Did anyone see the game?

Thomas Hovis must have pitched very well. How many innings did he throw and who were the hitters?

It's amazing that at least 3 '05's were the starting pitchers for their team yesterday

Do not be surprised by the success of 05's. The 05 talent pool is tremendeous in NC. These kids have played 5 to 6 years of very competitive baseball on the regional and national levels.

I didn't see the game but I have gotten a first-hand report from an Olympic dad. Thomas Hovis went all 5 innings, struck out 8, gave up 2 hits, walked none and hit 1. The one WC run was unearned. Hovis also hit a three-run double. Matt Claphan was 2-3 for Olympic.

The Olympic dad tells me that West Charlotte is really weak.

I play for West Meck and was not overly impressed with East Meck. They hit the ball pretty good and most of them know how to hit it where it is pitched. I was told after the game that they threw their #1 and #2 pitchers at us and they didn't look all that great. As for West, I think that we can contend very much in the MECA-8. Our pitching is very good and our defense is better than it has played our first two games. If we can cut down on our errors and hit better, our pitching is good enough to win us some big games.

Fantastic baughn3......

Keep the reports coming... Update us on your pitching rotation, key hitters, everything. I know the game was a tight one 4-1 and I know that East Meck is supposed to threaten in the SW4A....... It will good to have another team chasing Hopewell with us.....

yes the game was plaed tuesday....ashboro won 5-2...kannapolis had good pitching but had errors in the field...and did do so hot at the plate except for a few. drew maher, andrew mead , austin carithers all pitched 2 and did a good job, petty closed it out. in my opinion both teams could have played alot better

i know that east has good senior leadership but what it takes to win in highschool baseball is pitching and thats what east has the least of. they have one above average arm (buchanen). Burnham is a good player but he's not a pitcher. I predict a finish of third or fourth by east meck. How many playoff spots does the sw4a have this year?

the butler pitchers all looked great. they threw strikes and made very few mistakes for so early in the season. i think they had a combined maybe one or two hitter. none of them (except haus) dominated, they just threw strikes. Haus looked pretty good ( i think he struck out 5 in two innings of work). Vance pitching on the other hand looked pretty weak. Their pitchers walked alot of people. I agree with reddtroll that both teams hitting looked pretty weak. I guess thats just a by product of all of these rainy days.

Asheboro looks to have a strong team. They had some good arms and a couple of guys who can swing it a bit. The Kannapolis pitching looked good, but the defense didn't. Neither team was lighting up the scoreboard with the bats, but it's early.

Intimidator Coach

A scrimmage is all you can call it. There was no umpire behind the plate which left the catchers to make the calls.
Kannapolis pitching was pretty good . Defense made errors that cost all of the runs that Ashboro got and the same for all of ktowns runs .
It's going to be interesting in the NPC .

K-town - Piedmont game was postponed Friday.

One player does not make a team. A quality team can win in the absence of any single player. It doesn't sound like it bodes well for the TC depth this year. It's easy to pitch around 1 guy -- 2 or 3 is another story.

Amazing "Game of the Week" up at Myers Park/Hopewell today....Myers Park @ Hopewell.

This game report is from multiple sources.

2:00 start, Umps show up at 2:30....
What was a drizzle @ 2 was a light rain @2:30
By 3:00, it was just plain raining
@ 3:15 the field look unplayable to me
@3:45 going into the bottom of the 3rd....you get the picture.

Rob Woodard, MP (03) started for MP, Josh Bush (03) started for Hopwell. Woodard looked good, good movement on his pitches. Very nice pop (87-88 range) on his FB in the rain - he may have touched a little higher, but I doubt it. I really like his mechanics - good use of the lower body, effective repeatable delivery, fundamentally sound. Bush pitched effectively, breaking the barrier of 80 mph on a few pitches - nice little curve.

Both catchers looked very good to me in the rain. They blocked well, moved effectively and both gave good late targets, moving in and out. Dan Woodall (04) was the catcher for Hopewell. The catcher for MP was a red-head, but I didn't catch his name.

Early on, the defenses looked HORRIBLE. 5 errors in the first two innings for MP. Hopewell had 1 error, but the 1B bailed out a throwing error early. Both catchers caught runners early in the game. Hopewell got 1 hit off of Woodard in the first 2 innings, their bats looked a little late. ....and led 3-0, all unearned. Myers Park struggled at the plate early in the game.

Woodard kept his composure, went to pretty much FB and started challenging the hitters (sucessfully I might add). Capps relieved Bush for Hopewell. MP started a comeback and going into the last inning, Hopewell was leading 3-2. Cruse came on to close out the game and MP popped him for 3 runs and the victory.

[Correction made here - my boo boo]Wilson relieved Woodard for MP. My late inning reporter was only interested in results, not details .... sorry .. I had turned into an ice-cube and left by this time, my clothing 3 pounds heavier from the rain.

If you like cold, raining, soggy, sloppy-early baseball, this was the one for you. Both teams settled in and played better but struggled early.

Final Score: MP 5 - Hopewell 3

West Rowan and Asheboro got their scrimmage game in, but the field was about as soggy as it could be and still be able to get on it with anything other than a boat.

The 2 teams battled to a 9 inning 5-5 tie. Both pitching staffs looked pretty good. Each limiting the other team to only 7 hits. The only extra base hits coming from the bats of Brian Graham and Brian Aycoth, of West, who doubled.

It was really difficult for me to keep up with the players from Asheboro, since the coaches from both teams decided not to wear uniforms in such muddy conditions. I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with the kids at Asheboro and since they batted the whole team and they all wore identical blue sweat suits it only compounded the problem.

Defensively, both teams did a pretty good job, each only made a couple of errors and considering the conditions......... Aycoth continues to do a good job behind the dish for West and I thought that both catchers used by Asheboro were equally effective for them.

I must say that one big surprise for me has been the play of Wade Moore(fr) of West. In the past I have said that I didn't think that he would be ready to play varsity but now, after seeing him play in 2 scrimmage games, I may just have to eat those words. He has played both the OF and hit much better than I thought he would. He has also shown alot more maturity in his failures than he has in the past. He is a rising star that I hope continues to shine.

Agree with all of your report about the MP/Hopewell game, NC...except for the fact that Rob Wilson relieved Robert Woodard very effectively (especially considering the horrendous conditions)in the bottom of the 4th for Myers Park. It was during Wilson's time on the mound that Myers Park rallied, so Wilson is credited with the win.

It's too bad that these two talented teams had to go at it in the worst environment imaginable for baseball. Both teams should be credited for playing as hard as they did under the circumstances.

(By the way, I thought of Braves' "Table Boat" in the "For Sale" thread. By the 3rd inning, it would have been an appropriate way for any player to travel to his position.)

South Meck vs. Watauga @ South @ 3:00

Called off by the umpires at the top of the 3rd inning. Game started out in a drizzle and the conditions and field got worse from there on out. South Meck's staff continuously worked on the pitcher's mound and batting box with quick dry. Both teams were working under increasingly bad weather conditions by the minute. At the top of the 3rd it was Watauga 3 and South Meck 0. Tough luck and a long drive for the Watauga families to be denied a full game. This time last year when South Meck and Watauga played, the sun was shining brightly and spectators were wearing shorts! Its just a gamble when a game is scheduled this time of year!

