Hey splity - glad to have you
Give us the lowdown on East Burke this year. What do you guys have?:D :D :D
Well since I am a player for East Burke I will try not to just blow us out of proportion because even though i think we have a Great chance of winning conference, I think our hittin has to come around and prove itself. Pitching this year will be covered preety good with Jeremy Yoder(senior righty) and Steven Stewart(senior righty) that both have trained extremly hard over the winter. Myself being one of them, I think we will raise a few eyebrows to other teams.
Lineup consists of this:
1B Weston Ijames(posible DH), Andy McCall (good athlete)
2B Robbie Putnam, (strong arm, football qb, athlete, also pitches)
SS Walt Plemmons (quick hands, leader of infeild)
3B Bryan Burns (real quick hands, also pitches)
C Jake Angi (slow feet but good catcher with good blocking)
LF James Bame (contack hitter)
CF Ryan Clanton (quick with descent arm)
RF Trey Hamby (very strong arm)
Utility Dustin Hull (will be playin mulitple positions(OF, 2B this year)
P Yoder, Stewart (both upper 80s)

Ashbrook is supposed to scrimmage Burns @ Ashbrook, 4:30, Thursday, if the field drys. Saturday Ashbrook travels to Mt. Tabor for a round robin scrimmage starting at 12 noon. Don't know who the other team(s) may be. Ashbrook opens the season at home 2/27 against Kings Mtn. @4:30 (if the field drys!).
Much more of this wet weather and we can start posting

Splity my question to you is, do you think that you guys (East Burke) will dominate and run over every other team in the NW4A just like everyone thinks you will? And if not, then do you think that South Caldwell is your only competition or can Watauga give you a run for your money?Because after you guys,South, and Watauga it has repatedly been said that everyone else is just warmup games..

What was the results from todays games - how did the teams look?
Or did they get wetted out????
ajax,
First of all I dont think that no team in the NW4A is going to be a push. Alexander, South and Watagua, East Burke and even McDowell could just catch a break and win the conference Ac Reynolds i dont know much about since they have a new coach.
I think that the teams that makes the least amount of errors and makes the plays will win conference. I think that We (east burke) should have a very good chance of winning conference but we just like all the others have to make the plays behind the pitcher and the pitcher has to make good pitches. This will be very close all the way through i dont think that NO team will go undefeated through conference. Just my 2 cense worth.

OK, let's start posting today's results:
Burns paid a visit to Ashbrook and you could tell Burns had lost a lot of talent from last year. Ashbrook "won" (considering it's a scrimmage) 8-0. They played 8 innings. Ashbrook threw 4 pitchers, 2 innings each. The offensive highlights for Ashbrook were a grand slam by senior right fielder, Garrett Scarborough and a solo shot by junior Sammy Asis. Ashbrook threw a junior lefty, sophomore lefty, sophomore righty and junior righty. Burns also threw about 2 innings per pitcher, all righties and one lefty.
Ashbrook's game with Mt. Tabor on Saturday in Winston-Salem has been changed to Ashbrook tomorrow at 5:00. Mt. Tabor's field still had snow and ice as of today.

North Meck versus Forestview
Since each team needed to work their pitchers, they played 9 1/2 innings. The first 8 with umps, the last 1 1/2 with the coaches calling B/S from behind the mound.
North used 5 pitchers, each throwing 2 innings, Forestview used 4. Cannon from Forestview hit a HR, there were 3 doubles in the game (2 NM, 1 FV).
Middle defense for FV struggled, outfield mis-tracked a few balls. North played solid defensively, committing 1 error. Forestview ended up with about 4 hits, NM about 10 hits. The FV pitchers struck out 4 and walked 4, NM struck out 15 & walked 4 batters.
John Kellet led North with 2 hits, Matt Nossell & Tom Porter (2B) also contributed strong hits. North's lead-off batter reached base 6 of the 9 innings the were at bat. Matt Murphy looked great on the bump the final 2 innings. Final score (as if it matters)
NM 4, FV 2
Central Cabarrus traveled to South Meck
It was pretty much what people have posted about the two teams. CC can mash the ball..they are not looking for walks. Pitching is a little suspect, though
South played real well considering their first scrimmage game. The Pitchers pitched well, the hitters hit and the final was 13-2 or something like that.
Everybody, naturally, looked a little rusty, but there were many things to be pleased about if you were a SM fan.

how did north look against forestview? who were some of the leading hitters and how was norths pitching?
NCBBallFan
02-22-03, 12:11 AM
North looked good against Forestview - All 5 pitchers threw effectively, each going 2 innings. Collectively, they had about 14 strikeouts to 4 walks. They held Forestview to 4 hits. The defense committed 1 error in 10 innings.
John Kellett hit very well, putting the ball in play everytime, Joel Burris showed great bat control, hitting behind the runner. The speedsters really burned it... Cavasinni, Skidmore, Williams, Portone all showed their "stuff". Nossel & Porter each doubled.
Very good first outing
Negatives: Stranding runners but that's more related to shoveling 18 guys in and out of the line-up.

