Every Post has a select few fans who may be rude and show some bad sportsmanship but NEVER, and I mean NEVER have I saw a collection of them as numerous as at Charlotte. The Burke/Charlotte series was an example of how bad the sportsmanship was. This was evident when Charlotte took a lead at Myers Park after trailing 10-3 in game #3. (By the way game #3 wasnt the only bad game but just the WORSE.)
Charlotte had every reason to celebrate after one of their players hit a GRAND SLAM homerun to pull Charlotte to within 2. But it was uncalled for showed a lack of taste when some fan took it upon himself to "prance" through the visitors stands with his hands threw up into the air yelling at the top of his lungs "Hell Yeah" "Hell Yeah". There are young children at the games as well as many other people who just dont like to hear the language.
Charlotte made a great comeback and won huge but to me that was marred by the fans taunting and rudeness to the Burke fans, the players and the umpires. They took some of the glory from their boys. I wont remember Chralotte for having GREAT players, I will remember them for having the rudest fans on the Legion circuit.
Every single team has a few fans that definitely go overboard with their loud obnoxious yelling,,,,,,,, its important to not judge a whole team based on a few idiots in the stands, because trust me we all got em. The high school that my 2 sons played at has a storied successful football tradition, but during the years that my boys were playing HS football, it sickened me to hear some of our fans in the stands yell at our own coaches if we had to so much as punt one time. Some fans are just terrible and should be charged double at the gate, but that don't mean everyone associated with that certain team is a jerk too.

Good points tj
not every team has loud and obnoxious fans...Caldwell Post and Cherryvile come to mind as genteel and laid back

I've noticed that sometimes it runs in cycles, depending on the set of parents. All it takes is a couple of big mouths who won't let up...riding the umps & cheering 'against' the opposition instead of 'for' their team.
And the next thing you know, there's a range war going on.

I want to add a quick addendum:
I have a problem with the new tradition of riding kids by name in other sports. Particularly in basketball where the fans are on top of the players, caustic insults & personalized attacks ae considered part of the game. Duke fans are glamorized by Dookie V for their enthusiasm...all the while ignoring the breech of sportsmanship.
It's just wrong. The game should not be decided by whose fans can best get under the skin of the opposition.
Whether I was playing, coaching or umping,,,,, loud obnoxious fans never bothered me. But when it started bothering me is the last few years (as a fan) you see some little grandmaw who's just out there wanting to enjoy an evening watching her grandson and some loud jerk near her is making her feel uncomfortable with some of the things he's saying and how he's acting. Some may feel that by paying admission it gives you the right to yell certain things, but I dont' think it gives you the right to make other folks feel uncomfortable to the point they don't enjoy the game. And I feel this way whether its opponents fans or ours.

TJ, that's especially true if that loud mouth jerk is taking shots at Grandma's grandson. Fan decorum used to be: cheer for your team. It was considered 'bush' to call players out by name & personally insult them.
Oh for the good old days. (Were they really that good or am I showing my mileage?)

I agree that a kid should not be singled out by name ever, but let me say that it really makes it interesting when you have a really good, close ballgame going on and the fans are really getting fired up and excited with alot riding on the outcome of the game. I've had countless ballplayers come to me after a game and tell me what a lift it was when the fans got fired up, it fired the team up....say what you want to but it makes a difference to the players whether it is for them or against them.. Caldwell sometimes play's off their fans...it makes a huge difference in the right situation. Believe it or not Caldwell is calm compared to the fans of the past. I've not gone anywhere in North Carolina that can match the fan support that Caldwell County has, they come in numbers and they can be loud if the right situation calls for it. Don't get me wrong, other teams have good fan support but Caldwell has a following that has been strong in legion baseball for alot of years. I guess what I'm trying to say is when a person comes out to a ballgame it is their right to cheer, to scream, to sit quitely or how ever you want to enjoy the game ( leave the cussing out of course ) its each persons right to enjoy, after all we have legionares who sponsor this league who have fought and died to give you that right. Just because a person reacts different when a home run is hit does not make him a idiot, I do agree with Mom the guy in Charlotte should not have run through their stands cheering, that could be dangerous in the wrong crowd...I'll shut up now...got to get back to work

Carolina Man,,, as I stated, as a former player, we all like to have the crowd into the game. And your right, Caldwell has one of the most loyal followings around and I personally like that. I find absolutely nothing wrong with a crowd being "in the game".
But I do think its wrong when a fan (or small handful of fans) finds it necessary to yell negative stuff and they get so bad that they make others around them uncomfortable where they don't enjoy the game.

