I went to the A.C. Reynolds at Erwin game today. Erwin is still trying to find themselves as pitching is still a problem. Jenelle Trifon pitched a "Perfect Game" for A.C. Reynolds. Go Nelli...
nelli (jenelle) also pitched for Blue Ridge Explosion last year. Congratulations Reynolds. Hang in there Erwin things will turn around. :smash:

North Buncombe 7 - Franklin 1

Erwin 8 - Tuscola 6...Erwin finally gets into the win column...Their sophomore pitcher Lauren West finally healed up enough to pitch for Erwin...4 innings with 1 earned run before she had reached her pitch count...Go Lauren....Also went 2 for 3 ...looks like her bat is coming alive as well...

Owen 13- Madison 5....word has it that the Davis kid did ok in this game too...3 for 5...Mallory Padgett picked up the win...also hit 2 for 4...Buckner 3 for 4.....I believe Owen is starting to get on a roll now....keep your eyes on them...

North Buncombe 1 - T.C. Roberson 0

Pitchers dual today at N.B. with the blackhawks coming out on top. Ali Manns was the winner today for North Buncombe. Courtney Hudson took the tough loss. Both pitchers looked sharp today but only one team can win. Second conference loss for T.C. as they have lost both games by a total of 2 runs.
North Buncombe and Enka clash Thurs at Enka. If the rain permits.

It was UGLY!! Hudson winning pitcher. Lots of extra base hits from TC. The emotional NB loss yesterday made it hard for the team to focus on Franklin. I hope there are no more back-to-back confrence games!

Thanks Missilebuilder. Now we are starting to get everybody in on whats happening in these here mountains. Back to back games are tough. In defense of Franklin they can hit especially that Waldroop girl...haha...I am finding out more on this webpage than the Asheville Citizens Times....what a shocker huh? Too bad they only think that the young ladies deserve one article a week.

And the one artical a week they do write has facts wrong. Since when did Hudson become a senior? LOL, they couldn't even get the day right! This forum is much more accurate...sometimes.

Missilebuilder, I had heard that the Hudson girl was very very smart...I guess they figured she could skip her senior year...lol.
Good Luck to Courtney and tell her to keep pitching her game. She is a great athlete...Too bad TC Roberson hasn't figured out she can hit too...But, maybe thats a good thing for the rest of us.

I can't believe they don't have Courtney hitting yet. They are sound defensively and certainly Courtney has improved their pitching, but how can you leave her bat on the sideline every game. TCR was obviously just a fraction away from winning those 2 conference games. Court's bat could have easily put them over the top. Their DH did get on base twice against NB but the DH could be hitting for one of their other weaker spots.

BTW, I was happy to see that ACT started the baseball/softball highlights page such as they did with basketball. I can handle a few more mistakes if they give more coverage.

Hanger4,welcome to the web. You need to post your highlights here so we can hear about Erwin. I hear you won your game last night against Asheville High but softballQ has been rather slow to update us. Enjoy the good conversations and find out whats really going on around us and across the state on High School softball...The ankle is coming along real nice. She played last night for a couple of innings against Smokey and went 2 for 2 and a walk before tim pulled her in the top of the 3rd. Hopefully she will be healed that much more for tomorrow's big game against North Buncombe.....again welcome..

Good to see a great hitting game for Manns and Webb,,I would like to see Hudson hitting ,she has hit very well in traveling ball and is capable of great power, she can get the bunt down as well( sometimes needed in those tight games)..Back to back conferece games this early is tough..When the season moves along and everbody is really game tough it will be different..I have seen Hudson pitch around 26 inn in a day and be strong all the way. Hawks- Sugar Jets on Thursday..Gonna be a great race in 3a..Go every body, my dog is not in this fight

Hudson did make her first hitting apperence aginst Franklin. She would much rather just focus on pitiching her game but after the loss to NB she asked to be in the line up. She didnt do so great but did lay down some key bunts aginst Franklin that may have made the difference in the NB game. She is working hard to get the kinks in her swing out and hopes to be moving up in the line up. Ill see you later today hanger! Good Luck to both teams in the Enka/NB match up today!!

Erwin 7 - Roberson 2.

