Just a few photos from the Vikings match against Marvin Ridge.
Ledford won the Davidson County Volleyball tournament by beating West Davidson in the semis and SW Randolph in the finals. Does anyone know how the great 8 went?
Anyone have any opinions on some of the best clubs in Gaston/Mecklenburg area? My daughter has played for LNVB that past 3 years, thinking about waying our options this year.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a volleyball game, battle of the unbeatens, Watauga came to AC last night for a conference showdown, good crowd and great volleyball, Butler (Watauga) best setter in the conference by far, well coached team, Watauga took the first match, then AC took the next two, it looked to be all AC's match in game three until Watauga came storming back to take a 17-15 lead, then the match was dead even until Watuga was able to win the forth match, heading into the fifth and final match, AC dominated the net with great play from the middle and outside, Watauga passed the ball soooooooo well it was hard for AC to get a pass off because of Watauga's perfect sets, anyway AC pulled it out, WOW, bet it will be another great game when AC travels to Watuga at the end of this month...... GREAT VOLLEYBALL BY BOTH TEAMS, KEEP PLAYING HARD!!!!!!!!!!!

Great game to watch, Reynolds has a powerful middle hitter #12 very solid, AC played as a team though, they used several angles from there setters and capitalized, big game frm AC's middle hitter with several blocks, outside hitter had good game as well, but all around good defence by the entire team.
AC won 3-2 and are 11-0 .............CONGRATULATIONS to both teams for a great game..............

I hope the jv team can learn from the varsity team and get ready for next year, except for the outside hitter, all the girls played JO's and it shows that it help them not only to play better but play as a team

Well I was away from TBR for awhile and didn't realize we had a volleyball thread!! This is great!
As of today (09/18/2008) the Defending State 4A Champions Person Rockets from Roxboro NC are tied at the top of the conference with East Chapel Hill. Both are 5-1 in conference play and will face each other again in two weeks at Roxboro. The Rockets are 11-2 overall and looking very strong again despite loosing 5 of it's starters from last years Championship team. NExt week will be a crucial week for the Rockets as they face a strong Chapel Hill team and also Riverside who has handed the Rockets there only conference loss to date. Both games will be at Rocket GYm.
Pac-six conference standings are hard to find but at the top is Person and East Chapel Hill both tied at 5-1. Riverside and Chapel Hill are tied in second at 4-2 and Jordan is 3-3....the other schools I have no clue but are not contenders at this time. This conference once again this year is very competitve in my opinion.
Will update again next week.

vbdad,
Yes, Liz is a very good setter, Butler just seems to not make any mistakes, also, can jump, very good server as is Liz, very solid, plays defense very well, and you did point out some other good setters in the league as well, as you know though, it takes a good pass, good set and good KILL!!!!!! All in one sequence, that's where we have improved at.........
topdog and vbdad,
Topdog your right, Butler is a good setter, but I have watched Liz work at her position, Liz is a very good setter and that is one reason we are able to compete, but I have to mention the rest of the TEAM, from the passing to the POWERFUL middle and outside kills! We probably have the best middle and outside hitter in the conference.........Big bench!

Yes, kmale, I have watched the team improve, The middle for AC hits the ball as hard as I have ever seen, and the Morris girl is just an athlete, they are fun to watch...........Who would of thought, VOLLEYBALL at AC is coming together...........:Reagan-hittin-head-

