View Full Version : Anbody Ever Studied Film/Filmmakers?
Recreationally or in school. I'm looking for some recommendations. Since getting really into Woody Allen films 10 years ago, I started watching and liking Bergman (once I got over the "subtitle hump"). Then I tried a couple of Fellini films (one I liked, the other I didn't). With that, I've exhausted my knowledge of who's been historically influential in film. So, I'm looking for another name of someone to check out.
Sam peckinpaugh
Roger Vandim
Francois Truffaut - Jules and Jim, and day for night are must sees
of course there is Kubrick
dw griffiths- intolerance is horrible though but historically a must see. But make sure you see birth of nation.
Citizen Kane but all other wells films really suck the hazards of creatively shooting your wad at an early age.
Buster keaton
emile jennings - blue angel
Oh if you're into opera at all bergman did the magic flute as a movie it's great essentially a recorded stage performance with cinematic elements.
Caberet is a great movie one of the first musicals to work as a movie. To me the tomorrow belongs to me sequence is one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever done. that sequence distills all of the causes for ww2 into 3 min.
also check out hard days night, yellow submarine they were much ahead of their time.
O lucky man and "the ruling class" also
and there is "the gods must be crazy" which was so good it ruined the art cinema industry.
Oh yeah roman polanski did a lot of neat early work before he went hollywood
Oh gosh Lina wertmuller how could I forget her.
Excellent. Now, which of those you mentioned had a large and varied body of work dedicated more to exploration of the human condition (as opposed to pure fiction or documentary)? I especially like movies that take the unspectacular elements of life and show the real complexities and struggles therein. Funny you mentioned "The Magic Flute". I keep waiting for it to come back into the video store, but it never does. I think it's permanantly missing.
ok
truffaut
wertmuller
vandam (god created woman)
dw griffiths ( I warn you you're really gonna hate yankees after seeing birth of a nation)
I'd put kubrick here only because his films work on so many levels but to be honest with you no one does bergman better than bergman.
you really can't compare the work of others to bergman for as all artists one does not copy another's style to make their own name so each attemps to analyse life in their own manner.
In the case of griffiths you'll see things you would not expect from someone who not only is pioneering film but film technology as well.
You'll find buster keaton does a lot of character analysis his work can be unreal he also really seems to hate women.
anyway trufaut and wertmuller will give you what you want. Why does Italian cinema focus so much on shit anyway theyalways have a shit scene.
You know, the second Fellini movie (Amercord) I saw had alot of shit and fart references. I thought it sucked, but 8 1/2 was great. I'm really into detailed character development right now. I'm probably a little biased against Kubrick, because I've only seen A Clockwork Orange, which I loved but leaned on shock as part of the effect and the story, and Eyes Wide Shut, which I thought just plain sucked and used shock less successfully, though I hear it had alot of technical merit.
Thanks alot. This is just the kind of thing I was hoping to get. I should have known you'd be up for it. You know something about alot of things. Needless to say, I'm going to check out your recommendations.
Yeah I really didn't like americord either but satyricon is unreal, and nights of cabrina is nice.
i'm shooting for enrolling in film school by august of 2003. i'd love to get engaged on this thread, but i can't right now -- i'll subscribe to it and come back when i've got a free morning!
I'm planning on moving to UNCW in the fall to enroll in their film skool. Did yo know Wilmington is the second largest film city in the US?
Maybe you guys will be classmates. Why do (either of) you want to go to film school? Is it to get into the industry (if so, what part of it)? Are there majors within film school?
i don't know if i really need to or not. i'll find out this year when i begin piecing together my screenplays.
i've always wanted to direct. i don't want to get to be 60 and have stuff left un-tried and really feel like there's no point in me trying.
florida state's film school takes applications each january for the fall. it's a very limited class size, and i'm not entirely sure i'd want to relocate my family after completing school.
it would be something totally for my self-interest.

Not really about directing or writing...but important either way...
While working at Wal_mart during my high school years, I found that I had a knack for arranging things for display that made them look really good even if they were just cheap shit made in taiwan or Ohio. And after that, I left that small town to find that I could do the same with buildings as in walls, spaces, etc. So when I took a job building architectural models while in college, I combined several mindsets and have been doing it for 4.5 years. Last year, we had a guy call us from Wilmington to ask if we would be willing to work on a project that they were doing and my boss turned him down because they wanted one of us to come out there during the production of the set and all the small scael shit they needed. I was almost furious. I thought it would have been a great opportunity because I have always found miniatures for film fascinating. I mean, the Japanese perfected it. At least with the technology that they had. AND THEN CAME STAR WARS!. While I'm not too partial to the story lines, the sets are enough to make a guy like me cream his pants. And now with computers, they have almost put guys like us out of business in the entertainment industry. But I think it still would be a really fun thing to do. Somedays I just don't understand the little Chinaman I work for. I just don't get it.

Sadic, UNCW just added this program. They used to have a minor in film studies under their creative writing ba. It was so popular they added a full fledged film skool. It also has a film group you can join. Screen Gem studios is near by and I heard you get to hang out their a lot if you can get into this group.
Personally, I never wanted to be famous, nor an actor, or really a director. I am just sick of all the crap out there right now and watching this useless human beings make tons of money. I can't say i'm the next big thing, but my ideas will stand against anyone else. My problem is I'm not the greatest writer. I would like to expand my writing technique. But the saying is screenwriters are failed novelists, which suits me just fine.