I heard last night that the Myers Park-Hopewell game has been moved to Saturday, March 1st, 2:00 PM, at Hopewell. Apparently, the change affects ONLY the varsity teams, as the JV game is still on at Myers Park on Friday at 4:30.

South Caldwell scrimmaged West Lincoln on Friday and only got 3 innings in due to the rain. South looked good in the scrimmage.
South plays host to Hibriten on Tuesday the 25th at 4PM
To those who wondered whether Wes Williams would make an impact to TC Roberson's program. Well the sophomore transfer from Freedom sure answered those questions early. In TC's scrimmage with East Rutherford, Wes homered to lead off the game and doubled in his next AB. Pay attention. Three more years of Maybin and Williams at TC.

Yes the JV coach at North knows Allen can pitch but has not seen him do so as of yet. I also think they are short at first and have some rule that pitchers can only pitch. I'm not sure I understand that rule unless they have some sort of strong development program for the pitchers. NCBBallFan does the varsity have the same rule or is this just for JV?

Welcome to North Meck JV Baseball. No - there is no such "rule" - unless the JV Coach wants to put it in. But it is consistent with what he did last year. Pitchers only pitched. If they were good hitters, they could hit for themselves in games, else, they were DH'ed for.
This goes back to the prior Head Coach at North before King. The JV Coach was an assistant for varsity under Gillespie and that was one of his "big things". Also, pitchers, if they did hit, hit 9th back then. For some reason, they believed that if you pitched in H.S., you must be a pitcher in college so why bother to ever let you hit again. A lot of H.S. coaches over the past 20 years have done this, but it weakens the team. A.J. had a post about this very thing when we were talking about hitting styles and methods.
The Varsity & Coach King don't bother with such "rules". Mark McAuley routinely started and hit 3rd in the order. When he wasn't pitching, he played SS. On Varsity, you will have pretty much the best 9 guys on the field.
What this does for JV is to spread out the playing time and give more players opportunities to show their stuff - some people like it, I personally don't - why have some of your best players riding the bench instead of being in the field playing positions.
MP has West Meck on Wednesday, Independence on Thursday. They have a good staff behind Woodard, including but not limited to Rob Wilson (senior - committed to Davidson), Logan Smith (jr.), Tim Frye (lefty, soph), Craig "Mr. Submarine/Sidearm" Earls. Not sure who else may be throwing this year.

NCBBallFan: Thanks for the insight. Greg would like to pitch but not at the expense of playing once a week or once every two weeks. In high school many pitchers are some of the better hitters and fielders, I sure hope the pitchers get true developement during practice due to their lack of game time. Good luck to the Varsity Tuesday and I hope to see them play soon!

I can guarantee one thing - the pitchers will come out of the season in GREAT condition. North's JV team runs more than the track team (seriously - the Track team laughed at them last year when they saw how much running they did!!)

Both the North Meck Viking Varsity and J.V. started the 03 season off on a winning note against very good South Meck teams. On the Varsity level Tom Porter and Sam Pierce combined to limit South to 1 run, while Nossel, J Eppes, and Cavi supplied enough offensive explosion to win. Outstanding defense provided by Hollar in the OF, saved at least 3 runs. Nice receiving job done by the Freshman catcher Profitt. At the J.V. level both Rosenbaum and Parks pitched good ball for 3 innings each. Timely hitting by Kellett and Pou powered the offense with Pou hitting one of the longest doubles seen at North Meck to str8 away center field. Final Scores Varsity wins 2 to 1 and J.V. wins 5 to 2.

