You might want to try this HDR technique Mark. Bright sunlight and dark shadows are going to be a pain as far as correct even exposure. If you try to get any detail in the shadow the you end up with blown highlights. Maybe posing her in the shadow with some reflected sunlight or maybe using some fill flash and underexposing in direct sunlight? I like #2 the best, but would like to see her in a solemn mood staring straight into the lens.