Some random thoughts to supplement the fine posts so far on the game of the week:

NCBBall is kind to the umpire when he says he arrived at 2:30 -- I had it 2:45 and the game started at 2:50 -- really a shame -- I understand it was "pouring at his house" so he didn't come. The base ump was on time. The plate ump's performance went down hill from his late arrival -- two really bad neck high strikes (one each way) and absolutely no outside corner for any of the 5 pitchers. He often looked and sounded unsure of his calls.

Myers Park has to be concerned about defense. 6 errors, 4 on relatively routine infield ground balls, one on a fly ball to the outfield and 1 on a throw from the outfield. It's easy to blame the weather, but I suspect it's more because the guys have been unable to take a lot of infield. I'd suggest going overboard on that when the field dries. It will be tough to compete unless the defense improves dramatically.

Myers Park actually used 2 catchers and both are very high quality players. Tim Kramer caught the first two innings and his sacrifice fly plated the first MP run. JJ Rollins caught innings 3-5 and had the "game winning" rbi in the top of the 5th on a single up the middle. These guys will push each other all year -- too bad they both can't be playing all the time. Coach Deming will need both bats.

I thought Cruse didn't warm up long enough, especially if he's used to starting. Sure enough, his first 6 pitches were balls. That put Wilson on and allowed Woodard to get ahead in the count.

I thought Bush looked really strong -- lifted without giving up a hit -- anybody know why? His first inning was just outstanding-- striking out Wilson and Woodard and then picking off Bowman after two on and no out. The big differene for Hopewell was that Bush was always ahead of the hitters, Capps and Cruse had some control problems and got behind.

I thought the most effective pitch that any of the pitchers threw during the afternoon was Wilson's change up. He really had the Hopewell hitters off balance with it.

The only impressive inning was the MP rally in the top of the 5th. Trailing 3-2 and knowing this was the last inning, they got a break when Cruse didn't have his control. He found it to Woodard, but in a great plate appearance, Woodard fouled off several pitches before tripling to right over the right fielder's head. It was a line drive that stayed up forever. Can't remember what Logan Smith did to get on -- he must have walked, too. Rollins singled, scoring Woodard and then Smith scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

It was the worst weather I've seen a game played in. It should have been called in the second inning. The dirt portion looked like a lake. Hopewell must have spent $100 on the diamond dry used during the game -- who knows how much they used prior to the game. I guess the ump wasn't going to call the game after he was the cause of it starting so late.

We need springtime. Fast. :sunny:

Catcher Chad Powell broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to put the Patriots past the Tornadoes. Alex Chapman got the win in this the first game for Freedom. Hickory goes to 1-1 on the year. Powell and Chapman led Freedom with a pair of hits. Alex Durgins started for Freedom, he gave up 4 runs in 4 innings, struck out 2 and gave up 6 hits. Freedom will be at home Tuesday against West Caldwell, will again play at home Wed. against Shelby before hitting the road at Hibriten Thursday and at West Wilkes Saturday. Nostradamus, I had the privilege of watching Burnham pitch in many games last summer while he was playing for the Charlotte Legion Post. True he is not a Woodard or Tilley, but he is a very good pitcher. He held his own against a number of very good teams. He also came in to pitch in a couple of tight jams that should have rattled him, but didn't. He does not have the "mound time" that some of the 1 and 2 starters have, but given that he does a great job.

That's good enough for me gonzo ....

Pitching is more about composure, poise and concentration....

You may need the great form and fantastic speed to reach the next level as a pitcher, but you can be an excellent HS pitcher with the 3 above attributes if you are throwing strikes....

Why Hopewell lifted Josh Bush (probably). This was Hopewell's first game. They had also been limited to 1 brief scrimmage. I believe the game plan was to get all pitchers a little work. Before the rains came, it was probably a 3 inning/3 inning/2 inning schedule. Once they arrived, I believe both teams agreed to make it a 5 inning game.

The other pitchers still needed the work, thus the quick "hook" on someone who was throwing effectively.

Bush throws strikes and gets people out....usually. Like any HS pitcher, he has his off games. When he is hitting his spots, he can be VERY effective. Being able to work ahead of the hitters in that horrible slop ... he was to be commended for his approach, concentration and game preparation.

I really like both teams. Both MP & Hopewell will be dangerous to play this year. Hopewell puts the ball in play, has some power in their line up and has a very good bench. They started 7 seniors & 2 juniors. Their bench is one of the trump cards they will be able to play this year. They can present you will some very difficult match-ups.

Myers Park looks to be a little more spread out, grade-wise between seniors, juniors and others. Myers Park has the better pitching staff, but once you get beyond 2 games a week, it's a challenge for everyone.

I would have liked to see all of the game .... I would also like to have not gotten a cold from attending it..... o well.

Craig did not want to play with a bunch of guys he did not know. And I can't say I blame him for that. But once he came out, found out that all of those Myers Park guys were just like those East Meck guys, who really appreciated a player of his talent coming to join them despite his misgivings, he was welcomed with open arms. As I remember, it took him about two innings of his first game to become one of the regulars. Craig may not get the press other "stars" get, but you will not find a finer young man playing the game in Mecklenburg County.

I couldn't agree more with you all that craig is a fine young man and a great all around athlete and ball player but I stand by my original opinion that he is not a pitcher. Craig is one of the best outfielders in the SW4A and an above average hitter but the only reason he is on the mound is because of EM's lack of pitching. Craig is a thrower, not a pitcher. He doesn't have the mechanics or experience necessary to be a dominant HS pitcher. He will fare well against weaker opponents but strong hitting teams such as providence will mash him. I hope that I'm wrong because craig really is an upstanding guy but that's just my opinion.

Hopefully, fans will "remember" that these are all young men out there playing this game, and young men (just like professionals) will make mistakes. Anybody else remember Lonnie Smith's baserunning blunder in the 1991 World Series? Things like that happens, its a part of the game. Nobody drops a ball or strikes out "ON PURPOSE". And "NO ONE SINGLE PLAY" determines the outcome of the game. Fans only remember the last inning, but the errors early in the game "WERE JUST AS CRUCIAL" to the outcome. Actually, from what I've heard, the Kannapolis team seems to be pretty talented this year, although they may not have a lot of seniors. Sounds like a fun young team to follow this year in which the future is promising in Ktown.

North Meck started a little slow but pulled out a victory against East Gaston. Tom Porter (05) started and had difficulty with his control in the first inning. 2 HBP and a single loaded the bases with no one out. 2 batters later, the inning was over with just one run scoring.

The bats of NM woke up in the 2nd inning and kept on coming. The scoreboard counted 9 hits, but I counted 10. Some sharply hit ground balls also forced 5 infield errors by East Gaston.

Mike Cavasinni (05) & John Kellett (05) provided the early offensive punch with Andy Keith also getting two clutch singles. 2-out rallies in the 2nd & 3rd plated 4 runs. East Gaston also plated a unearned run in the 5th.

