This is a topic that is VERY difficult to discuss on a board, where you basically only see your own conference play + have a few "out of conference" games that you get to attend.
Ranking the teams becomes difficult also. In another thread, I posted my TOP 25 teams in Western NC this year. The "Sweet 16" normally includes the immediate Charlotte area and northern tier of S.C. I don't know anything about SC this year.
Here is the list I posted. Good luck trying to rank them. It will be a true challenge.
------------------------------------------------------
Leading Candidates (25 teams) - Not in any order.
Ind: Charlotte Christian,
2A: West Henderson, East Rutherford, Mt. Pleasant
3A: Ragsdale, Tuscola, TC Roberson, Glenn, St. Stephens, West Rowan, Piedmont, Hickory, East Henderson
4A: South Meck, Providence, Hopewell, Myers Park, McDowell, East Meck, AC Reynolds, South Caldwell, Alexander Central, West Forsyth, North Forsyth, East Burke
------------------------------------------------------
On the outside looking in:
Northwest Cabarrus, Ashbrook, East Rowan, South Point, Franklin
------------------------------------------------------
That gives you possibly the best 30 teams in the west and I probably forgot at least 2-3 good teams... have fun coming up with ANY decent order that makes sense!
East Henderson is a 3A school

Shows you how many mistakes I can make!!!
Sorry ... I'll correct it..
And that's also why I don't want to try and rank them...I know I would make a couple dozen mistakes
Tuscola made 9 of those mistakes against East giving up no earned runs, but 7 unearned runs. so we all make those mistakes just some are more costly.

I think we play tag at your house on the 21st.
Little Pops was doing the same thing the last game....
We've been fortunate ... It's a very young team, but I know Braves will acuse me of sand-bagging. We need a few more weeks before we can tell how steady the team is going to be.
There is some talent. I got to talk to Randy (Brad's Dad) at the last game. Hopefully we can meet on Wednesday.

I'm not sure ... Wifey saw it written in the concession stand that there will be a game this Wednesday but it's up here ...
We haven't heard a peep from the coaches yet (or our player forgot..... d'oh)
If you hear anything, let me know!!!

Observations of the rankings:
I see that Andy has been reading my posts, placing MP and North Meck in his Top 10, but what happened to Providence. They should be before any other team in SW4A at this time.
I wonder if SM loses another game if they can bump up to the top spot :)
But what has made Ol' Braves happy about reading these rankings is that Impact Baseball has ranked my alma mater in SC #3 in the state in their classification......way to go Falcons!!!!

I agree for the most part.
Providence needs to be there.
McDowell is well deserved.
West Rowan needs to be in the top 10 in 3A.
South Meck is where it belongs .. in the top 2.
North is over-rated, not enough experience.
I'm surprised that Richmond is still up there with 2 quick losses.
With Tuscola, Franklin & TC Roberson all ranked in the MAC, that looks to be a very tough conference.

The Baseball America/ BCA Poll corrected that oversight..
They have South Meck #3, Providence #4....

The great thing about polls is that they don't mean anything and everyone hates something about them. It stirs the passions. Impact only reports the top 10 per their voting, not everyone who may have gotten a vote.
The NCHSBCA/BA Poll also came out today. As is normal, everyone is looking at something a little different and it's impossible to see everyone, especially against good competition.
There are SOME differences between the two polls but generally, they recognize the same programs.
The NCHSBCA/BA poll is voted on by the High School Baseball Coaches Association members and reports on everyone receiving any votes.
West Forsyth did not receive any votes. North Forsyth would have been 11th in that poll. Using the logic you mentioned (about none of them being on any of the Impact teams), I guess none of them played high school ball either.

Hello,
To be clear, Impact Baseball does NOT rank South Carolina high school teams. The polls we post for SC are the SC Coaches Polls.
As far as the NC Team polls, we do not go strickly on a team's record. Actually, records mean very little at this point in the season. We try to rank who we feel are the best "teams."
Team Polls are just "good reading" aren't they? Top 10 Polls can only please 10 teams in each classification...
FYI: "Braves" Randleman (2A) just beat Providence (4A) who you thought should be over everyone else in SW4A.

