HOW is it legal for a team in the NW4a/3a conference to have a player that is a 2009 transfer and does not take classes at the actual school? Can a player play on a high school team without attending the school? I was told this student takes classes at Lenoir Rhyne and is allowed to play on the team because they really wanted her. Can you please tell me why there is not a rule against this?

good question. you have to be present for at least half of the school day to be eligible. not sure how that can be. but i'm sure at this point in the year, that if was illegal that surely something would have been said before now.

I am not sure if many people knew about this player until a few weeks ago and now I think they just don't know how to bring it up. Just would like to know the answer.

I want to think if a high school athlete is taking all of the courses at a school such as a college, with out athletics, they can participate at the highschool of the district they live in. But again, not positive.

so, you think that it should be legal? I feel like the kids should have to attend school where they play a sport or don't play the sport. I know the rules state that you have to be a school a certain amount of time during the day to even be allowed to dress out with the team and play, so how are they getting by that one rule? I feel like it leaves a great deal of holes for these girls that have started with the Hickory program and have been there for four years and then had a a transfer come in their senior year and she is not even really there during school hours!!! Strange indeed. I have a feeling that someone has a little explaining to do...please. Just would be nice to have it answered so that everyone is aware and then we can find out that it is legal. I am not a coach, so I do not have the rules.
My first guess is that this girl lives in that school's district, but is being home-schooled and is taking some classes at the local college for high school credit. That's just a guess.
YOu can always contact the NCHSAA to ask them about the rules.

They do make rules for a reason. I just hope that if it is true they will do something about it so that it does not continue to happen. Otherwise, do not have the rules. It should not be up to the parents to call and complain about it. It may be too late to do anything about it this year.

i havent followed up to verify it passed or failed but that rule was actually discussed. and its not just her living in the district. the rule was also allowing someone to go to a neighboring school if their school didnt offer a sport.
Say you are at a school without football the way Highland Tech was supposed to be. So you go play at North Gaston.
obviously if you are homeschooled your school doesnt offer a sport.
and why would you not cheer for this girl? if she is taking college classes instead of high school classes and has the grades to do it, applaude, not protest.

the last time I checked asking a question was not protesting. just asking to get an answer about the fact it is a rule or not. I stated that I do not know??? My only problem is if it is AGAINST the rules. You have to follow those pesky things sometimes. If we don't want our kids to have to play by rules, let's just get rid of them. I did not hear anyone that was not cheering for her.:huh2:

thats cool. i am glad to see you are the exception.
in my experience, when people start questioning elegibilty, they are trying to find a reason for a person or team to be punished.
i did look over the state site but couldnt find the actual ruling on this

i questioned our AD about this and he kinda scratched his head. we've all heard of home schooled players playing on hs teams, but he's never heard of a situation like this......in the past, if i've ever had a question that couldnt be answered at the school level, i've contacted ric strunk at the nchsaa. i know a lady has been given some of these responsibilities now, i think her name is que tucker. she responds pretty promptly i might add and in a language i understand also, as ric could get pretty technical some times.

The program at LR is only offered at one or two schools. I think that it might only be offered through the city school and not the county. So, if this player was accepted into the LR program and was a county student she would have to transfer to a city school in order to be eligible for it. Therefore, she had to transfer for academic reasons.

and an academic transfer doesnt effect your athletic elegibility * case solved

NO, just want to know what the deal is for next year. What ever happened to following the rules?? Or are you one of those that like to just make them up to best fit your needs? If the rules say she is legal then she is legal. Either way she is a great player and the team is wonderful. The question is did they follow the rules???

No, mam. Welcome to TBR. :cool4:
I did have a kid wrestle for me that went to another school that did not have a wrestling team...but he lived in the district of the school I coached so he was able to wrestle for that school.

she still hasnt received an answer and i'm told its being investigated with no determination at this time. they are slow at everything......
This situation would fall under the same rule as the kids who go to the new "middle college" schools. The kids here who go there participate in athletics at the high school whos district they live in. As for this girl I would say everything is on the up and up.
