Lieberman to Run for President in 2004
By Diane Scarponi, Associated Press Writer

STAMFORD, CT - Sen. Joseph Lieberman, freed of his self-imposed pledge to defer to Al Gore, announced Monday he is running for president in 2004, saying the nation needs leaders "ready to lead."

"Two years ago, we were promised a better America, but that promise has not been kept," the senator, the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2000, told students at his old high school.

He said the nation can "renew the American dream. ... if our leaders are ready to lead, willing to fight for what's right for the American people and able to rise above partisan politics to put our country first."

"I am a candidate for president of the United States and I intend to win," he said.

Lieberman told the crowd at Stamford High — where he graduated in 1960 — that he intends "to talk straight to the American people and to show them that I am a different kind of Democrat."

"I will not hesitate to tell my friends when they are wrong and to agree with my opponents when they are right."

Lieberman had stressed since 2000 that if Gore ran again, he would not. Then Gore announced in December that he would not run. The next day, Lieberman thanked the former vice president for his leadership and said he would take the next several weeks to "very seriously consider the awesome opportunity that I now have."

He joins a crowded field. Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and North Carolina Sen. John Edwards are running.
Among the others considering a bid are Connecticut's senior senator, Christopher Dodd; Sens. Bob Graham of Florida and Joseph Biden of Delaware; former Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado; and the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist.

Asked about Lieberman's comments, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said: "There are many things many Democrats are going to say in order to stand out in the Democratic primary. The president looks forward to welcoming whoever wants to run."

The first Jew on a major-party presidential ticket, Lieberman was known, but not well-known, before Gore picked him to be his running mate in 2000.

Lieberman, a centrist, had long campaigned against violent images in the media and was a strong supporter of the Gulf War. He also drew national attention when he criticized President Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky from the Senate floor.

As the vice presidential candidate, Lieberman introduced America to the habits of an Orthodox Jew. He refused to campaign on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath, although he would work or cast votes if necessary.

Lieberman said he would not favor Israel over the United States. He also earned the respect of Christian activists, embracing issues such as family, morality and reverence.

As Gore's running mate, Lieberman drew criticism from Republicans who accused him of softening or abandoning his positions on issues such as school vouchers and affirmative action to shore up Democratic support. Lieberman denied changing his positions.

As soon as the 2000 race was over, Lieberman was considered a prospect for 2004, and he traveled from New Hampshire to California through his Responsibility Opportunity and Community PAC.

That guy is a cold fish with no original ideas. He is a talking head Democrat. He will be one of the first to drop out, probably before Edwards.

Plus wasn't it Medusa that was so ugly that people would turn to stone just from looking at her? If I have to look at Lieberman for more than 5 minutes I'm a statue. Ugh.

Yet another thread where no one can offer up a viable Democratic candidate. (Hint: one does not exist).

Lieberman looks like what Kevin Spacey will look like in 25 years.

Not that I would ever vote for him, but MA Senator John Kerry would be the most logical choice for the Democrats.

Must be why no name has been brought up.

Not a chance in hell. When it gets right down to it, I really don't think folks are too keen on the idea of having a Jewish president. It's just a matter of connecting with the guy. I don't think enough people will believe he represents them.

It's really funny how some people (Dems) always play some kinda race, gender,or religious card when it comes to someone NOT being a 'popular' choice, who plays for YOUR team.
It has NOTHING to do with Joe's religion.
Does it occur to some that maybe MOST people actually DON"T agree with most liberal ideas? Most working people anyways.
It's because he's liberal, And a whinner. He's not a winner, and that's why a lot don't like him, even Dems.

I do like JL, because he's a conservative Democrat, a stand up guy, and (with the exception when he was running for VP), stands up for his principles- and debates intelligently without playing cards and name calling to quash the opposition.
I wouldn't vote for him as president, tho, because he just isn't quite conservative enough, and lacks the type of strength we need as president right now with foreign affairs.

I'm ashamed of NC for electing J.Edwards in the first place. I definitely wouldn't vote for him for president. I'm just not 'regular' enought for him.

Do you really think a black guy or an asian guy could win? If GW was hispanic, would he have won?

Admittedly, no, but he wouldn't have been elected he if were an Injun, neither. And anyway, we were talking about religion, not race, which is overlooked more often than race.
W wasn't elected because he was a Christian.

You mentioned the "race card" like I was trying to make some sort of excuse. I don't really like Leiberman so I'm not gonna be pulling for him. So it's not an excuse, it's just the way it is.

I think Gore lost the race when he picked Leiberman as a running mate, personally.

You say religion is overlooked, but the only non-protestant president since the civil war was JFK. Besides him, Jefferson, Andrew Johnson, and Lincoln (who are all listed as "non religious") it's been nothing but WASPS in office. I think it's simply a matter of relating to the people you're supposed to represent.

You think people aren't gonna think it's a little weird when Joe doesn't work past sundown on Fridays thru sundown on Saturdays? Or that his kitchen has 2 working sections, one for meats and one for diary and they can't comingle. It's unimportant stuff, but it's stuff that people just won't indentify with. For that matter, a good number of Americans probably think ol Joe is going to Hell when he dies. I realize that's probably a small number who'd say it aloud, but probably a bunch more that would have to come to that conclusion if pressed on the issue.

Nope. Gore lost because he is, well...Algore. That , and the fact the dumbasses in Florida don't seem to know how to vote, but then again, I don't like the idea of anybody so much of an idiot, and can't follow simple directions, and punch a damn hole in a ballot, to be chosing my president.

No, I really don't give a damn what day the Us President takes off during the week, or what his kitchen accomodations are, or what the hell he eats. I don't care what God he worships, as long as he's not part of a cult, or so fanatical, he's impractical. All I give a shit about is the Pres. cutting my taxes, eliminate stupid unessessary Fed. spending, actually spend my money on stuff this country actually needs, help people who actually need helping (ie. disabled people, etc.), and protecting my children as best as possible from getting attacked by outside forces, period.
