agree if there is going to be a host team berth that is not earned, then it should be additional, such as in the 9th team as has been mentioned.
I feel that they should get away from host teams all together and let parks/sites or cities bid on hosting the event each year with the understanding that there will be no host team and that every team participating will have earned their way in. I know this would take the hosting of the state tourney away from an individual post, but I think it would help grow the event.
I also think they should go with the bids that can offer a neutral stadium, such as a minor league or college park.
Just an opinion.
It would never leave the west. Heck, it would never leave Cherryville/Caldwell/Shelby/Rowan for that matter if we opened it up to bidding. There has to be some form of rotation.
There's no right way to do it if you ask me. No matter what, 100% of the folks will never agree.
By the way, Area 1 West had 17 teams recently... they were down to 8 TEAMS this summer. Sad, sad, sad. And I believe there is atleast one dropping next year (North Raleigh). That is what I mean when I say legion ball in the triangle area is declining bigtime although it may be growing on a large scale.
I was thinking more on the lines of Horizon in Greensboro, LP Frans in Hickory, NC State, just to throw out a few.
ECPirates11
08-01-07, 07:30 PM
East Carolina in Greenville would be good as well as Grainger Stadium in Kinston. And obviously the new UNC stadium after its completed.
The USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary would be very nice as well.
Only problem is teams would still have to have the money to bid on these places and put on the tourney. Money in Eastern NC Legion ball is almost non-existent.

Some good posts concerning the moving Tourney. See if I can supply some insight. The amount of work that goes into this tourney is massive and costly. What the host must supply includes: 7 rooms per team for any team over 50 miles (5 teams), plus rooms for umpires, Commisioners; $18 per day meal money for the players; opening banquet for all players; shirts for all players; umpire costs are $3,200; the list still goes on. Takes a lot of sponsorship money. ASK JM15 about the amount of work. Also takes 5 playing days (8 Teams) which runs into problems when dealing with a minor league facility or rain days. Most colleges don't want to be bothered too much because of the amount of work involved and liability situations involved.
If we take it to a 9 team Tourney at least another day is added. We tried that with a Jr Legion Tourney in Salisbury a few years back and seemed like we were there forever.
Right now the 2008 State Tourney will be held in Gastonia, Area IV. 2009 will be in Area I, any takers? Let me know we can start working on a presentation.
Maybe LegionVet can give us some information, but I according to some folks in Garner... Day 1 Schedule is: 9:30, 12:30, 3:30, and 6:30.

http://www.localreplay.com/events.php
Do we need to apply for formal media credentials, and/or do you have any other processes we should be aware of?
Thanks.
All good posts and ideas, but just to add to what others have said, anyone considering hosting such a tournament must also consider that your ballpark have adequate parking, and HOPEFULLY be near enough motels for all mentioned above.
Costs you need to shoot for is in the neighborhood of $20,000+ before the first pitch is thrown.
These tournaments are a lot of fun and the locals will indeed make some money from it also,,,,,,,,, but I can assure you folks that JM15 and the Garner folks should all be patted on the back because of all the time and money they've already had to raise in preparation for this event.

Just got back from the game. Rowan dominated every aspect of the game. Coach Jim Gantt made some changes to the Rowan line-up after they sleep-walked their way thru the Randolph series. Joe Kesler, the normal starting left fielder and #9 hitter was benched. Trey Holmes moved from firstbase to left field. Weston Church moved from third to first and Justin Mock started at thirdbase. Matt Hall was inserted as the DH. The moves paid immediate dividends as Hall and Mock both homered and Church and Mock made diving stops of balls when Morehead had runners in scoring position. Justin Roland at shortstop for Rowan is incredible with the glove and on the bases. Cy Young was back to being Cy Young as he baffled the Morehead batters the entire game. I only saw Morehead hit 1 ball hard the entire game.
Rowan is in good position now as they have USC signee Keegan Linza on the hill tomorrow against Cherryville/Durham.
The temperature was incredibly hot out there. I feel sorry for the guys at the 12:30 game.

Caldwell County is having an easy time with Wayne County in the top of the 8th by a score of 11-0. Wayne will get one more chance to bat since they are the home team. Jimmy Messer from Caldwell pitched a great game and Caldwell had the luxury of taking him out heading into the 7th. Andrew Berry came on in relief of Messer.
I believe the pitcher for Wayne County was Garrett Davis who is heading to the Tar Heels and he was knocked out in the 7th. Two more pitchers were brought in for Wayne in the 7th after Caldwell erupted for 7 runs. Brad Chavis with a monster 2 run shot in the 7th.

Amongst all the other changes travisunc pointed out, starting Young over Linza interesting because it could be a two-game decision. Any speculation/insight based on history about whether this means Linza could be one and done for States - e.g. if Rowan makes it to Sunday, would Linza be available to pitch on two days rest, assuming he starts tomorrow and pitches deep into the game?

Linza probably is one and done unless it is a relief appearance on Sunday if he throws a lot of pitches tomorrow. He threw a little on the side today. Young, however, could throw again Saturday and espcially Sunday if Rowan is still alive. It didn't seem he threw a lot of pitches today. Rowan turned 3-4 DP.

Not correct. Davis left after five. His line: 5 4 2 2 3 7 and 98 pitches.
Messer: 6 3 0 0 3 7 and 103 pitches
Grant Sasser replaced him and retired the side in order in the sixth. It was another matter in the seventh as 7 of 8 batters reached. Wayne then decided not to waste anyone else. .

Host Garner defeats Randolph County 6-3 and sets up a showdown with Caldwell County Thursday evening at 7:30. I hope things do not get out of hand with these 2 teams. There has been a lot of bad blood between them. Let's hope the fans behave themselves.

