I hope you don't mind me asking you this on the board.
Your son had a great career in HS. How is he doing now? Can you share a little bit about his transistion from HS to college?
Good question Braves. The change has been fairly smooth for him. I got lucky with a fairly good kid, who has been through alot with me (divorce, changing custody, moving, etc..) so he was fairly mature about the ways of the world. So he did not get to college and have traumas about "missing mommy and daddy". So his transistion to a life where he is "on his own" has been smooth. He had two real issues. The first was a roommate issue. I think there was too much ego in the same 9x14 room. These boys are all fairly spoiled, and suddenly having to share a closet with another boy can cause some problems. Fortunately, there was a vacant room next door and his roommate was allowed to move next door, problem solved. Today they are best buds again.
Secondly (and maybe MOST important), he found out what they meant by college conditioning. His coach told him during the summer that if he could make it through fall and winter conditioning without tossing his cookies he was in shape. Alas, he did not make it. He did not have a clue what a REAL workout program was. Of course to make matters worse, most of his workouts were senior teammate driven, so they had their change to "abuse the plebs". They were pushed unmercifully all fall. And when they were not out running distance or sprints, they were hitting the weights.
Study habits are an issue. Something these boys need to realize is most college professors have a bit of an attitude about athletes. He was a bit surprised when he got his midterm grades. Miss a worksheet here, a quiz there and suddenly your grades stink. And he was surprised that the professors did not pull him aside and counsel him on this. Surprise boys, you (or your parents) are paying to go to college. There is not state board working to make sure all students advance at the same pace. Studying, turning in your assignments (on time or at all), attending class, all of these things are on you. Mommy, Daddy, attendance monitor at school, these are all high school things. Find a teammate who has good study habits and hook up with them. Study, workout, run, study, play baseball, eat do laundry (that's right boys, you do your own laundry), sleep. You will sleep, see item number two.
Sorry Braves, little long winded, hope this helps. To recap, his transistion baseball wise has been fairly good. Coach likes him, still swings stick well, wants to DH him some this year, probably will not get a great deall of position playing time, will probably get some pitching time. (Yes, as it stands right now he may get a shot to be a two way player, alot depends on how hard he is willing to work). Hope this helps

What a terrific...and very honest...report!
You see it ALL the time. The high school star, whose innate abilities make him a standout in that environment, suddenly finds himself in the midst of a team of similar standouts...and they all find that the coach expects them to do SO much more than they ever dreamed of doing up until then. And, by the way, it is college, which expects college-level attention and quality in the classroom.
My money's on Gonzo's son to succeed in the transition. For those of you who are hoping to have the opportunity to confront the college baseball challenge one day, read Gonzo's post and know it to be the truth.
Wow...great reply Gonzo. Listen, you could have gone another ten pages and you wouldn't have lost my interest.
I'm happy for **** and you. He's a great kid and a terrific athlete. I can hardly wait to hear and (read) his accomplishments this Spring. Keep us posted
And thanks again for a terrific post!

Thought I was in pretty good shape..until I got to college! My freshman year was pretty tough. We ran and ran and ran some more. I thought I was running track instead of playing baseball. Had to break a 5 minute mile the first day of practice. If you dint do it, you ran it the next day and the next until you made it. I think it took me 15 tries to make it. I made it the first day my soph year!

Tell us about your college experience. Obviously, you were in a SEC program. What was that like for you? ..and where did you go to HS?

Gonzo, glad to hear that your son is doing well. I heard just this past weekend that his roommate is no longer in school. Is that true?
Papabear, sorry for the delay. I had to talk to my son, who told me his roommate is still there. And he said that since they are not roommates anymore they get along great.

hey "gonzo",
this is the tall guy who used to play with your son at his HS and who "left" to pursue other opportunities at another HS, yet still came back to watch "ALC" and ur son and some others kick butt last year!
i wanted to say hi! and to tell you that i hope ur son is doing great! we all know he will do awesome in college. and i also hope that you will be doing your old job at his hs this year so i can sit and talk with you at the games still...and so we can still use our funny little handshake!
like i said I hope that all is well with you and ur son! i look forward to seeing you this spring! and i hope you make it to one or two of "my games"! you know where to find me in the winter!
Welcome Tallguy...glad to have you aboard. We will be posting a basketball forum this week.

Hey tallguy, good to hear from you. He is doing well, working hard, really starting to get the swing of college life. Balance is the key. And yes, I am trying to get to a game or two, would love to see how much better you have gotten. And I will be hanging around "The Park" this spring, you know I can't stand not being around on the fringes. :D

He really is an outstanding player Gonzo. Quite honestly he is their best shooter, best inside player and best passer. Ideally, if South ran their plays through him, they would be a much better team. The best part of his skills is he sees the court so well. He is one step ahead of everyone else, which leads to turnovers, because they weren't ready for his pass...but that's on them. He's a terrific player!!

