View Full Version : My Computer's gettin' slow!!???

My computer's getting slow lately. I understand that it's an older machine, but still!!

It's a 133 mhz Pentium with 24 meg RAM. I underrstand that this is not much in terms of today's fast machines, but it's what I can afford at this stage of the game. I seem to remember reading an article about this some time in the past, but don't remember what it said.

Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, etc.?? I know one of the first ones is going to be buy a new computer, but that's not an option at the present.

Thanks!!

Might as well drop some more RAM in. 24 is awfully small.

Sorry sd,

but you're going to have to. With new web technologies coming out, it's going to take a lot more than what you have.

actually, you're computer's been slow -- you're just getting sick of it is all.

keep away from the latest software. I hope you're only using windows 95/98 and not trying to run XP or something...

I upgraded my old 233 machine to a 533 Celeron for a couple hundred dollars a few years ago. In hindsight, I should just bought a new one (which I did a year later). Upgrading old stuff just isn't very cost effective, I find.

s - open up the case and replace the hampster - he is probably getting tired. Or at least grease the wheel - see if that helps.

I had a 120 mhz 6 gig 16 md ram computer and added a new 180 processor, 16 gig hard drive, and 128 mb ram, new modem, video card, and put a fresh install of win98. It ran like a champ until about 4 months ago. The fan went on the processor, which is made by PNY and has a lifetime warranty, so it's down. PNY has decided to not make these parts anymre, so they are going to "pro-rate" a refund. What do you divide by for lifetime? Anyway, it cost about $350, and it really fast on the interent and I ran a lot of graphics software. So, it can be done for very little. But this risk is having all these nice parts and missing just one makes the rest worthless crap too. An older computers ram is more expensive than a newer one, and slower, so don't waste your money.

Morale of the story, donate it to a school and go to Circut City, Best Buy, or whereever you like to shop, and buy a new one. There are some great deals on the internet, like www.buy.com Yahoo shopping.

I wish I needed a new computer. Here's what I would buy

What OS are you using, if anything but windows 3.0 YOU NEED MORE RAM.
You can go to some used computer store and up grade to a faster machine for about $300.
I 'm new here in Charlotte so I don't know any?

RAM does make the difference. In a PC that old, I'm betting you'll have to by a pair of RAM chips, and you'll need to make sure your motherboard has room for said chips.
