NCBBallFan:

Can you recheck the below berth counts for the 4A Conference Playoff Berths from your source. My calculations come up with 17 4A berths instead of 16 berths which may be correct but just checking?!?

I just counted 17 also .. and when back to the publishing source (playoff berths on nc.ihigh.com) in their pdf file.... they have the same mistake.

I would BET that the Pac 6 isn't getting 4 and that's a typo... it seems a little extreme for a 6 school conf.

Is there someone that we can contact to find out for sure?

The NC State Athletic Association should have the information... I'll check and see about an e-mail address to submit the question.

I've submitted the question to the person responsible for publications for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Hopefully, we will get a response... if not, we'll send all 17!!!!

I got this reply from the NC High School Athletic Association concerning 4A berths.

===========================
Our handbook for this year indicates that the PAC 6 has three berths, 16 total in the West. Hope this helps...

I HEARD THEY MAY BE EXPANDING THE PLAYOFFS LIKE IN FOOTBALL. HEARD THE COACHES WERE ASK TO VOTE ON THIS. ANY TRUTH TO THIS??

Even soccer gets to send 48 teams to states, football sends 64 ... there is no reason for baseball to be limited to 32.

I haven't heard anything, but it sure makes sense.

the NCHSAA circulated a petition last month to all the head baseball coaches across the state...

the petition was to expand the current playoff system for THIS YEAR to at least 48 teams (1 bracket similar to soccer) and at most 64 (possibly two brackets like football).

the state felt some teams got a bit slighted last year (South Meck and East Meck both winning twenty) under the current system...and is looking to change it this year..

from the coaches i have spoke to thus far NO ONE has said no to the change..

it's nice to see that the powers that be saw a flaw and are looking to rectify it swiftly
