View Full Version : Great Eat'n Joints for Legion Games

Most legion ballparks have great concession food (much better than HS games for whatever reason),,,, anyway since many legion fans also routinely drive 30 minutes or more on a nightly basis going to games during the summer,,,,, some have mentioned great places to get the best BBQ or the best footlong hotdog. So if you will help the HUNGRY, please share what restaurant is famous near your home ballpark so that us out-a-towners will make a point to stop in for a bite before the game.

Lexington is known for its great Lexington BBQ on Bus85,,, South Rowan has the great Gary's BBQ on Hwy29 just off Int.85,,, Kannapolis has homestyle cookin at our famous Townhouse II Restaurant on Hwy29-A (just outside Kann towards Concord),,,, what are some other favorite eaten joints that folks should stop at when coming to your place?

Definitely would like to hear about other places around the state. Thanks...

And keep in mind, folks like NPCFanatic may want to stop at 2-3 different places  ,,, so if you have more than one, thats fine... :biggrina:

Would definitely recomend BBQ on next trip to Mocksville on Hwy601 from Salisbury, just before you get to Mocksville, restaurant located on the left, building painted yellow, can't remember the name of restaurant, but BBQ was GREAT.

I never pass up a chance to stop at Bridge's Barbeque Lodge when I'm in Shelby-Land (check out the woodpile out back).

As I stated in a previous post, Jay Bee's World Famous Foot-Long Hot Dogs (Highway 64 / Mocksville Highway) is a neat place to stop when you go up to Statesville to face Mike Grant's Owlz. Jay Bees has about 20 kinds of hot-dawgs (I like the 1/4 pounder Ballpark Dawg - "ALL-THE-WAY"). Jay-Bees also has angus-beef burgers and other sammiches. Drive-thru or take-out. A place called Glutton's near the Signal Hill Mall has the best Reuben Samich I've ever had (it's called "The Statesville Rube"). They say that the Carolina Bar-B-Que in Statesville is good but I've never tried it. Ditto for the steaks at The Black Angus downtown.

Since Concord is playing their games at Central Cabarrus HS this year, I would recommend folks to go up Hwy49 from Central's ballpark away from Charlotte about a mile, take (first exit under bridge) Hwy601 toward Concord about 100 yards to Troutman's BBQ on left.

... or one of mine and VillageIdiot's favorites,,, from Central Cabarrus HS go back towards Charlotte about 1/2 mile, turn right on Old Charlotte Rd. and the world famous What-a-Burger is another 1/2 mile on your left.

I love this post.

In Charlotte, there are not many long time historic eateries, but two come to mind: Coops Chicken just what you think it is..great fried chicken
The Diamond hole in the wall restaurant serving home cooked meals...outstanding

Western Forsyth Post 522 in Lewisville/Clemmons, has one of the best Wing joints in the Triad. It is only about 1/2 mile from the field. (West Forsyth HS) It is called Ronni's. They don't have all those flavors that the chain places have, just mild, medium & hot. Not only are the wings great, the pizza is good to.
Check it out the next time you are in Clemmons

It's hard following everything being out of state.

SuperJon- tell me again, where do you go to school? Is it grad school?

SuperJon
06-16-07, 11:10 AM
Liberty University.

Still in undergrad.

I'm trying everything I can to graduate on time. I've transferred twice (went to community college a year, Coastal Carolina a semester, and now here) and lost a ton of credits but everything's on pace for me to graduate next May (and then do my internship next summer). I was going to go to grad school but our grad program won't be ready in time and quite frankly, as much as I love my major, I don't think I'll be using it on a full-time basis.

21 credit hours last semester, 6 this summer, 17 in the fall, and 18 in the spring...all while being considered the school's biggest fan and trying to keep up with my high school team and running their website.

Braves

There were some guys from Charlotte that attended Liberty...plus my old college coach also coached at Liberty. I wonder if that is where the USC connection comes from.

It is important to note that the What-A-Burger restaurants in VA are not related to the What-A-Burger Drive Ins in NC. Neither are related to the orange roofed Whataburger restaurants based in Texas...

