64-61 in inaugural game in Miami's new Convocation Center.
The freshmen are this teams saviors and this teams bane.
They looked clueless down the stretch. They should have won this one going away.

Couldn't hold it once they got a decent lead. Perry did an unusually good job of coaching his players through it to keep it close.
Both of these teams were too darn eager to throw up some three-pointers tonight. But I guess that's now the trend. Maybe moving the line back to the international mark like they did earlier in selected games will change that slightly.

That's the best Dukey imitation I can do...
NO one here thinks Doh was outcoached? Nah, me neither. Too much talent on this team to lose to Miami - and Alonzo didn't even play...
Good to see Dayton beat Marquette tonight too...but, they must suck cause Duke beat them...
It's more fun to see a Heel team WITH talent lose, than it was last season...

This says it all: The Tar Heels scored 18 consecutive points in the second half, then went the final 12:10 without a basket. They were 0-for-9 in overtime and shot 31 percent for the game.
Tar Heels are still holding at 8 victories this season, same as last year (not that I would even believe they could lose their remaiing games). Read this early AP story. This guy must've been a graduate of the UNC School of Journalism after his Doherty remarks. LarryD can you check out his credentials?
North Carolina Drops OT Decision To Miami, 64-61
By Steven Wine, AP Sports Writer
CORAL GABLES, FL - Darius Rice hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 2.5 seconds left to force overtime, then scored the only basket in the extra period to help the Miami Hurricanes open their new arena with a 64-61 victory over North Carolina on Saturday night.
The Tar Heels scored 18 consecutive points in the second half, then went the final 12:10 without a basket. They were 0-for-9 in overtime and shot 31 percent for the game.
North Carolina coach Matt Doherty was angry that no foul was called when Jawad Williams missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer as time ran out. A TV replay showed that Miami's Paulo Coelho appeared to hit Williams on the forearm as he shot.
Doherty stomped to the corner of the court and screamed at the officials as they left the floor.
Rashad McCants had 14 points for the Tar Heels (8-4), who have lost four of seven after a 5-0 start.
James Jones scored the first basket in the new arena and finished with 21 points for the Hurricanes (7-4), who rallied from a 58-48 deficit over the final seven minutes of regulation.
The game drew 6,826 fans in the new $48 million on-campus Convocation Center, which has 7,000 permanent seats. The Hurricanes averaged 4,651 fans last season at Miami Arena, their home in downtown Miami since 1988.
Rice, who had 17 points, scored on a follow to put the Hurricanes ahead 62-61 with 2:21 left in overtime - their first lead since 41-40 early in the second half. The Tar Heels had two possessions in the final minute but missed five shots.
Raymond Felton had 12 points and Jackie Manuel added 11 for the Tar Heels, who trailed 41-34 when their 18-point run began. McCants sparked the spurt with two baskets and two free throws.
Stymied by North Carolina's zone defense, the Hurricanes went 7½ minutes without a point and failed to score on 11 consecutive possessions. They committed four turnovers during the drought and missed nine consecutive shots, including a blown dunk by James, before he made a layup to make it 52-43 with 10:24 left.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Melvin Scott and David Noel put the Tar Heels ahead 58-47, but those were their last field goals.
A basket by James cut the deficit to 59-55 with 2:30 to go, and he made two free throws with 37 seconds left to make it 59-57. After Manuel hit one of two free throws with 24 seconds remaining, Rice's basket made the score 60-all.
The crowd included Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez, a Miami native, and Hurricanes football coach Larry Coker, whose team lost Friday night to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
"We didn't come home with what we hoped to come home with, and that's the national championship," Coker told the crowd when introduced at halftime. "Are we disappointed? Yes. Are we hurt? Yes. But let me assure you, it's not over for this university. We'll be back."

I think without a solid inside presence this will be the types of games UNC will continue to lose... I hate to say it but its true... this team has NO low post threat... and without that that can be hammered down low and played zone against on D as long as they miss their shots... they'll win some games win they are hot from outside, but games they go cold in shooting they'll lose... even to lower tallented teams... they need someone to a) be a defensive low post pressence (b) pickup offensive rebounds and (c) provide SOME kind of low post scoring threat... with a solid bigman this could make them a national championship contender
They played like I felt. I was in and out of the game, kind of like they were. They had every chance to win. For some reason, freshman never seem to get it that you have to play for 40 minutes. It's up to the coach to put that in their heads and he didn't do it. We still have the ability to put it on anyone at anytime, even without May. But they got to play the whole game.

I can't seem to understand why the heels miss so many open lay-ups , and put backs.
If you notice they dont protect the ball either on some of the lay-ups ( body between the ball and defender) .
They are young , i guess we better get used to not knowing whats gona happen next. ;)

It's not just them Coach, although they do seem to do that a lot. Today's players are simply athletes for the most part, fast runners and jumpers to the sky. Fundamentally, many of them are just above average. The ones to succeed are the ones that work to improve over their college days.
Look at the foreign players in college and the NBA, not flashy but they are workaholics.

I'm not surprised by this loss. As a matter of fact. I'll be surprised if they win 6 more games. They have no interior offense, and SEAN MAY is already sorely missed. UNC is another year, possibly two, from being a national contender. I do think that Sanders and Noel are developing at a nice pace and will be big time contributors sooner rather than later.
Byron Sanders is the biggest waste of space I have ever seen. He's like an untalented Ed Geth.

blueblood is right, the loss of May killed the Holes with nobody to go to inside. Too bad, cause I was looking forward to the Duke/UNC games this year. Now it'll just be another couple of blowouts unless May somehow returns before the 2nd game.
We played pretty good without him. We just got up on em and got complacent. Freshman tend to do that. If Mauel knocked down his ft's we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Even without May, Dook isn't good enough to blow the Heels out this year.

PR, I know I'm biased, and obviously you are too, but do your REALLY believe that dook will blow the Heels out? SERIOUSLY? I've seen dook play and they don't scare anybody. They can score but their freshmen have been way overrated with the exception of Redick. I stand by my statements about DUHON being a DOG.

Me biased Blue? Surely you jest!:p
Reddick has been a huge positive - don't know where the Devils would be without him. Dockery, as I've stated previously, scares me - with or without the ball.
Shav will improve - and he wouldn't have been overrated if he'd signed with the Heels, right?
I like Shelden Williams a great deal - he plays with a great deal of energy and crashes the boards.
In regard to the "holdovers" from last season:
Jones - scares me as well, but seems to be improving. He seems to have a higher opinion of his ability to shoot the 3 than I do;
Duhon - needs to continue to raise his game. Duke can win if he's not scoring or not shooting well - but he needs to set the tone on D, and distribute the ball;
Ewing - hopefully he can continue to shoot the rock and make big plays. He just seems more tentative.
Horvath - I had high hopes for him, but he and Casey Sanders have combined to form a dynamic "salt & pepper" combo...
Overall, Duke doesn't have the talent and experience of last season. I don't think Duke has the quality inside depth to handle injuries - but K proved me wrong when Boozer went down. I don't think this Duke team has the "killer" instinct yet either, on finishing games. But this is a very young team, and K will help them grow.
I think one of the Duke/Carolina games will be a blowout, in Duke's favor. Not sure which one yet. If Matt can get them focused, both games could be good. In retrospect, my support for Doherty may have been misplaced. Duke wouldn't have lost to Iona with K coaching, with Doh's talent on that team.
Duke doesn't scare anybody? I doubt K cares about "scaring" teams. And if they don't respect Duke, they will pay.
