I decided to see what I could get a loan for. $1000 down (my parents for half and half on my credit card - which I would have used to fix the taurus). $187/month. Yes. Mrs Photo had a breakdown when I brought it home and we called my parents and my mom told her they would give us the $500. I feel bad taking money I know they can't afford, but in a way they have done a lot more for my brother.

I don't know what they were smoking when they pulled up the numbers. The figures they were giving me was for $11,900 + interest of course. I supposedly got $4000 off because of the ad listing typo. KBB says the car is valued at $10,500. I am financing it for 60 months to keep my payments down. I will likely freak out today when I get the insurance for it, since I have only been paying for basic liability insurance on a POS 90 Taurus.
They also tried to sell me GAP insurance. I didn't take it. I would have bought a 3 year-old car from a private seller in the paper and that would not have had GAP. It a gamble.... I really don't plan to total this car anytime soon. If I did, then I would file for the value of the car, and if I loose any money on it, then I will just have to keep paying on the difference. Seeing that this is not a new $25,000 car (as the dealer used in his example), the difference would certainly not be as much. :p

Get a used honda. Get a 73 VW Bug. Get a book about cars and look at the pretty pictures and make the "broom broom" noise.

so you actually bought this car? wow
What's wrong with kids today? This is a perfect example. Someone that has NO reason to be driving anything over $2000, probably should have a cheap scooter, but instead gets credit FUCKED by the dealer and buys a piece of shit that looks (ahem) "good" on 60 month plan. Within 2-3 years, that thing will be falling apart with 110,000 miles, and that loan will still be huge. Meanwhile, you've tied up whatever finances you've got, incurred new credit card debt for the downpayment, and now can't do the one smart thing every american should do - buy a HOUSE. Even if it's small and really cheap, it's an investment, not a guaranteed loss like a car...

excuse me? you sound just like my little sister, Kristy, when she was younger. She would complain about all the stuff my parents did for me and my other sister. Looking back now though, she has been given a lot MORE opportunities that me and my other sister, Kim. It doesn't matter to me if my parents did a little more for one sister than the other. It doesn't matter to Kim either. But, Kristy, made a big deal about it. Now, my parents (my mother more so than my father) feel like what they do for one, they should do for the other two. Thus far i've received a new computer (of which i'm reimbursing my father for) and an electric toothbrush. They even gave up a Saturday to work in the yard with us and purchase all the mulch and plants we needed...of which i was completely greatful. My parents do this because they want to, but i am an adult and am independent. We live within our means. If we want something and can't come up with a downpayment, that means we can't afford it.
Give your parents a break. They should be looking forward to those wonderful golden years and a relaxing retirement. It's ashame they may never have that.

My payment is $178/month. I have really, really bad credit, and I am lucky to get any kind of loan for any car. This will certainly rebuild my credit... or destroy it if I can't make the payments. There will be significant sacrificing and budgeting going on. Looks like I will be eating ramen for lunch every day. That's $3.00 a month, instead of $5 a day. I might splurge and take a real lunch (deli meat sammich, chips, etc) to work a few days a week. We have the money, we just have to change our spending habbits.

you need to get out of this deal right now. how are you going to afford maintainance? trust me on this, it is the opposite of a sweet deal. save 178 a month for 6 months then buy a junker that you can put 178 a month is repairs into.

It's like watching a really bad train accident.
If your payments are 178.00 and you've financed for 60 months - based on the sell price and what you're ACTUALLY paying for it - it's like a what - 3,000.00 dollar difference? If you have very shitty credit and a low annual income - that's actually not TOO bad - I've seen people upside down a lot worse than that. I, myself, wouldn't do that - but I think in your case - you definitely need something dependable that ain't gonna break down on you every couple of months. So, unless this car is a lemon - it should give you a few good years before you have to try and get out of it anyway - and 178.00 a month is chump change unless you're working at Hardee's or something...