New to the volleyball scene, you can tell from my username. Looking into club volleyball (DD is a freshman), but she still wants to play school softball in the spring. Is it possible to juggle both along with schoolwork? Are there any clubs that cater to this situation? Any advice about club volleyball - she's played travel softball for years. Last night the Chapel Hill Tigers swaggered into Rocket Gym and took a bite out of the Rockets and swept the Rockets 3-0. The Tigers were very sharpe and played as a team with nothing to loose and were very effecient against the Rockets. The Tigers payed the Rockets back from there early season loss to the Rockets 25-19/25-22/25-19. The loss by the Rockets dropped them into second place in the Pac-six.
Other action in the Pac-six:
League leader East Chapel Hill had there hands full at Riverside but pulled out the win 3-2. 23-25/26-24/25-19/20-25/15-11.
Jordan was at Nothern Durham and swept the Knights 3-0. 25-17/26-24/25-10.
Standings as of 09/24/2008:
East Chapel Hill: 7-1 PAc Six 10-5 Overall
Person: 6-2 Pac Six 12-3 Overall
Riverside: 5-3 Pac Sic 9-5 Overall
Chapel Hill: 5-3 Pac Six 5-9 Overall
Jordan: 5-3 Pac Six 11-4 Overall
Northern: 2-6 Pac Six 4-9 Overall
Southern: Unknown
Hillside: Unknown
With 5 teams making the playoffs this year from the Pac-Six Conference there is going to be a battle for that top spot for the conference champion as home team advantage is BIG during the Playoffs. Will update again after THursday night games as the Rockets have a crucial home game against Riverside in Rocket Gym.

2upthemiddle, it will be difficult to juggle both JO volleyball and travel softball. Both happen in the spring. If you were the one in control of practice and tournament schedules for both teams, you could make it work. Otherwise somebody gets cheated somewhere. Same with basketball. The AAU and YBOA seasons are in the spring. Trust me, I would like to see athletes play everything, but sometimes it can't work. Good Luck!!! I hope it works out...

2upthemiddle, I'm going to offer my opinion (and it's just an opinion plus some experience).
First I think it is great that an student athlete plays more than one sport. But also if a kid is better in one than another they may want to start specializing in that sport and refine there skills in that sport. Not to mention the cost to the parents and time commentment. But that should be up to the student. If they want to play two sports I think it is great. Now if you have a legtimate athlete with college potential in a sport......I would concentrate on that sport.
Now back yo your original question. And I am going to address this from to perspectives. One as a coach and one as a parent.
Coaching Perspective: What kind of club ball are you considering? I ask this because of cost and time for you as a parent and what kind of committment will I get as a coach. There are different levels of competition for club ball and vastly different levels of money you can spend. if she is looking just to play the sport do a local club team (ask around your area for who is good) and be upfront with the coach about softball. Most will work with you about the schedule. One advantage you have is the Carolina Region Volleyball Tournaments are already scheduled for 2009 as probably most softball tournaments so you can look at potential conflicts. All Carolina Region tournaments are usually on Saturdays only unless there is a exception for some reason. Now if your daughter has the potential to be a stud volleyball player you may want to try out for a club team that plays more on the national level and travels more out of state to the top tournaments and will see the best competition. These tournaments are also already scheduled and you would need to be upfront with the coaches going in if there may be a conflict. Most coaches will work with a kid if they play both. I know I have in the past.
Parents Perspective: Money, Money, Money!!! Unless you daughter has the desire, committment, and skills to play college volleyball OR softball don't waste your money with travel teams so much. Having already been through and experienced recruiting for my son and highschool baseball and currently with my daughter and volleyball and seeing the recruiting process in both sports one thing is a constant; if they are good they will come and see your kid! I truly believe money is best spent if a kid wants to be seen by going to schools and attending there camps!! Especially the ones that have other college coaches working the camps. And in volleyball the big out of state tournaments are where the coaches visit to see recruits and like other sports the coaches are a close knit family and share information on players.
Volleyball IS a great sport and a great experience for kids! I didn't mean to get long winded and this is just my opinion as I am sure other people have some information to share also.
I suggest you go to this website for tons of great information for our state region volleyball association called Carolina Region Volleyball. The schedules for the 2009 season are already posted with tentative dates. Also there is a listing of all clubs in the state.