For anyone that has to drive to Surry this year, I HIGHLY recommend stopping in King on your way up or your way back (it's on the way) and eating at Little Italy. It's the first place I go anytime I go home.

If you are in Wilkesboro you need to try the Brushy Mountain Smokehouse and Creamery. Great BBQ, vegetables, desserts, service and at a fantastic price. They also make their own homemade ice cream in several flavors, and make their own waffle cones. If you need to feed a hungry crowd and not spend a fortune, this is your place.

TJ21.. I think when you leave the school you'll go back like you came...towards 421, but dont get back on 421, just continue over it. When the road ends turn left and take another immediate left and you will see it. You can ask someone at the game to make sure it is the same exit I'm thinking. I am actually from Boone and found this place a few weeks ago and have been twice since. Next time I go I'm going to try the ribs, they look wonderful. Anyway, good luck to you with the game and I hope you enjoy my suggestion. Let me know afterwards what you thought.

The Texas What-a-Burger chain is much larger (throughout the southeast Texas through Florida) but the NC What-a-Burger is the original. (The Texas chain unsucessfully tried to get the NC folks to stop using the name). The What-a-Burger Drive-In in Concord (no longer there....a Super-K took it's place in the mid-1990s) was the scene of some concerts and sock-hops in the 1960s and advertised frequently on the local Charlotte rock n roll station 610 WAYS-AM. (I WAS VEEERRRYYY YOUNG THEN)

Out of the few What-a-Burger's that are left, the one in MOORESVILLE is the best!http://www.roadsidepeek.com/roadusa/southeast/seeats/seburger/whataburgermooresvillenc.jpg

I would put the What-A-Burger in Mount Pleasant (#13)up against any that are left. Agreeing that the one in Mooresville is also very good! I do remember the one in Concord on hwy 29, they had customer appreciation day and sold what-a-burgers for .25 cents all day. It was a mad house!
I've also eaten at a What-A-Burger in Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth area) and although it appears the same, everything tastes a little different. Got that Tex/Mex going on down there.

I guess we know what is truly tugging at everyone's heart when they go to a legion game!! Amazing how this thread is growing!!

If you're coming to Pineville 337's Ardrey Kell field, exit hwy 521S off of the outer loop (485). There is a fairly new hamburger joint on the right called "5 Guys". You won't beleive the burgers!! A regular fry will feed 4 normal people or 1 player.....and don't forget the cajun spices!!

To get to the field, continue on 521S and turn left on Ardrey Kell Rd.

Speaking of health food. If you're heading out towards East Randolph, stay on 64 until you get to Johnson's in Siler City (since 1946!).
They still make cheeseburgers the good old fashioned way......the short-order guy throws a hunk o' meat on the grill and then tops it with about a 1" thick slab of cheese on top.....when the cheese is melted you're ready to go for it!!!!! Yeee--Haaaa.
"GOOD FER YA!!!!!!!"

There seems to be one of these on just about every corner in Charlotte now. There's also one near Concord Mills. They do know how to make a good hamburger, and that's endorsement is coming from somebody that grew up halfway between the Shake Shop and Black's Grill in C'ville.

We have had Five Guys in Raleigh for a while now. Their burgers and fries are very good, but kind of pricey for "hand eatin" food. Johnson's in Siler City is awesome. He is only open for lunch however. Usually opens around 11am and cooks until he runs out of meat around 2pm. This place is the best and is always packed.

This is in North Kannapolis! I would recommend Lee's and Glenns. Both fantastic! Never know who you will run into at Lee's. My son and I ran into Lacy Brumley at Lee's last fall and he got to meet Lacy. I'd been telling stories about him to my son and Lacy and I sat for almost two hours talking "old times" ! Also if you get a chance to go to George's Double Diamond sports shop in the basement of Lee's, do it! He has an old autographed picture that is worth the trip. George played at least double A and can talk some baseball if you get him in the mood. I get up there every chance I can to see him.
