Other than avoiding shooting directly towards/around the sun or other light sources, is there a way to avoid these? Will a polorizing filter help? ND Filter? Anything I can do to fix them in post?

i actually like lens flares, but that's cuz i come from a computer imaging background where things like a shallow focus and optical "mistakes" are more intriguing than absolute perfection.
however, i do believe that a lens hood would help.
lens hood helps with contrast, too.

hood. also, adobe lightroom can fix that. click on the picture in the article. at some point in the presentation, it talks about removing spots
