What famous people have you had drinks with?

*Comedian Harlan Williams - pretty cool guy
*The guy who opened for Sam Kennison on his final tour. People kept buying him drinks and my cousin and I were sitting next to him. He had more booze than he could handle, so he started feeding his free-bees to us.
*Former Iowa Hawkeyes Jay Hilgenberg and Marv Cook. Hilgy played Center for the 85 Bears and Cook was a TE for the Rams. Hilgenberg and I went shot for shot at a bar in Iowa City just after he retired. Saw Cook cry one night after he topped his buddies beer and the bottle broke. Cut the guy up pretty bad. Drank with numerous Iowa and Northern Iowa athletes at different times, but I wouldn't call any of them famous.
*Jim Harbaugh...his college roomate is from Cedar Rapids. He visits here about once a year or so. Hell of a guy!

The bar I worked at was the closest place to both the local comedy club and the concert arena, so I served numerous Rockers and Comedians between '93-'96.
Another bar I worked at opened on the night the WWF was in town. Talked to McMahon at length and met the Hulkster, don't remember the others but there were about six or seven WWFers there with there peoples.

Dave Matthews

The entire band 'Phish'

John Popper - didn't say much because he was literally cramming a gargantuan sandwich down his throat. This dude was HUGE.

I went to college with Matt Stone, but he wasn't famous yet.

All of these guys were completely normal, you'd never know they were famous. Particularly Trey and Dave Matthews.

I met Bob Weir once, and he was a jackass.

I was having a drink and saw Tommy LaSorta and Mike Ditka.
Was buying a drink and met Dom Deluese.
I drank beer with Matt Dillion at my buddy's wedding and got his autograph for my wife.
Had dinner with Roman Gabrielle.
Had a few with Craig Colquit, punter for Pitt. Steelers. I was dateing his sister back then.
Had a beer with Clarence Clemens, after Springsteens concert in Red Bank, NJ at a local bar:cool:

Flew from LA to Toronto next to John Candy when the Kings played Toronto in the NHL Playoffs (no, Sly, the plane didn't tip to our side). We was a Crown man.

Was in a LA watering hole doing some silicon viewing and a "waitress" brought a sandwich to a patron next to my buddy on the bench seat. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a long black arm extend to hand the "waitress" a $20. A familiar voice said, "keep the change." I looked over to see Magic Johnson. He constantly had at least 5 "waitresses" hanging on him as we shared beers for a couple hours.

Partied often with many Rams players after games at El Torito down the street from Anaheim Stadium.

Flew to Canton/Akron with several NFL Hall of Famers. Quite the drinking bunch, but Chuck Bednarik (sp?) was the wildest. I think he could still kick some serious ass.

I had a concessions gig at Red Rocks for a few years, and he *dave* used to come early and hang out and drink coffee. He'd just chat. Made the girls that worked for me turn into 13 year olds.

One year, he lost track of time, and the gates opened. He got on all fours behind my stand, hiding from the teeny-boppers. A few saw him, and he hung out with them, signed autographs, posed for pictures, kissed them on the cheek, the whole deal. About as nice as a guy could be, rock star or not. To this day i buy his records for that reason alone. Matter of fact, they made a record out of that Red Rocks show. Must've been the lattes.

no drinking but have had a few celebrity run ins -

was shopping in the Ralph Lauren store on Rodeo drive - Joan Collins and her latest boy toy were looking through the same rack.

also almost got run over by Lorenzo Lamas in his Ferrari at a hotel in Palm Springs.

Bought liquor in a Ft Lauderdale booze store with Joe Namath - he wouldn't give me his autograph cause I looked like a crazed lunatic.

spent thirty minutes talking to Bobbie Allison in LAX during a layover. they were coming back from the first NASCAR race in Australia - they won and had this big ass trophy. One of the nicest guys I ever met.

Bo Diddley and band was on the same flight to Puerto Rico as the wife and I on our honey moon. I talked to him for a little while in the Atlanta airport . My wife was pale and hungover from the night before and thought he was BB King. That pissed him off and he just walked away.

