View Full Version : Kannapolis Intimidators Tourney
I heard they were sponsering a big time tournament over Spring Break this year for some of the best teams the area has to offer. Anyone know much about this?

If you are talking about the high school tournament at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in April. It will be a eight team format. The teams I've been told will be mostly from Cabarrus county except Central Cabarrus. Here are a list of the teams..
1 Kannapolis
2 Northwest Cabarrus
3 Mount Pleasant
4 J.M. Robinson
5 Concord
6 West Stanly
7 Parkwood
8 And a team from West Virginia...
I don"t know why Central would not play except maybe they were scared!!!

Don't know much about the team from West Virginia. Parkwood I believe defeated East Rowan last year in the 3a playoffs... As for the others I've heard that Northwest and Mount Pleasant should have strong teams this year... K-town was hit hard by graduation last year....J M Robinson should be a year older and possibly improved....Concord and West Stanly who knows....I would have to say Northwest or Mount are the favorites at this time...Should be a great tournament at a beautiful facility....:feedback:

Naw, it's cool. The boy's determined though and the recipient has a facial expression of is he ever gonna stop.
I hadn't heard of this yet, but it should be a lot of fun for the kids.

I don't think its a matter of being scared. You have a chance in these tourneys to play teams that you rarely see (i.e. WV). Central may be going to see some of the 4A teams they may face later this year from other parts of the state.
From what i have heard:
The teams: Northwest, Kannapolis, Robinson, West Stanly, Parkwood, Mount Plesant, Concord, and a team from Virginia(state champions last year)
The games:
1.Northwest vs. West Stanly
2.Virginia vs. Parkwood
3.Kannapolis vs. Concord
4. Mount Plesant vs. Robinson
* Winner of NW, WS plays winner of VA, Parkwood
* Winner of Kannapolis, Concord plays winner fo MP, Robinson
** Winner of that game plays for the Championship
My prediction: Northwest vs Mount Plesant in the championship
It will be good to see how our county stacks up to Virginia's state champion.
I've heard recently that Robinson may be the best team in Cabarrus County this year. Is there any legit arguments to this? I know they have a few good players and a great coach, but I wasn't aware that they were this good yet.

Now that's a pretty big statement that someone has made with the likes of Mount Pleasant and Northwest having most of there players returning.I believe they both pounded Robinson last year. Also Central Cabarrus should get the knod over them.
I thought I would bump this for CharPirate

Robinson may not be the best in Cabarrus County but they will give any team a good run. They didn't get killed by Mount this year. It should have been a really close game. Josh Benton dove for a ball when the bases were loaded and caught it. It was a really good and saving catch. The NW vs Robinson game got rained out this year. The key players on the Robinson team are Jeff Schafer, Greg Miclatt, Andy Benson, and Nate Bargeloh. They play Piedmont Monday at the Kannapolis Intimaidators staidum. I can't wait till this tourney starts and we all get to see these great teams play each other.

Hey, thanks Braves. I guess thats why I should check the archives BEFORE I post next time. Great board though. Wish I would have knew of it sooner.
As far as the tourney goes, I'm not sure that the VA team is still playing. Only thing I'm sure of is Mount and Concord tomorrow. UNLESS, the VA team not playing has changed the match-ups. I can't find anything about the tourney mentioned anywhere other than this board. If i stumble upon more I'll let you guys know.

according to one listing , games are 10,1,4,7
in order:
NWC vs West Stanley
Robinson vs Piedmont
Mount Pleasant vs Concord
Kannapolis vs Parkwood
now in another section of the paper it reads :
MP , AL Brown, Concord , NWC , West Stanley , and Parkwood , a Virginia team withdrew . next paragraph says , Piedmont will play the first day of the tournament . Statesville will take Piedmonts place in the second round and the MP jr. varsity team will fill in for Statesville the third day.
So if Piedmont and Statesville win their games the MP jv's could play in the Championship game .
Figure this one out...
sounds like just a bunch of teams playing baseball instead of a real tournament.
Just wanted to add my .02 about someone's earlier comment on JMRobinson being so good,,,,, sorry pal but JMR looks to be one of the weakest 2 teams in the county (w/Concord) this spring. Just a fact.
And yes, apparently this Virginia team withdrawing at the last minute has really caused some "scrambling" by tournament officials, and created an unusual situation. Piedmont and Statesville both have agreed to play one game each, but neither will finish the tournament. Basically, these teams are just rounding out the tournament field to give us 8 slots.
The tournament champion will undoubtedly come down to Northwest Cabarrus or Mt.Pleasant,,,, with Kannapolis as a darkhorse. Any takers for a friendly wager?

SURPRISE!!!!
Concord - 2
Mt. Pleasant - 1
The Spider team has made great strides this year and hopefully this win will keep the positive momentum going for an improving program. Spider ace Tripper Newsome pitched a complete game, scattering 5 hits, 1 earned run, and he struck out 6 while walking 2. Concord scored two runs in the fourth and Mt. Pleasant scored one in fifth.
Concord will face the winner of the Kannapolis - Parkwood game at 7:00 pm tomorrow.