East Gaston ran through about 4-5 pitchers, as NM continued to put the ball in play hard. Porter lasted through 6, allowing 2 ground ball hits and a double in 6 innings, walking 1. Matt Murphy (03) came relieved in the 7th, retiring all 3 batters in order.

Leading hitters for NM: John Kellett 2-4 2 doubles, Tom Porter 2-4 1 double, Andy Keith 2-3

Stopped by Salisbury HS to watch the 2A Hornets take on 1A West Davidson today. Both teams are fairly young with only 4 seniors on either team.
Salisbury sent righty Adam Butler(05) to the hill and after giving up a 3 run homer to C Michael Rummage(03) went on to strike out the side and breeze through the next 2 innings with the help of 2 outstanding defensive plays from CF P.J. Brant(03) and SS Rick Daily(03). Butler was lifted in the 4th without getting an out in favor of Michael Yost(05) who preceeded to pitch shut out ball over the next 12 outs, giving up 1 hit and striking out 7. I hated to see Butler lifted before he had pitched enough to get the win, but I think the coach did the right thing after walking 1 batter and giving up 3 consecutive singles.
West sent freshman Tim Peele(06 righty) to the mound and despite walking 2 and giving up a run scoring double to Zach Glass(05) looked pretty good. One of those walks went to diminutive Salisbury lead off man Kendall Mowery who collected 5 on the night and scored 3 times. The second inning proved disasterous when Salisbury's bats came to life and exploded for 8 runs before relief pitcher Dillon Avery(05,lefty) could shut them down. Avery pitched well over the next 2 innings untill the 5th when the Hornets tallied 5 more runs.
On a defensive note: Salisbury catcher Phillip Hilliard(06) threw out all runners attempting to steal and picked off 1 at 1st. He's a good sized kid with a strong arm and a good left hand swing with the bat. Pop times are about 2.10-2.20. But get this guys, HE"S A LEFTY!!!! Sounds like a good topic to open a thread about.

As bad as Kannapolis looked last night vs N. Rowan, they really came out to play tonight w/o Daniel Smith. Mead was strong on the mound, and the bats were smoking. They still made too many errors in the field, but were able to keep them from hurting this game. Knapp scored 7 (I think) in the second inning, and SR never made a bid to get back in it.

Ashbrook defeated Mt. Tabor tonight 7-6.

Wes McCall ('04) started on the mound for the Greenwave. McCall pitched 4 innings: 6K's, 1BB, 4 hits, 0 runs. The score was 5-0 Ashbrook when McCall was relieved by Josh Duncan ('05).

Duncan pitched well for 2 innings, even with 3 errors committed behind him allowing 3 unearned Mt. Tabor runs. Duncan started the 7th but suddenly developed control problems. Mt. Tabor scored three more runs, all earned, before Steve Klenovic ('04) came in to record the final out.

The line on Duncan: 2K's, 1BB, 1hbp, 5 hits, 6 runs (3 unearned).
The line on Klenovic: 1K, 1BB, 1 hit, 0 runs.

Offensively, Ashbrook out hit Mt. Tabor 13-8. The two blast of the evening came in Ashbrook's bottom half of the first inning. Drew Martin ('05), hitting in the 3-hole, belted a two run homer over the centerfield fence, followed by a solo shot by McCall in almost the exact same spot. Ashbrook hasn't seen a "back to back" in years. Altogether, about 8 Ashbrook players had hits.

Ashbrook: 7-13-5
Mt. Tabor: 6-8-1

Per "The Salisbury Post",,,,, Andrew Mead pitched 5 strong innings to lead Kannapolis to a 9-2 win over their big nonconference rivals South Rowan this past Tuesday in local high school baseball action. South Rowan had started the season with a big victory over East Rowan; however, the Wonders delivered a big knockout blow in the 2nd inning of this game which proved to be the deciding factor. Leading hitters for the Wonders with 2 hits apiece were Brett Bartles, Andrew Mead, Eddie Boger and Garrett Sherrill. One of Boger's hits was a homerun which was apparently during the decisive 2nd inning for Kannapolis. Brett Stirewalt led South Rowan with 2 hits of his own. Both teams now stand at 1-1 overall.

Key note for Wonder fans to remember: Kannapolis started only one senior in this game and had as many as 4 sophomores playing. The Wonders are young, but talented,,,, they will make mistakes, but they will have good days too,,,, and their time is coming...

West senior Paul Link(03,LHP) took the hill for the Falcons(1-0) and pitched 3 strong, scoreless innings before giving way to Patrick Adams(04,RHP) to start the 4th. Adams pitched well over the next 2 innings dispite giving up the lone unearned run to the Cavaliers(1-1) in the 5th. Chris McDanial pitched a scoreless 6th and Daniel Cauble pitched a perfect 7th.

North's only score came when Travis Conner singled to right in the 5th and eventually scored on a passed ball.

North sophomore Brett Moulkey(RHP), after a shakey 1st, pitched strong into the 4th before being relieved by Justin McIntyer(LHP). Moulkey still looked pretty strong, so I believe he was pulled on a pitch count. McIntyer looked equally as strong dispite giving up a line drive HR to Link that just cleared the RF fence.

West scored in the 1st after Luke Overcash(04) led off with a walk and later scored on a double steal with Brian Graham(04) who had reached 1st on an error. Graham then scored on a HR deep to LF by Seth Waller(04).

The Vikings put on a impressive show tonight at North Meck in beating the previously unbeaten Butler Bulldogs by a score of 9 to 0. Sam Pierce pitched 5 strong no-hit innings and Benji Sheehan came in to close out the final 2 innings. 10 hits powered the Viking offense with Nossel, Skidmore and Proffit all delivering key 2 out base hits to score runners. The Vikings now await the arrival of the Hopewell Titan team on Tuesday 3/11/03 at home. This should prove to be a key game for both teams. :D

It is no surprise to me on the start of the NM Vikings. Coach King has and will continue to accomplish many things for North's program. He will have his hands full this year with the youth, but they have great talent and if he can keep them playing as a team they should do fine. It is Hopewell's turn this year to have the pressure North had last year, and it would come at no surprised if North wins one of the regular season games. My Advice to the North players is play very relaxed, but play hard.

Winning pitcher for EH was Vance Meno, went 7 giving up 4 earned runs and 9 hits, 2 k's, 5BB. The losing pitcher for Tuscola was Eric McConnell. This was opening MAC conference game for both teams. For EH, Clay Byrd and Chris Romeo had 3 hits each and Zach Cooper had 2.
With the score tied 3-3 going into the topp of the 7th, EH lit up McConnell for 4 runs. East Henderson is a quality senior laden team. Has the potential to beat anyone on any given day.

