The thing to remember about AC is they really don't play in a power house conference. After Reynolds and Freedom it's ususally wide open. I think AC will be like the last two seasons. They will go as there lines goes.

The NW4A has improved a little since Crest joined back in '93. East Burke has a chance to be better as does McDowell this year. I would love to see the Chargers back in the NW4A with Reynolds and Freedom. That would make a very nice con.

I don't even think ACHS will beat Wilkes Central this year. WC will be greatly improved. I can't say the same for AC. This may be a tough year for the likes of Chris Deal and Tom Harper.

first of all...ya'll aren't in that weight room when we are...ya'll aren't on that field at our practices....and ur all going to feel stupid when we win conference this year and beat your precious patriots and rockets....yeah they're good, but you don't know what we've got coming up....with the likes of Daniel Walker, John Rose, Brandon Kinnaird, Calvin Teague....there's many more i can name....it's gonna be a challenging year for the entire nw4a because we're all rounding out to be about equal...you'll all shut up though when the cougars shock the world...I'm tired of hearing that we're gonna suck and all that crap....that's all I've got to say....peace

Keep these negative posts about the cougars in your mind and use them to fuel your workouts and your desire to win no matter what. Talking to Coach Harper and Coach Deal I have been surprised to see that Alexander Central has become a very well coached and constructed team, and that they are ready for the season to start. With the new weight room they have been lifting alot during the off-season. Every kid that attends on playing football is in that weight room everyday getting better. Alexander Central has had it rough in the past and have not been the greatest team but they have just started with there new program. I strongly believe in these boys this year and also in every single one of the coaches, with the offense showing MUCH improvement and the defense just getting better everyday. I would not be counting out these cougars just yet, I really think that they have the most heart out of any team I've seen in a while and I can't wait to see if these cougars come and show what cougar football is all about!

Coach Harper and Coach Deal are 3 real good coaches.


I know them both pretty well and I saw all they did when they were at Freedom.Sounds to me Gator must have a kid who sits on the bench and doesnt play alot.They can turn the program around if given a chance and get support,something Harper didnt have at east burke.

If Gator thinks he can do better than he needs to go to college and get a degree and than become a coach.

btw unlike one coach i know at ac,They dont cry about the score being ran up on them or say the other team has a horseshoe up there butt.

I've said it before AC will go as there line goes. It's been that way since people started playing this game. AC has had some fine skill people mentioned but they can't run or throw when there is no hole or there on the ground.

First off, let me say that I agree that Chris Deal and Tom Harper are both great coaches. I've known them both for several years now and have become pretty good friends with both of them. Nuff said.

The problem at AC isn't coaching. The problem at AC is a lack of talented athletes. Sure, I think AC will improve somewhat, but being viewed as a top contender in the conference is laughable. AC will lose handily to Reynolds, Freedom, EB, and Watauga. Thats four big loses right there. The only games I see them having a chance in is against Wilkes Central and South Caldwell. Hell, didn't South give them a run for their money last year?

I wish AC the best this coming season for the simple fact that I want my friends Chris and Tom to do well. AC will improve as long as they are coaches there. But unless AC can start reeling in some talent from other places it will remain a lower tier program that can count on a thrashing from the aforementioned schools.

how does anyone who doesn't coach or go to AC know if we have talented athletes or not...we've got a freshman running a 4.4 and benching 250, he weighs 140 pounds....that's an athlete for you. Our weak point is our offensive line...i personally play defensive end, so i am at the line practices and i see the o-line getting better everyday...what we lack isn't talented athletes, we've got pleny, but what we do lack is size....and that's something that is improving with rising freshmen and sophomores who will have to step up and play hard this year, whether it be on vars. or Jv. saying that it's laughable that we be a top contender in the NW4A truly offends me...when people try to compare us to other teams and don't know anything about it...i understand that you all have to go by our past...but don't be too hasty about what u say about us....u don't go through what we do every day to make our football program better...not only football but every other sport we play...i know freedom and reynolds will be very tough games...and i'll be perfectly happy if we lose and gave it everything we have....but to say that there's no way we'll beat mcdowell or watauga is obsurd....they are decent programs but it is not feasable to say that we are definitely going to lose to them...and speaking of last year's south caldwell game....i don't know what happened other than we played like garbage....so i'll leave you all with this...oh and to all you offenses out there...be ready for the hit squad this year...we're comin

