i dont think it's got much (at least on paper) that the XTI doesnt have for a bit less. I've never really used one so I dont have any hands on opinions. The 40D looks interesting though.
wait for the 40D.
here's a good link to what's improved over the 30D:

it is actually mrs j that is the photog. she has a rebel xt that i got her for christmas 2 years ago. it takes great pics but i was looking at a friends 20D and saw how much easier it is to use the features that the camera provides. while the rebel takes excellent photos = to that of the 20D, it is not easy to navigate those features. so i was thinking about upgarding her for christmas if it isn't too expensive.

Are the lens mounts the same? Canon at one time seemed to change the lens mounts when they put out new camera bodies. I don't know if they still do that or not.

the 20D is a superior camera to the rebel. the picture quality is not equal.
which features are you thinking about?

same mounts -- they are both EF-S.

all of them. the D series has all of the menu controls externally so you can quickly access them.
i read half a dozen test comparisons between the two and each showed the pic quality differences as negligible so i decided to save some $$. i wish i hadn't. she has good glass so that isn't an issue.

I don't know which menu controls she uses regularly, but on my XTi I've pretty much gotten things down where I can make any changes fast with little to no problem. the only thing i regularly go into the menu for is to use Exposure Bracketing and format my card. everything else (metering, af mode, af point, and obviously exposure and ISO controls) are done with tactile buttons.