Eryk Mcconnell was not the losing pitcher he give up no earn runs, John shannon took the loss but he only give up 2 hits. Tuscola lost early last year and then went on 17 game winning streak. West Rowan 9 Kannapolis 7

A pair of 3 run homeruns by Ryan Petty and Brett Bartles of Kannapolis was not enough against the 13 hits and 9 runs of the Falcons.
Petty's dinger came at the expense of winning pitcher Patrick Adams in the 1st after a single and a walk. Bartles touched up relief pitcher Daniel Cauble in the 6th after a single and a hit batsman. Paul Link recovered from a ringing double from loosing pitcher Andrew Mead to record the save. Jeremiah Worthington talled the other score for the Wonders driving in Garret Sherrill in the 4th.
West's big inning came in the 3rd when they scored 4 runs on 5 consecutive hits, capped by a 2 RBI double by Seth Waller and a 2 RBI single by Ryan Wilson. rcbbfan, Congratulations to West Rowan on winning last nights game against the Wonders. We knew going in that West has a very fine ballclub and you truly do. We at Kannapolis are young this year but we will not use that as an excuse. Our young guys will be playing every night to win and I'm proud of the way that they fought a very strong West Rowan team last night.

Good Luck to both clubs the rest of the way...

p.s. The pitching of Adams and Link were the difference, in my opinion. Our guys were able to hit the ball, but we had WAY too many stikeouts. Hats off to your pitchers.

Yes, this was a very big win for the Kannapolis baseball program. It had been a long time since Kannapolis beat Central Cabarrus in HS baseball. Concerning the game, 3 Kannapolis pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter, led by Brett Bartles who pitched the first 5 innings. Bartles also led off the game with a homerun. Eddie Boger led the Kann offensive with 3 hits, followed by Ryan Query with 2 hits. Kannapolis defense looked great. This young Kann team continues to improve, and was CLEARLY the better team on this night.

West Rowan over Kannapolis 9-7 (Mon.March 10). The pitching of West probably proved to be the difference in this game over the young Wonders. Patrick Adams started this game for WR and Paul Link finished,,, and they both proved that WR is both experienced and talented on the mound. WR pitchers had 16 Wonder K's during this game which proved to be the difference, because Kann actually had chances, but were unable to move runners. Both teams ended up with 12 hits apiece. West was led by Patrick Adams, Wade Moore, S.Graham and Ryan Wilson with 2 hits apiece. Kannapolis was led by Garrett Sherrill with 3 hits, followed by Daniel Smith, Ryan Query and Andrew Mead with 2 hits apiece. Brett Bartles and Ryan Petty both homered for Kannapolis. Overall, this young Kannapolis team seems to be improving and gaining much confidence. Good Luck to both teams until we meet again...

Facchinei in a junior that is actually our number 3 behind Pridmore and Rose. Lol, a few more outings like this though and he might slide up with Rose on the shelf for a couple of weeks with some slight tendinitis. Facchinei is 6'2", 175 and appears to still be growing some. He may be a better 3rd baseman than a pitcher. Great hands. I look for him to be hitting 88 on the gun come May.

The Hopewell Titans with Andrew Cruse (03) on the mound faced the young North Meck team behind Tom Porter (05). The game was tightly fought.

North Meck jumped on top in the bottom of the 1st inning, plating 3 runs behind some clutch hitting and great speed. Hopewell answered with a run in the 2nd. North added a run in the 4th inning for a 4-1 lead. In the top of the 6th inning, Hopewell plated 2 un-earned runs bringing the contest to a tight 4-3 matchup going into the 7th inning. Sam Pierce (05) relieved Tom Porter in the 7th and closed out the inning without allowing a hit on 1 BB.

Key hitting and defensive plays for North were by Dustin Skidmore (03) CF with a great catch in right-center and a key double in the first inning (2 for the game). Michael Cavasinni (05) used his speed to plate the first run and make several fine catches in LF. Tom Porter allowed only 4 hits in 6 innings and fielded his position very well.

Hopewell had strong hitting by Daniel Woodall (04) Catcher and Austin Haines (03) Outfielder.

Game Talleys:
North Meck 8 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned runs
Hopewell 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned run

Winning Pitcher: Tom Porter (3-0)
Save: Sam Pierce(1-0), 2 Saves

The North Mecklenberg Varsity team pulled a major upset tonight in beating the Hopewell Titans and their ace pitcher Andrew Cruse. The score 4 to 3. Tom Porter logged 6 strong innings for the win and Sam Pierce had a save with a one inning relief stunt. Dustin Skidmore was the hero for North in not only driving in 2 runs with 2 doubles but also made a late inning defensive gem in center field which probably saved the game. West managed to score 4 runs in the top of the 7th and hold on to win their 2nd conference game in 2 days.

While North's Charles Taylor was in complete control for 6 innings, West starter Chris McDaniel depended on the help of his defense, who turned 2 rally killing double plays to keep the game close.

For 6 innings Taylor(RHP) pitched near perfect before running out of gas in the 7th. After giving up 2 walks he was lifted in favor of Steven Hancock who suffered control problems. After hitting a batter to load the bases, 1 run scored on a pass ball. He loaded the bases again by walking the the next batter and senior Shane Graham greeted him with a Texas League single that scored 2 runs. Wade Moore later drove in the 4th run with a sac fly to deep center field.

In the meantime North touched McDaniel(RHP) for 6 hits one being an RBI single to Bryan Corbett. After getting 2 outs in the 5th McDaniel was relieved by Paul Link who recorded the win, but not before Hancock tripled and later scored on an error.

What can I say but--- OUCH!!! This one hurts. Of course I should give Lake Norman credit,,, and I do. But Kannapolis came out after a big West Rowan game and we were about as flat FLAT FLAT as a team can be. I'm not recognizing any Kannapolis names in this one, because honestly the whole team just looked flat!!! The pitcher for Lake Norman was advertised to be good, but he did nothing special. We just hit one popup after another. Lake Norman scratched across one run in the first inning and this ugly game remained 1-0 forever. Then in the 4th inning, 2 different Kannapolis pitchers lost the strikezone and starting walking Wildcats. With so many baserunners, a dink here and a dink there, the score jumped to 7-0 after the 4th. Kannapolis really never hit the ball hard, except for a 2-run homerun by one of the sophomores in the 6th inning. Losing this game really hurts this young group we have in Wonderland. They will have to regroup FAST. We have East Meck today at home, and fortunately its a nonconference game, because right now we need to get our heads back on straight. Ahsbrook 17, Burns 12

Ashbrook should have won this game going away, but credit the Bulldogs, "quit" ain't in their vocabulary!

Ashbrook Scored early and often behind the hitting of Wes McCall (4-4, 2hr, 2b, 5rbi), Sammy Asis (3-5, hr, 3rbi) and Kale Bradley (2-2, 3rbi). After 3 innings the score was 15-4, with Michael Maples on the mound for the Greenwave.

With a comfortable lead, Ashbrook went to Asis to start the 4th inning. Asis has not pitched so far this season and was rudely roughed up by the Bulldogs, including a gradslam (not sure of the batter). Steve Klenovic came in to close the inning with the score 15-9. Klenovic was touched for a Burns dinger in the 5th and eventual closer, Michael Bogaert also gave up a HR in the 7th. Ashbrook added a score in the 6th and 7th, giving the final score of 17-12.

