The NHL wants to stage an outdoor game on Jan. 1, 2008, and the Penguins have informed the league they would be willing to participate -- as the visiting team. NHL officials would not comment, but the league is believed to favor an outdoor game, tentatively titled "Ice Bowl," that would air on NBC on New Year's Day -- likely opposite college football bowl games.

Apparently the NHL asked the Pens if they would host but they declined b/c they are busy with the new arena. Other rumored sites were Detroit and Buffalo. On Jan 1st the Pens are at Buffalo so it could happen at Rich Stadium. I'm sure they would crush college bowl games in the ratings.

Buffalo-Pittsburgh on New Year's Day is a real possibility. Stoopid to choose that date, but I'll be there if they do it. And it's Ralph Wilson Stadium.

It was a college game.

Then again Saturday's game at Spartan Stadium between Michigan and Michigan State could become the game that triggered a return to the days of outdoor hockey.
But probably what Michigan coach Red Berenson will remember about playing in front of 74,554 fans is that players on both teams produced a world-class effort in the game that established a new world's record for hockey attendance.

not at all...here's a chart with the average monthy temps in Edmonton...

Monthly averages °F

January Avg Low: 5° Avg High: 20° Avg Precipitation: 0.42 in
February Avg Low: 9° Avg High: 26° Avg Precipitation: 0.29 in
March Avg Low: 19° Avg High: 36° Avg Precipitation: 0.32 in
April Avg Low: 31° Avg High: 52° Avg Precipitation: 0.74 in
May Avg Low: 42° Avg High: 63° Avg Precipitation: 1.25 in
June Avg Low: 50° Avg High: 69° Avg Precipitation: 1.93 in
July Avg Low: 54° Avg High: 73° Avg Precipitation: 2.3 in
August Avg Low: 52° Avg High: 72° Avg Precipitation: 1.64 in
September Avg Low: 42° Avg High: 62° Avg Precipitation: 0.96 in
October Avg Low: 32° Avg High: 51° Avg Precipitation: 0.46 in
November Avg Low: 18° Avg High: 33° Avg Precipitation: 0.34 in
December Avg Low: 8° Avg High: 24° Avg Precipitation: 0.3 in

They could easily play outside from December through at least the begining of March. I know playing hockey outside seems a little weird, but it can be done far enough north.

I don't know, I don't think the NHL would risk it. What if Chris Pronger fell through the ice? Imagine the lawsuit.

no, but the front row seats there are about (rough guess) 8-10 feet above the field for football.

Any ideas what uni's Buffalo is wearing? The Pens look sweet in the retro blue.

fun game to watch, but likely not so fun for the players. Pens win 2-1 in SO with Sid netting the winner.

Saved up poker winnings will likely go to purchase new Pens sweater (retro blue). Loved it, and BUF should be wearing those old schoolers too.

Can't remember where I read it, but the point was made that a lot of casual fans will tune in and see the uniforms, and then never see them again. Good point that the recognition when flipping through channels and stumbling upon those teams again will be lost.
I just wish that game wasn't 8 hours long. It was cool and all, but after a while I just wanted to see a damn hockey game and got tired of all the interuption.

So, did you go?

From an NHL standard :) :) . . . .

I wonder what the numbers were for Charlotte (since there are quite a few ex Buffalo natives in the area).

==========

Classic earns higher ratings than any regular-season game in decade

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- More people tuned in on New Year's Day to see the NHL play outdoors than any other regular-season game in more than a decade.

The Penguins-Sabres game in snowy Buffalo -- the first regular-season outdoor NHL game in the United States -- drew a 2.6 overnight rating and a 5 share on NBC. Those were the best numbers since a six-game regional telecast on Fox drew a 3.0 overnight rating and a 7 share on Feb. 3, 1996.

Pittsburgh won 2-1 in a shootout on a Sidney Crosby's score before a crowd of more than 71,000 at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The big numbers, in the stands and on TV, came three years after the NHL lockout forced the cancellation of an entire season and after last season's Stanley Cup finals on NBC drew record-low ratings.

"We're delighted by the success of this historic event," NBC Sports president Ken Schanzer said. "The Winter Classic exposed hockey to a larger audience and definitely made new fans of the game."

The Winter Classic ratings also surpassed Wayne Gretzky's final game, which was broadcast on Fox on April 18, 1999, and drew a 2.5/6.

The Buffalo and Pittsburgh markets led the ratings, at 38.2/58 and 17.7/30, respectively. But markets such as Sacramento, Calif., St. Louis and Denver also drew strong ratings, even though the game went up against a number of college football bowl games, including an intriguing Capital One Bowl between Florida and Michigan.

"This was one of the best events I've ever been a part of as a player, coach or broadcaster," NBC game analyst Eddie Olczyk said. "It truly was a memorable experience and a great day for the sport of hockey."

Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets in the United States, and each ratings point represents about 735,000 households. The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into a broadcast among those households with televisions on at the time

Even for events not appearing on NEWS14/TIME WARNER ? ? ? That I could understand if that was the case . . . I would think with the information being publicly known, I would think it wouldn't be that big of a deal to say 'In Charlotte, the Winter Classic got a ________ rating' . . . .