I had a beer with Bonz from Stuck Mojo. Not sure if anyone knows who that is. Had a drink with the Phunk Junkees. My drunken roomate pissed of Henry Rollins. I was scared. Matt Dohortery came to my grandma's for Christmas. My cousin was a friend of his in college. Sly and WWJD will get a kick out of that.

I forgot a good one that wasn't drinks...

I met a guy backstage at the Charlotte dead show in like 91. I'd seen him around, and since my folks lived here, I offered him a place to stay. He agreed. I asked him who gave him his pass - he said bear.

*for those that don't know, bear is Owsley Stanley. Owsley was basically the driving force of manufacturing and marketing LSD throughout the 60's. All of the Acid tests and Merry Prankster shit - Owsley acid*

I'd met bear a few times briefly - hard not to at that many Dead shows. He was a muscle head - and the guy that stayed at my house was some kind of All American wrestler. At any rate, I wake up the next morning, I'm talking with the guy, and the doorbell rings. I answer it - it was Owsley. At my parents house, in Myers Park.

That was a highlight.

I worked at a large hotel/golf course complex while in high school and during the summers while in college. It was a place in northern michigan that was a popular vacation spot. you'd run into people at the bars there. Steve Yzerman, Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, Alan Trammel, Walter Payton, Mike Ditka, Jack Morris, Chuck Daley, Joe Thiesman, Isaih Thomas, Bill Lambeer, several other red wings...they have training camp in the city....i met just about all of them. i haven't met one yet that was a jackass..including bill lambeer...he's actually a nice guy.

one of my friends drove the airport shuttle to the hotel. he picked up pat summeral one day who was there to do the golf tournament. my friend said he cussed the whole way...every other word. which for him was funny because he was driving and just heard that voice he knew from tv cussing.

i've meet the members of the band verve pipe. they are from the city i went to college in. they used to be called 'johnny with an eye.' the drum player slept with one of my friends girlfriends. from that day on...everything had an eye. "pass the salt with an eye" "change the channels with an eye" "let's go to the store with an eye" etc...he used to get so mad..

OH YEAH!!!! I met Rikki at the Dillairds at Four Seasons. This was back when he needed a body guard. i was speechless. I was a HUGE Poison fan.

As for the Misfits, that was Twiggy. He went to (I think it's called DragonCon or something like that). He rode the elevator with them on three different occassions. He talked about the weather with them or something stoopid like that. I may have told you all it was me, but now that he posts here and you know who I am I can't lie about stuff anymore. Twiggy has some f'd up stories.

Some good ones in there!

Reminded me of a couple things...

You guys were talking about Phish. When they played here a few years back they got to town a few hours early and their hotel wasn't ready, so they went into the YMCA next to the hotel to take a shower. Front Desk staff let them in no problem...then the old farts in the locker room got a look at them and called the manager to have them removed. They act like the Y is a god damn country club or something? It was a pretty ridiculous scene!

I almost ran over the drummer from Night Ranger. Dumbass walked right out in front of me.

good one. I gained new respect for Night Ranger after boogie nights, though. Anybody ever do a lotta drugs? That scene was one of the best drug scenes ever put to film.

Another one was in The Royal Tennenbaums, when that dude jumps out the window to avoid rehab. The kicker though, was all the odd folks that were hanging out. Goddam took that right outta my brain.

yadda yadda yadda.

I guess it depends on what you'd consider famous.

About 10 years ago, I was on vacation and with a buddy at the Spanish Galleon in N.Myrtle playing pool and drinking. Around 10-11:00 this big group of TALL guys came in and we figured we had to know who they were. Turns out it was a bunch of Duke b-ball players. Drank a little with Billy King and Danny Ferry for a while. They seemed pretty cool. Almost glad they could hang with us instead of being ogled by the crowd. Anyway, they were there for someone's wedding and most of the rest of them were ripped. I think it was Quin Snyder's? I can't be sure, but Quin was smashed. (Didn't someone say they know his wife? Does this time frame sound right?)

To make a long story short, those guys turned out to be a lot cooler than you'd expect. And the LAST thing they wanted to talk about was basketball.

There was this lunch thing (I was there for work reasons) and I had a grand time! He was very entertaining and insightful.