Keep on fanning the flames under AC's heels guys they need all the incentive they can get. Coaches biggest job is to motivate their players and bring out their hidden talents, you guys are making their job easier. GO HIT SQUAD GO!!! You guys get beefed up this summer, looks like everyone counts on the cougars to lay down next fall that counts in your favor.

I can tell that you do not have athletes at AC every time I watch an AC game. Look, I'm not cutting you or your program down. I'm only stating the obvious. As I said earlier AC will be improved, but not to the point where they will compete for a conference title.

One more thing. The problems at AC stem from more than just an undersized O-Line. AC grossly lacks in the skill department as well. Furthermore, the AC defense is average at best. If you are an AC player the best way for you to handle this is to let your talking be done on the field, not on some message board. If AC turns out to be as good as you say I will gladly eat crow at the seasons conclusion. Good luck AC.

Funny thing about this thread is that I thought that AC was going to be pretty good this year. Gator, what do you know? They played a lot of very young guys last year, many of which probably were not ready to play varsity ball. In a sense, they were very much like McDowell (who also play TOO many sophs/frosh last year). Deal?, what a great guy. I know him personally. He has his head screwed on right. He will get the job done. Interesting thing about the NW4A is that McDowell, EB, and Central all tend to mirror each other. Usually pretty big along the line. Not too fast at the skill positions. Usually try to overpower you. From what I've seen in the last couple of years, all 3 of those schools have sigificantly more TEAM speed that in recent memory, and all (with EB possibly the exception) are trying to play a little bit more of finesse ball than the power game. Whatever happens to you guys, good luck in all games except the one in Marion. As always, that game (McDowell/AC) sets the tempo for both team's conference schedules. Have patience. It will happen.

I've got a feeling this season will be one of the wildest in a long time because of all the changes in the NW4A conference. AC Reynolds was said to have lost over 25 seniors from last year. East Burke seems to have a lot of faith in there new coaching staff which should change a lot with that program. Wilkes Central should be greatly improved, going off what i saw from their gameplay last year. They had a lot of intensity and seemed to be on the same page most of the time. Alexander Central should have a break out year. They've been way over due and things just didn't go their way this past season. They will have a good senior class this year that will have good leaders and a great work ethic. The attitude for the entire athletics program has changed greatly from past years with a renewed passion for winning. Coach Tom Harper has taken control and almost single handedly changed the atmosphere at Alexander Central, not only with athletes, but with every person there. This could be one crazy year and i'll be keeping a close eye on everything in this conference!

i wanna know y u hoestly dont think that Alexander can pull out championship season. sure LAST year Alexander lost to AC Reynolds and Freedom by more than a hop skip and a jump but with the exception to them and Mooresville they team lost by a total of 16 points and aproximately 3 inches to the rest of the teams they played LAST year. But thats all in the past and the Cougars of the earlier years have been resurected by the coaching staff and by all the downsizing of not only other skools but of there own fans. and as far as the player talent is concerned... haaa! i dont think u want me to start. Alexander has 2 of the top returning receivers in the conference and 2 returning running backs both run better than a 4.5 in the forty and neither of them will be a senior this season. as for defense...
that will be our strongest point with divion one prospects calvin teague at free saftey and daniel walker at defensive end. the Cougars lead the conference most of last season in all defensive departments and finished the as the number 2 overall defense... although the o-line wasnt all that big last year i have say that much improvement has been made and the offense coordinator has a nice little surprise for those teams that r to play the Cougars. so let that settle any more disscusion about Alexanders lack of talented athletes or skill players and if u still got beef about it POST IT.