Who's going to win the conference this year? Right now the front runner is North Buncombe but Erwin seems to have woken up and wants to have a say in the outcome. Lauren West held Roberson to 2 runs. Glad to see her back pitching strong. Two big conference wins this week for the Lady Warriors. Erwin has missed having her on the mound. It looks like they brought their bats as well. Congratulations Erwin.:notworthy

Lauren pitched 7 good innings. 4 or 6 Ks. Gave up 4 hits about. I believe only 1 earned run. The Warriors play like Warriors when she's on the rubber.

Some hitting stats;
AV 2-4 DB 1RBI 2 Runs
Morgan 2-4 1RBI
Alicia 2-3 2RBI

I know I left some out, these I'm sure of.
Will do better next time.

This season has brought a few surprises, especially this week. The 3A schools are banging around like pinballs which means no one can take any game for granted.

If anyone had suggested at the start of this week that NB would have beaten BOTH TCR and Enka, I would have had them institutionalized. No way! But, guess what? They found ways to win both games. Monday by manufacturing a run versus the Rams and today by taking full advantage of every opportunity and break that came their way against the Sugar Jets. You have to be impressed with the job Coach Ray is doing with that squad. This is a team that bends a bit here and there, but this week they avoided breaking.

On paper Enka has the edge in experience and athleticsm. As is typical of Tim Miller's clubs, they have dependable pitching, are solid defensively and fundamentally strong. They just keep reloading year after year. Both the JV and Middle School teams are undefeated so far this season, again. Today, however, was one of those days when nothing seemed to go their way. When they get back in their groove, which could well be tomorrow against Tuscola, they are nearly unbeatable. But not today.

TC has a very solid club, but the breaks didn't go their way Monday against NB and they ran into a resurgent Erwin bunch today. They have a ton of potential and Laura Case is an excelent teacher and communicator. I like their team spirit and senior leadership. You can bet that they will put this nightmare week behind them and contend for the league crown. Nobody will get a free ticket against them. If they don't beat your brains out, they'll at least scare you to death.

East Henderson is intriguing because of their youth. Starting a bunch of sophomores, they have the potential to splash hot coffee on anybody's lap. Mark my word: watch out for this bunch. If not this year, you can count on them being serious conference and playoff contenders the next two years. They are athletic, competitive and perhaps most importantly, hungry. That chomp-chomping you hear behind you is this gang coming on.

Franklin is the darkhorse, but at this point they are a big question mark. They have shown signs of deserving a place near the top and bottom of the standings, so I hear. If they can gain some consistency, on the good side that is, look out. Their coaches feel very good about what they are seeing in practice each day. That's a good sign. If they ever get really ticked off about having to make that long drive so often, they could turn some little red wagons upside down while everybody's inside buying ice cream.

Thankfully, Erwin now has a reliable pitcher, so they can settle down to winning. This a very athletic group of kids, and highly competitive with good, solid coaching. As they proved today against TC, they are capable of beating anybody in this league. Those early losses were pretty embarrassing, so expect these Warriors to be putting a lot of folks on the Trail of Tears before this campaign is over.

Tuscola is another interesting group. No seniors. None. Nada. They're made up of a couple of juniors and a bus load of sophomores and freshmen. They may not win a lot of games this year, but get your licks in now folks because in a year or two, if they stay together, you're going to see some serious softball come out of Waynesville. Promise.

Asheville is simple, but sad: they are plagued by not having a feeder program. They have the athletes in school, but if none, or very few, are playing youth or travel ball, the coach there is saddled with starting from scratch and there's no way you can do that in this league and expect to win. Ain't gonna happen.

In essence, what all this means is that the teams emerging from the fracas will be more prepared than possibly ever before to compete, if not dominate, in the state playoffs. Strong competition from the top of the conference to the bottom is going to be lots of fun to watch. That's for sure. Had my say-so. That's all.