If you have any questions or want to discuss more drop me a private message. Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks for the information. I kind of figured travel softball and club volleyball were not a good mix, but wondered about high school softball mixed with club. Sounds like the best bet is to be upfront with the coaches about scheduling difficulties. As for potential, the coaches think she has some, but I'm new to this thing, so who knows? I looked at the schedule on the link - does it really end for most players by mid-April? What do the summers look like for those committed to volleyball? Attending camps and summer practices with the school team? One more question - sorry - is it best to try out for an older club team and be told you're not good enough, then fall back on one of the younger teams?
The best thing for a player is to play on theyr own age bracket, I do coach travel volleyball, and on years past have girls that play up and also that play sofball, on my personal opinion is firts: stay as much you can witing your age group, is more fun and enjoyable second: on my personal and humble opinion, stick with whetever sport you love the most, it hurts a team to loose a player in the middle of the season and is hard to find a replacement later on

One more question - sorry - is it best to try out for an older club team and be told you're not good enough, then fall back on one of the younger teams?
I will try and address your questions in your order:
1. You can play volleyball year round if you want to. For the regional teams only (In North Carolina) yes the season ends in mid april usually. For those who play at a higher, national level they play in to June and in some cases July.
2. Summers here for the highschool girls starts in June sometime with conditioning and weights and some open gyms. In July we have a annual volleyball camp for all ages that the Highschool girls work at with the younger kids and it has been a great success and in my opinion has helped the Highschool program and keeps the younger kids interested in volleyball. Some of our girls attend college camps in our area also. I have one or two I would recommend if you are interested but I will not post here. Don't want to tick off anyone!! :)....Just like any other sport they do need a break sometimes. We played this year all the way into June....so when we finished I didn't let my daughter touch a ball until July. She did workouts with her team but no playing.
3. I agree with vbdad on this one. Let her play in her own age group and if she is good she will shine and have fun! If she is only a Freshman she will enjoy her own age group more for now and if she developes into a really good player then you may consider moving up in age groups for travel ball. Age DOES make a difference. And to get a perspective of that watch a JV game and then go watch a really good varsity team with some Seniors and Juniors with experience and observe the difference in the speed and skills of the players. In some cases it's really a big difference. So in my opinion let her play with her own age group.
Just a bit of advice...keep an open mind, be positive, don't judge her and let her have fun!!! it breaks my heart to see parents kill a kids desire for something with harsh comments or negative comments. I promise our kids are trying there best and in most cases they want to please there parents!! So we don't need to yell or shout at them....just encourage them and listen!! Some of my best times so far with my kids has been just listening to them talk about games......they just might surprise you!!!
Come and enjoy the game at Taylorsville. .................................................. ......gooooooo cougars:N1Imgoingtostay::corn::corn:

The Person Rockets had a repeat match against the Riverside Pirates last night at Rocket Gym. Pirates were the first team to hand the Rockets there first conference loss of the season back on September 2nd. Well last night was some extrodinary Volleyball from both teams!! This was fun to watch!!! The Pirates came in looking to upset the Rockets again and looked if they just might do it by taking the first match 13-25 from the Rockets. The Rockets came out a little flat. But the Rockets found there game in match 2 25-19. Match 3 was a tough hard fought match from both teams with some awesome volleys on both sides. Rockets took that match 28-26. But the Pirates would not go away and took match 4 23-25 and again some awesome volleys and defense on both sides. In the 5th and decisive game the Rockets came out smoking and jumped on the Pirates and won 15-10. Rockets take the match 3-2!!!....13-25,25-19,28-26,23-25,15-10
Rockets move back into a first place tie with East Chapel Hill who was swept by Chapel Hill last night 3-0. The Chapel Hill tigers seem to be getting hot and on a roll!!!....25-17,25-17,25-22

Were you at the same game tonight? (watauga-alexander central) Watauga won because they played better, hit better and just played better as a team. I think you may be a little confused, AC really did not win the first match. Watauga was off and played their worst match of the year and still took it to 5 games. Tonight was the real Watauga, just good team work and awesome coaching.