I admire your enthusiasm regarding the up and coming season for AC football. However, I just don't agree with you. Where were these 4.5 guys last year? Please do not attempt to insult my intellegence and assert that these guys who were 5.0 flat last season now miraculously run under 4.5. I think there's a word for guys like you who regurgitate falsities: embellishment!!!!! That's chronic BS'er in case you don't habla. I hate to keep on beating a dead horse, but 3-8 or 4-7 is the best that you and your -4.5 pals are going to do.

It appears that your last post was edited due largely in part to your inability to communicate in a non-profanity laden manner. I realize that you want AC to do well, but I do not think you need to take it the extremes of cussing people who simply disagree with you.

I thought I was very articulate in my prior posts regarding the reasons why I do not think AC will even sniff a conference title or see post season play. However, I must not have been. Therefore, I will write it out bullet style and ultimately spell it out for you:

1. A lack of quality athletes. AC has not had a blue chip skill athlete since the Scott kid. He had a great junior year and stunk up the joint his senior year. It attribute his success in his junior season due to his relative obscurity.

2. AC Reynolds, AC Reynolds, AC Reynolds!!!!!!!
3. Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!!!!
4. The pool of talent that AC has to choose from is sub par. Think about it. Do you really think that you are going to find similar talent to Morganton, Hickory, and Ashville in Taylorsville and Bethlehem?
5. Most 1,2,3A schools have their way with AC. What makes you think that AC can hang with year in and year out 4A contenders like Reynolds and Freedom.

There you go, 5 reasons why AC always be an average at best school as it pertains to football. I'm sorry if the truth hurts.

The question that still begs is: "what ya gonna do when AC and Freedom go wild on you."

we really do have 2 guys running in the 4.5's. I don't know about better...but they could possibly do it...we are constantly working on our speed...the cougars are showing up at the 7-on-7 passing games with intensity and athletic ability that is unmatched by the teams we've faced...the only team who has beaten us is Bandy's...who, i'm not positive, but i have been told they were in the game for the 2A State Championship..i dont know if they won or not...but they're a dang good team. Just don't be so sure of yourself about how we're going to turn out....be ready to be surprised.

I'm not sure how Freedom will be this year, probably as good as usual. But I don't believe AC Reynolds will be up to their standards this coming year. They lost over 25 seniors this past year and i don't see how they could possibly come up with suitable replacements for that many people. The leadership couldn't possibly be there like it was last year either. I would like 2 know how Freedom stands for this coming year. Postal, I think that you are right about AC Reynolds. Losing all of that leadership plus a new coach (even if he WAS on the staff last year) could add up to a few struggles. Notice I said a few. My friends at ACR say that the freshman class last year (this years sophs) was very strong. They finished in a 3 way tie w/ McDowell and E. Burke (although I thought that McDowell won outright somehow; I was later corrected). On the NW4A prediction thread, I picked Freedom to finish 1st over ACR. Freedom is due against those guys, however McDowell has Freedom right where they want them this year, playing at Freedom, where McDowell has won the last 2 against what I thought were significantly better Freedom teams. I really do think that it will be Freedom/ACR in 1-2. However, I also think that you will be able to throw a blanket over 3-7, unless someone like E. Burke or McDowell gets hot. Watauga relied too much on Cobb last year, and S. Caldwell lost a bunch of seniors. The real wildcard in the NW4A in my opinion is the team that this thread is about, Alexander. They could make some noise, or they could be inconsistent and finish near the bottom. Time will tell. In all honesty, this could be one of the most interesting seasons in recent memory due to all of the unknowns.

i dont know how much u followed our season last year, but of the teams that played hickory and lost to them we were the closest to beating them, which we were doing until the fourth quarter. coach david elder even said publicly to the hickory daily record that we were the most improved and possible the most under rated team in the state. after the game hickory players were comeing up to me and the rest of my teammates saying that they were sorry for bein rude and some even said that we should have beat them. davie county wasnt a fluke either... the stats prove that as a fact. and the only reason wilkes central had a remote chance at one point was cuz coach deal wanted to FOOL with them and to try out some fairly new plays. coach harper said to us last year that last years seniors were the only really talented class he had seen since he had been there and that the underestimation of the running game and over estimation of the passing game would never ever ever happen agian especially to EB. youll know its not a fluke that the cougars are comin for the conf. title when we prove in 35 days that we mean business. if u still got beef POST IT.