C: Because the car is a piece of shit, he'll never be able to sell it for the amount he owes, particularly since he's driving off the lot with THOUSANDS in negative equity. THOUSANDS in negative equity.
D: He made it our business by constantly talking about his financial problems. This thread makes it pretty evident that all of those problems are self created. He's finacing a shitty sports car on a goddam credit card. We're not talking about an economy car, which would still be rough considering the IMMEDIATE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN NEGATIVE EQUITY.

This is a telling paragraph in the thread, and one that Photo should re-read:
PHOTOGUY SAID:
You do have a point. You have to establish credit somehow. It is important to pay ontime every time. I was careless in college and I got every credit card that was offered, starting with store cards with 26% interest. I maxed every one of them, and then got a discover card to pay for the things I couldn't afford, like food, gas and even rent. I was working just to pay off my cards.
I eventually fell extremely behind in my payments because I wasn't working enough while I was in school, so I got a visa card to help pay my bills. I took out a huge cash advance, which had a higher interest rate. I found myself with a debt of over $15,000 in addition to having a new 95 Dodge Neon to pay for, as well as 3 student loans totalling over $8000. I went through credit counseling for a year and got nowhere with that. I finally consolidated all of my cards with one big loan with low interest.
Once I got out of school, I worked my ass off with three jobs - washing dishes at Denny's from 5 to 8am, moto-photo from 9 to 5, and then a supermarket from 6 to midnight, often working all three in the same day. Sometimes I would have an evening off during the week, but I had to work a shift on the weekend. Living at home with my parents really helped out because I didn't have to pay for rent or food.
Now, I only have a Capitol One card with $700 balance and I consolidated my 3 student loans into one with a lower payment.
I still have the worst credit and I can't qualify for a car or house loan at this point. I make sure to pay on time on my card I have and I can't miss a student loan payment since that is a government loan, and there are more serious consequences than just a late fee.
In retrospect, I wish I had never had all those credit cards and I should have just lived within my means buying only things I could afford with cash. In a way, I think credit card companies are evil and they are all out to get all your money by giving you a little of theirs. But using credit cards responsibly is esential in building your credit for the future.

I own three cars. I paied a total of $2100 for all three of them. Two of them are running right now, and the third unit would run, but I let it sit for seven months. Buying cheap cars is way better than buying a new one. Well, it's better than buying a newer one if you can't afford it.

Get the newest ford probe you can afford. Get it financed, it can happen. Then you'll still be in a two door, gay ass car that can be found in an array of weak ass colors (sorry Voy, I thought the color was worse than anything)... actually was well built... and is a ford product. It was once called "the best car nobody bought" by like car and driver or automobile.
still thinking about that 91 ford taurus (sho?). that thing is faster than fred on dick. my hardest part with it is the whole ford thing. it looks more like a jap car but it is a f-o-r-d. ewwwww. oh and toophy you'll be happy to know it is white.
i guess you got that credit card they sent ya huh pg. somewhere in that thread you said you only have $700 left on that one card. $700 didn't cover what you charged for this car:(

People that put others down usually do it to make themselves look better. There has been some good advice given here. I applaud someone trying to be helpful but not someone who tries to make themselves look better by trying to make others look like losers.

Its called tough love. Some people just don't listen to heartfelt advice. Hence they repeatedly put themselves in bad positions. Maybe when delivered in such a manner that it makes him feel like shit, Photo will realize what a total moron he is.

I don't know...maybe.
In all honesty, I remember his post about credit, which Meat found and I find it hard to be gentle on such blatent disregard of reason and responsibility. It was just too obvious to let slide.
I have seen a lot more cruel things said and done around here than giving Photo some grief on this thread. My comments were not made just because I could smell blood as I hope you know from any of my comments made anywhere else on this board.

