View Full Version : Yet another Atkins thread...
Anybody still on this? Larry? Normanniner? Vor?
I have this scale at home and it's been pretty good to me despite the fact that EEL has been telling me for weeks that it's off. He weighed himself on a scale at work that is used to weigh the products that need to be shipped. I would just tell him that the scale at work was off. Well, we go to update our registry this weekend and we are picking out scales. He says, "see if this one works". I step on it and realize that i have been tricked into seeing my true weight (10lbs more than what i thought). Now, i have 3 months to lose as much weight as possible. Started this diet yesterday and i already feel nauseous. And it doesn't help that i have a half eaten Caramello bar from Friday sitting in my desk drawer. oh well. i'm determined. Guess it's time to check out these Bubba Burgers you fellas talk about.
All I can say is I feel your pain. I figure spare tires don't go well with a tux. And the SO's stress level is off the charts.
I'm sort of on the atkins diet all the time. I eat some carbs on the weekends.
if you haven't read the book, I'd strongly suggest you do so. I've seen a lot of people think they were doing Atkins but in reality they didn't know what they were doing.

You can lose 10 pounds in a couple of weeks easily. Some lose more than others, but 10 pounds in two-three weeks is very common. Three months is a long time to be full-on Atkins. You could lose a lot of weight in three months.
i'll get the book. Read everything that was on the website and printed up all the important stuff. Is their website as informative as the book?

20-25 is the goal. I don't want to diet for 3 months. It will kill me if i have to completely give up margaritas. if i can lose 20 and just stick to a healthy diet from that point on, i think it will be good. I recall Sly saying that for him, Atkins was a stepping stone to a more healthy living.

thanks for that bit of advice though. :xyzthumbs: i won't feel quilty if i take a swig of Dr. Pepper from time to time.

My parents started Atkins about 2 weeks ago and it is going well for them. They say that they aren't missing the bread and potatoes yet; however, I don't know if I can do it or not. I am planning on giving it a shot starting next Monday, so let me know how your first week goes. My dad did tell me that he felt like complete crap for the first two days, then, he felt like he had more energy.
How about this - instead of using a diet that is known to be very unhealthy for you, why not try exercise and reduced caloric intake?
It's amazing what that will do. Less processed/refined sugar, increased exercise, and overall slight reduction in caloric intake and you'll melt off weight. Atkins is dangerous for your heart - it definitely helps people lose weight, but so does chemotherapy.
How much is chemotherapy? Sounds like an easier way then the diet and exercise part.

I'm down 10 pounds, but weekends are keeping me from losing more. It's not that eat more, but the quality drops.

like bootay said, cutting carbs out of your diet is not healthy. high protein is great if you work-out and still get some carbs, but high-protein alone is a risky situation.

it's going ok so far. the caffeine withdrawal is causing me to have a bad headache, but other than that. Was never a big fan of potatoes, but what i'm gonna miss most is the ice cream and tortilla chips.

Whooaaaaa, hold on there... when I say cheat, don't cheat with soft drinks. Soft drinks have like 45 grams of carbs in one can. Pure sugar. Try an avoid them completely.
You'll have to go "hard-core" for two weeks without cheating to prime the fat-burning pump. After that, you can have a couple of beers on the weekends and all that, but just go back to watching it on Monday. Once you reach your goal, you can then figure out how to maintain. But the weight will come back quick if you go back to eating sugar all the time. you will have to break your sugar dependance completely to keep the weight off. I'll tell you what though, after avoiding sugar, you'll have more energy and you won't have the hunger cravings anymore. Your insulin levels will be stable -- no spiking which would lead you to mow out on that Carmello bar. :)
got it. i did purchase some diet sprite, but noticed it contained aspartame (atkins promotes splenda). i quickly put it in the storage closet. out of site. out of mind.

off the subject a bit. but your ice cream reminds me of something i'd like to pass along to everyone. for those of you that work out, a small bowl of ice cream right after a workout and before the protein shake will do wonders for getting that protein where it needs to be. good reason to keep ice cream around.

I think I will be fine without the caffeine, since I drink water most of the day. I can probably survive without the potatoes; however, going out to eat and passing up the rolls will be VERY tough. I'm going to give it a shot starting next week, since I know that I will be photographed WAY too many times at my wedding.

one alternative to Atkins is to just chop off a leg. Depending on your weight, you could lose about 25 pounds instantly, plus you can eat all the carbs you want.