SPCfan0, I never said that JMRobinson wasn't any good,,,,, go back and read my comments. I said that they were simply "one of the weakest 2 teams in the county this year". Sorry, but thats my opinion, based on what I've seen on the field this season, and I've seen all 6 county teams at least twice each. I think Concord beating Mt.Pleasant yesterday was a MAJOR upset, and I also believe "if" JMRobinson beats Northwest today--- that would be a MAJOR upset too.
I believe I made my initial comments because "someone" was trying to say (earlier in the year) that JMRobinson was one of the best teams in Cabarrus County, and I just don't believe this is true. I would rank the county teams in this order so far: 1- Northwest Cabarrus
2- Kannapolis/Mt.Pleasant
3- Central Cabarrus
4- JMRobinson/Concord
*** Even though Central is leading their 4A conference, they have lost to Northwest and Kannapolis, and I believe Josh Benton (MP) would beat them too.
Btw, Congratulations to JMRobinson and Concord for posting big wins in the Easter Tournament yesterday, but I'll stick with my opinion.
I'd like to say one more thing about Piedmont being ranked #9 (or whatever) in the state.
OVER-RATED!!!!!!
I don't know how many losses Piedmont has, but I saw JMRobinson beat Piedmont's ace (M.Foard) yesterday, I know Kannapolis beat Piedmont in a nonconference game last week, and now folks are saying that Piedmont has lost several other games too.
The polls are a "JOKE" if they don't have West Rowan included (and they don't), so don't put much stock in the polls. West Rowan is CLEARLY a much better team than Piedmont...
Spiderman, just wanted to let you know that it was Brett Bartles who hit the "bomb" for Kannapolis last night. You gave credit to Petty, but our Mr.Petty only had "warning track power" last night, getting a key double and a triple.
Petty currently has 6 HR's for the year, while Bartles now has 5. Just wanted to give BB his due credit...
The Wonders now have 16 total homeruns as a team...
SpiderMan

Here is my two cents on Piedmont:
Piedmont went undefeated last year but got upset in the first round of the playoffs. Last year Piedmont hit the ball hard and they had their ace Matt Foard and star catcher Dan Brooks.
This year they brought back MOST of their players and added the likes of other Union County aces in Josh Bartlett of Sun Valley and Jeremy Helms of Parkwood.
With what Piedmont brought back and with all they added they SHOULD be one of the best teams in the state on talent. But, baseball is a funny game and obviously something isn't going right in Unionville, and if you ask me, it couldn't please me enough to see them struggle.
They are now second in the SPC behind Weddington and they are not one of the best teams in the state.
Spiderman, we agree on Piedmont. In baseball, you can have all the talent in the world, but chemistry is SOOOOO important. You may know the Piedmont boys better, so YOU can give them credit. I've only seen them a couple times, and (to me) they simply are NOT in the West Rowan/Northwest Cabarrus category. Piedmont is a good team, plain and simple. But they are not one of the BEST teams around... ...for whatever reason...
Hats off to Concord. They knew they had to play the game of their life and they did. They took advantage of two Mount errors and capitalized on them. Congratulations!!

Josh Benton threw a 2 hitter and the Tigers played some great defense around him. The win puts Mount into the 5th/6th place game tomorrow at 4:00 pm at FCS. They will play the winner of the Statesville/Parkwood game which takes place at Brown High School. Tomorrow in place of Statesville will be the Mt. Pleasant JV team. So you might see the Mount Varsity play the Mount JV.
Schedule for tonight:
Robinson vs. NWC 4:00 pm
Concord vs. Kannapolis 7:00 pm
The winners of each of the games tonight will play at 7:00 pm tomorrow in the 1st/2nd place game, with the losers of each of the games will play at 1:00 pm tomorrow in the 3rd/4th place game.

Congratulations to the Wonders tonight, they played a good game and it was a well coached game on both teams part. Kannapolis used their hitting to their advantage and picked up 2 runs in the first, 1 in the third, 2 in the fifth, and 2 runs in the sixth. While scoring in 4 of the innings tonight, the Wonders only left 3 runners on base the whole night.
Brett Bartles pitched for Kannapolis and went the distance allowing 1 ER, 3 hits, while striking out 5 and only walking 2.
For Concord, Andrew Ward pitched a decent game going 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 6 runs, and he struck out 8 while walking 4.
The game was fairly competive but Kannapolis simply hit the ball harder and hit them more with the Wonders outhitting the Spiders 6 to 3. The Spiders had some key errors that also prolonged some innings. But in the end the better team won.
Empsy Thompson called a good game and used his big hitters to bring the runners home. Bartles had 2 RBI, Smith was 2-2, 2 R, 3B.
For Concord Tripper Newsome was 1-3, RBI, Hunter Wyke 1-3, Dale Ambrosini 1-2, Andrew Ward 0-2, R.
Good Luck to Kannapolis tomorrow, I'm sure some of you NPC people expected the score to be more lopsided especially after the Northwest-Robinson game being 9-2 in favor of Northwest.