Well just the recent posting of if he won the lottery he would share it with people on the board. Was this realistic? No. Is the lottery a smart thing to invest your money in? No. But there are all kinds of different personalities and I just take Photoguy as having a generous heart.

i just read this whole thread.
patti, i think everyone jumped on this so fast because it's such a wrong move. it's just inconceivable how he "allowed" this to happen. i mean, he has a kid and a wife and he's talking about eating ramen noodles every day just to be able to afford the payment.
plus, they are moving to a different state -- there will be start-up costs there. his insurance will go up. god forbid that anything happen to his kid to where they need money.
the general rule that i've always heard is that if you have to spread out the payment over 60 months, you can't afford the car. and your house payment shouldn't be more than 1/4th of your income.
PG obviously has a problem with money. it's well documented. he just doesn't have any direction. he sees something that he wants, he gets it. and that's gotten him into deep financial trouble.
what he needs is a family financial planner -- and possibly some counseling on the issue. it has to stop.
i think everyone is basically in shock that he did this.
at least, that's how i read it.
I'm not doubting that Larry. I just don't think insults and bashing are the way to help.

i think that there were probably wiser choices for spending that much $$. like a car that's more fuel efficient and less prone to require repairs.

where is pg anyway? someone better go look along side of the road. did he let anyone know what route he was taking?
This is a good example of the sometimes conflicting nature of the board.
If it's for sharing opinions, then this thread meets that criteria. Everybody throws theirs in the ring, and nobody has to deal with the drudgery of diplomacy or decorum.
If the board is for friendship, this thread is fucked. Since he already bought the car and never asked for anyone's opinion before doing so (or after), one must assume that the guy is just excited about having a decent car and was looking for people to share that with. The proper thing to do as a friend is to be supportive. You don't have to lie to him and tell him you think it's a great move. All you have to do is tell him congratulations and good luck and assume that if he wants your opinion that he'll ask for it.
The bullshit is the whole "tough love" thing that some of you are trying to play off. Since he already bought the car, it can serve no use to him. My personal feeling and experience is that even before he bought the car, telling him he's an idiot for buying the car is not a positive act of a friend. Degrading someone so that they do the "right thing" may or may not make them do the right thing, but it's always degrading. Being degraded for your mistakes or ideas is what helps people to stay under the thumb of others, which is one of the criticisms levied at PG in this thread.

Mrs. Photo speaking................
Ok..........I have read most of what everyone has said. To a point, I agree with some of the things you all have said. Now you all can listen to me.
1) PG works his ASS off and he needs a car that is reliable to get him 50 miles a day to work (to and from)
2) If we had the upfront cash $1000-$3000 we would have bought a used car upfront.
3) Why buy a used car for a grand or two and then put another grand or two into repairs?? I think that is stupid!
4) With our credit, we will not find a car for under $150 a month
5) We don't live outside of our means. Not that it is anyone's business, but let me give you the run down. How far do you think $2800 dollars a month goes?? $725 for rent, 500 for daycare, my car payment, electric, cable, water, sears, capital one x 2, cell phone and I did not even add in groceries, gas for the cars etc.
6) I want PG to have something that makes him happy. After reading the reviews, I do have concerns.
Anyway, PG and I have deceided to give the car back, run the taurus into the ground and hope for the best. Once again, thank you for being the supportive people that you are.

something in a good car in a good situation will come along soon. Sacrifice for current debt is acceptable, but sacrifice to gain more debt is too big a burden. If you can consolidate both situations into something a little more easy to swallow you'd be a lot better off, especially credit debt.

