What are the best in your area?

Crest vs Shelby is one of the best around here.

Concord-Kannapolis, annual battle for the bell, before the screwed up conference alignments this also usually said a lot about who would be conference champs.

Never understood the reasoning for not having K-Town and Concord in the same con. I guess the same reasoning that goes into split playoffs.

i know there are some good ones in north carolina but the best rivalry in sc is rock hill vs northwestern do doubt about it. usually, both teams are in the sc top 10 and they share district 3 stadium which is where the shrine bowl was held. when they play it is standing room only in there and both schools hate each other as bad as any rivals could. it's a college atmosphere when they play each other.

in nc i would like to see the shelby-crest game. i've heard it was pretty bitter and i would also like to get up there and catch concord-kanap game.

btw crest fans, thanks for travis lee. i saw him in the shrine bowl he should be a good one at usc baby!

smashmouth5
02-10-03, 01:23 PM
Just wished they had thrown to Travis a few more times in the Shrine Bowl. Pretty good job for a WR who had to play QB all year. He's just a great athlete. Keep an eye out for another Crest product at USC. Josh Malloy was redshirted last year, but when he first got to campus he was already 2nd strongest on the team. Coach Holtz has had great things to say about him on his visits to Crest. He expects him to see some playing time on the O-line this year. As fas as SC goes, the Dorman/Spartanburg game is pretty big too.

USC-IPTF

ya, one of travis' td's was against rock hill cornerback jonathon hemby who is headed to tennesse. hopefully the result will be similar when they meet in the sec later in their careers.

as for malloy, i remember when they signed him. i believe he had a ligament injury or something and was forced to redshirt last year but yeah he will be a force on the o-line. he was part of a very impressive o-line class that year along w/stephen sene and jabari levey, two sc products who are both 6'6"ish and +300 lbs. usc's offensive line should be very very good for the next several years. i think malloy will be a guard and if he's as good as i've heard he will be playing this year for sure. he is HUGE.

The freedom east burke game is called fat friday. it is a great high school rival game. both teams attend a banquet befor the game where they have had many great speakers. fat friday is not only the biggest sporting event in the county but the biggest event of any kind. the game as grown into more than a athletic contest. it is a time when all of burke county comes together. during an elction year it looks like a polictical rally. the rivalry is good natured but intense. however, freedom has won six times in a row which is a record and that has changed the rivalry a little. the game also collects thousands of cans of food for the food bank here. just about every fan brings a one can of food to the game. in short this rivalry is special and hopfully can continue to be

I have to give the award to Fat Friday. It's unique. Sorry BigRed, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Cavs win one...just to put some extra "zing" into the series. Freedom has dominated lately. Of course, since we have our own little rivalry with EB, I understand the need to keep 'em down! lol

Better chance of Crest ending up back in the NW4A, but I wouldn't mind seeing Hickory come with them.

Garnet_and_Gold

Yup, I'd love to see Crest and Hickory both return to NW4A. Some of my fellow Tornado people would disagree, but I personally believe that the NW4A is the most appropriate place for Hickory to be. Crest, too. I can't stand being associated with the likes of St. Stephens, Fred T. Foard and R-S Central. I have great respect for Burns and Kings Mountain, but those other three schools are nothing but pathetic - at least in football, which is what we're talking about here.

I think that when realignment happens, T.C. Roberson will move up to 4A, which will most likely cause the powers that be to move A.C. Reynolds back into the MAC and have that conf. be a 4A/3A conference like it used to be. Then Crest will return to the NW4A and it will look exactly the way it did for most of the '90s. There's a remote chance that Hickory's enrollment will push it back into 4A, but I doubt it. For that to happen, Hickory would have to see its ADM increase by at least another 150-200 students...and several current 4A schools would have to see a drop in enrollment. I can think of at least one 4A school that is dropping down immediately - South Iredell - but I'm not completely sure how many others will. Plus, there are already several 3A schools that are bigger than Hickory which will probably move up - Crest, Roberson, Ashbrook, East Gaston, East Rowan, Jay Robinson, Dudley, etc.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Big South Conference in realignment. Ashbrook and East Gaston will definitely move up to 4A. East Lincoln will definitely move down to 2A. That leaves Hunter Huss, South Point, North Gaston and Forestview. Obviously, that group needs to be kept together, but will the NCHSAA move other teams (Kings Mountain? Burns?) into the conference to build it back up? Or will they move the group into another conference? When Crest moves back to 4A, will the NCHSAA just leave the SWFoothills Conf. the way it is, just with one less member? Or will they move somebody in to take Crest's place. If Hickory has to stay in the conference that it's currently in, I'de like to see Crest replaced by Shelby. But there would have to be a very significant shift in enrollment for Shelby to get back into 3A - probably at Crest's expence - which would keep Crest in 3A!

In the end, though, I've got a feeling that teams are going to wind up in conferences that look very much like they did prior to 2001. I just wish that Hickory, SSHS and Foard were not a packaged set... The rest of Catawba county hates on Hickory repeatedly...they never wanted to be in a conference with the Red Tornadoes anyway and I'd just as soon pretend that none of them exist! :bird6: :bird6: :bird6:

FAT FRIDAY!!!! There is nothing that compares to it. I have had the privilage of playing in it for the past two years. That is the most exciting game I have ever been a part of. That was the most excited I have ever been. I had a little extra to play for considering I was playing my cousin. The Richmond/Scotland is the best in the state. The WC/Richmond games were intense. The Indy/Richmond rival is brewing but Indy wont play Richmond during the regular season.Knotts finds all kinds of excuses.I also think the Crest/Richmond games were good games. After the double overtime loss to Richmond,Crest QUIT playing Richmond. They instead get more pumped up playing Anson County.