Beating the Enka Sugar Jets is a rare and cherished event. Its only happened once for the North Buncombe Lady Hawks since fastpitch started in WNC. Once! Losing a big game is always tough but the excitement felt by the Lady Hawks is really a tribute to the outstanding program at Enka. Even in defeat, I was so impressed with the Enka players and their coach. Coach Miller has instilled a hustling never give up spirit, a belief that the game is never over until the final out. I love to watch a team play with that kind of positive spirit. On top of all that, they have great sportmanship. Two players hit the ball hard back to the NB pitcher hitting her in the shins and in the hand. Both players from Enka came over after the ball game to see how Ali was doing. Now THAT is the definition of class.
No team is perfect every game. Enka made a few errors, and North Buncombe hit the ball well late in the game, moved runners and then made the plays on defense.
This was a huge win for NB because all conference championships go through Enka but the season isn't even half way over. If NB relaxes at all they could find themselves out of the playoffs. TCR will be back, Erwin is already back, the giant killers from Franklin and East Henderson are just waiting to pounce, and a wounded Enka is even more dangerous than before.
My hats off to Enka. In my eyes, both teams showed something special yesterday.

NB 3 / EH 0

Very tough game. Stepp pitched a great game. 1-0 thru 4 innings before NB scored 2 on singles by Davis, Edmonds, Manns and Boone. Boone also had the first inning RBI. Manns had a perfect game after 6. Stepp got a bunt single in the 7th. So close to the no-no but give Stepp credit. With the 3rd baseman playing up she still put down the perfect bunt riding the 3rd base line. The East Henderson shortstop is a vacuum with a cannon.

Congrats to Owen and Burnett. She and they are mowing them down. Should be some interesting match ups down the road.

Pisgah/ NB tomorrow. Houston will be pitching for NB.

Great game today as West Henderson downed Pisgah, 3-2. Errors did Pisgah in as senior Megan Cooke had a strong outing, tossing a three-hitter. But it was another bigtime performance by West's Shannon Harris, a junior, that won the day. That gives her exeptional back-to-back pitching performances, going nine innings at Owen Friday and eight today at home against Pisgah. Check out these combined numbers:

W-L: 1-1
IP: 17
Hits: 5
SO: 29
BB: 2
Runs: 3
Earned Runs: 1

The difference for Harris versus last season? Excellent control, first-pitch strikes, keeping her pitches down in the zone and bearing down when the pressure's on. Truly impressive.

NB 6 / Pisgah 5
An unusual game. NB played strong in the first half and then Pisgah fought back late coming up just one hit short.
Amy Allen started for Pisgah and Angela Houston for NB. NB came out hitting in the first inning and posted a 2 run lead. Pisgah came back with 1 run and then the Pisgah bats went silent for 3 innings while NB increased the lead to 6-1. Holt came in to pitch for Pisgah in the 5th. The Pisgah bats also exploded for 4 runs in the 5th including 2 triples and a double. Manns came in with 2 outs and a runner on third and closed out the inning. Both pitchers shut the offense down after that. The hits were scattered through out the line up for NB.

Pisgah and Owen on Friday! Should be a great game. Wish I could see it. Asheville is at NB on Friday.

North Buncombe 4 / Asheville 1

Yes a much closer game than expected and actually closer than the score. Brittany Allen made a diving catch in centerfield for the last out of the game to save at least 2 runs from scoring. NB had 12 hits but couldn't string a bunch of hits together. The Asheville catcher, (Danielle?) helped to slow down several rallies, picked a runner off of 1st and throwing out a runner trying to steal 3rd. Two perfect throws. She also just missed catching a runner stealing second. I was most impressed with the improvement in the Asheville pitcher. Last year she walked 1 or 2 an inning and today she may have walked 1 or 2 total. Asheville is a free swinging much improved team.

Congrats to Owen on their big win over Pisgah. That Owen machine is rolling. A bad week for Pisgah but the winners from this week better watch out in the second half.

Thanks for the info cosmo Hawk......The Davis kid I, think her name is Kelly is going to be a great player for North Buncombe...I have seen her play in the Hawks big games this year..Great speed ,sound defense, and very aggresive at bat, the Davis kid over at Owen graduates this year,,so there will be at least one davis to play and this one may well be better

Her name is Kelly Davis.... and I agree, she is doing a great job for NB. She has all the skills you described plus determination. Unfortunately for the JV team she was the only girl who had any pitching experience and she was moved up to varsity. Her speed, and glove were desparately needed in the senior departed NB outfield. Her bat has been an asset also. She is another shining example of how the Blue Ridge Explosion and other travel teams in the area have helped to increase the level of the talent pool.