Int.Coach, if Statesville beat Parkwood today, then the NPC went 3-0 against the SPC today alone...
...in fact, the NPC was 4-0 over the SPC if you count Kannapolis beating Parkwood last night...
...I don't want to sound like a smarta$$, but the NPC's dominance over the SPC really isn't surprising...
SpiderMan

I don't find the dominance surprising either.
Concord has one pitcher that can go out there and completely shut a team down, and that pitcher is Tripper Newsome. Remember Concord is the 7th place (last place) team in the SPC. They defeated the 1st place team in the Rocky River with the credit going to Tripper Newsome.
In tonights game it was the 3rd place team in the NPC, Kannapolis, against the 7th place team in the SPC, Concord, with their ace already pitched the day before.
Coming into this tournament Concord didn't attempt to save their aces for the final game. Concord came into the game trying to win games. They beat Mt. Pleasant with their ace and they accomplished one of their goals.
In the other semi-final, Northwest, 1st place team in the NPC played the 4th place team in the SPC, Robinson.
I don't dismiss the fact that the NPC is superior to the SPC but to use this tournament to judge the two conferences is very premature.
Today you had a 1st place NPC v. 4th SPC.
In the other game it was 3rd NPC v. 7th SPC.
I also believe that most Kannapolis fans should be happy that a so called sorry conference SPC team beat the #1 team in the Rocky River in Mt. Pleasant.
This is not the tournament to judge the two conferences.

Since my post earlier, I have heard from someone "in the know", and Mounts V and JV will indeed square off against one another tomorrow. I would have thought they might switch the 5/6 and 7/8 game to change that, but I guess not. In this case, do I pull for the V or JV? Oh well, I've got a winner either way. HA
I'm not sure what either NW or Kann has to throw out on the mound tomorrow, but from what I've seen so far this week, it looks to be a good game. Definitely the 2 teams playing the best ball, especially hitting, in the tourney are playing for the Championship tomorrow. Should be good.

04-23-03, 03:55 AM
I'm not sure who Kannapolis will throw tonight .
One kid doesnt like to start , one kid would rather not pitch against NWC , that leaves Petty , Sherrill and Carithers.
Thats just rumor by the way.
There are alot of scenarios if you pitch those 3 . Petty being the hardest thrower, Sherrill has sidearm with a lot of movement, Carithers is effective if the ball stays down and the defense shows up.
This may sound bias , but i would start Carithers and go as long as possible, then Petty , and if needed Sherrill just to keep NWC off balance.
Bowers is another one to throw , but seems to get roughed up early and against NWC you dont want that to happen.
I feel if Petty isnt sore and can get 3 to 4 innings thats who they will start then you got off speed left to relieve and bowers the lefty.

No, I am not suggesting that.
Mt. Pleasant is far, far, better than Concord pitching and hitting and in every aspect of the game.
Our ace threw a game that he is capable of and Concord ended up winning 2-1. If people want to call it luck then that is fine with me.
And by no means was I trying to downplay you guys or what you did. You won and congratulations to you. I just don't think you can assume anything about these conferences by looking at one game. If you want to do that, then go back and look at what Mount did to NWC earlier this year. Good luck to all today, this tourney has been an absolute blast and I hope it becomes an annual event.

Concord continued playing good baseball in a victory over rival Robinson. Concord was down 5-1 going into the bottom of the 4th, but scored two runs in each of the final three innings to knock off the Bulldogs.
Both starters Brett Clay of Robinson and Chad Dempsey of Concord struggled finding the plate with each walking 5 batters. (The small strike zone of the umpire didn't help matters either.)
Concord collected 10 hits, while Robinson got 8. Concord committed 4 errors, while Robinson committed 1.

Dalton started the game but left in the 4th or 5th due to being a little sick. Goodman came in and closed out the game.
This one was a good one. Kannapolis had 6 hits and left something like 8 runners on base in scoring position.
NWC had 2 hits , Garrett Sherrill pitched a complete game.
I wont even go into the TERRIBLE call made by the base umpire on a call at first that would have had us with bases loaded with One out and Daniel Smith up.
Congratulations to NWC on winning this tournament and congratulations to Nolan Patterson on being selected as the Tournament MVP . There was none better this tournament to get that award, and thats one of the best workers you will ever get to play for you. I am sure Coach Hubbard would like a whole team of Pattersons.

That was one heckuva game tonight. I think that was 3 hits actually for NWC there Coach. None the less, Sherrill pitched a great game.
I can't argue the bad call, he sure looked safe to me and I was sitting right on 1st in the stands (and thats an unbiased opinion there). If these 2 go again, I know I'll have to make it out. Just a shame my Tigers couldn't take care of business and have been out there. Like I said in an earlier post though, the TWO BEST THIS WEEK were definitely in that game.

Intimidator, I'm not sure the bad call at 1st base would've made any difference, but I know what you're saying. In big games, you NEVER want the umpires to "figure in" in any manner, and Kannapolis certainly had a "threat" going at the time of this bad call.