-The South Meck Varsity game with Harding will be played @ South Meck today @ 4:30 instead of @ Harding due to field conditions.
-The South Meck JV game with Harding scheduled for today has been postponed to a date to be announced at a later time.
-JVs will practice today @ South Meck.
Thank you for the timely update...I would have been the only one at harding waiting for the game to start

With Braves being the TBR reporter assigned to this game, I'll make sure that he provides a complete, detailed report or else we will lock him out of the concession stand.

NCBBall I would say based upon the time Braves is resting up before he goes to the game today for his reporting duties. You know it takes a lot of rest and hotdogs to report DETAILS as you have requested but if anyone is up to the challenge...it's ol BRAVES. Yes siree....he can pay attention to the details, work the concession stand, cook the hot dogs, coach the team from the sidelines, help the ump and say hello to everyone in the crowd. Thank goodness for the dome this year at least he doesn't have to run out to the mound and behind the plate with the dirt dry stuff during the tv time outs. Gives him more time to be "pursnable" while working the crowds. :xyzwave:

Glad to see you at the South Meck vs. Watauga game last Saturday. Thanks for your efforts to help keep the field dry when the Southdome would not roll out! The South JVs got their game in but the South Varsity just ran out of luck! The button on the Southdome got jammed on Saturday and that's probably the first time in a very, very long time that a game at South Meck has not been completed!
Come home to South, hoopster, every chance that you get!

BigRed,
Thanks first for the congrats on my game, and no we did not play saturday but we did have a good practice. We play Bunker Hill at home on tuesday (if anybody has anything on them feel free to talk about them) and then we host hickory at home on friday. I think i am pitching the hickory game. I think that our hitting will come around the big thing is just to get more and more hacks against live pitching. Because we have only taken battin practice on the feild 3 times all year and we didnt scrimmage at all because of all the rain.
thought I would bring this back to the top. Good reading and good info

I have heard and also read in the paper that they are doin really well this year, despite the loss of their seniors from last year. I read where Matt Teague and Joe Springs are pitching well, and that their leading hitters are Chase Ensley and Mitch Harris. Does anyone else know anything about them and the team this year?

South Point was everyone's pre-season favorite in the Big South 3A this season. Haven't heard anything to change that yet. Ashbrook may give them some problems, they have a lot of talent also. It may be a two-pony show over there.
South Points current record is 3-2, but those two losses come at the hands of Charlotte Christian. Anyone who has seen C.C. play won't hold those non-conf losses against them.

No -- it's actually what happens to any fan caught on that beautiful new turf in the BagDome. I had to pay to get in there in the 7th inning the other night (guess they got to pay for all that nice stuff somehow) -- but it was worth it just to see the place.

I guess the "Skyboxes for Sabres" sale isn't generating enough interest since Braves swiped the toasters..:anon:
This calls for a clarification, since my integrity has been called to question.
1. They only charged Dodgerblue because of his flaunting of Myers Park support. Riding up in the " Mustang" boat and parking it in front of the skyboxes is just not acceptable. Thus Dodger was fined $ 4 to get in...( notice Dodger, they did not charge your son).
2. The charge of swiping toasters hurt my feelings. Wachovia bank was considerate to donate 100 toasters. I didn't need 100 toasters, I only needed 10...so I gave the rest to the Booster club.
3. and NCBball fan...I have already tried to have some of my good friends at MP leave me tickets at will call. Here's how it went
" Hi ..I'm picking up tickets for Braves "
" No.."
" Ummm...I believe Gonzo left some for me "
" No.."
" Well..maybe it was MrebelP "
" No "
" RW.." " No" " DodgerBlue.." " NO "
" Well, you haven't even checked to see "
" NO!"
" Is that all you can say..No "
" No"
Well, I turned to walk away when I heard the ticket person say,
" and don't come back without my toaster "
Sheeesh..those Mustangs just aren't very friendly to Ol' Braves
PS- Oh...I will be there Friday, but incognito this time
AustinPowers, I was starting to "wonder" why Northwest Cabarrus wasn't getting any games in. I know Coach Hubbard has a very good team over there this year and I've just expected to see more about them in the paper "whupping up" on folks. A lot of teams already have 5-6 games in, while NW is still sitting on just 2 games. Anyway, good luck to the Trojans when they finally get rolling...
AUSTIN POWERS

Thanks Wufman.. Hopefully the long lay off want hurt the guys..Yes, coach Hubbard should have a good squad this year. "ITS TIME" for the Trojans to make some noise.
AustinPowers,,, good luck in your game today against East Rowan. The Mustangs lost a lot from last year's team, but they still have quality pitching and they have recently played some very good defense and got some good hitting too. Should be a very good game. Hopefully for you guys, Mr.Dalton will have his "A" game this afternoon...