I agree with mitchellp on this one... I suppose you didn't attend the same game tonight. It is obvious who the better team is. I honestly don't believe you can compare records when looking back AC has not been up against challenging teams out of conference like Watauga has. But tonight was good volleyball and both teams came out with good things. Good luck to both talented teams with the rest of their seasons.
Im going to agree with you, Watauga won the game, but also ac play one of their worst game, all hitter were off target, score was 3-0. and I'll going to say great coaching by Watauga, they always have a good volleyball program. will see have we finish at the end, let keep the most important think..........play,have fun ...enjoy the game

Nobody is putting down teams. This was a great volleyball match. Bottom line is that Watauga leads the games 5-3 in the two matches. It's not fair for either one of us to evaluate the opposing team if we haven't seen them play all their games. I think it was you who said Watauga didn't really win tonight, which sounds rather silly in a 3-0 match. This was a legitimate win in a competitive match.

For the record, Watauga has beaten all conference opponents 3-0 except the one match at AC. I think AC lost a couple of games to AC Reynolds and at least one game to East Burke. The results speak for itself.

Hats off to Watauga and there coaching, they were ready! they back set, they front set, they quick set.......AC's passing was terrible, there sets even worse and there hitting was non exsistant...........not the AC I have been watching, Watauga was the better team tonight, they did everything right, they made EVERY pass, EVERY set, and most of the hits. THEY SET EVERY PLAY, they challenged AC everytime at the net, the AC players that needed to preform didn't, AC free balled almost EVERY play, hard to win like that...As far as schedule, AC has played several tough teams this year, they beat Newton Conover , good team, Davie County, Statesville, North Lincolon, how did Watauga do against Newton Conover? and as you know in Watauga, it's hard to win EVERY game, dosen't matter how good or bad the teams you play are. Watauga and AC are 15-1, (Watauga may have 2 losses) because they are playing well as a team and have good coaching, good summer programs, and are the 2 best teams in the conference.....Hats off to both teams, and good luck girls! You asked how Watauga did against New Conover...they have never played them. How did AC do against Providence? Watauga beat them. I actually thought several of your AC players did well. It seemed like the passers were picking up a lot hits. Watauga was just ready for them last night. They played an awesome game as a TEAM and that is what it takes to win against other great teams. I agree, Hat's off to both teams!

Foard is a very good team! I thought they beat you once! That is my whole argument, I think AC beat you once, their a good team or I thought they were............Watauga somewhere around 15-2, loss to foard and AC, AC is 15-1 loss to Watauga, Foard somewhere around 15-1, these are good teams, we all play a pretty tough schedule, Watauga may play the toughest schedule in country, you still can be beat at anytime by any team if you don't come to play.........I can't even give a compliment to Watauga, I tried. Here's a personnal one..........GO CHANDLER, keep up the good work................Good luck to the NW4A

the watauga record is 17-2. I do not recall anyone from Watauga saying that ac was not a good team. If I am correct, it is only people from your side that said they did not play well and that Watauga did not really win the game. Please! Yes, we all know how you feel about Chandler. You have stated it many times. We think she is pretty awesome too. It takes more than a setter to win games. All of our girls are the bomb! I also do not recall Watauga saying anything about not being able to be beat. Where are you pulling that one from? Not me! This all started with you guys trying to take a good win from Watauga. They won in 3 because they played hard as a team!! When you guys beat us, did we get on here and say ac didn't really win it? Nope...we didn't. I think everyone agreed that ac is a good team. I do not know anyone from Watauga that would say otherwise.
I may have said something that came acroos the wrong way, yeah i said that ac loss the game, but never intended to take anything from watauga, we all know that they have a good program, but i was just traying to said is that ac just didn't play to their potential, i been to all their games, and know what the are able to do as a team. go watauga and go cougars, one think is for sure, it shows that went girls play jo's their school team get better, do you agree?

