I think there are 6 ways to reach first base without hitting the ball:

1. Walk
2. Passed ball
3. Hit by pitch
4. ?

i'll take the easy ones:

balk

awarded first base for catcher interference

awarded first base for pitcher throwing a spitter or scuffing up the ball (probably a term for this)

pinch runnig for the man of first

Can you reach base on a balk? I thought they just awarded the runners one base. Balks don't come into play when the bases are empty.

actually, the answer is probably "one. by crossing home plate"; but if not these are some ways that can happen

balk -- my pat answer to any quiz

bases loaded walk

driven in with a hit

steal

passed ball (would that also be a steal?)

balk...batter doesnt get first on a walk

catcher interference- batter is awarded first base but has to swing the bat in order to get catcher interference called

spitter...pitcher is ejected. no help for batter besides a called ball or strike

pinch running...can only sub once a game, thus you could only score once unless you stayed in the game but then you would have to bat and have to be hit by a pitch 2 times without swinging the bat.

damn, i'm not doing too good at this. did get 2 (catcher interference and pinch running) of the 3, right? can't figure the last way. i guess you could run over and stand on first base on your way out to the field. or maybe a box of candy would work.

the question was simply what are 6 ways to reach first base without hitting the ball -- not sure what you're trying to explain

don't undertand. does the batter get any help or does the count stand where it was when the spit is discovered?