Let's see, Coach Deal "fooled around" with WC to try out new playes. You are absolutely without sense. I know Chris Deal and can honestly say that he'd never do that.

I never said that AC would not compete with some teams. I never said that AC wouldn't go down without a fight against some teams. I did say, however, that AC would have 4 very difficult games in a row that have the potential to get ugly. It might be a different scenario provided these games were spaced apart, but they're not.

Perhaps you should consider that going 3-8 or so in the tough conference that you play in isn't such a bad thing. Perhaps if AC were in a different confernce the outcome might change. However, it isn't and AC is in for a long season.

Well lets start by saying one thing. They will win more than 4 games. But them 4 games will one only 1 conf. game and that is South C. Because I know that AC will not beat Freedom and ACR and EB because of there Line on both side of the ball. EB will run the ball down AC throat and Freedom and ACR will pass all over the Safety's and Linebacker's and Just don't think AC will have a chance to beat ACR, FHS, EB. I know some that came from AC last year and came to EB and he has everything on AC. He has there new Split Back Defense and all there Check play's and all there same Defense that they had last year. AC is going to be the same as last year below Avg. and will make it to the playoff but will get knocked out of the first round. Now to there Coaching. Deal Sucks. Glass Sucks. Mayes Sucks. Turner Sucks. The only two coaches that are good are Fox and Stilwell. To Harper the Best Defense Coach I could every seen but he is not a Head Coach just look at East Burke. just say this EB has something in store for them this Year at AC homecoming and it looks like AC will lose there 5th in arow on Homecoming.

Well the only way i see them doing anything this year is for the great Chris Scott and max Krohn to come back because with out a line I don't think that the Bowles boy can do anything but i could be wrong. He will be looked at all this year. If AC wants to have anything going they better try to run the ball. And if it is true about Lahtham coming back you guys are in trouble he needs to stick with golfing. the only Coaches they have there are Fox, Stilwell, and Millsaps. And EB Player I will agree with you on the Oct. the 10th thing. Because back in 1999 they had it going but they have lost there touch only God himself could help them. And from what I seen in AC passing games and yes guys I ve been watching. It would be hard for god to help them. I just want to start out by saying Deal, Harper and all the AC coaching staff are tremendous coaches. they have the program headed in the right direction but you have to give it time to work. I really think this years team has a good chance of being very good. They will be a little undersized up front but they will know what they are doing, Deal is the best offensive line coach in the conference, Harper and Mays will have the d-line ready.

Now let's get on this personal matter between EB and AC. I have one question to these EB people : What has EB ever done in football ????? what does EB have to crow about???? futhermore as a player that would just make me more hungry for the cavailers to come our house on homecoming. the way these guys are talking we should not even play the game. thay would make me very angry. And another thing i don't understand is that it is July where are these predicitons coming from ? Do you idots want to know the last thing on the cougar coaching staffs mind??? EAST BURKE. They are thinking about camp.

EB will be strong this year, no doubt about it, alexander central does alot of talking, but probably wont get the job done. they ought to get some of those baseball players who got in that fight to play some football. freedom will be awesome as usual. reynolds will be a powerhouse, i aint buyin that they lost that much, i heard as many as 5 returners on both sides of the ball. seniors alone dont win a championship. south caldwell will be, well their usual. mcdowell and watugua will both be respectable

Gator, first of all who the heck is Latham?, one other question have you ever played for Coach Deal and Coach Harper?, they are two of the greatest coaches in the state of North Carolina, and they sure as heck havent hit rock bottom with AC. If you have any kind of Football smarts you will know that it takes more than two years to build a football program, and put in a knew offense, no matter hows coaching. But come August 15th when we beat the heck out of Davie you will see how much AC has improved and how much the coaching staff has taught us.

