View Full Version : Your First Car?

What was your first car?

I basically had three in my first two years of driving...

1. '76 Camaro LT - 305 5 speed. It was my stepdad's but I drove it most of the time. Cost $0, wasn't really mine.

2. My Senior year Homecoming gift from my dad was a '72 Ford Grand Torino 351 Windsor with Ram induction, Thrush glass packs...mean looking/sounding SOB, but it was in the shop three days a week. $500, it was easily worth twice that much, no rust, but the interior was a little f'd up.

3. Took my graduation money and bought me a '78 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. 350 with the delux pillow seats...fully loaded and I only paid $2000 for it. I often slept in that car in the parking lot at work/college.

1978 Pontiac LeMans. Shit brown inside and out. Sold it for $30 bucks to a guy who wanted the frame to use as his racecar on the dirt tracks. Hated that car. Never could get the heat to switch off.

1974 El Camino - piece of junk when I bought it, but pretty decent a few years later when I was finished working on it--bright white, tinted windows, lowered, centerline rims, low profile TAs, louvered hood, holly double pumper. The best part was the hidden built in ice chest under the bed. I was the only guy on campus who always had cold beer.

My best friend in high school first car was a 1970 Chevelle SS 396. That car was awesome, still my favorite classic. I had a 67 Camaro SS 396 about 5 years ago. Too expensive to maintain, always broke something when I took it out to play but a FUN car.

An '82 Honda Civic Hatchback. Burgundy Red. Got it in "84 and it only had 6000 miles on it. Loved that little car. Totally rolled it 3 times coming around the curve in front of Camp Rockbrook going up Greenville Hiway, at about 1 am, heading up to drink and smoke out near Caesar's Head. Funny, at the time, we were listening to "Happy Death Man" by Echo and the Bunnymen.
Pulled the car out of the ditch and drove it back home into the garage. Damn, my folks were pissed.

'76 Granada. I got it in Jan 85. It had been sitting under the carport of some little old lady for a few years - 14K miles. I drove the living shit out it. Man I LOVED that car. Yeah I know this is a Granada we're talking about, but it was light so it wasn't that slow and you could pile a boatload of teenagers in it. I wrecked it several times....I have no idea how that car was not the death of me.

I followed that up with a 1978 Trans Am, which I still own and love dearly.

1991 Mustang 5.0 slowest "sports" car I ever owned :)

1997 Ford Explorer sold back to mom shortly after purchasing from my mom.

Now Mail cars :)

1978 Ford Fairmont that my g/f wrecked which brought on a 1977 AMG Jeep Mail Truck that I wore completely out. On to the next one a 1984 Buick Regal that I paid 800 bucks for and drove for 3 years on the route until I wrecked it... good car. Then on to a 1989 Buick LeSabre that was by far the best mail car ever, 140k miles just carrying mail and 4 1/2 yrs of loyal duty.
Now to the current mail car 1996 Buick Regal.

I know I went way off topic of your first car but who cares? :)

1974 Oldsmobile delta 88 with a 350 rocket silver. The day I got my license, I took it out with a few of my friends (I was the first in our group to be mobile). I was in 3 high speed chases., my friends had thrown eggs at vehicles coming the other way, one was and under cover cop.

We were lucky and didn't get caught.

Well, I started out driving a red Chevrolet Impala. All my friends called it "The Tank". I remember one day I was at the wheel and one of my friends was way over on the other side in the passenger seat...I lost control of the car and managed to do a 180. Once we came to a stop in the ditch...we just looked at each other and laughed our asses off. She had slid all the way from the passenger side and ended up sitting beside me. We were fine and the car was fine. We just drove out of the ditch like nothing had happened.

My second vehicle was a Hyundai. I was greatful for any type of small car.

My official first car...was a Strawberry Red Ford Escort. I loved that car. It was perfect for traveling. I totalled it a couple years ago.

Now, I am driving a '91 Honda Civic. Honda Rocks!!!

Only one Gremlin, and af course it would have to be Fred! LOL! One thing about Gremlins, there heavy as hell for a little car! A girl I went to school with left hers brokedown in "my parking spot" so four of us decided to move it...ended up pushing it with the car. The driver went to jail for 5th degree criminal mischief, but the County Sherriff let the rest of us go.

I had probably about 8-10 cars in my first 5-6 or so years driving. I went through the clunkers pretty fast - I think I tend to get bored with cars real easily. But my first one, that I had for a year, was a '74 Datsun 260Z. Loved Z cars. My dad kept the 260 and painted it for himself, he liked it so much. I also had a 280Z and a 280ZX, a 1980 Mustang Cobra (we put a 351W in it  ), a '77 MGB, a couple of Celicas.....but I wasn't that spoiled - none of these cars ever cost more than say $1200 or so. I think I lament the Zs and the MGB the most.....probably the B more cause I loved having the top down.