I would like to add a little background information to the Charlotte/Burke County series, as I attended every game.
In Game 1 in Charlotte, the Charlotte 2nd basemen was spiked in both forearms on a tag out on an attempted steal. This caused a trip to the emergency room, resulting in stiches in both arms. I am not here to judge whether this was good hard baseball or dirty baseball, but only that this resulted in this series getting off to an acrimonius start.
Game 2 in Morganton included in order the aforementioned baserunner getting a hit by pitch in the leg, a Burke player being ejected for running
over the catcher on a play at the plate, and a hard tag by a Charlotte player on a play at the plate after a wild pitch. After the play where the Burke player was ejected, a verbal exchange between a few fans of the two teams erupted, resulting in some Burke County fans coming over to the visitors stands. Fortunately, cooler heads on both sides prevailed, and there was no altercation.
Combine these events with the intensity of the actual games (Game 2 was an 11 inning affair, and Game 3 had a change in score from down by 7 to an 11 run win in the course of 2 1/2 innings), and you have an emotional series.
It is true that the series had its share of sportsmanship issues from both sides, but it also had some of the best clutch pitching, hitting, and defensive plays from both Charlotte and Burke County I have seen in Legion Ball. That also will be worth remembering.

I am sure that the UK fans are a laid back group.

Baseballmom you must be a Burke fan! Are you serious? Do you actually think the Burke fans were angels? Two quick observations: your coach is very emotional and YELLS at the umpires whenever he doesn't get his way. Coach Clewis of Charlotte walked out and discussed his objections (and yes, he had some too) but he will never be considered nearly as loud and obnoxious as your "wonderful" role model of a coach that yelled at them. And why did your Burke PA announcer actually say over the intercom "let's play ball" and "it's only a game" while the Charlotte coach was still discussing with the umpires on the Burke field??? Talk about rude! I mean your ANNOUNCER said that over the intercom!! That's too funny! I guess that's just an example of the wonderful Burke hospitality that you show to the visiting team. Gee, that was nice...
And one last thing - not 1 player or coach from Burke showed any interest or concern after the Charlotte player was spiked so hard (in game 1). The Charlotte player that got spiked was literally down on the ground for about 5 minutes and then was helped off the field and immediately had to go to the hospital to get his 10 stitches (5 on each arm). Now, baseball may be baseball, but, good sportsmanship and just general concern for humanity should dictate at least SOME concern be displayed by your coach or the player that was involved. But, alas, no, that did not happen. Instead, Charlotte went to Burke the next day for game 2 and was greeted by your ANNOUNCER by saying "let's play ball" and "it's just a game" over the PA system. Sort of ironic, don't you think?!?!?
So, to make it all even I would say that Burke has the most RUDE fans, coaches, announcers, and players that I've ever seen.
Don't expect all fans to swallow that wonderful Burke hospitality so easily. There's 2 sides to everything.
During the games at Charlotte, I was on the home side of the stands and did not witness anyone from Charlotte going into the visitor stands yelling "hell yeah". If that did happen, then that was unfortunate. Two wrongs don't make a right. My Mom taught me that much.

I was at the Charlotte/Burke games and I agree with rwtj the emotions flared in game one and went on from there, but don't overlook the outstanding games played on both sides. Charlotte's starting pitcher in game one pitched well and was a hard out every at bat, their 3rd baseman played solid all series as did their catcher. Burke's centerfielder (Connelly) played well and pitcher(Mcdaniel) done a great job on the mound pitching a complete game 1 and to come back and pitch eight solid innings in game 4. Plus the many defensive plays made from both teams shouldn't be overlooked. On paper this should have been a one sided series for Charlotte but Burke had the opportunities that they could have just as easily won this series. This was a great series to watch and let's leave it at that.

Yes, game 1 was a pitching gem on both sides. The Charlotte starter was Nate Cudney. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up only 4 hits I believe, 2R (only 1 earned) with 1 or 2 of the hits being bunt singles. The Burke team scored as soon as he was taken off the mound (he was tiring due to high pitch count). The Burke starter Josh McDaniel was fantastic as well and it was a pleasure to watch him pitch. The Charlotte fans have much respect for McDaniel - he brought his "A" game and took a hard fought loss in game 4.

Just a follow-up...
The Charlotte Post 262 fans enjoyed their usual wine & cheese while watching a very good legion game last night.
Charlotte Post 262 - 5
Denver - 2
I only heard the usual grumblings about how bad the home plate umpire was and something about him needing glasses? Maybe he needs his eyes checked?? Other than that, it was a more relaxed environment than the prior series.