Altogether, there were 29 runs, 30 hits and 6 HR in the game!

Breece went 1-4 with a HR for Vance.

Vance jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but Harding came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Vance again took the lead in the top of the 3rd and held Harding at bay until the bottom of the 4th when Harding wrestled it away to take a 4-3 lead. The West Rowan Falcons continued their struggle with their bats and got little help from South Rowan pitchers, Andrew Morgan(LHP) and Cody Wright(LHP), as South upended West.

Morgan, at times, seemed to breeze through the West line up with a good moving FB and CB. His only real trouble came in the 6th inning when a misguided CB nipped Patrick Adams, who later scored on an error.

Meanwhile, South hitters made quick work out of inexperienced West pitcher, Peter Allen, who was relieved after 5 batters, 2 of which scored on a single by Gabe Beaver off reliever Wade Moore. Moore, a sophomore, then settled in and pitched well before giving up RBI singles to Morgan and Patrick Atwell in the 4th. St. Stephens jumped on Scott Hall for 3 runs in the first inning before being pulled in the 2nd. Matt Payne came in and pitched the 2-5 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 8 hitters. Hefner threw the 7th giving up 2 unearned runs and striking out 3. Michaels pitched for Stephens going the distance giving up 1 run and striking out 2.

Bartles is fine, his arm was bothering him so the coaches switched him from the mound to 1B. If he was truly hurt, he would've came out of the game completely. He'll be fine. The Ktown boys now get a well-deserved rest after playing 3 straight days. Hopefully this team will continue to mature and get better. Yes its "Wonder"ful having 4 sophomores starting and playing as much as they are,,, and actually all 4 of them are doing well too. But I'm hoping the older guys will carry this team with their leadership and experience. Its always good to see Smith and Petty step up and get big hits like they did tonight. This team can still make a lot of noise in the NPC and win a lot of ballgames despite 2 early conference losses. I don't think opposing teams know our guys and therefore opposing teams don't know what to expect from our guys either. I'd just like to see us get some consistency,,,, we can't continue stinking up the place like we did at Lake Norman,,,, and then the next day we're getting 12 hits off of Patrick Adams/Paul Link. We have a talented and fun team to watch,,,,, it should be interesting....

This game was a make-up from a previous rain-out. It was scheduled to begin at 6:30, but should have been scheduled as beginning "when the umps got through with a prior commitment at a JV game". The game got off to a late start (7:30 or so) and seemed to last forever.

Both teams experimented with the line-ups, the game being a non-conf matchup. The bats were swinging and both teams were hitting the ball sharply. The difference in the game was the speed of North Meck, who turned bunts into base hits and executed good agressive offense repeatedly during the night.

The pitchers for North Meck:

Benji Sheehan (04) started, last 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits & 4 BB while getting 4 K's.

Matt Murhpy (03) came in as the reliever in the top of the 4th inning with 2 out and the bases packed. He got NM out of the jam.

The line on Murphy:
3 1/3 innings pitched, 2 runs, both earned, on 3 hits, 0 BB, 1 HBP getting 6 K's.

North Meck trailed early, allowing East Gaston to jump out to a 2-0 lead, but ignited a 5 run rally in the bottom of the 2nd, establishing a lead they never surrendered.

Neither team was as sharp defensively as you would have liked. The standout player on the field tonight was Jay McConnell, (04) catcher for East Gaston. He was impressive at & behind the plate.

Key offensive contributions from new players:
Craig Williams (04) LF: Batting lead-off
Blake Epps (04) 2B: key hits and great contact
Dan Portone (04) RF: Solid contributor offensively & defensively
Ben Sherrill (04) C: Solid behind the plate and delivered at the plate.

Final Score: NM 10, East Gaston 7

Oldguycoach: I must admit that the young varsity squad at NM has exceeded my expectations. I knew this school was going to be loaded with talent after seeing many of these players compete against each other over the last 5-7 years. It is great to see these young men play for the same team fianally. All the years of good coaching by people such as yourself, Mr. Porter and Mr. McAuley are paying off big for these young talented players. Thanks to you and all the other coaches in the North side of Mecklenburg county who have donated your time and talents with these players. The next two to three years are going to be fun for North Meck baseball fans!!!

Providence 2, Waddell 1

Prov. didn't hit well but used four solid pitchers-Clay, Mason, Hilfiger, Jones. Jones came in in the 7th with score at 1-1. With 2 out, Deitrich on 3rd, McCurdy walks & keeps going to 2nd. Cathcer throws down to second, Deitrich comes home, Providence wins. Credit Horniak with some crafty coaching.

The young man from Waddell, #5, threw a very nice game & their fielders made some nice plays. They deserve credit as well for a good ball game.

After a slow start, West Meck could become a power in the Meca8 this season. They've been playing well lately which is hard to do in all this rain. Good job guys.

Is the score above the 3/12 game or did they play a 2nd time??

North Meck at Independence

Zack Ferry did a nice job for Independence on the mound. He had some pop on his fastball early and kept the NM hitters off-balance for most of the game. Regardless, Sam Pierce matched him pitch for pitch through most of the game with North pushing over 2 early runs. Matt Murphy came on in relief of Pierce in the 6th with 2 outs and ended the threat that inning.

We North leading 2-0, with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, Indy had a runner reach on error, followed by a double. With runners at 2nd & 3rd with 2 outs, North gave an IBB to the next batter to load the bases.

1 Wild Pitch later, with the score 2-1, Independence hit a 3-run homer to complete the comeback and grab the victory 4-2.

When the fields dry, the batting practice resumes, both of these teams look to continue to improve on what could be a great rivalry this season. Both teams looked very good at most times, and will give other teams in the Meca8 fits this season.

Special Note: Sam Pierce has now completed 18 Innings of work this season without allowing a single run (of any type).

Congrats to Indy on the victory.

Continuation of game started wednesday. The game resumed with the beginning of the 4th inning.

The score 1-0 in favor of West Meck. North Meck sophomore T. Porter set the early tone for the game by striking out the side in the 4th ... North scored and took a 2-1 lead late into the game. West Meck pushed over an unearned run in the top of the sixth on a single, their only hit of the day and an error by the defense. The game continued without any score with both pitchers battling out on the mound. After squandering many scoring opportunities, North pushed over a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th for the 3-2 victory.

Porter was in control most of the day, striking out 14, walking 1 and allowing 1 single for the 7 innings played today. The West Meck pitcher battled strong the entire game, pitching the complete 7 innings today and pitching around base runners repeatedly and effectively for most of the game.

Both pitchers started the game on wednesday and completed it today, going 10 innings each. In total for the game, Porter struck out 16, allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run.

THIS WAS AN EXCITING GAME TO WATCH.....

The West Meck 9 Hunter Huss 3 game was the 3/12 game. The pitcher for West Meck against North Meck was Zach Butler. He's pitched great for us this year but has had tough luck losing 4-1 to East Meck, 5-0 to South Meck, 1-0 to Independence, and 3-2 against North Meck. Three of his four losses are against top teams in the county and we have had a chance to win any one of those games because of his pitching.