They don't only care about winning and losing, but also about their players as real people. I have played under each of them and I know what i'm talking about. I'm glad to be here. Some one asked about Trey Hennesse from Freedom. The kid is good. He is just a junior this year and ran tailback last year, not fullback. Trey splits time with Josh Corpening (both are very talented). Not to take anything away from any other running backs in the conference, but these are probably the two best. Freedom will have a lot of holes to feel this year, with the loss of many seniors. Tyler Pritchared, Colt Herron, Chris Leonhardt, Chris Powell, Steven St' Louis, Donald Brown, Chris Jefferson, and Chad Weatherman to say the least. All in all i think this season will be tighter than it usually has been. I looking forward to the AC game and of course FAT FRIDAY!!!!. Good Luck to all teams this year, and may God Bless each and every one of the players

You guys know that Harper is not gonna stop a watch perfectly and he had to slip when that one was ran. I have made it to some of my old football team's games and I have to say that the defense is still the freaking HIT SQUAD. Now the offense, or if that is what you want to call it, is still keeping the same rep that they've always had. You guys are lucky that Mooresville was just about the worst team I think they have ever had. I remember when the score was 58-not enough and I along with my teamates felt embarrassed. I will have to say congrats to the foreigner Gi or however you spell it. You are by far the best player on the team. Kinnard, please quit trying to be Michael Vick Jr.! As for the passing games, receivers keep the pine tar in buisness running because I just bought stock!!! As for the rest of the offense......stay behind the unsung heroes, (you know who you are) and maybe you can get some work done. That's all I got to say about that. I'm outy!!!

Great job by Alexander Central last night in the conference opener. Through all the hard work and dedication to the weightroom, the cougars closed the gap against powerhouse McDowell only losing by 2 this season. I was anmazed atthew gret play calling by the Cougar staff. Like an earlier post before, I truly believe Harper and Deal may be the best two coaches in NC. McDowells team was borderline terrible!!! And still beat the Cougars! Cougars ain't nothing to mess with. Quote on sideline over heard from sideline "OK, MEN, Let's get out their in Bullet formation and run the ball to where McDowell is aliging their defensive men. Now men, this may sound stupid, but my thinking is they will move by the time we get there because they know we wouldn't run straight at them. OK, MEN, Go get'em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If a teams' band plays while they're on offense that can interfere with communication depending on the circumstances. So its actually good strategy to play while the defense is on the field while there are mostly signals being sent. Alexander made a lot of mistakes against mcdowell that they can fix, they'll be aight and ready for this comin friday. And yes #99 played halfway decent ........... almost. He can always do a lil better!

i also think you are forgetting the cougars from the mooresville game....they are an excellent football team and we should have won that game. And against St. Stephens, no they aren't one of the premier football schools but we still killed them. They wouldn't have scored a point on us if we hadn't put in our 2nd and 3rd stringers. We've got Reynolds this week and it's going to be a tough game and we've got to play as well as we've ever played to beat them. But remember it CAN be done. Our problem against McDowell was we came out flat and weren't ready to play. A lot of people say it was because of the off week we had prior to mcdowell, but i'm not willing to make an excuse like that because it was simply that we were not ready to play friday night. 99, I was serious about my comment. You did play a good game Friday. I was also serious about the band. They were great and had some great tunes. From my vantage point, it looked like that McDowell was seriously faster than Alexander, but, as 99 said, that may have been because they were flat. No matter, Central faces a big time must win on Friday, while McDowell gets to see the blinding speed of 1A Hendersonville, a team that they have never beaten. Besides Burns, McDowell will not see a faster team. Postal, playing the band is a great idea, however, many have said that there is a rule that the band isn't supposed to play while the game is in progress. Me, I don't know if there is or isn't. I do know, however, that coach Riggs has asked the McDowell band to NOT play when either team has the ball in the name of sportsmanship. I do know that there have been 15 yard penalties for the band playing during a play, but ......