It works
I lost 10 pounds in about 2 weeks, now down to 175 from original 195.
You gotta go by the book, and do it for life.
Start with less than 20 carbs a day for two weeks and then gradually add back untill you stop losing weight to find your ace, (target max intake) that you can eat without gaining.
I now have a good carb at dinner everyday w/ no gain.
Caffine free diet coke has no carbs. Splenda intead of sugar in ice tea, NO FRENCH FRIES OR CANDY BARS.
Michelob Ultra Baby, only 2 carbs

I've been on it for almost 4 weeks and am down at least 15. I found it the hardest during the first two weeks. I still crave some foods when I see them, but really don't want them if I don't see them. I came to a point one day where if I saw one more piece of meat, I was going to throw up. That passed quickly as I stuck to the salad and sugar free jello (which has absolutely NO carbs) for that day. The hardest thing for me is to eat breakfast. I have never been a breakfast eater, so I've tried to find stuff that I like eating and can eat for breakfast.
My mom lost over 65 pounds on it in a little over a year. She's been able to maintain for at least 6 months. I've noticed a difference and really think that people find diets that work for them. This one so far is working for me.

Atkins was not for me. No way I could cut out beer and soft drinks for 2 whole weeks. I lost 11 lbs in the last 3 months with just watching fat grams and exercising.

Thanks Honey! I've found Atkins to be fairly easy actually. I'm not always able to eat the stuff they serve at work, but always have my lunch sack there full of stuff to pick from. I'm not a big egg fan, but I hard boiled some the other day.
They make redi whip (whipped topping) that has less than 1 gram of carbs in 2 tsp. I'm getting some tonight to use on my jello! They even have one that has a chocolate taste to it!!!! I'm going to break down and buy some stuff off the atkins website (if I can't find it locally) like the pancake/waffle mix and syrup. We'll see how it goes.

But of course Silver!!! I bought some Michelob Ultra the other night to try out. If it's gross and disgusting, then it's Bud Light for me and I'll just pick back up without the alcohol when I get back to Kansas.

It's better than Bud Light, IMO. About the only Anheuser Busch product I can drink these days is Michelob Light, Ultra, or regular Bud. But I don't drink regular Bud cause it fills me up too fast. I usually start out with a couple of Icehouses and then switch to Miller Lite.

We just gotta make sure someone has a cooler so I can have a place to keep the beer cool!!! (if we're drinking during the day thing) which I'm sure will change before the actual day of!!! And hopefully I'll be able to catch a few beers on Putt's lawn while I'm in town!!

It is working for me and DH. The best advice I can give is to read the book and drink your water. If you cheat, you set yourself back. We started May 1 and DH has lost 42 pounds and I have gotten (almost) back to my regular size. Losing a job and getting depressed can lead to unhealthy eating.:( Low-carbing has been great.

good question. if you build up a little muscle you can eat damn near anything and not gain weight. can't get that ripped look without proper diet tho. a pound of muscle burns tons more calories than a pound of fat.

you people should be careful. its medically proven that losing more than a pound or two a week is dangerous. your body isn't getting the proper nutrients it needs if its losing at a rate higher than that. its not good weight loss, and usually comes back and brings friends with it.

Diet RC and Diet Rite are both made with Splenda.
Me and My wife started this diet 2 weeks ago. I have lost 12 lbs and she has lost 6 lbs.
That's why taking vitamins and supplements is a good thing. Exercise and changing your whole perspective on eating is our goal here. We're not viewing this as a "diet" but as a way of living. No processed sugar or flour and a good balance of protein, fat and carbs. The way we are eating has been wonderful for DH's diabetes. Insulin produces weight gain and he has been able to reduce his insulin intake dramatically.

I get both those mags and have never read that before. I understand the principal...taking in a few carbs after you workout will prevent the protein from being used as an energy source. However, the carbs from ice cream - pure sugar and lactose - are poor choices because they are the fast burn kind that will spike insulin which means the creation of stored body fat. Plus the fat content in ice cream is high. Given the protein in ice cream comes from milk...it is very good but there isn't enough of it. You'd actually be better off drinking regular old milk because you'd get the right/better amount of protein, less fat, better carbs, and more H2O.

that jello sounds good too, Coops. I'm so over eggs and cheese right now. Was never a big fan of meat either. Plus, i've been feeling extremely nauseus the past two mornings. I just feel icky. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich just looks good at this moment.

no, you just have to read the carb content. Blue Cheese, Ranch, etc - cream based dressings are usually fine depending on the manufacturer.