Ashbrook 13 East Lincoln 0

This was a makeup of Tuesday's rainout.

W. McCall started on the mound for Ashbrook and left after the 3rd inning with a 9-0 lead. McCall gave up two hits, 1bb, 6k's. M. Bogaert pithced a scoreless 4th and M. Maples completed the shutout pitching the 5th. Ashbrook is now 5-1, 1-0.

Even after what seems like a month of rain, the Ashbrook bats showed no sign of the layoff. Ashbrook scored 2 runs in the first and exploded in the third. The backbreaker of the day was a grand salami by DH Clay Gibson.

According to the stats recorded in yesterday's Gaston Gazette, Ashbrook has 6 starters hitting over .350!

Next up, a very important conference matchup with pre-season favorite South Point visiting Ashbrook at 7:00, Tuesday 3/25.

This is a reply to your question Braves. (from week 4 scores since it is closed now)...

Errors were not the story of saturday afternoon. Providence's offense on the other hand was. You gotta tip your hats to a team that plays the game with that kind of agression. In all aspects they were aggressive. They clearly had an approach and carried it out. It did not matter to them who they were playing, who was in the stands, or what they had done in previous games. They were completely locked in.

The mistakes that were made in the field were in no way the determining factor of the outcome. They are only an example as to how passive and timid the Mustangs were in entireity that day. On Saturday, the Panthers were the better team.

Every team must face and work through adversity at some point. What seperates the good and the great teams is the great team will learn and become better from it immediately. The good team will point a finger, instead of making the needed adjustment(s).

I tip my hat to Providence...redemption starts today with Garinger.

This game was as good as advertised, great pitching match up and well played by both teams with Northwest coming from behind, scoring 4 runs in the final 2 frames to take the win. Northwest scored first when winning pitcher Lucas Dalton doubled in Nolan Patterson(3-4, 2 runs) who had lead off the game with a base hit.
West charged back in the 2nd with a RBI double by Wade Moore(2-3, dbl, HR, 2 RBI,2 runs) and a 2 run HR by Paul Link.
Northwest struck again in the 3rd when Patterson again scored on a ball that careemed of 3rd baseman Seth Waller and sailed into short left field.
Moore's solo HR in the 4th made 4-2, but Northwest wasn't through, scoring 3 times in the 6th when Michael Hamilton(2-4, run) reached on a FC, Jerod Faggart doubled, and Jonathan Hamby singled them both in and later scored on a Dalton sac fly. NW scored again in the 7th when Blake Ketner rushed home on an errant pickoff throw by West reliever, Link.

i think east meck proved alot of the doubters wrong this week by winning two big games. They beat Providence 3-0 and got a stellar pitching performance for zach fulginiti. And tonight they beat South Meck 3-2, and again got a stellar pitching performance from ben buchanan, and got clutch pitching by craig burnham in the bottom innings. They play butler friday i think. so that should be a good game. i think these two big wins gave the team some confidence and momentum. keep up the good work fellas!

Ashbrook 13
South Point 2

Ashbrook (6-1, 2-0) brought our it's sticks again last night. A good article in the Gazette today by Richard Walker, who by the way, attended the entire ballgame and stayed for interviews.

To summarize, Coach Parks says this is the "best offensive club he's had in 12 years". Even better than when Wes Helms was leading the ballclub. 1-9 can hit the ball and 7 can hit it out. Plus there is good depth on the bench. This about a club that only has one senior starter. Ashbrook's current run production is 11.4 runs per game. The state record for a season is 11.6 by St. Paul's in 1991. St. Paul scored 330 runs in 28 games.

Last night the 8,9, and lead-off hiiters provided the juice. Sammy Asis, jr., hit his third HR of the year. Michael Bogaert, so., and Josh Duncan, so., both had two hits. All this with Wes McCall falling into a "slump" going 0/2 with 2 bbs. This ended McCall's 10 consecutive hit streak and dropped his season avg. to .682.
At last check, Ashbrook had 6 players hitting over .350.

McCall picked up his fourth win of the season (4-0) and was not very pretty in doing it, giving up 2 runs, on 5 hits, 4bb, 2 hbp and 8k's. The defense however was stellar, led by Drew Martin, so., who was playing second last night, and Asis in CF.

This afternoon, North Meck visits Ashbrook for an old Mega 7 4A rematch. These two young teams should play a great game. Game time 7:00.

A little background 1st. This was a game that was looked forward to with a lot of local interest as these 2 cross town rivals hadn't played in 2 years. These kids had grown up together and and played with and against each other since pee wee leagues. The 2 teams comprised of 10 seniors, 5 on each team, that had gone to the Babe Ruth World Series (placing 4th) as 12 yr olds. Needless to say it was a great atmosphere with a great crowd.
East Henderson
0-0-0-1-1 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 error
West Henderson
3-0-0-7-2 12 runs, 11 hits, 0 errors
WP Mike Facchinei (3-0) 11k's, 2 ER, 5 hits, 2 BB
LP Shawn Gibson 2 k's, 6 ER, 6 hits, 7 BB

1st inning:
East Henderson - Facchinei had 3 k's wrapped around a walk to Gibson and a single by Chris Romeo.
West henderson - A walk to Kevin Allen to lead off the game, then back to back singles from Facchinei and Mitchel Pridmore to score Allen. A sacrifice fly from Kemper Booth to score Facchinei. Gibson had 2 more walks this inning with Pridmore scoring on a wild pitch.
2nd inning:
East Henderson - Facchinei struck out the side.
West henderson - Allen walked this inning and Facchinei moved him to 3rd with a single with 1 out. As Facchinei was stealing 2nd Allen broke for home and was caught at the plate when the SS cut the throw. Note: Tampa Bay scout clocked Allen 2.45 from 3rd to home on this play.
3rd inning:
East Henderson - Facchinei struck out the 1st 2 batters then there was a gounrd out to 3rd.
West Henderson - Gibson struck out 2 this inning around a single from Curtis Frisbee.
4th Inning:
East Henderson - Got the bats going a little scoring a run on 2 hits and a BB. Gibson and Teague Halford had the hits.
West Henderson - Rocky Guthrie started off the inning with a double. Then Gibson struggled a little walking 3 in a row to leave bases loaded for Pridmore who hit a grand slam. EH changed pitchers at this point bringing in Hill. Hill hit Booth who moved to 2nd on a past ball. Josh Andrews moved him to 3rd with a gound ball to the right side then Frisbee walked. Frisbee was caught stealing before Cory Rose hit a 2 run HR.
5 inning:
East Henderson - Hill led off with a double. Facchinei struck out the next batter before giving up another double to Clay Byrd. Gibson k'd and Romeo popped up to end the inning.
West Henderson -
Allen and Facchinei had single to start the inning. Pridmore had a Sac fly to score Allen. Andrews had a single to move Facchinei into scoring postition where Frisbee drove him in with a single to end the game.