Bear, I've always wanted a 944. I drove for 12 years before I finally got a Porsche. And now I hardly ever drive it :(

1972 El Camino. My dad bought it from some old man in 1977. He drove it until 1987 and parked it for a year. Started teaching me how to maintain it when I was 14, and got my license in it.

It had a 350 with a Q-jet and dual exhaust with blown out Glass Packs. Sucker was loud and it sounded pretty tough. Lemon yellow with a black vinyl top and an early snug top camper shell. It still had the original rallye wheels with polished stainless beauty rings. Cooper white letter meats in the back with F-70's in front. All black vinyl interior. Bench seat with a column shifter, which wasn't cool until I started dating and discovered that girls like to sit in the middle. :D

When the motor went south on it, I dropped a 300 hp. 350 in it with an aluminum intake, K&N, and MSD ignition. Swapped the Glasspacks for 3-chamber Flowmasters and put 245x60 BFG's all the way around.

I stripped the vinyl top and painted the roof black. I painted the rest of the truck Corvette yellow with black SS stripes on the hood. Lost the camper shell and got a black vinyl tonneau cover for the bed.

It would only run on Super Unleaded, and got about 6 mpg. It ran REAL good on 110 octane aviation gas! I beat every 5.0 Mustang I ever raced, which admittedly wasn't many. I had to whip that truck to death to do it, but it would do it. It would bark 3rd gear at 75 mph. On two separate occasions it did burnouts of over 100 ft.

And it was California smog legal. Really.

It was my baby and I loved it dearly. I never found out how fast it would go because the front end started floating at 105 mph. But I got married, and when the first big gas crunch hit in '98 I had to sell it. 6 mpg and almost $2 per gallon do not work very well. Dad paid $2,500 for it in '77. I sold it for $3,500 in '98, and Dad and I put about 200,000 miles on it.

Which less than one year of ownership a guy in a mustang slamed into me and totaled her.

My first car was an aqua coloured Ford Escort - 1970...very old - but nicely peppy.

Second car was a Blue Toyota Starlet - 1980...with amazing fold down seats *cough* Loved that car!!!

Then I traded it in for a Mercedes Benz...with hand fitted sheep skin seat covers...Man - I was one cool chickie in that car!

I can't believe that a few of you owned my dream car - a Mustang! Love those cars! :)

Honeygirl, I loved driving that car. It was a 3 speed. That baby had so much power. Sometimes when you would shift down and floor it you could feel it squat and take off like lightning.

A 1983 Honda Accord hatchback. Not the most thrilling vehicle, but damn if it wasn't the most reliable thing. The only major thing I replaced on it for 200K miles was a clutch. I flipped it on Monroe road in 1992 and after they pulled it out of the woods and put it right side up on the side of the road, it started right up and they drove it onto a flatbed.

I had to rekindle this thread.

First car was a 1966 Chevelle Malibu 2Dr Hard Top, with a stock 327 / 275hp, power glide, bench seat, 10 bolt posi, drum brakes.

Nothing fancy, but I'm 22 yrs old. It survived high school, countless girlfriends in the back seat, and a little old ladie in a lincoln in the partking lot. I still own the car, drove it daily for 6 years, and am right now, fixing minor things, dents, rust, and am putting a fresh coat of PPG Centari Black paint on it and have done the following upgrades:

454ci Engine doing 525 HP
TH400 Auto Matic
12 Botl Posi
Power Disc brakes
Bucket seats
Center conosle
Gauges (original factory)
American Racing 200S "Daisy" wheels. (Commonly known as Coke Bottles)
More enchancements to come, but that's good for now.

My daily drive is a 2001 Chevy S10 Extreme LS Ext Cab 4.3L Auto.

Dad's garage contains a 66 Chevelle 2Dr HT, with a 427, 4spd. & a 1955 Chev 2nd Series Truck, with a big back window, 350, IFS, Power Rack & Pinon, and a HOST of serious fabricated goodes on that beast. All wrapped in flames, outlined in true 24kt gold. NICE.

Love to hear all the classics, that's great.

Some gal ran a stop light and I nailed her in the drivers side door. It totaled her car and I drove "The Missle" home. After recieving a check from her insurance co. I decided to forgo repairs. I took a hacksaw to the grille, adjusted the headlights and blew the money on stuff. I sold it before I joined the Marines in '78.