As far as AC is concerned, they may set some school records this year. most wins, most assists, most kills, all for good reason.........

I was at the game last night between Watauga and Alexander Central and you know I am pretty sure there were 6 players on each side of the net not just one or two! All parents think their kid is the best so lets not just pick out one or two to comment on this is a TEAM SPORT!!!

You are so right! I hate when you guys single out certain players that you KNOW personally. Most of those girls read your comments on this board and it is hurtful when you give all of the credit to one or two players. I also think it would be really tough to pick Watauga's all con. players, because they are all so good!!
I don't think we are single out players, once again we are making big deal out of nothing, we were just trying to go away abouth my comments on the game, also we didn't mention just one name we mention several names just for fun, i'll agree with you guys all ladies deserve to be recognize, they play there lives out there, I think the most important thing ,is that 1. jo's really improves school teams. 2. girls get to fell comfortable with eachother in the court. 3. we will like to see a more competitive conference teams. regarless what school they from, remember anything that get girls/boys away from drug, drinking and make them better student is what is all abouth it.:invasion:
I mention several names of girls i know or that i got their names from their school website, from all conference, no preference was giving by me, on any of the girls from any school, i just mention the ones i think are playing well at this time, it may change at the end of the season:bonk:

Last year I couldn't get 3 people to post about WHS volleyball and now we have an all out war fare between Alexander and Watauga. Also knowing WHS, we have some in fighting from parents because their child isn't getting the recognition they deserve (they all work just as hard and should all be honored). Honestly I hear that once a week.
Watauga played like crap when they went to Alexander and lost in five. Alexander played bad (according to your fans) and got swept. It will come down to what each team does vs ACR. WHS has them at home, AC on the road. If not we will play a tiebreak for the #1 seed.
As for praising one player because she played well on hear, big freakin deal. Chandler did have a great game, if this guy wants to point that out good for him. Just like if you want to say your daughter had a great game, its your choice.

Lets please keep the thread clean and positive people. I am thrilled we have a volleyball thread but I can tell you the moderators of This Board Rocks will not tolerate parents negative comments, negative comments about programs or coaches. Keep that stuff to yourselves. If not they will lock the thread!!!
Also if we keep this a clean thread maybe just maybe it will grow and some college coaches will read some good things about players and programs....and yes coaches do visit TBR!!!
Ok to mention certain palyers that are good and have potential. But back up your info with stats and names.
I would like to say thank you to all that post here about there scools and conferences!! This sport has grown by leaps and bounds this past few years in NC especially at the high school level and club ball. And when club season starts we can start a thread for that!!!
Good luck to all and the playoffs again this year are going to be great again!!:trophy::trophy::trophy:

Thank You cheeze. The reason I asked ( I am sure I am not the only one)about a separate forum for volleyball is to promote the sport and the girls who the game. It can and should be positive.
Any updates on the status of a separate forum?

my dd never played volleyball, consumed by softball. so tell me something about club volleyball, some of the large clubs, locations, how many games they play, when their season starts and ends and just how much does it cost to play club volleyball. i'm trying to compare this with softball travel ball.
also, in our area (NC) what college has the dominate volleyball team/program in D1, D2, and D3 and who would you like to be interviewed as a college coach????
cheeze105
10-03-08, 07:49 AM
with playoffs coming soon, I want to remind the volleyball players that the chances of you being seen by a college coach increase with every game you go further into the playoffs. you need to always have it in the back of your mind that "you're always being watched". your conduct during the game is just as important as your conduct before/after the game. college coaches look for not only what you do on the court, they also look at your conduct coming onto the court and leaving the court and also your conduct on the bench. I would also like to remind parents/players that if you see a college coach in the stands, you can only initiate contact after the match is done, NOT during the game. If there is more than one game, you have to wait until the last game is over. This is also the time of year when you should be carrying a stat sheet with your vital information on it. If anyone is interested in what should be on this sheet, contact me and i will post a sample on this forum.
for all the information abouth travel vb. you can look it up at