It's Coach Mark King - He is in his second year at North but he came from Southpoint where he was the Varsity Assistant. He is in his 9th year of High School baseball.
All 4 pitchers in the game looked very, VERY good.
Worrell (05) started for SM and went 4 strong innings, getting touched for one early 1st inning run...He settled right in and was very tough through 4 innings of work. Vartanian (03) was the 2nd guy out. It was the same, 1 quick run in the 5th when he started and then a very solid performance. The two SM pitchers limited north to 5 hits over 7 innings. Porter (05) went 5 2/3 .. strong through 5 and then started to fade in the 6th when he gave up a run. Sam Pierce (05) was the reliever, who worked quickly to 4 batters, ending the game.
With all of the tension surrounding the opening game of the season, everyone on the mound looked composed. It's going to be good seasons for both teams.
If this game was played later in the year, the strong hitting for South Meck would have been more of a factor. That is a very scarry line-up to face. They managed 2 hits off Porter but put the ball in play all night: a very threatening team.
For an early season game in the cold - both defenses looked very good. Kyle Shelton (04) at 3B for SM and Tristan Hollar (04) in RF for NM had particularly outstanding games with the glove.
Offense centered around: Robinson (03) for SM who got both of their hits going 2-3 with a 2B & an RBI. Cavasinni (05) went 2-3 and Nossel (03) went 2-3 with an RBI for NM.

Hey oldguy ... about NM vs SM
The players that no one has noticed or mentioned about that game probably had the greatest impact on it's outcome but both remained completely invisible. I thought both catchers were very good - neither one came into play - no passed balls, good blocking. On the one stolen base in the game: you could have been godzilla and not thrown that runner out - he had a great jump and was very fast. When a catcher does his job, no one notices him.
Robert Proffitt was behind the plate for NM. He did a great job of blocking and framed very well all night long. Pretty good for a Freshman...completely invisible, the sign of a great one.

Is Kestner gonna play for EB this year? I spoke to him one night and he said no.
Just to clear the air on the new South Caldwell players. None are transfers and none are there by getting post office box addresses. No one can get into SC that way. The school is way overcrowded and will accept no transfers. When you move to here you have to show proof of residence and directions to your home. And you can't move in with a relative who is not your LEAGAL gaurdian and come to school there. One girl from another school wanted to do that this year to play softball and it wasn't allowed. Now the new guys parents may have ove in the district just so their kidds could play baseball at SC but that would be a big step just to paly one year of ball. I do know the Gurreu kids parents moved down on the golf course in Granite Falls in a very expensive neighborhood and I can't see anyone doing that just for baseball. Also he has a sister who is a sophmore going to school at SC now too so it wasn't just him coming here. This is not Charlotte where you can go where ever you want so getting in to SC requires that you LIVE in the district.
Now I've said enough about that with my predictions I think the conference will come down to Alexander and South Caldwell with East Burke having a shot should either of these two falter. Payne for Alexander is the best pitcher in the conference and will take AC a long way. Ready for some good weather and some baseball, how bout you guys. Good luck to all nw4a teams. Hope one of our teams bring home a state championship this year. It could happen

I did attend the very cold game Tuesday night..Matthews pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up 1 run while on the mound and then getting credit for the other run on the last play. Stephens brought in their closer to face the last hitter and he laid down a suicide squeeze. Alexander threw Hollifield for 5 innings, he allowed 1 or 2 hits walked 1 and gave up 1 run. Kinniard came in and faced the final 6 batters striking out 3 of them..Both kids pitched and excellent game with Hollifield really keeping Stephens hitters off-guard..The umpire had a very low strikezone helping Matthews a lot..ACHS hit him all game they just hit i right at the defenders. I think ACHS had about 6 or 7 hits..Anyone got any scores on any other NW4A teams?

Hey Southpaw,
That game against Mooresville should be interesting if not just to see old acquaintances.
No Kestner decided to be a cheerleader this spring. The word is that he is going to the University of Tenn. to cheer.

I just heard that rumor too.....I can't confirm it...and the rumor has it that Hopewell will be playing Butler instead of Myers Park........NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The rumor was circulating a practice today...and, according to my player, even the coach mentioned it.

Maybe the only time this year I can see Woodard and we will have to face Cruse twice.

