3/17 Randleman 5, Providence 2
Randleman's record climbs to 2-2, Providence falls to 4-1. Randleman started the season ranked #2 in some 2A polls, but early season losses have pushed them down.

The big thing that helped the Spartans in this game was costly base running errors by the Pioneers. Had 4 runners make base running mistakes which ran them out of potentional run scoring opportunities. Reid pitched a decent game but the hitting of Josh Bentley has been phenomanal the last couple games. Also for the Pioneers Chris Nigro threw a heck of a game. Just didnt get much support.

Baseballfan pretty much summed it up. WHS could have had 3 or 4 runs early on but instead got down 4-0 after the baserunning blunders. Nigro had a 3-run double to get it to 4-3, but it could have easily been 6 or 7 to 4 -- South rallied once Watauga got close -- the actual final was 8-3. Anyhow, the game was obviously NOT rained out as the game scores thread indicated.
The BEST

Even though WHS runners got picked off they would not have scored because Reid either k'd the next hitters or got a ground ball. They had no hits to back them up even if they were on base. This just shows that SC is coached very well becuase they never give up on a play when a mistake is made.
The difference between Watauga and South Caldwell is that SC hits a ton and Watauga pecks away. The baserunning mistakes most certainly did hurt Watauga's chances. Reid pitched a good game, but I would not say that he was overpowering as the BEST suggested. He is fortunate to have the SC bats in his dugout.

In the game Reid only had 5 or 6 k's so he was not over powering. Reid is more a finesse pitcher in my opinon not an over powering type. The Watauga boys put the ball in play well and there base running mistakes just hurt them. The bats from South are great.

bIg Fan: This game was really close with errors accounting for most of the runs. Big I did not hit the ball well but the defense was prtty solid except for two errors in the 4th. The pitcher for big I did a pretty good job of keeping NM off balance with lots of breaking balls and the 1st baseman made several good play for them. NM just put several hits together after the two errors in the 4th to take charge. I was hoping to see Trey Starnes pitch but he played third and went 1 for 3 with two K's.

Smasher39: My bad on Brandon's name I am new to North Meck and trying to learn everybody's name. Brandon pitched well tonight and has looked pretty good up to this point. Why are they not letting Greg Allen pitch?

highntight: Trey has not really pitched this year. He pitched against Butler and so did the kid that threw against you guys. Trey Starnes went 0-3. He didnt have a hit. Our first four batters have been struggling.

Great weather and a fine pitching performance by Daniel Bard. Charlotte Christian wins 2-0 over Hendersonville.
Daniel was throwing consistently in the low 90's and touched 93 and 94 five or six times. His slider/cut fastball at times was very tough. The scouts were out in force today. Probably 8 guns clocking. Scouts from the Reds, Yankees and White Sox were spotted. Christian's defense was good. On to Monday game at 4:00 at CC.
WP- Drew Mahre
HR- Clint Pethel,,,,,, also Ryan Query had 2 doubles...

It took 10 innings but NM pulled it out in bottom of the 10th.
Even a 3 day rain delay couldn't knock NM's soph. righty Tom Porter off his game. Porter pitched superbly for 7 innings today to go along with 3 strong innings on Wed. for a complete 10 inning game. Porter continually kept NM in the game, mixing pitches well and keeping WM off balanced, collecting as many Ks as outs in the field.
Porter's performance was made even more evident, by NMs inability to push runs across the plate. NM hitters left men in scoring position in several different frames before tallying the winning score in the 10th.

In the NM vs. Independence game, I did not see greg Allen or Daniel Whitmire get solid hits. I should also add that Allen is batting less than .200 for the season. Whitmire is not leading Allen by much. The only solid hits for the game were by Pou in the 1st and Kelly in the third.

Just curious....how many errors by MP and were they at crucial times?
This maybe the most talented Providence team in many years...To all the SW4A teams...Beware of the Panthers...they are getting prepared to bite.
I suspect MP will be licking their wounds and taking it out on their opponents this week...not a good week to play the Mustangs.

I have to agree. Our cleanup hitting for North JV leaves a lot to be desired. I watched the Norht vs. Ind game pitch for pitch and the only solid hits were Pou and Kelly. North JV isn't winning with a great hitting game. Their defense has been very solid and this has won their games.

About hitting
At a time of year when most of the bats are starting to heat up, a lot of players will be lagging behind because of lack of repetitions, rain, not seeing live pitching as much as needed, missed games, games played in the drizzle.
In non-conference play, a lot of pitchers were also being auditioned for the season. Determinations were being made by the coaches as to who was consistant and could "get the job done". Now that conference play has begin, the pitching for most every team has solidified and it's made it even tougher on the hitters. By the end of the 2nd week of April, you will probably be able to tell who has the good hitting teams.

DH Conley, after being ranked nationally slipped with two early season losses. They have seemed to have "righted the ship" with two strong wins this past week, moving them into strong contention as one of the better teams in the state. Their week included wins against North Pitt (6-2) and East Wayne (3-1).
Hoggard High School in Wilmington is always a powerhouse at the plate. This week they dropped a key matchup to state contender JH Rose 7-1. JH Rose was challenged earlier this week by the quality squad out of Kinston, pulling out a 6-5 victory. Late in the week, Laney toppled JH Rose 2-1.
These 3 teams have to be watched carefully out of the "Far East".
