Air Midwest Flight #5481 hits hanger; no survivors
Updated 9:30 AM
By Megan Butler, news14.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fire and police crews are responding to a fire at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Wednesday morning, where a small commuter aircraft hit a US Airways hanger.

The Air Midwest Flight #5481, heading to Greenville, S.C., lost control on take off and flipped into the hanger. Witnesses said the plane came down on its back as it was taking off, lost control and flipped into a hanger. Officials have not said if there were any injuries from people on the ground.

The aircraft was a Dash 8 aircraft, described as the most successful regional aircraft in the world.

MEDIC crews said that 19 people were on board the aircraft. Initial reports said there were as many as 40 people on board.

News 14 Carolina's Diana Rugg reported from Carolinas Medical Center, saying that CMC officials said an unofficial report they received from MEDIC said that there were no survivors found at the scene. CMC has not sent any helicopters or ambulances to the scene.

Hospital officials said helicopters were on standby at CMC in case any survivors were found. According to News 14 Carolina's Greg Pallone, a triage unit was being set up at the scene to deal with any possible injuries.

Smoke was visible from uptown Charlotte at the airport earlier Wednesday morning. At the scene, thick black smoke was seen billowing from the area. Smoke has since seemed to dissipate, indicating crews have controlled the fire.

Fire crews are continuing to work the scene. There appeared to be heavy smoke damage.

Pallone said the scene was very chaotic, and that a number of fire crews and emergency teams were on the way. He also said a number of MEDIC units were at the scene.

All flights have been delayed until the scene is contained. There was a tremendous amount of traffic in the area, preventing news crews from getting close to the scene.

A news conference has been scheduled for 10 a.m.

CNN:

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (CNN) -- A US Airways Express commuter plane with 19 people on board crashed on takeoff into a hangar Wednesday at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

Plumes of gray smoke could be seen rising from a hangar.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was Air Midwest Flight 5481 and was on its way to the Greenville-Spartanburg Jetport in South Carolina.

There was no immediate word on injuries or deaths.

The plane struck the side of the hangar.

A wall of the hangar was covered with black smoke.

The FAA said the aircraft is a Beech 1900, a turboprop aircraft. The airlines' Web site says it operates as US Airways Express.

The crash comes after a year in which there were no commercial airline fatalities in the United States, federal officials said. (Full story)

The airlines' hub is in Kansas City, Missouri. The plane's owner, Air Midwest, currently operates a fleet of 36 such aircraft, with 29 of them in service with the US Airways Express division, according to its Web site.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, Air Midwest also has hubs in Kansas City; Tampa, Florida; Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I flew into Detroit a few years back - late 80's when they had a huge airliner go down - killed a bunch of people. We had to circle a few times waiting to land and we could see the wreckage everytime we went around.

Only time I was ever scared on a plane was that day.

How about the 2-4 planes that were making their landing approach, surely a few passengers and pilots caught that out of the corner of their eye. Since the crashed plane was not scheduled for landing, as soon as it takes off, it can be a very brief minute before another one either takes off behind it or lands...

Probably not. They are contracted by US Airways for certain US Airways Express flights. I doubt passengers know since it has US Air has their paintjobs on the planes.

All the times I have flown those commuters, or even some small jets, they always come on and tell the passengers who the plane is operated by, (before take off) be it US Airways, or whoever. There are several small planes in US Airways fleet that are operated by other companies and have a US Airways paint job... my guess is USAir just pays to lease the plane with all the associate cost going to the company that operates the plane.

Depends on how they made their reservations. On the US Airways web site it is noted: This flight is a regional aircraft operated by US Airways Express carriers Allegheny, Air Midwest, Shuttle America, CCAIR, Chautauqua, Colgan, Mesa, Piedmont, PSA or Trans States.

I wonder what kind of maintenance record Air Midwest has with the FAA?