Both teams a little rusty at the plate. 0-0 after 4. 2 hits for Franklin and 1 for NB. Top of 5 with 1 out...a dropped pop up to 2nd base and a kicked ball has the Franklin runner heading to 2nd base, the throw to 2nd gets past everyone and the run scores. Its 1-0. In the bottom of the 5th, NB scores 4 runs with 2 outs with 3 hits and 2 walks.
Edmonds and Manns had the RBI's in the 5th. Love gets the RBI single in the 6th. Allen's change up worked well. Manns had 9 Ks.

Another typical tight battle between NB and Erwin. The game was scoreless through 4 innings..... Lauren West and Ali Manns both throwing excellent ball games. Hannah Webb broke the tie with a 2 out 2 RBI single in the 5th. NB scored 2 more in the 6th. The Lady Hawks defense and Manns' pitching were able to pull out a no-hitter against a dangerous Erwin line up. Ali did walk one in the 6th but Alicia Wilde threw the runner out trying to steal second. NB plays TCRoberson on Friday at TCR.

TCRoberson 1 - North Buncombe 0

A super game for the fans. A deserving win for TCR. They made the big plays on defense every time NB had a rally and this time they were the team to get the big hit. NB rallied in the first getting the bases loaded with 0 outs. Boone rips a one hopper to 3rd and they execute a double play to home and back to first. Later in the game the TCR catcher picks a runner off of first to stop a rally and in another inning NB hits a line drive to short and get picked off of first for the double play. NB stopped several TCR rallies also making this game a real gut twister. Both pitchers did well but I'd say Manns was stronger early in the game but fell behind more hitters later in the game while NB created more scoring threats early but Courtney was more in control in the later innings. Finally in the bottom of the 7th, TCR got a rally going with runners on 1st and 2nd. It seemed NB got what they needed, a pop up towards 2nd base, it was called infield fly but it was dropped and booted towards left field and the runners advanced. NB intentionally loaded the bases, pulled everyone up close and then TCR came through with the game winning drive out to left. Congrats to TCR. Courtney only gave up 3 hits and Ali gave up 4. The only offensive strong point for NB was two deep doubles by Melody Edmonds. The win for TCR certainly gets them firmly in the playoff picture and makes the NB/Enka winner next Tuesday, the sole leader of the conference. What a ball game!

Lauren West pitcher for Erwin gave up three hits. East Henderson pitcher gave up 10 hits. Alicia Anders and freshman Courtney Davis led Erwin in hitting. Lauren West hit Courtney Davis in for the Erwin run. Throw away from third base to second brought in a run for East Henderson. Tied score and bottom of the tenth. East Henderson had a runner on third and a hit to center scored the winning run.

Tons of respect to the Enka ball team. Coach Ray deserves the MVP in this ball game. He used the DH and got sophomore Stephanie Bush and her aggressive pinch hitting bat in the ball game. She came through with 2 big hits and 2 RBIs. He called a great ball game on offense and defense. Manns hit her spots and used the umpires low and sometimes irratic (sp?) strike zone. NB made the sacrifices, the bunt base hits, stolen bases and key base hits. It takes a near perfect performance to beat the Enka Sugar Jets. Tonight the NB Lady Hawks had it. The one thing I do know for sure... if NB continues to win, they will have to face Enka again in the playoffs....and THAT will be a game to see.

NB wins with hitting and pitching but the defense was a little shaky yesterday. 5 errors but 4 were from one position. Those errors and the gritty play from EH helped them get 4 runs. Manns pitched well with 5Ks and all runs were unearned. Edmonds was 4 for 4. Got to see the 2nd line pitcher from East Henderson for 2/3 of an inning after Stepp was taken out in the 6th. She can throw hard and has a good change. EH will be competing for a playoff spot next year. In my opinion, they have the most improved team this year.

Just a little info about appealing runners leaving early. We appealed but were told later we didn't get the appeal because we appealed incorrectly. That is strange because it was several minutes after the play was completed, Ali stepped on the rubber, the batter was in the box, and then she stepped off and asked for the appeal. The appeal was denied and an error on the next play brings in 2 runs. Later the ump tells us, yes, the runner had left several steps early but the problem was we appealed while time was called. After talking to a veteran umpire today, apparently the current rules allow you to appeal at any time after the play and before the next pitch by any player or coach. Just an FYI. Of course it doesn't change anything if you know the rules and the umpire does not.

