I've started up Atkins again today. Starting out at 221. Who else is dieting? Haven't heard an update in a while.
I'm just barely over the Mendoza line. I could stand to lose 10 or 15 myself. Not enough to go the Atkins route. I just need to go on the eat less excercise more diet.

I'm really using Atkins to improve my eating habits, more than anything. I was really good for about 6 months the last time I went off Atkins, just because of the structure.

 Improve eating habits? You mean you eat primarily meat normally? I used it (Adkins) to get down to a better weight and then watched portions and eat more foods that were good for me (fruits and veggies) and less meats and fatty foods
gonna start again today. had lost 5 and have gained it all back. must lose 20 lbs.

If you losing weight for health reasons then go at it but ain't no way anyone should lose weight just to look better to other people.

Like taking my own lunch instead of eating out. Freedom fries are a weakness. No snacking, no sweets. That kind of thing.
I'm on day 12 of Atkins. So far I've lost 1 pound per day. Drinking lots of water and generally feeling great. DH has lost 19 pounds so far and is managing his diabetes like a charm.

Don't know Builder--you fit and I am fat. I wouldn't mind knowing how I would look fit but could care less what other people think what I ought to look like.

That in itself testifies to the fact that we really should eat the Atkins way...it's amazing what the foods you eat really do to your body.

Don't use store bought Taco Seasoning. Loads of corn starch in that to make it thicken. Use your own chili seasoning and red pepper, some onion and garlic salt if you have it.

for the last 3 months, I've worked out at least 3 days a week, eaten' a very heart healthy diet, which basically is whole wheat stuff, organic stuff, NO hydrogenated oil, and much less sugar. I've lost 14 pounds, and look like I've lost about 20. I feel good, and nobody told me I was fat before I started losing. I feel fantastic.

I read the book. Checked out the website, and decided I would take his advice, but not follow his diet. No processed sugars. Less fruit. No starches or grains. I done it before and lost almost 60lbs in a little over a year.

eating healthy and working out every day for 2 months = lose 30 pounds
not working out for 1 year and eating like there is no tomorrow = gain 40 pounds
= its about that time again for that 2 month diet and exercise regime

what I dis-like is fat -asses that make fun of other fat-asses. For instance, a big fat guy saying "Ooh, gaaa, I wouldn't date her cause she is fat" or a fat woman saying "he would be okay if he lost some weight."
In this world it has always been "you need to bring some to get some"
I would never use the word "fat" to hurt someones feelings to their face unless they opened the door first.

Read the book. I also use a few online resources. My deal is, if it ain't on the foods list, I ain't gonna consume it.

Ditto. I've just been on the low fat plan, trying to keep my fat grams under 50 a day, and working out 3-4 days a week. I was up to 235, I'm down to 223. Only 1 coke a day, lots of water, and cut out french fries which I used to eat EVERY day. I'm shooting for 200 by the end of the year. Only bad thing I've been doing is still drinking a few too many beers. If I could cut that out I'd probably drop another 5 lbs. pretty quick, but if I cut out everything I'll end up giving up.
I'm glad I'm tall. :)

here's a question I've always had about atkins that I never found the answer to:
on a lot of atkins products, you'll see the carb count and they then reduce it by the number of grams of dietary fiber. Why is this? Can't I eat a candy bar and take a couple of fiber cons with it to cancel out the carbs? I know you can't, so why does atkins do this?

Mrs. Hasbeen has lost 40 lbs. (steroid weight) over the past 6 months on the "Weigh Down" program, based on the book.
I've lost 15 lbs. over the past 3 months going to the gym 5 days per week, doing nothing but cardio vascular stuff for an hour. I started at 295 and am down to 280. My goal is to get under 250 by my next birthday. I ain't been under 250 since I was 19. :(

Do tell. I've gained about 20 lbs from being on Prednisone for the last year and a half for sinus/allergy/asthma crap that I can't get over. I blowed up like a tick. What's this "weigh down" you speak of?

There is an additional book based upon the Atkins diet. It involves flax oils and some other suppliments. You can eat limited amounts of fruit and the combination of vegies, fruit and proteins are important. You also drink 2 liters a day of watered down cranberry juioce concentrate. The concept is your liver is the fat burning center and you detoxifie the liver with the juice and suppliments. Three tablets of milk thistle a day is also part ot the plan. Nancy lost over 5 #'s the first week. I started today. You pee constantly.

I'm sorry, Muff. Prednisone is pretty good for what ails ya, but it does carry a price. That's the same steroid that blew Mrs. Hasbeen up, too.

that's the fat flush diet....basically it is atkins but you supplement with antioxidents and "cleansers" for the liver to allow the liver to do its job getting rid of fat. Instead of drinking the cranberry juice (and all of the carbs) I buy cranberry juice extract pills at GNC (the do the same thing). I actually unintentionally did this diet when I did atkins because I've taken milk thistle, cranberry, and grape seed extract for years.

I take 200mg of milk thistle 3 times per day, 200mg cranberry extract 3 times per day, and 300mg grape seed extract 3 times per day. All of them are in capsule form and are standardized so I don't get a massive dose.
I basically just take them in the morning, after my 1st workout, and then before going to bed. I drink more diet sodas than water, but yeah, i drink a lot of fluids each day.....about 10 liters/day...combination of diet mt dew, dt cherry coke, water, propell, and dt 7 up.

Around two months ago, I did Atkins for around a month - and didn't lose a thing - not one pound. So, I started on the high cardio/low fat thing - (no more than 25 grms of fat per day and a minimum 30 minute high cardio workout six days per week, with `relaxed' walking in between), and I've not lost a thing. I've cut out fast foods, chocolate (on occassion though, I'll have a small piece - but that's it) - and still nothing. So there you go - that's my update - :(. Not for lack of trying - I can assure you. For those that are doing well - keep at it :)!

He also drinks 10 gallons of diet drinks, which with caffeine and artificial sweeteners are deadly.
Caffeine being a diaretic is terrible for you in quantity.
The sweeteners in most diet drinks (and many of the protein drinks) actually still triggers an insulin response, so it may not carry calories, but it makes the rest of what you eat stick to you more. More importantly, it's also a nerve toxin, shown to cause serious problems in quantity, especially if it is ever exposed to substantial heat (which breaks down the sweetener into some even more toxic components).
That said, I still drink diet coke, but a lot less than I used to.
And since this is check-in - last year I was 205. I'm 185 now, exercise a lot, and heading slowly toward my ideal 165.
Like science said, it's a lifestyle change, not a diet. Atkins diets, like most others, never work in the long run, as you can't maintain that eating regimen. Read the testimony to that here... Large weight gains and weight losses are TERRIBLE for your system, much better to just go Puttingood style and be happy with a bubba-burger belly.
you're so right. it's a lifestyle change. that's the only way it works.
I started atkins yesterday, as I stated in a couple other threads.
I am riding my Mountain Bike 6 miles in the morning and 100 crunches. Going to work......Then I'm playing in the yard with the boys for an hour in the evening, with another 100 crunches before bed. Next week, I'm starting back with the free weights. High reps low weight.