The lastest PrepVolleyball.com national highschool rankings of the top 100 highschool volleyball teams in the country include two teams from North Carolina as of 10/02/2008. Those two teams are:
#43. Mount Tabor
#84 Cardinal Gibbons
Teams classified as "on the bubble" just outside the top 100 that were mentioned lately in North Carolina in no paticular order were:
Broughton, D.H.Conley, J.H.Rose, Myers Park, Person, Triton, West Henderson
As one can see we have some pretty darn good volleyball in this state and it is growing better every year!! Keep up the good hard work ladies!!
:clapclap::clapclap::clapclap::clapclap::clapclap: :clapclap:
Hopefully, TBR can play a role in giving much needed attention to the players, schools and clubs. I have found the more attention you can give to a sport the more it grows. Good luck to all the players and schools. Let's see if we can help push more teams on the Top 100 list
THANKS! It's great............Glad to see so much attention..

5. High Point Central 2-6
6. Smith 0-8
I know they all have 2 conference games left this week with the conference tournament starting next Monday....East and Page play Thursday at East for East's lone Senior Night and if East wins I think there will be a coin flip for who is #2 and #3 in the tournament with the one who goes the furthest in the tournament carrying out the #2

Usually if WHS cannot win something in this league I hope that Alexander wins it since I like most of Alexanders athletic department. However I have to pull for AC Reynolds so WHS can be in control of their own destiny in this league.
topdog5532
10-07-08, 02:22 PM
Well, I am the same way, I usually pull for Watauga if AC can't win, but it dosen't matter, they both will do well in the playoffs........all 3 will make it.
should be a good one Thursday..........Don't forget, Watauga has to play Reynolds again also.... It's volleyball, anything can happen!

would love to see the the rockets take the next game. After that, I really think I would like watauga to win it. They are a great team with several good players. We have great players too. This is just not our year. You never know, we play watauga at watauga soon. That would be quite an upset.

10-07-08, 02:40 PM
I thought WHS would have trouble at ACR as it is always a hostile atmosphere however Alexander will attest to this, WHS has the most raucous volleyball atmosphere in the league. It would be a tremendous upset to beat WHS in Boone esp since thats senior night.

10-07-08, 02:50 PM
didn't know it was their senior night. not that it should make too much difference. The rockets will all be there in full force too. Whs came to win last game, the girls were blocking are best hitters and we just could not return anything. We will see. Should be a loud game anyway.
topdog5532
10-07-08, 02:53 PM
Yes, always difficult to win there! I'm pulling for Watauga anyway! Think they are the better team......Taking nothing away from Reynolds though! They have a good team.....Watauga is just solid all the way through......Should be a good one to watch. AC has to be ready for today, then Thursday........It will be loud at Reynolds, no doubt.....

but I think their front line is all young players and that may make them weak at times. Not sure if that is correct. Actually heard it from a dad on their team. The good new for them is if they are all young, they are going to have a good team later.

Don't know what grade there middle is but, she is good.....Thought she was a Senior.. Reynolds has one of the best middles I have seen, Senior also I think.
rocketfan1
10-07-08, 03:06 PM
again not sure, but I think both of their middles are juniors or younger. One is blonde and and the other one, a little taller with dark hair. The dark hair one can slam the ball hard. At last years game, she had like 14 aces in one game with us, it was crazy. I think she is going to be great when she is older. Just not sure if she is 10th or 11th

Actually, if we are being honest. The setter is pretty good, but compared to the rest out there, I don't know. Maybe she had an off game with us. I am not saying she is bad by any means. I can't remember the outside hitter so much, but I am terrible with names. They all must be pretty good to have gotten to this level in the conference.
they are good player, that how they got here, liz the setter is on her way to brake school record for most assist this year, also she has got the i think the team before self award twice, if not mistaken, if anybody remember please post it, Kistin the outside hitter was name to the all conference team last year if im not mistaken

GO Cougars. After looking at the NCHSAA brackets I want WHS to get the 2. Much easier road.
#1 in the Northwestern 4A's track to the 4th round - SW4A #5, SW4A #3, and SW4A #1 all at home.
#2 in the Northwestern 4A's track to the 4th round - Queen City #3, Big South #1 on the road, and then the Southwestern 4A #2 at home.
I will take my chances on the second option.