ncbbfan why are talking trash about west forsyth??? they are 4-1 this year. they did beat north forsyth. why are they not mentioned of the polls??? who knows, and who cares. they were not mentioned last year until after the playoffs started with only 2 regular season losses. after losing the state championship games to a very strong fuquay they were ranked 3rd. i don't know what they have done to be in the doghouse??? but hey life goes on. i still do not understand why you are talking trash about them????????
NCBBallFan
03-18-03, 08:27 AM
Catamount, I'm not talking trash ... but I was making a point!
It seems like every time a team in the western part of the state isn't mentioned in the polls, they attribute it to the fact that they didn't have anyone go to the "Impact" showcases and pay them enough money.
I spoke to Braves earlier about this ... South Meck is #2 and they only had 1 player at Impact last year. North Meck is #9 and they didn't have anyone there. The comment that had been made was by Homerun4:
"I GUESS NONE OF THESE GUYS PLAYED ON THE IMPACT TRAVEL TEAM."
That's what I was focusing on, not the omission of them from the polls.
None of us have seen enough of the teams inside the state to be able to talk intelligently about rankings. How often have you seen Hoggard? Rose? Garner? Fuquay? West Henderson? Tuscola? ... probably the same as me NONE.
I've never seen a poll that I agree with completely. But the cut on the people providing the poll was too easy a target for my native sense of sarcasm. I couldn't resist myself.

:D :D :D I can see the egg on his face now!!!!! You know, using Brave's logic, Providence should have moved UP in the polls after that loss!!! :D :D :D
obtw: You guys have NM too high :D :D We actual have a core course required of all athletes ... Braves provided the material for the curiculum ... it's called "Master Bagging" or Sand Bagging IV. It is a senior, college level course.

There's your answer Braves ... why Providence isn't on the poll ... Impact has you guys in a sweep of the SW4A!!!!!!! They must have you guys and MP both beating Providence twice!!!!!
Since that's settled, you don't have to play the games!!!! (or do you????) I'm sure that Prov will just let "ole Braves" call in the score he wants!!!!!
(and they have NM ranked too high)
Seriously Braves, Providence has been struggling to score runs so far this season. Their last 3 games have been 2-0 Butler, 2-1 Waddell and 2-5 Randleman. They are going to need more than 2 runs per game this season in the SW4A... there are too many teams (Olympic, Waddell, MP, SM, EM) who are going to push some runs over the plate. Knowing their history, I'm sure you feel like they will get the bats going, but they haven't yet. Until they can start plating more runs, they are very vulnerable.
Many folks haven't heard about this team yet, because they've only played 3 games, but Northwest Cabarrus is definitely one of the top 10 "3A" teams in the state, they are awful strong. In fact, they have one of the state's best pitchers (Lucas Dalton) and a very strong group of senior leadership at the key positions. They are 3-0 and just defeated East Rowan 4-1 in the NPC opener.
I noticed West Rowan and Mooresville both received votes in the Coaches Poll, but trust me when I say that Northwest Cabarrus will have a very good year. The NPC is shaping up to have some very good 3A teams once again this spring, even with East Rowan in a rebuilding year...

NCBballfan, my question for you is why do you insist on keeping bringing up the fact that NM is overrated....It is fine that you posted your opinion once but u don't have to post it everytime you make a reply.. In my opinion they have done the job so far making way for them to be in that poll no matter what their age is.....I mean i guess u forgot about the South Meck game and Hopewell game. I also guess you think that it was a fluke when the #9 team NM hit Cruse up for four runs and their sophmore pitchers shut down the senior filled line up to only 3 runs. I mean until they show different they should be in that poll and that is the bottom line..

If they keep getting ranked, how are they going to sneak up on other teams!!!
:roflmao: :roflmao:

Well sneaking up on people isn't goin to be possible if they keep winning. Many people look at records and they are undeated, meaning many people have probably already heard about them. So give credit where credit is due that is all I ask and i yes i do know you are a supporter...

Seriously, North Meck may be young, but they are off to a great start and already have some very high quality wins. I mean you yourself picked two of your victims, South Meck and Hopewell, to win their conferences. In addition, East Gaston and Butler are no slouches and you did slaughter Vance, who beat Myers Park.
Anyway, the NM kids are off to a great start and deserve a lot of credit.

I think what NC is trying to say is that NM is a young team and historically young teams are inconsistant. Yes, they're a good team but they will probably suffer some highs and lows before the season is out. This may not happen, of course, they may go undefeated, but to rank them very high in the polls this early may be expecting a little too much.
Prepster
03-18-03, 04:54 PM
I think the biggest challenge to a young, talented team comes late in the season, after it's won many more games than it's lost; and the players begin to feel the pressure that comes with their high position in the conference standings, state rankings, etc.
Perhaps NM can avoid this. I hope they can, as I've really enjoyed watching them play the wide-open, exciting brand of ball they play.

Baseball America says it's published weekly (I don't see how with all the rain). Give it your best shot. What movement do you guys see in the polls. Some teams are moving up, some down, some are playing above their heads, some below.
Predictions welcome: Have fun with it.