PG here
I went to Keffer Dodge yesterday after going to many other dealerships in town looking for a 2-4 year old car financed at $150/month for 60 months. We can afford that. I told each and every dealer that. I looked at 4 cars at Keffer: a Geo Prism, Ford Focus, Pontiac Grand Am and the Mercury Cougar. Yes, the Cougar was the most attractive and appealing car out of the selection and the price was about the same as the other cars. All of the cars I have looked at have all been about the same price and mileage, but some were 1999, others were 2000 or 2001. The year makes a HUGE difference in financing options.
So, I picked the Cougar and we had to go through the entire process, including signing paperwork, registration, fees, down payment.... all before knowing what my monthly payment, interest rate and terms were going to end up at. That is what they call a "Spot Sale", and claim that is common process in selling cars.
I AM NOT BOUND TO THIS CAR unless I agree to the final terms offered to me once the loan is officially approved. I told the finance manager what I needed in a payment. He said he would shop the banks and the worse case scenerio would be $178/mo for 60 months at 18% interest. I told him to get the payments down, even if it means lowering the price of the car.
At Harrelson Ford, I picked out a 2000 Mazda Protege with 66,000 miles and $500 less than the Cougar. Yes, that is high mileage for a 2000. The car appeared to be in perfect shape inside and out. I even had my father-in-law inspect it with a fine tooth comb (he has bought many many cars in the past, and always gets what he wants) At first Harrelson wanted $1500 down and $230/month. After 5 hours, it was down to my Taurus as the down payment and $150/month. HOW DID THEY DO THAT?? Well, unfortunately, another salesperson sold the car to someone else right before I signed for it... even though I was told I was first in line and "first come, first served". I am sure they sold that Mazda for more than I was going to buy it for.
Harrelson has been calling me all day trying to make a deal on another car for the same amount we agreed on... even after I told them I had found another car. The salesperson says she feels bad about what happened and the dealership would do whatever it takes to earn my business. Now, I am sorry I turned them down.
Keffer Dodge has displayed the absolute worst customer service and sales tactics I have EVER seen. I have never been run throuhg so many circles and hoops while not getting any straight answers along the way. I talked to the general manager and the business manager tonight about my experience at their dealership and constantly compared Keffer to Harrelson, saying how the salesperson and the managers were continuously working with me and I did not sign ANYTHING except the authorization for the credit check. They provided actual numbers (not hypothetical) on a few different cars, allowing me to review my options in deciding which car I was going to choose. Everything went great until they sold my car to someone else when I went home to get my trade-in.
Keffer dodge is still pushing the deal to go forward, asking for paycheck stubs and refferrals. I told them I am coming back tomorrow after work to return the car, holding the keys until my $1000 is refunded. Having the management directly involved now, they may try to work something out on another car. I told them to show me some numbers on the other cars with nothing signed. We will see what happens.
At this point, I am leaning toward driving the Taurus into the ground. It could last a week, it could last a year. The radiator is broken, I think the alternator is busted (I just replaced the battery) and the head gasket is leaking. There are other minor things that need to be fixed, and will likely surface soon. BUT, I do not have a car payment. I can put $200 a month into repairs and know exactly where we stand on the Taurus. We know the original owner and have the service records. If we buy a used car, we have no clue what might go wrong with it.
As Mrs Photo said, we cannot buy a $2000 car. We cannot finance that. It has to be no more than 4 years old with no more than 70,000 miles to meet the financing requirements. After returning this car tomorrow, I will have $1000 cash. If I could find a decent used car that would last at least a year with no major repairs, I would do that. My first car was a 1988 Yugo, for which I paid $500 cash. I drove it for 2 years and never once had it in the shop for anything except tires and oil change. I sold it for $800.
At any rate... I am pissed off, frustrated, and feeling pretty damn stupid at this point. Mrs Photo and her parents said it was a good idea to get rid of the Taurus asap and buy an economical car with low payments. I jumped a little too fast.
I will get NOTHING for the Taurus, so I will drive it while taking my time shopping for something else and putting a little money aside all along the way, so I can afford to buy a car when a good deal comes along down the road.
Thank you all for the tough love and honesty. Truth hurts, but it has been a learning experience.