North Buncombe 3 - Asheville 0

Asheville plays strong again against NB. NB was good at loading the bases but not getting many key hits. Everyone (but the pitchers)was frustrated with a huge strike zone, but at least it didn't change much. Asheville is an agressive swinging ball club anyway. It just caused everyone to be free swingers. If you watched something near the plate, it was a strike. I am so impressed with Danielle, the catcher from Asheville. What an arm! Manns pitched a 2 hitter with 9Ks. Leading hitters...Edmonds 3/5, Manns 3/4

NB plays today at Tuscola.

North Buncombe wins the MAC Conference Title for the first time since fastpitch started in 1996! Congrats to Coach Ray, Coach Zim and the NB squad.
I don't know much about the other conferences in our region but the MAC has 3 teams going who are so equally matched. If we had to play 7 game series to determine the winner, I would bet each series would go to the 7th game. In other words I think our conference is very strong from one through three. For that matter, I think the entire MAC conference this year has stepped up a level. The teams at the bottom third are much improved. Then Erwin, Franklin and East Henderson are all good enough to beat any one of the top teams on any given day. I hope NB, Enka, and TCR all can perform at the level they have played at during the season. If so, one of the MAC teams will be going to the final four.
Speaking of playing Erwin. Erwin at NB on Friday. As always, it will go down to the end to decide the winner.

Erwin played Asheville High on Tuesday which was Senior day....This was the last home game for our seniors which always makes it a little on the sad side. Great game which was heading towards a nohitter until the last few innings. Erwin gets the win.

#8 Maiden defeated #3 Cherryville 3-2 to win the conference tournament championship. They have now won 3 out of the last 4 meetings! Jennifer Hendricks hits a two-run HR and was an excellent game to watch. Good luck to both squads in the 1A State playoffs!

North Buncombe 3 - Erwin 1

Good defense on both sides. Strong pitching by West and Manns.
Hits were scattered amongst the line up for NB. Bush had 2 hits.
Erwin had 3 singles from West and a double from Erin Morrow.
Great game by both teams. Great sportmanship always when these two teams play. It is soo cool to see friendships are what really counts when its all over. Awesome seniors from Erwin..

NB finished 21-2 overall and 15-1 in the MAC.
I don't know Erwin's overall but I think they ended 10-6 in conference.

I have to agree with Hawks08. Although Erwin took the loss, both teams were winners both on and off the field. Strong friendships have formed through the years. When Lauren West looked up at Manns father and said "I'll miss you"....we knew what it was all about. Good luck to the seniors and can't wait to hear about the exciting adventure that lies ahead for you.

Enka pulled out a close one. 6 to 5. in the bottom of the 7th.

Reynolds starting pitcher Janelle (nellie)Trifon pitch 5 innings before giving way to Amy Huntley and was leading 5 to 0. Nellie is just a special person. You may think that I am referring to her athletic abilities which are immense but just the character of this young lady is to be commended. She is the type of player anybody would want on their team because she is smart as well as athletically gifted...

I am not trying to single out Nellie above anybody else because there are some great ballplayers on Reynolds team. I can't go without talking about Dana Burton as well....Great young lady as well as a gifted player as well.

I know I am talking about Reynolds and my daughter plays for Enka but to talk too much about Enka or my daughter would come across as bragging or arrogant and I will leave that to other people to discuss good or bad. But, I am a diehard Enka fan and love Enka softball...

If what we saw from Enka in the ACR game is a predictor of the future, they have a lot to look forward to. Next year on the mound Tim Miller will have junior, junior and sophomore. As quickly as softball is improving hereabouts (quickly catching up with the rest of the state), that's the type of pitching a team will need to advance through the season and the playoffs, not to mention capturing a state title at the Final Four. By next spring, Katie B will have completely healed and I wager better prepared for the season, Amber B will have benefited from her experience this season and Sara S will be coming into her own as a top-quality hurler, too. Plus, all three are also good hitters! Next year Enka should have strong senior leadership, speed galore and experience. If they come up short on anything, it will most likely be a big stick to consistently rock the fences, or fly over them altogether. But then again, with that speed, pitching and experience...swoosh, there go the Sugerjets!

2A will be very interesting...but more on that later. For now, let's just say that it will be a pleasure to see Shannon Harris (West) and Sara Burnette (Owen) lock up again. Those two provided fans with three of the very best games in WNC HS softball this season. Great fun!