I hope all rocket fans will show their support and travel to whs for the match tomorrow. It will be needed as they have a very loud fan base and usually have a big turnout for their home games.
I know they can take them! It can be done.

South Rowan is no longer in 4A - North Piedmont 3A now - Girls are actually doing pretty well this year. 13-4 Conf going into tonights season final with North Iredell (17-0). South has really matured and have gotten stronger since they played earlier in the year. Hats off to NI on their great season, but I'm sure the "Iredell Raiders" will get the "Rowan Raiders" best shot. Place should be rockin'. Best wishes NI driving down. See you there!

Thanks EnkaBall05. I appreciate the info. I understand how it is. Local papers just don't understand what volleyball is all about. They need to get out and watch volleyball being played now. Then maybe they will get it. Hopefully that will happen in the near future.
I heard the standings were like this, they thought:
#1Enka
#2N. Buncombe
#3Asheville
#4Franklin
Does this conference play a conference tournament and if so is there any information on how it is going or how it has turned out?

1.- ACHS

It seems odd that papers (specifically the Charlotte Observer, probably others) carry all the details of HS tennis matches, taking up multiple columns with names and scores of all matches, and only carry the game (set) scores of the volleyball matches. Rarely are there any details of games, key players, etc. Is that because the coaches don't have the stats when they call in the scores? I will give the Observer some credit, though. They've had a couple nice articles about volleyball here lately. My beef is really with the daily reporting of scores. I'm sure the kids would get a kick out of seeing their names in the paper like the baseball players, tennis players, CC runners, basketball players, soccer players, football players, etc. Plus it gives the average fan an idea of who the key players are out there, and some names to follow.

I was at the game last night and one of the dad's of the other team, I think ACHS not Watauga, told me that they had just won the conference and the coin flip broke the tie? Is this true?
We have played both teams and while they are both great, Watauga is by far the stronger team. The ACHS parent told me that is why they had driven to WHS to see the flip!?! If you are tied for conference, why do you not play a tie breaker to decide it. A coin flip is a little strange for a title and seems a bit unfair to the other teams.
Just my opinion!!

The coin flip did NOT break the tie. It simply placed them (ACHS) in the first seeding and WATAUGA in the 2nd. That does not mean that ACHS is the conference winner. It means they are CO-Champs. I do not know why they used a coin flip because if they had looked at the games, they would have seen that WATAUGA would have won it that way. (beating the other teams in 3 instead of taking it to 4 or 5 games. But it was a great match last night. The rockets played the pioneers very hard.

In reply to the coin flip... We had the same thing happen with the Coastal Conference! JH Rose and DH Conley were tie if you looked at straight wins and losses. Going the next step and looking at points or sets won, Rose would have been the top seed. The ADs from the conference got together and flipped a coin, saying that's what the rule book says.
Conley won the coin toss and took the top seed and Rose the second seed... but Rose won the Conference Tournament anyway!! :shiny:
Rose will host Chapel Hill on Saturday! Just a little pointer for Chapel Hill fans -- for volleyball parking, as you're going down Arlington Blvd., turn into the parking lot on the tennis courts/football stadium side of the school and go in the side entrance where it looks like a courtyard. There's a huge band competition going on at the same time and buses will be in the main parking lot. And plan for some traffic, ECU is playing a football game at noon!

