View Full Version : Keeper League Opinions

I mentioned this topic in an earlier thread. It's a 12 team league keeping three players. I kept Addai, Stephen Jackson and Randy Moss. I couldn't budge the owner with Steve Smith to trade me him for Portis and Moss so I go into the draft (drafting 3rd) with the following players available. Need some opinions.
QBs available
Mark Bulger
Donavan McNabb
Jon Kitna
Eli Manning
Alex Smith
Matt Hasselbeck
Matt Leinart
Jake Delhomme
JP Losman
Brett Favre
Phillip Rivers
WR available
Lee Evans
Donald Driver
Javon Walker
Roy Williams
Anquan Boldin
Larry Fitzgerald
TJ Houshmandzadeh
RB Available
Chester Taylor
Fred Taylor
Marion Barber
Warrick Dunn
Clinton Portis

I'd love McNabb but Larry Fitzgerald would be sweet. The teams drafting ahead of me 1 has a Drew Brees, Edgerin James and Travis Henry so he could easily go WR. the next team has Thomlinson, Alge Crumpler and Reggie Wayne. One team could take the WR I want while the other the QB. Opinions?

Only 5 teams kept QBs as keepers so if I want McNabb, Bulger, Hasselbeck or Romo I would need to grab him 3rd or wait until the next round and take a Leinart or Delhomme type

What is your scoring system and roster set-up?

Passing 4 points for every TD passed.
Bonus Scoring:
Any passing TD of 40-79 yards will include a 2 point bonus.
Any passing TD of 80+ yards will include a 4 point bonus.
Rushing 6 points for every TD rushed.
Bonus Scoring:
Any rushing TD of 40-79 yards will include a 2 point bonus.
Any rushing TD of 80+ yards will include a 4 point bonus.
Receiving 6 points for every TD received.

Any receiving TD of 40-79 yards will include a 2 point bonus.
Any receiving TD of 80+ yards will include a 4 point bonus.

They give 1 point per 10 yards receiving and rushing, 1 point per 25 yard passing

What about rosters? Any flex positions?

With that scoring set-up, I don't see much reason to chase a QB early. There isn't an enormous amount of difference between the 6th best guy and the 12th best guy, so you could theoretically wait quite a few rounds before taking one. The WRs look best, and once those are gone you can stock up on RBs. I wish I was in a keeper league just because I'd want to own Adrian Peterson.

I don't know which of those WRs I'd like the best, but you're guaranteed a good one. You seem to be favoring Fitzgerald, but I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer Roy Williams. Either of those two, Boldin, Evans, or Javon Walker would be attractive.

You have to start 1 QB, and either (2 RB 2 WR) or (1 RB and 3 WR) a TE, K, def/SPT

Hrm, that devalues WRs a bit and means it's not quite as important to have backup RBs, but I'd still go with one of those wide receivers first.

On one hand, I like the fact that you did your own thing since it annoys me when people play their teams strictly based on what they read in a magazine or what some expert tells them. On the other, I find it amusing that you did the obviously wrong thing even though I, an actual expert, told you why it was the wrong thing to do.

I have your expert hanging.

I think Lee Evans is going to have a monster year.

I'm laughing at the guy that kept Crumpler. The rest of his roster must have really sucked.

I initially thought that he might be a little overrated, as the Bills are going with a rookie RB who might not be able to keep defenses honest, they don't really have a second receiver, and J.P. Losman is still their quarterback. But as inconsistent as he is, he knows that his bread is buttered by Evans, so I think he should at least match last season's numbers. He seems to be going a little low in drafts so far.

I like Lynch. I think the sample size is too small on him right now in the preseason. He's had a couple of nice gains (8 and 9 yards) but has been tackled for loss a couple of times so his 7 for 19 looks bad.

I think he will be more of a threat to catch out of the backfield then McGahee was as well.

New twist on my draft. The guy who drafted Fitzgerald is only luke warm to him. I proposed a swap of players my second for Fitzgerald and I throw in a 5th

I think Lynch will be ok, and you're right about him being more versatile. The biggest thing is that the Bills spent a crapload of money on the offensive line, so anyone is going to be better than they were last year. That said, I still don't trust Losman, but it looks like he's developing and can no longer be considered horrendously awful.

PP:
So it's one of those annoying drafts that takes forever? I wondered why you didn't post the rest of your picks.

Yeah, we start the Monday after the second pre season game. Usually takes 10 days. 12 hours in between picks. We are all over the country and have been doing this for 13 years. Now my money local league that I have been in for 16 years is this Saturday. I draft 10th

Done deal All it cost me was a flip flop of 5th round picks plus I drafted the Philly receiver Brown for him. I get Fitzgerald to move down 5 spots in the 5th.

My line up those far is

QB McNabb
RB Joseph Addai
RB Steven Jackson
WR Randy Moss
WR Larry Fitzgerald