Monday Feb. 24 - East Rutherford 11 vs Crest 2.
East Rutherford pitching staff no hit the Chargers.
Covington 4innings, Flack 2innings, Jones 1inning.
Friday Feb 28 - East Rutherford 9 vs N. Gaston 3.
ER looks like you are off to a strong start. Very nice team and well coached.
how is covington and flack throwing right now ? I see flack over the summer in legion and he was throwing decent but not really impressive we hit him preety good.
What sports does he cheer for in the spring? And what's the deal with the male cheerleaders at EB? Have they started some kind of program where they work with them to get scholarships? None of those three ever appear to be all that happy or enthused when they're cheering, unless they're holding a girl above their head :)))

Seems like EB has a competition squad, not sure though. I heard the same about Josh, that UT had offered him a scholarship to cheer.
Him not playing hurts East Burke's pitching staff..Splity when do you guys play or have you played yet (Scrimmage included),and whats your take on AC Reynolds beating Asheville and Roberson..Also, waht about South committing 10 errors and still beating Hibriten?
We (east Burke) has not played a game or scrimmage yet but we open up against Newton Conover on monday, hopefully we'll get to play, and then we play them again on wednesday. I agree Kestner not playing could hurt us but I think that it will pay off in the long run because of junior pitchers robbie putnam and bryan burns will have to step up for the team.

Rockets topped last years 3a state champs TC Roberson 7-1 but TCR had 8 players sign scholarships off last years great team and Maybin is still playing basketball so I wouldn't read too much into that, but it's still a good win anytime we beat Roberson....Rockets beat Erwin today 13-2 to go 3-0...new coach and an encouraging start.
ACHS posted a win against St. Stevens and Shane Matthews last week. They have St. Stevens again 3/4, Hickory 3/5, and Davie 3/7. Hopefully the weather will permitt. The ACHS vs Wilkes Central will be made up 3/19..
I live up in the mountains and from talking to some people it sounds like they have been doing nothing but hitting, hitting, and mor hitting. I know that in the first game of the season they went down to North Forsyth and lost 3-1. Josh Leyshon gave up 2 earned runs (1 unearned) and the Pioneers left 10 men in scoring postition, bases loaded twice and 2nd and 3rd once. They will travel back down there on Monday. This past Saturday (3-1-03) they went down to South Meck and had a 2-0 lead in the third with two runners on and zero outs when the game was called b/c of rain. So far thats been two solid performances for Watauga. The rest of the non-conference schedule: South Meck (1) North Forsyth (1), West Forsyth (2), Charlotte Christian (2), and North Davidson (2). All of these teams have been ranked except North Davidson at either ihigh.com or at impactbaseball.com. Watch out for Watauga; pitching has been good and they are getting runners on base against good teams.
Yes, I watched Watauga on Saturday. Mighty impressed with theit hitting and Nigaro is an excellent player. It was hard to get a feel for the game, nobody wanted to be there because of the weather. I liked Watauga and great fans, also. But did you have to bring that bad weather with you? :D
AC Reynolds 13 Erwin 2
Tuscola 9 Pisgah 1
East Henderson 11 North Henderson 1
The only game highlights I have seen was concerning the Tuscola game. Every starter hed at least 1 hit. Downey got the win for Tuscola and McConnell had 3 hits in the game.
This was a nice bounce back for East Henderson after their season opening loss to Hendersonville.
AC Reynolds has been a big surprise so far this year. Tuscola continues to confirm my belief that they are a top 5 team in the state
AC Reynolds has a new coach this year. Seems to have the kids playing real well here at the start of the season. Reynolds used to be a strong program. Slipped a little the last 4-5 years. Maybe ready to make a comeback in baseball. There are a lot of excellent athletes at that school.

North Rowan 7 Kannapolis 6
2 out bottom of the 7th. one of the fastest runners in the area
( a senior) on second base. Mead rips one to the 345' left field wall , burns the fielder. Guess where the senior, fastest guy around is ? Yep you are right , standing on second tagging up, decides to run now and gets thrown out at the plate to end the game. UNBELIEVABLE !!!!
Who's fault ??? Mainly the coach , for not explaining to run on 2 outs, and watching the ball almost leave the park instead of waving the runner on. But at the same time the players fault for being on the team anyway. I'm kinda curious wondering if its just to build your past performance resume or to show off that you lettered in 2 or 3 sports. Go back and play football is about all i have to say. UNBELIEVABLE !!!!
And the politics at A.L. Brown are UNBELIEVABLE or is it incompetence of the staff there . Please let me know .
Numerous errors by the catcher kept NR runners in scoring position often. You live with that ( sophmore catcher ).
Petty didnt do so bad , a few errors hurt alot and was left in the game 4 or 5 outs to long , Bowers and Gonzalez finished up looking pretty good .
I saw a few good positives in this game , the infield is pretty good, Boger , Bartles , and Mead. I think First is wide open for Mahre and Carithers to battle for.
The outfield is ok , Worthington with speed , Smith and Gonzalez , Petty when he isnt pitching.
Kannapolis has alot of young pitching,
Petty started today , Mahre will pitch some , junior pitchers , Bowers , Gonzalez ,Carithers , Mead , and Bartles might see some mound time.
Anyway, South Rowan comes to K-Town tomorrow. This ought to be a good one. SR is very young also but has some very talented
players including Stirewalt the senior who transferred after being Dq'd in Kannapolis. ( what a system we have ).

