View Full Version : Charlotte Observer legion article
Wow,,,,, Tuesday's (6/5) Charlotte Observer has a section highlighting 4 of "their" area's legion baseball teams this summer,,,,,,,, in fact great information about the 4 teams that were covered (Cherryville, Denver, Gaston County and Gastonia).
But my question, why nothing on any Charlotte teams? Does this specific writer only cover whats west of Charlotte or something? Or have I already missed the Charlotte teams being covered in a previous article? Just thought this article about non-Meck teams was a bit strange,,,,, otherwise great article.

As you noticed, CO is not a Charlotte newspaper (at least not in their mind). It is a Western NC paper that covers the whole west, which sometimes includes Charlotte.

Braves,
At least they wrote something, the WS Journal would never stoop that low. They won't even print the scores. They are simply not interested. Would rather tell us what's happening in the NHL, like anyone cares.

I can't be 100% sure because I didn't actually see the article in the paper, but that article may have actually been from the "gaston observer" portion of the Charlotte Observer. The Gaston Observer is distributed within the CO in Gaston & Lincoln Counties.

Just for those who don't have the best newspaper coverage,,,,, this is not meant to rub it in,,, but for interested reading only. Further, maybe there's a big-city newspaper guy who may read this and learn how to cover the local kids just like they cover the Panthers.
Here are 2 articles in today's The Salisbury Post newspaper about the same game that was played last night,,, and folks this particular newspaper does this every day with 3-4 legion teams, while still managing to cover the Panthers and national sports too. Thats right, this is 2 SEPARATE articles about the SAME game...

Boxscore included in the paper itself.
Just curious,,,,, did the Charlotte Observer ever print anything in the paper about the "Charlotte" legion teams?
Boy, just going back and reading that last post,,,, it looks like I asked a really dumb question. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the answer is even more pitiful.

Almost as pitiful as the Independent-Tribune. :34:

I live in Raleigh but still go to the Wayne County Post 11 games. The News and Observer is no better than the Charlotte or Triad newspapers. The preps writer will not cover Legion baseball or even send a correspondent to games. You're lucky if you get a box.
But part of it may have to do with the fans, or lack thereof. Wayne has a continuing series with Garner. We often have more fans at their place than they do despite Garner usually having good teams. The newpapers' job is not to create interest but to reflect it. So, I'm wondering how well-attended are the games in the Triad and Charlotte. If enough people come, the Legion community can make a case for better coverage.
Wayne's home games draw a good number of spectators compared to the rest of the league, but the interest in the west is much greater, justifying the better coverage. The newspaper covers all the home games and almost all games in adjoining counties. I supply the info for the longer trips, and those games are well reported. Wilson and Rocky Mount also do good jobs. Greenville has fallen off the map for the most part.
For those who get good coverage, be thankful for what you have.
I agree Rowan County gets possibly the best newspaper coverage of any amateur level team I've ever seen. I certainly wasn't comparing the vanilla Charlotte Observer to the great Salisbury Post in terms of local sports coverage. I realize the big papers are usually more regional, thus more interested in Panthers, Bobcats, etc. I was just amazed to see the Observer mention legion teams AT ALL, but then it drew my curiosity as to why no Charlotte teams were mentioned?
As for great local coverage, for those that don't know, yes the Salisbury Post covers Rowan County legion games and a Rowan game is usually followed the next day with 2 large writeups, complete with pictures, interviews and stats,,, plus there will always be comments about anything in that game pertaining to all-time records, both individual and/or team. This same paper also finds the time to do a great job covering South Rowan, Mocksville and Kannapolis as well.
Oh, and when Rowan County travels to away games,,,,,, 2 radio stations go with them. They got it going on for sure in terms of community support, just go by and take in a Rowan home game anytime at Newman Park, I promise you will remember the experience.
Mike London is absolutely the best writer covering amateur sports.
Observer revs it up about legion ball yet again,,, this time about the team in Denver...

Don't worry Braves,,, we're going to get a writeup about a Charlotte team in the Charlotte newspaper before its over with. They are just circling the area before they swoop down with a great story on Dbacks20,,,, the legend.....:worshippy:
Too bad it was a special spent article...not covered by the CO...well at least they printed it...That is about the only way you get AL coverage unless like everyone has said...Get the Salisbury Post!

As Salisbury resident, will echo the Post comments - tremendous coverage and talented journalists.
Legion is huge here - bigger than anywhere I've been in NC - so the coverage well justified and SP executes very well - any other posts that rival the type of fan base that Rowan and South Rowan have?
At LR we want to give fans the tools to be able to easily cover their teams - let me know if you have any suggestions/recommendations - goal is to solve the exact problem listed in this string w/ large newspapers being blind to great Legion baseball.
