Educate me, now!!!

what's the difference between a cd burner and a cdrw.

what is a good program that i should use to burn cd's effectively.

One is a Memorex CRW-1622. Another is an Acer Re-writer. And the third one is some 40X generic cd-rom that my father purchased for me. Should I keep all three?

Which one should be my master? which ones should be the slaves?

I would keep the cd rom for general use just to keep the wear and tear down on your CDRW or burner.(there is no difference)

I use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Plantinum to make cds.

Mkay... we'll begin... CD-R and CD-RW are BOTH burners... CD-R can only Write one time(good for making copies of CDs and music CDs)... CD-RW can write and then rewrite later(good for saving files that will change)...

there are a few good programs... the easiest to learn will probably be Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 or Nero Burning Rom

You really only need to keep 2 of them... if at all possible I'd suggest using the CD-Rom IF it can read burnt CDs and the faster of the 2 writers... play ALL your CDs on the normal CD Rom and only use the burner for burning... that way there is less chance of screwing up the burner... plus its a little less time consuming some times....

...my biggest tip get one of those BIG ass bundles of blank CDs... and play around with the burner... you WILL fuck some up... but that's okay because you can get those bundles cheap... once you done a few you'll be a pro

Ok, so i play my mp3's using Windows Media.

I go to play with Nero and drag over a music file...and it doesn't recognize the format since it is Windows Media.

No I need to reformat the music file?

Teach me more!!! ;)

If it's an MP3, it should recognize it. You are creating a CD right?

yes, i am. Well, all my music is .wma and Nero can't read the file.

wma? why? where'd you get it? if you ever rip your own music (that is, pull it from a CD to your computer) use only MP3 (or AIF if you're snooty).

most of my music came from napster, morpheus, bearshare, etc.

I have Real Audio Player and Windows Media.

You know how when you install a program, for example, photo paint pro and all your jpg's are assigned to that program? Well, the same happens to my music files in regards to Windows Media.

You'll need to search the net for a program called WMA to MP3... that way you can convert them to mp3 format... you can't burn from WMA to CDA(its the type of format CDs use)... but Nero can transform MP3 to CDA... all you have to do is select to create an Audio/Music CD and it will let you select the MP3 files.

Hmmm.... I think we're talking about different things. You're describing file associations, not file formats. For example, you mention jpeg files suddenly thinking their paint pro files. Well, the truth is, your computer has determined that jpg files are to be associated with photo paint pro. The files are still jpegs and can be opened by anything that opens a jpeg, it's just that if you double click them, they'll try to open in photo paint pro.

I'm wondering if you've really got wma files or if window media player has been associated with them. I would think you should be able to determine the true file type in some way. Not everybody puts the filetype in the filename -- especially with mp3's. Does NERO take MP3's? It should, I would think, but really CD's are in their own format. Get yourself the latest version of Toast. I know that'll take MP3's.

What version of NERO are you using?

Ok, I am reinstalling winamp...something i should have done a long time ago. Files work fine except for the 12 i want. Still in .wma. :( Just going to re-copy the music to my computer and then attempt to burn to a cd.

Thanks for the help guys. I know much, but not enough... especially when it comes to all the lingo. One day i'll be just like you guys!!!

i have a headache now.

SEE Nut I knew that was right... her problem is they are WMA That's Microsoft's version of the MP3... Kakia... do like I said and find the program I told you... you can look for a shareware version here http://www.download.com Then convert your files from WMA to MP3... Nero can't read WMA... once you convert it to MP# you should have NO problem burning the CD

Here this one should work for you... follow the link for the program... its shareware which means you can only do it for a certain number of days before you have to buy it... but hopefully you can get them finished LONG before that deadline runs out

I'm just curious as to how she got .WMA files. Are those really out there being shared? She seemed to indicate that it was because windows media player did something to them. While it isn't beyond the realm of possibilities for a MS product to change things without telling you, it would be very odd.

Kakia, e-mail one of your... oh wait. That's what started this all... do you have any that are really small? Like under a 1 meg? If so, e-mail one to me.

Unless that other program works for you, that is...

re-reading your last reply, I noticed that there are only a few files that are messed up. These, then, are probably indeed in the wrong format. Probably also came from a different source than the others. Do what brain said for these and you should be okay.

I know, the entire thing is odd. I'm wondering if it was because i copied the cd to the computer using Windows Media. I'm going to work on it tomorrow. Not feeling up to par today. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, that's the problem -- you copied them with Windows Media. The other files are indeed MP3's, it's just that Windows Media thinks they "belong" to it (or probably Winamp does now that you've reinstalled). Rest assured that when a file suddenly thinks it belongs to another program, it hasn't actually changed anything about the file itself, only its associated applications.

No that's wrong... when you copy tracks from a CD to your computer using Windows Media Player it makes them .WMA files they are STILL .WMA files... and she STILL needs to convert them... this isn't a file association problem which is obviously the direction your looking at... you're talking about icons when I'm talking about extensions... all she needs to do is convert those files to MP3 then burn them

Maybe I wasn't clear. Indeed the 12 files she copied herself with Windows Media are not MP3's. However, the "other files" that worked with winamp (and came from Morpheus, Bearshare, etc.) are MP3's.

Oh okay I see what you mean... but I will let cha know WMAs work on WinAmp too... and you CAn transfer WMA files over Kazaa and Morpheus... I don't exactly LIKE them but I found one while doing a search... its not listed under audio though its technically "OTHER"