Facchinei is having a break out year. This junior P/3B is now 3-0 going 15 innings, with 34 k's, 8 hits and 3 walks, giving up 2 ER. Hit 88 on the striker gun in this game with a nasty 12-6 curve ball. He is also 7-7 in the last 2 games at the plate. Kevin Allen-OF, Curtis Frisbee-1B/OF, and Brooks Owenby P/3B, (3 unsigned seniors) are hitting .632, .556, and .524 respectively through 7 games. Pridmore, Booth, and Rose had already signed.

Zack Rosenbaum made the move up from JV to Varsity last week and had his first 2 outings with North Meck.

He came in to relieve Sam Pierce in the 4-3 victory over Harding, picking up his first save on tuesday. He got his first start thursday against West Charlotte.

The lanky righty was in control of all of his pitches and the game for the entire evening. He worked 6 smooth innings and settled in very nicely on the mound. In his 6 innings of work, he struck out 9, walked 2, allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run. Great outing for the young sophomore. He looks to be the last piece of the puzzle for this season on the mound for the Vikings and is a most welcome addition to the team.

Even without Rosenbaum on JV the past 2 weeks, the JV team remains undefeated. The next 2 years looks VERY good for North Meck baseball.

The story for this game was pitching, pitching, pitching, and 2 HR.

Both Paul Link(WR) and Tyler Lackey(Moores) pitched superbly, nearly matching each other inning after inning until the 6th when Lackey caught a little too much of the plate and West 3rd baseman Seth Waller drilled it over the left field fence. Lackey made only one other mistake when he got a change up up and in to West freshman Wade Moore, in the 7th, who promptly rainbowed it down the right field line and over the fence just fair. Bryan Graham had 2 hits.

Intimidator Coach, that's a good win for the Wonders and an equally tough loss for the Mustangs. I hear that Smith aggrivated that ham string muscle again. Is it bad enough to keep him out of the games? The best thing is to let it rest for a while, but I'll bet he won't want too. It's tough for a senior to have to sit on the bench and watch when he knows that he needs to be out on the field.

I had the pleasure of watching this game. rc is correct about the pitching. The HR given up in the 6th wasn't a mistake pitch. It was outside, below the knees. The batter just went down and got it. The only mistake pitch that wasn't gotten away with all game was ther hanger in the 7th. By this point, both hurlers were at or right above 100 pitches for the game. But both looked strong.

I was impressed by Link (03) and his ability to move the ball. He worked the corners all game, throwing in what I guessed to be the low-mid 80's. He had great movement on all his pitches and, as the saying goes "an inch of movement is worth 3 mph. If that's the case, he was a cool 97-98 without effort :D that's how much movement he was getting.

Lackey (04) was impressive in his own right. He is more of a power guy, consistently in the mid-80's. He can challenge hitters and doesn't back down. I liked him a lot on the mound, but he was tipping his change occasionally. This is something you grow with, and his curve was working well. He could be a dominate force in the NPC next year.

Both shortstops impressed me. They were lightening fast, had soft hands, were very agressive and had great footwork.

Behind the plate, Ryan Wilson for WR compares very favorably to Jay McConnell. If anything, he is an even better receiver. You don't even have to be a baseball fan to be able to tell in 1 inning that Wilson has great, soft hands and an outstanding release to 2nd. He handles pitchers very well, communicates well, frames well and is a natural leader. The only base-stealer in the game was gunned with room to spare. At the plate, McConnell is ahead right now, but where McConnell looks fully developed physically, you can see that Wilson hasn't begun to fill out yet. You couldn't go wrong with either catcher.

West Rowan is ahead of Mooresville at the plate. They just have more power. Mooresville can play in the states, but will struggle to score runs against the top pitchers, so they may not have a long run. West Rowan has the players to go deeper. I need to see their #1 guy before I will venture a guess as to how deep.

This was an outstanding game to watch.........great fun, even if you don't know any of the players on either team.

East Gaston 7
Ashbrook 2

Normally I try to post details immediately after a game, but on Friday after the East Gaston throttled Ashbrook, I drove to eastern NC to see some great baseball. Anyway, I want to give EG their props!

Jason Cline (Sr., Belmont Abbey signee) threw a superb game against the Greenwave. Cline keep hitters off balance with great location of his fastball, curve and change. Cline only allowed 5 hits and two of those came from Drew Martin. On the mound for Ashbrook was soph., Mike Maples. Although, Mapels scattered 7 hits, it was Ashbrook's defense that let down the young pitcher, allowing 5 unearned runs on 4-5 errors. Maples kept his composure and finished throwing a complete game. By far his best outing of the season.

East Gaston is now 3-0 in the Big South 3A, along with surprise North Gaston also at 3-0 in the conference. Ashbrook drops to 2-1 in the conference.

Andrew Mead pitched 5 strong innings for Ktown, with Robert Bowers and Ryan Petty finishing the 6th-7th innings respectively. Jacob Cooper started for East, but seemed to struggle with his control early. Cooper struggled through 4 innings although he actually had given up "only" 4 runs; however, Kannapolis hit East's next pitcher (won't mention his name) hard scoring 5 runs in the 5th inning to seal the game. Tyler Morgan came in as East's 3rd pitcher and pitched well to shut us down the last 2 innings.

Anyway, yes it was a big win for Kannapolis. Who can figure this team out? Four of our wins have come against very good 4A teams, and yet here we are with a 6-5 overall record. I know we're young, but we've got to get some consistency in order to make a run for that final playoff spot.

West Rowan 2 East Rowan 1

Another well pitched game by both pitchers. Winning pitcher Patrick Adams used a crackling FB mixed ocassionally with a sharp breaking CB to wiff 16 batters. Hard luck looser Jason Cauble pitched well enough to win most games but got little help in the way of offense.
West opened the scoring in the 1st when SS Bryan Graham singled to lead off the game, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and scored on an RBI ground out by 3rd baseman Seth Waller.
East struck back in the 4th when 2nd baseman Michael Gegorek doubled down the RF line(East's only hit), moved to 3rd on a balk, and scampered home on the back end of a double steal.
West's Ryan Wilson capped the scoring with a solo HR to lead off the 4th that cleared the trees in right/center.

Central locked down their spot on the top of the Meca 8 behind the 3-hit performance of Junior Brad Hinson. Hinson is now 3-0 in conference, CC is 7-0. North Meck's Tom Porter picked up his first loss of the season and is now 4-1.

Senior led Central Cabarrus, battled all night at the plate, fouling off pitches and driving up pitch counts. North Meck spend all night at the plate taking strikes. NM stranded base runners all night and CC kept pressure on the pitcher with their agressive hitting and play. In the cold weather, both pitchers were limited to pretty much Fast balls and curves and both had trouble at times keeping the FB down in the zone. Porter struck out 10 in 5 innings with 2 walks. Hinson piled up the K's also but had 4 BB in the first 2 innings and struggled with free passes during the game.

Zack Rosenbaum came in to relieve Porter in the 6th and was very effective, facing the minimum batters. He had excellent pop and continues to solidify his position as a key player on varsity for the future.

Hopefully, some of the CC folks will give us a run-down on the hitting for their crowd. For NM, there were 2 well struck balls all night, both by FRESHMAN catcher Robert Proffitt, and only one of those was a base hit.

o well.