The coin toss is due to the State playoffs, the reason they don't play a tie-breaker is it is easier to declare CO-Champions than it is to play tie-breaker, the playoffs start soon after the last game and it would be hard to get the games in. Also with the seeding in this case Watauga was the real winner, (not by their choice, but by coin toss) #2 seeding looks a little easier than #1 but they still have to play the game no matter who they play, as far as Watauga being the better team, well we will just have to wait and see if the 2 plays each other in the playoffs, I think AC has only lost 1 game and Watauga has lost 2, we can go back and forth on this but I'm taking the high road and saying both teams are very good and have very talented young ladies and AC Reynolds as well, I am pulling for the NW4A teams, whom ever they are! GO NW4A!!!!!!!!!!!!!:N1Greatjob02:

How nice of you to take the high road after you make a comment!
We have been through this before, watauga played much tougher teams and beat you guys and acrhs and ebhs, in three. The one time your team beat us it took you guys 5 to win. It took you 5 to beat acrhs and I think it took you 4 to beat ebhs. I will take the high road and say they are all great teams too.
Watauga appreciates your support at the game the other night.
Thank you, mitchellp! Watauga did play 24 matches to Alexanders 21 but who's counting! But I will go along and take the high road and say they are all great teams. And that it was so nice and such good sportsmanship for everyone from Alexander to take the time to support Watauga the other night maybe someday we can return favor.

4A I like Mt. Tabor and Watauga (west) (East) Person and Rose

no idea ... have not seen catholic play since zahn was playing (3-4 years ago??).
and last time i saw foard was at a match with kings mountain ... again probably 2-3 years ago.
just hoping for a good close match. i never enjoy the blowouts ... i want my $5 worth (or is it $6?).

southpaw 2 ... did you make it? if so, what did you think?
i put this note in the 3A discussion too:
charlotte catholic over newton fred t foard ... 3-1
game 1: 25-15
game 2: 25-17
game 3: 17-25
game 4: 25-22
catholic has relatively short team with a lot of hitting from the back row (#9, #14). had 2 jump servers ... neither one SHOULD have scored many points on those top spin and lolly pop serves.
i do NOT think i was watching the state 3A champs tonight ... hands pretty sloppy on both sides.
cost me $4 ...
btw - i liked the way foard #12 swings; definitely not afraid to hit the ball.

I did not make it all the way to Charlotte--too late. Stopped at Hickory instead and saw the Mooresville game. Mooresville was very scrappy and a GREAT defensive team, but they were no match for Hickory's front line. Hickory started out a little sloppy and M. took the first game 26-24, I think. But, then the hitters/blockers got in the groove. Hickory rotates in a strong front line--Mooresville got blocked a few times too often and started hitting the ball long. Hickory's libero played a great defensive game, but the front line and some good serving late in the match won it for them. They have 3 hitters who put the ball down and wore down the M's defense.
Heard that Charlotte Catholic was a very strong team...no? Wanted to see them play. Wasn't Foard kind of small this year? Would like to see N. Iredell play. Heard that they haven't lost a GAME this entire season.
75gitane
10-21-08, 11:46 PM
both catholic and foard were relatively small ...
guess i'm comparing this catholic team to the zahn days (1999-2001 or so). that catholic team was BEAST! this team nothing like that one ...
i would not expect this catholic team to go much farther ...

Who do they have next? Do you think that they can make it to the sectional round? Can anyone beat N. Iredell? Did Buncombe beat Statesville? How strong is that MTNA conference--have not seen any of them play? Thought Enka was the whole conference, but they are gone.

North did beat Hickory in September. Just spoke with a Mom that has all the scores. Wealth of info there...
25-17
25-18
25-19
Probably means little today. North is home throughout and there was a good crowd there last night, that helps.
BTW...I believe a former Raider volleyball player is the HC at Hickory so the schools have some ties.
The anybody knows how they are going to align the conferences next year in the 4-a, 3-a & 2-a?
