when's that first round between Cary or Durham vs. Benson? specifically the game at Benson?

I am not sure of an exact date but I believe the Area 1 West playoffs will start next Monday. Cary/Durham (likely Cary) will be the #1 seed and face Benson, therefore Cary/Durham will host games 1 and 3 (if necessary) making Game 2 @ Benson. I'll go out on a limb and say next Tuesday there should be a game @ Benson.

Both games this year between Durham and Benson have been 7 inning- 10 run affairs. Most recently (7/8) was a 19-3 game where Durham hit 5 HRs. I guess Durham's biggest concern is not having a letdown in a 2 of 3 series. From what I understand, Benson is down to 11 players b/c several of them quit as the season has progressed.
Durham should roll through this series, BUT- that's why they play the games.

Wayne had 18 runners to NC's 12. NC cleanup hitter Xavier Macklin stuck out four times.

Another close game. Apex got 5 in the 1st on 4 hits, Logan Oaks hit a 3 run homer.... but Cary came back with 2 in the home half without a hit... Vance Williams walked 4, a couple of wild pitches, a SAC fly, and an error allowed the 2 runs.

Cary made it 5-3 on a solo homer by Michael Gyoerkoe in the 3rd. Williams went 5 innings for Apex, 3 runs (2ER), 3 hits, 5 BB, 7 K's. Apex got one in the 6th on three singles and a SAC fly. Cary came back in the bottom of the 6th... walk, SB, single.... 6-4 Apex after 6....

Cary got another run in the 7th when Apex made an infield error with the bases loaded and 2 outs.... 6-5 Apex after 7...

Cary got 2 in the 8th when the lead off batter Darrus Evans reached on another infield error, Michael Rooney doubled to tie the game, and Rooney scored on Will Simpson's single to take the 7-6 lead.

Simpson got the win in relief, having worked the 8th, and Cory Tilton closed, pitching the 9th and striking out 2 for the save. Michael Caddell took the loss for Apex.

Game 1 was a spectator's dream -- pitching, timely hits, bases loaded jams, an early lead, a comeback, etc. The overview above was great at capturing what went on, but left out the two innings that Cary got out of bases loaded jams with excellent defense.

Garner took care of visiting North Raleigh last night, 8-1.

As some of you know, Garner stunk it up in the regular season finishing 6-14 and very un-Post 232-like. But Coach Barbour does a great job with his kids and has them ready for the playoffs each season.

Yes, they are automatically in the State Tournament... but the guys want to "belong" there and don't want to fall short of earning it on their own.

Clayton moves on 18-0 to host Durham Friday night. The whole schedule is not yet set. I believe game 2 may also be in Clayton.

Wayne County moves to the second roundwith a 13-1 victory but they are not sure who they play since Pitt 39 beat Edenton 8-1.

Not to be outdone for the darling of Greenville, Pitt 160 got past Wilson 6-5. Baseball tomorrow at Edenton and WIlson.

Rocky Mount outhit Wayne 9-7. On the other hand RM starter Tyler Joyner walked five and hit five.

RMA has some strange dimension, as it is tucked away in the corner of the campus. The lines are just over 300. center is 245, Left center is 370 and right center 350. Nolan Lancaster's grand slam was near the shortest part of the park.

Cary advances with a 5-4 win over Apex.... Another great game, close and exciting!

Apex took the early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring 2 runs on a Michael Caddell home run to chase Cary's starter Pat Donovan. Michael D'Elia came on in relief to face cleanup hitter Matt Paske, and he also homered to put Apex on top 3-0.

Cary got 2 back in the 3rd inning on singles by Cory Shackelford and Michael Rooney, a groundout RBI by Lyle Donaldson, and an Apex infield error.

Apex got an unearned run in the 4th inning, and after 4 it was Apex 4, Cary 2.

Cary got to Apex starter Michael Frongello in the top of the 5th inning. Darrus Evans and Rooney hit back to back singles, and Frongello hit Donaldson with a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Will Simpson singled to drive in Evans, bases still loaded. Michael Gyoerkoe hit a SAC fly to center to score Rooney, Donaldson took 3rd. Cory Tilton then hit a SAC fly to right to score Donaldson, and Cary was on top 5-4, which proved to be the final score.

Apex did not quit, as Patrick Johnson singled to lead off the 8th inning. Alan Spears put down a bunt to get Johnson to 2nd, and Caddell drew a walk with one out to put the go-ahead run on base. Tilton came on in relief for Cary and struck out Paske and Mike Mieszanek to end the Apex threat.

Frongello went 6 innings for Apex, allowing all 5 of Cary's runs (4 earned), while striking out 5 and giving up 8 hits. He did not walk a batter. D'Elia, who entered the game in relief in the 1st inning for Cary, pitched 7 innings, allowing only 2 runs, the solo home run to Paske, and an unearned run, while giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 4. Tilton earned the save, striking out 4 in 1 2/3 innings.

Cary's defense was very good in this game, and although they committed 3 errors, they also had 3 inning ending double plays.

I just got back from Wilson where Pitt 160 scored 3 runs on a Logan Hessart bases loaded triple. Logan later scored on a passed ball. This was all in the top of the 13th. Post 160 six Post 13 two. It was a great game. Due to Field availability New Bern will be at South Central tomorrow evening

2) The county does own the ball parks which goes back to my original point of some coaches thinking they are the ones who own these fields- not the taxpayers of said county. Which is why it doesn't make any sense that these coaches are so unwilling to allow Legion to play on the high school fields. Some of these coaches' former and current players are the ones trying to find a field to play on while they're on the Legion team.

BTW, Remember what I have told ya'll about this Garner team. 1. It is my understanding that so called HS summer leagues are not allowed to be sponsored by the High School. The school athletic club may donate to the cause but how much does baseball ever rate. These teams make application to the county (Community Schools) for the use of fields and are treated as any other organization wanting to rent school grounds tis includes lights, scoreboard, and sound system. Teams are not allowed to wear HS uniforms or use any HS equipment.

2. Application for field use igoes through the AD at the school not the coach. As for high school coaches that is a topic for lenghtly discussion.

if you're in the area then definitely. the western series draw more crowds, but its still great baseball around here. in my opinion, only high school baseball can take the place of legion baseball. legion baseball IS summertime.

durham's coach played for the garner coaching staff a few years ago so that makes the storyline interesting.

both teams are already in the state tourney due to garner hosting it, but it should be a great series.

definitely not a bad way to spend a few hours of your friday night.

McDaniel was sharp early, but his pitch count was up before the 5th. That, coupled with the fact that the catcher for 232 was having a tough time handling McDaniel, sent several balls to the backstop, although several of those were not his fault.
I don't know why 232 was having trouble with bunts, but both teams struggled with routine throws- probably due to the fact the field was drenched- any balls hit in the infield were an adventure.
The turning point from my perspective was when the Durham pitcher threw the comebacker over the first baseman's head with 2 outs in the 2nd to score 232's last run. Seemed to make him mad enough to start pitching well.

I forgot about the field conditions. Man it was nasty out there. When I got to the field and saw the delay, I couldn't believe it. I drove through sunny skies all the way to the ballpark and then saw a soaked ballpark.

Anyways, Post 7's pitcher was tough. Is he the kid going to Lenoir-Rhyne?

Not sure who Garner will throw tonight. Jonny Wholestaff more than likely since it's an elimination game.

Durham fails to hold a twelve-run lead, then scores three in the last of the eighth to get past Garner 21-19.

This despite Garner hitting four home runs, including a grand slam and a three run-shot by Darren Tew.