Brett Bartles pitched 5+ shutout innings and Garrett Sherrill and Ryan Petty completed the shutout. Bartles pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning and pretty much cruised from there on before giving way to Sherrill with 2 outs and 2 on in the 6th. Ryan Petty drove in a run in the first with a doube to the wall in left. Drew Maher came up with a clutch 2-out RBI single in the 4th or 5th for the final tally. The pitcher from N. I (last name was Taylor) kept Knapp hitters off balance with a decent curveball a sneaky-fast fastball. Someone told me that N.I. starts 4 or 5 sophs, they could be a team to watch down the road. Daniel Smith DHed last night, but obviously wasn't running even close to 100%, and didn't push it on a groundout. Knapp plays South Point tonight 4/2 at 630 at home.

This game was tied 4-4 with the Wonders coming to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Jeremiah Worthington led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line and Andrew Mead singled Worthington home for the win. Drew Mahre pitched well for 5+ innings to lead the Wonders while Garrett Sherrill pitched well in relief over the final 2 innings for Ktown. Brett Bartles added a solo homer for the Wonders. Sorry I didn't get any names from the South Point players, but their pitcher (a lefty) pitched the complete game and pitched well.

We also seen the team concept of winning at all costs even if it means playing with injured players. All for a non conference win.

I was told that the score for the Olympic-Garinger game that was in the Observer Wednesday was not accurate. Coach Rhodes called in a lower score to try not to embarrass his opponent any more than was necessary. Pretty classy guy, IMO.

We had a LONG discussion on the board at the beginning of the season regarding the Garinger scores. It was decided to post the results in the summary thread as "over Garinger" instead of actually putting the score in. Most teams have willingly obliged us, only posting "reasonable" scores (with 1 or 2 exceptions).

And I agree with your assessment of Coach Rhodes behavior in this matter ..... first class!!

To further clarify this situation. The reported scores may and probably were provided by the Garinger coach who is also displaying a lot of courage and class by reporting scores that places his team in an unfavorable light.

It will remain our policy to report these scores as:

Winner over Loser without providing the actual score. If you feel tempted to post an actual score, expect your post to modified or deleted by the first moderator who sees it.

The players at Garinger play hard and respect the game. We will continue to respect their efforts. If the Observer in it's "infinite wisdom" desires to continue posting the scores in the newspaper, there is little we can do about it, other than set an example.

Davie County 4 West Rowan 3

Winning pitcher Tim Erb mixed his pitches well enough to keep West hitters off stride. Featuring a good CB and getting a generous strike zone Erb threw only 92 pitches in 7 innings.
Hard luck looser Chris McDaniel pitched well but suffered from a lack of offensive out put. Reliever Daniel Cauble also pitched well in his 2 innings of work.
Davie scored 3 runs in the 1st when Zach Vogler reached on a 2 base error, Aaron Hollifield walked, Ted Randolph singled in Vogler, and Andrew McClannon drove in Hollifield and Randolph with a single. Davie's other score came in the 4th when Drew Beck singled and later scored on another single by McClannon.
West scored in the 4th Luke Overcash singled, stole 2nd, stole 3rd and scored on a errant throw. In the 6th West scored when Bryan Graham singled, reached 2nd on a WP, to 3rd on a sac fly and scored on another errant throw to 3rd. Pinch hitter Brandon Bailey scored in the 7th after reaching 1st on a K/WP, went to 3rd on a base hit by Wade Moore and a sac fly by Daniel Cauble.

West pitcher, Paul Link, managed to work 5 strong innings dispite having suffered stomach problems earlier today. Although his FB was not as crisp as usual he kept hitters off stride with a good CB and change up. Peter Allen, after a shaky start, pitched well in his 2 innings of relief. Meanwhile West hitters feasted on North pitcher Jamie Hill. Hill threw strikes but found it difficult to keep the ball off West's bats. Steven Hancock relieved Hill with 2 outs in the 3rd and pitched well over the last 3 innings, facing the minimum number of batters.
West hitters, who have struggled of late, got the sticks going early, scoring 4 runs in the 1st. Bryan Graham doubled, Luke Overcash singled, and Seth Waller supplied the big blow with a 3 run HR. Patrick Adams singled and later scored on a RBI single by Wade Moore. Graham and Overcash both scored unearned runs in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Shane Graham and Link walked and scored on TBI singles by Chris McDaniel and Bryan Graham. McDaniel later scored on an RBI single by Waller.
North scored in th 6th when Steven Hancock drew a walk, was moved to 2nd by a walk to Colby Lewis, and came home on an RBI single by Bryan Corbett.

West pitchers, Patrick Adams, Bryan Aycoth, and Daniel Cauble, combined for 1 earned run over 5 innings to defeat the Raiders. Aycoth picked up his first varsity win. Of South's pitchers, Mike Davis, Cody Livengood, and Allen Bryant, only Bryant emerged un scathed as West bats came to life for the 2nd day in a row.
West scored in each of the 1st 4 innings giving Coach Chris Cauble the opportunity to play 17 players. In the 1st, Bryan Graham singled to lead off the game and was later driven in by Ryan Wilson's single. In the 2nd Paul Link drew a free pass, Chris McDaniel singled, and Luke Overcash walked which set the opportunity for Seth Waller the unload on a Mike Davis offering for his 2nd HR in 2 days, a grand slam. In the 3rd Wade Moore and McDaniel scored on a 2 RBI single by freshman 2nd baseman Garrett Hatley. West scored 4 more in the 4th on RBIs by Wilson, Adams, and McDaniel.
South's lone score came in the 4th when Andrew Morgan crushed a Aycoth CB over the LF fence.

I got this response ... I want everyone to know about this guy ... he can definitely hit at the next level ....

the # 3 hitter is Senior Justin Ridenhour, followed by Kyle Baker in the #4 slot who's also a pretty good natural hitter.

This game was a battle to the finish. Christian came out early with a 5-spot in the first inning. Fort Mill continued to put runs on the board here and there throughout the game. Charlotte Christian led 6-4 in the top of the sixth and Fort Mill scored two runs on two errors by Christian. Christian pulled everything together with a lead-off double by junior Zach Watson in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Carrara then followed Watson with another double down the third base line scoring Watson easily from second. Christian then led the game 7-6. Senior Brenden Stucky went in and closed the game out for his 5th save of the year. Michael Najaka, Christian's starting and winning pitcher, threw a phenominal game.

NPC Final Score...
NCBBALLFAN, don't ask me how they did it, but somehow West Rowan/Lake Norman managed to play yesterday and West won in 5 innings 13-0. I believe they intended to play a doubleheader due to an earlier rainout, but the 2nd game was suspended due to yesterday late afternoon rains...

I believe this is the results of a game that had been suspended earlier in the 3rd inning with WR up 7-0.

Christian is 3-0 in conference, with a sweep of Charlotte Latin. Losses out of conference coming against a very good Fort Mill H.S. team, Westminster Christian ( a top Florida Team ) and a post spring break flop against N.W. Guilford.