Crest/UNC/Panthers,

Thank you, {aka Crest 1983}.

I decided to check on the boards a few weeks ago just to see what's going on, if anything. I usually post on Charlotte.com, and I was surprised to see what they have done with it. I don't know how much activity the site will generate this season under the new format. I decided I needed to find some other sites sites and register for the upcoming season, so I ventured over here. I also post on NCHSFootball.com.

Looking forward to the season. I wish you and the Chargers the best.

First off, I would say that Fat Friday is one of the best football rivalries in the state, and the fact that is goes well beyond the game of football makes it that much better.

Now, on to the subject of realignment:

As Garnet and Gold stated, TC Roberson will be a big enough school to be in 4A along with Crest. BUT, from some credable sources, the NCHSAA will only bring back the MAC 3A/4A split if there are 3 or more 4A schools in the split conference, and I don't see that happening.

Here's a couple options that I would propose.

1. Bring in both Crest and Roberson to the NW4A, and shift Alex. Central to the Central Piedmont 4A.

2. Bring Roberson only to the NW4A. Send Crest and potentially Ashbrook and East Gaston and make another 4A conference with the Mecklenburg County Schools.

The rivalry is Crest-Shelby. Its pretty impressive when a school can come in and become Shelby's archrival like Crest has done, with all the other teams that Shelby has been playing for much longer.

I'd love to see Crest back in the NW4A. Move AC Reynolds to that 4A/3A conference. Some good rivalries were being formed in the NW4A like Crest-Freedom and Crest-McDowell. Plus it just feels good to see your school compete in the highest division.

I think Shelby asked to be put in 3A during the last realignment. Maybe if Crest were to move up the NCHSAA could approve letting Shelby take their place.

Garnet_and_Gold
05-01-03, 10:54 PM
Oh, man! I would LOVE for Shelby to jump up to 3A and take
Crest's place. If it were up to me, I'd keep Crest on the
schedule as non-conf. opponent when they return to 4A, but
I've got a bad feeling that it won't happen. But it would be
great to have the Golden Lions back on our schedule!
:jump:

Now, if we could only replace R-S Central with East Rutherford...

i wish the nw4a looked like this

ac reynolds
crest
freedom
hickory
east burke
mcdowell
tc roberson
watauaga

maybe south caldwell can go back to 3a.
People then couldnt talk about how weak the nw4a is and itr would help in other sports as well.

i doubt that hickory would become 4a agian so then i guess just bring in crest and tc roberson and keep ac reynolds, move alexander to another conference and hopefully south caldwell will become a 3a school agian.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Chargers in NW4A that looks like that.

crestuden
05-02-03, 04:16 PM
That would be a great all around sports conference. With Reynolds, Crest, Freedom, and Hickory proving that the NW4A isn't a pushover in football and the continued success of those NW4A schools in basketball, baseball, and basically every other sport they dominate. That would be a crazy strong conference.

Garnet_and_Gold
05-02-03, 09:59 PM
Oh, hell yeah!! That would be a dream come true for me.
I sure do miss the good ol' Northwestern 4A! Unfortunately, I have to agree that Hickory is not likely to have the necessary enrollment to qualify for 4A, but it sure would be nice.

yeah the unifour area combine...if you've ever heard of the NFL combine you would know what it is...so i will assume that you know what that is...it is the same thing as the nfl combine but consists of teams in the hickory area...like Alexander, south caldwell, newton conover, maiden, etc. and if you dont know what a combine is then it's pretty much just an athletic competition where you take the top athletes in your school and go and compete with other schools in your area...it was held at south caldwell h.s. and some of the events were things like 40 yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, bench press, plyo boxes, 300 yard shuttle run(the hardest event there), and things like that. it took about 3 hours to complete and the results were as follows: top male:Daniel Walker(Alexander Central) Top Female: some girl from Newton Conover Top female team:newton-conover top male team:alexander top team overall:Alexander central

i hope that kinda gives you a better idea about what it was

Not on the scale of some of the bigger schools' rivalries, but the big rivalry in Union County for over 40 years has been the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets and the Monroe Rebels (or whatever their new politically correct mascot is).

They're really the only 2 schools in the county that have consistently had strong football programs over the years.

The 1A schools provide just as good a rivalry as the big school provide.

Reynolds vs Asheville or Asheville vs TC Roberson are usually big games for the bragging rights in Buncombe County.

I couldve sworn this post said best rivals not conference realignment....maybe I need to check my eyes again. Who cares what happens when realignment happens next year - we have the 2003 season to worry about. While everyone is worried about moving Crest and Hickory out of the best conference in western North Carolina, Southwestern Foothills, I think both teams should look at their schedule...Hickory needs to watch Sept 19th and Oct 17..the teams are referred to around here as...Crest and Burns....Crest you need to pay attention to the Dawg House in Lawndale because just like last year - the Dawgs are out to bite! So before we move this team there and that team there lets keep our eyes focused on the 2003 season and worry about realignment...say after Chirstmas! The only way I understand that Crest is even a 3A school is because they took a head count when everyone was out with the flu. If you check student enrollment - I do believe they are well into the 4A population.
So now - what I came to say about the best HS football rivals....yes u have the Battle of Buffalo Creek, and Shelby/Crest but here the past couple of years the 3A Game of the Year has been between.......the Bulldogs and the Chargers....Once again this year, it will remain the 3A Game of the Year outside of the playoffs! Signed - Stat Boy!