The Garner starter went the distance: 140 pitches.
Crowds were great today. Been out there since 7am and I will be back there in a few hours.
College Coaches I saw:
NCSU (Head Coach, Assistant)
UNC (Head Coach)
Elon (?)
Gardner-Webb (?)
Campbell (?)
ECU (Head Coach, Assistant)
Pheiffer (?)
UNC-Charlotte (?)
I'm sure there were several more.
Garner - Caldwell in the nightcap tomorrow night. Talk about a night session of baseball ----------Rowan vs. Cherryville and Garner vs. Caldwell.
Should be exciting to say the least.

Sorry Devil, you need a recount. 160-165 early in the ninth. I'm going to say he threw at least 180. If you don't believe me just ask the Charlotte coach. He was not happy and I don't blame him. Poor coaching in my opinion on the Garner coach.

He in fact threw 151. I did a quick count after the game. Usually I keep up with it by innings, but my team was not playing. If you and the Charlotte coach would like to chech my pitching chart, feel free to see me before our game.
But the point is that the guy shouldn't have been in there. Contrast that with what the Caldwell and Wayne coaches did.

WOW! Defending champions and alot of peoples odds on favorites, Morehead City are the first team eliminated from the American Legion Tournament. Anyone want to argue that baseball is the most fickle game on the planet... its all about when you get hot and when you don't.....

Wayne willl have to play for the third straight day at 12:30. Yes, we lost the first game and have to pay the price, but why not be inventive and play it early in the day, then start the other ones late in the day?
In other words, no adjustment for the heat.

Area I is not competitive according to the GURUS.
Any TEAM from that lowly area will get no special treatment. Perhaps one of these inferior teams will be lucky enough to get to Sunday!

Winner's Bracket Finals Friday night: Caldwell vs. Cherryville
4:30 game- Garner vs. Durham
12:30 game- Rowan County vs. Wayne County
(Weatherman reported its supposed to "cool down" to only a high around 95 this weekend, instead of these 100s.)
Durham has beat Garner 6 or 7 times this summer. :beatdeadhorse5:
Hopefully Post 232 can get another win for Coach Barbour this afternoon.
Cherryville-Caldwell in the night cap -- WOW
And by the way -- I predict Rowan or Wayne to come out of the losers bracket and win this thing. Something about those two teams..
JM15, am hearing the times for today's games is different than what I posted above,,, can someone confirm gametimes for today's games (Fri). Thanks.

games been moved back today?
SUMO, as far as I know, they're still the times I posted above. Right now, Rowan County is on the shortend of a 17-0 whoopin by Wayne County which is still in the 4th inning. Rowan is on their 4th pitcher but the Wayne hitters are not slowing down.
Barring a historical comeback, Rowan will end up 40-8 this year and should be congratulated on such a fine season. Also major congrats to Wayne County for living to play another day.
Again, not a final, but 17-0 Wayne Co. over Rowan Co. in 4th inning...
was informed from the local radio that the broadcast had been moved to 9 o clock because of the games being moved. Thanks for the info I will try to find out something later.
... want all those Caldwell/Churavill folks out that late on a Friday night in the big city ??? :sifone: Just pickin.
Your probably right, they may bump the 2nd/3rd game today back to get out of some of the heat, but Rowan/Wayne apparently started on schedule around 12:30,,,,,,,,,, well that is Wayne started at 12:30... :blauwoog:
... not a final, but Wayne County-19 over Rowan County-1 (Rowan batting in 7th)
FINAL:
Wayne 19
Rowan 1
(7 innings)
Grant Sasser picked up the W for Wayne.
Weston Churh I believe had the L for Rowan.
The Goldsboro boys came out swinging today.
TONIGHTS GAMES:
6:00pm - GARNER vs. DURHAM
(Loser goes home, Winner faces Winner of Caldwell/Cherryville)
Following - CHERRYVILLE vs. CALDWELL COUNTY
(Winner faces Garner/Durham Winner, Loser faces Wayne County)

Well, just got back from the state touney. My boys didn't show up today, I think that devastating loss to Cherryville really hurt their morale. Those Wayne County boys just hit everything we threw at them. OH well, Rowan had a great season and should have a young but still talented team next year. Good luck to all the remaining teams at the state tournament. There are nothing but quality teams and NC should send a contender to Albany. Right now I'm thinking Caldwell will win it but the the way Wayne pitched and hit today, you gotta watch out for them too.

Great atmosphere tonight.
The difference in atmosphere's between the Durham/Garner game and Cherryville/Caldwell game was amazing. It is no question that legion baseball in Area's 3 and 4 are live and well. Area's 1 and 2 on the other hand...
I was very upset with Garner's performance tonight. Yea, they got beat pretty bad. But the way they lost was embarassing, especially at home. :57:
Looking forward to another great day of baseball on Saturday evening.
Durham-Caldwell and Cherryville-Wayne. Two Great Match-ups... Area I vs. Area IV all the way around.
FINAL:
Wayne 19
Rowan 1
(7 innings)
Grant Sasser picked up the W for Wayne.
Weston Churh I believe had the L for Rowan.
The Goldsboro boys came out swinging today.
Once again they've come up short. My interest in this has now reached absolute zero. On to the Little League World Series playoffs!
Really hope we see Area I vs. Area IV for the Title today. All Area IV Championship on this side of the state wouldn't make a lot of people happy around here.
Should be a fun afternoon. See ya'll out there.
hey fella's... just lettin ya'll know that i won't be around for post-tourney discussion. i leave for family vacation right after the championship game today.
thanks for everything. i met a lot of you guys at the ballpark and met a lot of other great people who love this game as much as i do. i hope yall had a great summer and wish ya'll the best this fall. go wolfpack
