Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens

I need something with better zoom I can carry around. I think this will do the trick. I'm heading to NYC twice this month...

I don't use Canon, although I know they make great lenses. I do have a Nikon with a 24-120 Autofocus VR (vibration reduction). It's really the only lens I ever use with the Nikon. If Canon's is as good (and I don't doubt that it is), go for it.
Happy snapping!

I own it. after the kit, it was the first lens I bought. For the money, I can't imagine anything better. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but I'm thrilled with it. I've got a 10-22mm and a 7-300mm since I've bought my 28-135, and they're great lenses, but i still use my 28-135 the most.

Check out my gallery - most everything in there is taken with that lens.

I got it at Best Buy and paid way too much, but I had a credit to burn, so I said screw it. I think I paid about $500 for it.

I just bought it for $397. I can not wait to try it out. Hopefully I'll get it before the tennis tournament this weekend, then NYC twice in August.

Up until now, have you just been using the 18-55mm?

I'm not one of those that bash the kit lens, but the 28-135 is a nice step up. Also it's a great range. Very versitle and great as a single "carry around".

I haven't really had a chance to fully utilize my Rebel XT but I've been reading a bunch, taking some pictures but I really want to get into it now. So I thought I needed a decent starter lens. I thought about getting a 50 f/1.8 first b/c I like taking ports but I thought I get something with the best of both worlds.

FWIW, I recently got a 50mm f 1.8 for my pentax and it's a fine lens but it really is of limited use to me. 50mm on a DSLR is like 75mm on a film camera and it makes me stand pretty far back from my subject, which in my case is usually my wife's floral work, but it would be the same I think with most subjects indoors where limited space is an issue. If I get another prime, I'm going shorter - 35mm or less.
JMHO.

I've got the 50 1.8 too. I honestly don't use it THAT often, but it seems like I have a MUCH higer "keeper" ratio when I do. I agree with DW, it's not for everything, but it's great at what it does. And for $80, you can't beat it with a stick.

That being said, I'm thinking about upgrading to the 50mm 1.4 - just for the faster focusing and better sharpness at 1.8 and 2.0. If I do, I'll make you a deal on my 1.8 - if you're still interested.

Good Lord, I guess not! How'd you manage that?
The K10D has the shake reduction built into the camera so I can use a slightly faster workhorse lens and still get the benefits of some image stabilization. I think I paid maybe $160.00 for a Sigma 24-135mm, f2.8-4.5 aspherical lens. It's not top of the line but, realistically, it does everything I really need for what I do.
On the other hand, if I could get anything like the deal you got on a 43mm 1.9 or a 40mm 2.8, I'd jump all over it.

It was pretty easy, actually: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8610477-8548757?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1186004399&sr=8-1

I paid $190.00 for the 1.4 on e-bay. Pentax used to make a 50mm 1.7 but they're hard to find now and there's not enough difference in price not to just get the 1.4.
My wife's got a wedding in a couple of weeks in a church with particularly lousy light. I expect I'll break out the 50mm for that one.
