Hotlink Backlash: Filepile Posting Gihad is a GO!
Read previous threads here and here.
Quick background: Random forum user posts a hotlink (steals bandwidth/image) to a picture of our beloved Bettie Page on one of my sites. I ask moderator to remove it. He ignores requests. I substitute goatse.cx image on my server in it's place. Hilarity ensues. Forum newbs get very upset; how dare I come to their forum (which I've never seen or even looked at) and "post" this disgusting pick. "You'll get someone fired!" "Think of the children!" Hypocrisy, as these same people regularly submit posts consisting of: gay bashing, their own strands of pornography, other "gross" pictures, and numerous other NSFW activities. Their site does not require any sort of confirmation. It's simply vBulletin software without the "mailed password" verification turned on.
Regardless, I try to take the high road. I remove the offending image from MY server, since the forum moderator still, at that time, hadn't deleted the thread/post/hotlink. I ask again, posting an apology if anyone was offended, along with a helpful explanation of what hotlinking is, why it is wrong, and that it will cause a lot of trouble. This post draws even more ire. One overzealous user named "Puttingood" tracks down my whois info and find outs that my "real" name is ALAN SMITHEE. (Check imdb.com or google.com if you've never heard of Alan Smithee.) Obviously, we're dealing with a big brain trust/think-tank here. Anyway, promises to have my "name and passwords in a day" ensue, along with various "fuck you"s, insults about my mother and non-existent sister, my "shit site", and so on.
All fine and dandy, but threats to "hotlink" all of my images in other forums draw my attention. Particularly troubling since the message forum/domain owner suggested that they register as "me" in other forums, and then hotlink. Ouch. Hold it right there, Sparky.
The majority of them still do not understand what hotlinking is and say that I should be happy my site "got traffic" from them!
My final response was:
"I'm sorry it wasn't resolved to your satisfaction. Strike two, I guess."
The response I got from the ringleader, Puttingood:
"You must be trippin, you stupid fuck. You think you the first one that ever struck me out. Stupid little shit of counting strikes is why you posted that pic to start with. Let me help you get to strike three----You are a pussy mutherfucking punk and your brother is fucking your sister but only when your momma ain't using the couch to fuck you.
Now take that and run with it and do what ever you feel you need to do. I'll take care of my end. You don't need to call the third strike, all you need to do is get some fire under that chicken shit ass of yours and make some kind of move. Don't come back with no "Are you threatening me" bullshit. Of course I am, I am telling you that if you get in my face that you will not win and the only strike out you see will be a line drive to your fucking nose. Go to hell punk, eatshit and run rabbits.
PS--if that ain't enough then please tell me what I can say to unstick your climbing gear."