I guess everyone thinks that Freedom is gonna be a push over team. Well your wrong. I've seen them work out for the past two months and they are busting their butts. They beat a GOOD Hickory team on this past Saturday. They have good pitching and good hitting. Another thing, I tired of hearing all this BS about **** *******. When he transfered from ******, that was the best thing for the team. All he did was bring destruction to the team. He has the worst attitude of any baseball player that I have EVER seen. I'm very glad to know that everyone is looking past Freedom. I hope you keep that up, b/c when u play them, they will be out to get you.

No one is looking past Freedom... The predictions for the observers has Freedom in the middle of the NW4A this year, which is an outstanding conference from top to bottom.
The team that has captured the early season attention so far is ACR, because people did expect them to be a little down and they have started like gang-busters.
And you are right in your assessment of Hickory - that is a fine team. But we are not like the clt.com board - no flame wars on this board... it's about baseball.

All I heard was that the Waddell team was not hitting last night. Waddell got only 3 hits. 1 from Krimminger, 1 from DeSilva and 1 from Hampton.
ooo..ooo..pic me..pic me
Harding opened the first with a three run blast off of Adam Schirra.
Waddell could not get their bats going..Waddell will have a difficult time this year without Krimminger pitching.
But this time last year they were 10 runned like 4 out of their first 5 games. They have improved quite a bit defensively and will shock some conference teams this year

I just heard that Freedom beat Shelby 5 or 6 to 2. Weatherman evidently pitched very well and Dergins shut them down in relief from what I have heard. Maybe someone that was there can fill in the blanks.
Yes, Freedom did beat Shelby 5-2. Chad Weatherman pitched a great game. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 2 runs. The 2 runs were off a home run, (which the ball was 2 feet out of the zone, and the kid still hit it out). Alex Dergins came in and pitched the final 2 innings. Alex Chapman and Cody Bryant led the Patriots with 2 hits a piece. The Pats are suppose to play Hibritan today, but their field is in bad shape. If they don't play today, they will play on Saturday. The Patriots did a better job of hitting the ball against a better pitcher. I hope they get their game in today. Good Luck Boys!!!!

Concord - 3
WP - Lee Blalock (2-0), 8 k's, 3 hits
The game was highlighted by a sophomore, Andy Tillman who dropped a bomb, his first homerun, and went 3-3 with 2 rbis.

Mike Facchinei, 1-0, threw a no hitter tonite for WH, facing 1 batter over the minimum. 12 k's, 1 walk. Was at 86 on the gun with a nasty 12-6 curveball that he had control of all game. Very strong for 1st outing of the year and 2 weeks removed from basketball.
Hitting for WH, Facchinei was 1-3, but that was a grand slam in the 3rd. Junior Josh Andrews was 2-3 with 2 HR's. Mitchel Pridmore was 3-3 with 2 doubles. Kevin Allen was 2-4.

LakeNormanFan,,,, its official. You guys "DID" beat us yesterday. It wasn't pretty for us, and to be honest, we expected more. I think thats our problem, our boys "just showed up". To their credit, they played a very big and emotional game with West Rowan just the night before. Anyway, nobody likes to hear excuses, so congratulations.

In the South/ St. Stephens Matthews and Reid both had a hard time getting calls from the home plate umpire. All the runs didnt come off of Matthews. He exited the game in the 4th inning giving up maybe 5 or 6. South Caldwell hit him well though. The Spartans had 5 players with at least 2 hits apiece. Casey Morris was 4-5, Josh Bentley, Charlie Harrison,Russell Reid, Shane Coffey each had 2 hits apiece. Reid went the distance pitching for the spartans striking out 13. The spartan offense seems to be coming around though.
Kannapolis' bats came alive again after a terrible day yesterday to beat a good East Meck team in 5 innings by the mercy rule. Daniel Smith, Andrew Mead and Ryan Query led Kannapolis with 2 hits apiece. One of Smith's hits was a homerun and Ryan Petty also homered for Kannapolis. Drew Mahre pitched well for the Wonders. Somebody from East Meck also homered during this game, but I haven't gotten his name yet. It was good to hear the sound of those bats again in Ktown...