Toyota Corollas. Bootay has one - and he could afford a great car. I gotta buddy just drove one to the ground. If the dentral lab buys a car, it'll be this one. Matter of fact, If I wasn't a car slut, I'd sell my BMW and buy one, and save about $7k per year in depreciation and expenses.
I found several (http://www.cars.com/search/used/cc/standard/results/multiple/fs_search_results.jhtml;jsessionid=K2AY42CYUFVPJLA ZGJBJPRI?aff=charlote&_requestid=297865) that meet the above requirements. Cheap insurance, Reliability, they aren;t as slow as you'd think, and they are cheap as shit to drive and keep on the road.

One last piece of advice..well actually two
One, never ever tell a car salesman what payment you can afford. You need to quit working with the two salesmen you have been working with because they already know what they can take you for. By them knowing your payment ability you have lost all bargaining power. Negotiate the price of the car first and then see what the payment comes out to. If too high continue negotiating or walk away.
Two, never ever do business with Harrelson Ford.

Also, pick the car that you want FIRST. If you walk into a dealer and say 'I can afford x per month, what cars do you have', then they will pick the cars that make them the most money.
Pick a make and model, research it, and then find a dealer that can sell you a good one at a good price.
I would reccomend a '99 or '00 Toyota or Honda. From what I saw, the Toyotas are less money.

Let me ask y'all a question.... When I show up on July 5th in a mercury cougar, am I gonna get my ass kicked? :(

Here's the deal
If I am approved for the $8770 loan at $178/month (or less) for 60 months, I am bound to the contract. The finance representative lied and said I had the right to decline the offer if it was not low enough. I signed the contract that had the highest possible payment on it. If the interest rate is too high, or the bank approves the loan for only 48 months, the contract is no good because it would not be within the terms stated on it. There is a chance I will be approved. There is also a good chance I will be declined.
This car is valued at $10,500. I have "purchased" it for $8000. The banks will like that because it has $2500 positive equity right from the start. If I am stuck in this contract, I can sell the car and make a profit, or trade it in for another car and still come out ahead. The NADA trade-in value is $8500. With all of the additional features in the car, it would be worth more.
Mrs Photo has decided to see what would happen if she cosigned on the loan. With a now more than doubled household income, the banks are sure to approve the loan with a lower interest rate, thus making the payment less. The general manager has decided to give us the option to see what the payments will be with just me on the loan, and then both of us on the loan. If I am declined, we are out. If I am approved, I am stuck. If I am stuck with the contract, Mrs Photo can be added on and make the payments significantly less, down to something much more affordable.
Here's the cool part. If I am approved, the general manager decided to let me choose another car on the lot if I want to. Something at equal value, but possibly newer and with less mileage. That will help the financing and make the payments even lower. The only car available at this point is a 2000 Geo Prism with 40,000 miles. The manager said he has some more good used cars coming in next week for us to look at. With the approved loan and binding contract, we have to choose a car on the lot.
Now, a Geo is not quite a Cougar, but Mrs photo says we can look into getting a waranty on the Cougar if the payments come down low enough. I have read all the reviews on the Cougar and it seems somewhat discouraging. The Geo may just be a more reliable car in the end since it is made in Japan and serviced by GM. We could get the payments down to $130/month.
Right now, I am still driving the Cougar, and I have it until the deal is final. Maybe I can total the car and collect $10,500 from the insurance, making a $2500 profit, turn around and buy a $10,500 car. :D That wouldn't look suspicious would it? Shhhhhhhhhh:quiet: you didn't hear me say that. ;)

That car isn't worth $10,500. You paid right at Dealer retail according to Edmunds, which is more accurate than anything the dealer will tell you.
Here is that pricing (http://www.edmunds.com/used/1999/mercury/cougar/14113/prices.html?tid=edmunds.u.mipmake.pricetable..2.Me rcury*)
Just FYI.

Go ahead PG tell us how you gonna screw those hick car salemen out of that car and sell it for a profit. seem like meat has found that if that car has an unfortunate electrical fire, you're gonna owe keiffer 3000 bucks.