Again, the best thing the cougar coaches could do is sell Stacker 2's at Wal-Mart. I mean what is the deal with Harper's head, is that a headset or a set of stereo speakers mounted together with copper tubing. The whole coaching staff smells of the adminstration at Alexander. Shorty Bumgarner did a great job of assembling the very best football coaches in western NC according to ACFootball99 and postal. The sad part is AC Football is in it's hayday right now. With this outstanding group of 4.4 speedsters i the senior class, they may drop even below the group from South caldwell next season. The weight room has just done wonders to enhance the sports at AC. Like we said last year when AC set a new state record for NO TEAMS in the entire school going to the playoffs. Get a weight room instructor who cares more about getting stronger than he does about what is for lunch!

:D Obviously there is bad feelings or bad blood between Gator, Catfish, Tip and who ever else is among this group of flamers. So use this as an opportunity to state what your problem is among yourselves and AC athletics / administration. We are all free to state our opinions on this board but this whole thing has gotten out of hand. You guys/girls whoever you are have called our children,parents and fans losers. I think that the coaching by MR. DEAL SUCKS. When you tell a guy that he will not play because he missed Tuesday's practice with a doctors note something tells me you have your mind up your rectum. We all know that if that had been certin ones, it would have made now difference. Yes that's right you have your little (PETS). Well I hope you can make a career with your little pets because you want be coach next year. When I call Jack Hoke and tell him and let everybody else know with the news paper how you curse those guys on the football feild, your day's will be numbered. I heard they are looking for a football coach at sugarloaf for flag football, and I feel like you would have a hard time getting that job.

I can't remember a football coach at AC that didn't curse somewhat. If anything it motivated me to get up a lay a hit to someone. Do you think it gets any easier at the next level (college). By the way, I will be looking for your letter to the editor in the Taylorsville Times in the up coming weeks cause I am sure the statements you made in your post will not get exposure on the front page of the sports section. As far as telling Jack Hoke, I hope you have it recorded on tape cause if you don't it is no more than hear say.

First of all, jumping on this board and bashing the coach is not going to help (I assume it is your) son's position on the team. It seems to me there has been alot of help in losing the games this year. What is there about 25 turnovers right now, if we got points for fumbles we would be undefeated. So right now the boys need a morale booster not team conflict. Missing practice is not like missing class. Missing class you hurt only yourself and you take the extra time to make it up, missing practice you hurt the whole team and there is no making that practice up by running a few extra laps. And sometimes coach's decisions reflect on how a player has treated practice in the past, check on that! As for the language I'm sorry to say that schools hire coaches not "choirboys" and the best way to handle it is to have your son learn a valuable lesson by going by the chain of command. Start with the coach and work your way up until you get satisfaction!! Going straight to the top usually don't get the desired results. Also, tell your son to work on firing up the team next week by taking out his aggression by hitting everything harder than he ever has in practices and run harder and his leadership could very well have an impact on all of the players to step up to curb the language. There is always strength in numbers!! Good Luck and GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Deal is definately a Christian. He goes to a methodist church and teaches a sunday school class. I'm sure acfan didn't mean it like that. Alexander should beat SC along with Watauga but the Watauga game will be a good one. :fight:

no I didn't assume anything about deals religion due to the fact that he was accused of using foul language maybe I should have said choirboy. I totally meant it that religion probably isn't a factor in hiring a coach so don't expect (we should though) a coach to be Joe Religion on the field!!! I personally don't know how he talks to the boys or do I care about heresay to the fact! I have seen coach deal around school requiring total respect out of the boys he deals with and I totally appreciate that. I'm sure he talks better than alot of the boys that I hear when I'm at the school!!

To everyone out there talk about Coach Deal.

Coach deal is a very good at what he does in Coaching and teaching History. If you would ask me if you go to every school in the state and you tell me that not one coaching staff says a bad word every now and than you have to be joking of you say no one has. So i would have to back Coach Deal on this and I know him pretty good if Coach Deal says something the wrong way i know he is not trying to bad mouth no one he is just trying to help you understand thing better SO GO Cougars Beat freedom.
