Uh... Football, No. You have Miami, FSU, and as long as Beamer is there Va Tech but the rest are not consistant enough for that statement. SEC still has claim to that title. You need tradition, fan support, and consistancy of excellent performance.
As far as basketball, no problem with that statement. ACC is top dog.

But what other conference can match the ACC's 1,2 punch of Miami and FSU?
SEC Florida and ???? (Alabama is yesterdays news, Georgia?
Big Ten Michigan? When is the last tiome (before last year that the Big ten played for a national championship?
Pac 10? Recent National championships?

Not getting into the arguement of best football conference, but what has FSU done lately to be considered head and shoulders above everyone else in the ACC? We've beaten them twice in a row. I think what we're gonna see at least for the first few years is UM at the head of the class and about a 4 way shoot out for the second BCS bid.

I think that is more attributed to the ACC playing better... NCSU included than it is to FSU's downfall... when you have A teams a few B teams and a lot of C teams the A team sticks out and is more noticable... now its a few A teams some B+ teams... and still a couple C teams... oh yeah and D as in Dook... but FSU isn't as big in that case... they'll be even more humbled when VT and UM get in

Not sure there. FSU will see better days sooner than later and I'm sure they aren't weary of playing anyone. Most of the time they have plenty of athletes to compete.

ACC......................................SEC
Miami....................................Georgia
UVA.......................................Flordia
Maryland...............................Auburn
FSU.......................................Tenn
Virginia Tech.........................LSU
NC State...............................Alabama
Georgia Tech........................Miss. State
Clemson...............................Arkansas
Wake Forest........................Miss.
UNC......................................Kentucky
Duke.....................................South Carolina
ACC 12th team.....................Vandy
When you look at the con.'s as of today it looks to be pretty evenly matched. Not based on history, but on how the teams are currently doing. If Notre Dame ends up being the 12th team I think the ACC would take the title of best football con. One thing about it, this will make for a great debate over the next few years.
UVA? Why is MSU that high in the SEC? Why are the ACC conference champions THAT low? What are you basing these rankings on? Currently doing? In what? Women's softball?
Based on the last 5 years, try this.
ACC......................................SEC

6th best team in the SEC was 10-3 with last minute loss to oklahoma and last second 50 yard fg to UGA. sounds good

It's official. Welcome to the ACC, Donna Shalala!
SEC is still the ACC's daddy but the gap is closing. The hunt for #12 is on. If we can't get the Domers let's see of
'Cuse or BC pop back up.

I'll give you Miami, VT, and FSU have solid football programs. But to think that the inclusion of Miami and VT immediately makes this the best football conference is a reach. The uniqueness of the SEC is that any one of the schools can be playing for the National Championship, not just one or two teams, year in and year out. The fan base and loyalty is unmatched (consistantly rated as the best places to watch games - LSU, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, etc...). The history of the SEC is football runs deep and I believe that all but three teams have played for the National Championship and I think eight (Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Arkansas, and Ole Miss) have won/shared at least one (http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0002693.html). I don't have the numbers in front of me but I did read recently that the SEC had record revenue payouts to each conference school last year as well. I guess my point is... Top to bottom, year in - year out, SEC football has proven to be the best. Now, all of that being said, I would love to see more head to head match-ups with ACC teams. AND the ACC is definitely a force in college football.

I had them in no certain order. Just the way they popped in my head.
The ACC's top four teams has just jumped way infront of the SEC, but our bottom doesn't even compare. Without Miami, VT and FSU we suck! The Pack is a great story, but so was Duke with Spurrier and Carolina with Mack Brown(?). Tradition doesn't happen over night and sometimes it never happens IE. Carolina and Duke.

On the whole ACC vs SEC thing:
The ACC has 4 teams in ESPN preseason Top 25
8-UVA
12-Maryland
15-FSU
16-NCSU
While SEC only has 3.
4-Auburn
11-Georgia
19-Ten
However, SEC's 3 average a 11.3 ranking while ACC is a 12.5.
BUT.. figure in the two new kids and ACC's 4 teams become 6 (Miami @ 2 and VT @ 9) with an average ranking of 10.3.
This isnt including possible 12th team teams Pitt (14) or ND (20).
Just a few observations.

Exactly. The ACC is the best conference in football and basketball.

It's not where you start that matters, only where you end up...
And you can't look at this until 2004 when VT and Miami enter the league and start adding extra losses on to each of the other teams in the league. There is a big difference in 9-2 vs. 7-4, which will happen to the NC States and Marylands of the ACC. And I just don't see you getting ND (more than likely they go Big 10). And Pitt. has done little to nothing in football between Marino and last year. My guess for the 12th ACC team would be WVa or Louisville.
ACC will definitely be top 3 but not numero uno in football.

The best conference in football is debatable. If its debatable then who knows who is the best. The ACC couldn't even argue that in football before this week.
I think you're gonna find the ACC making a very hard push for ND and getting them. Louisville is going Big East and although WVa makes some sense - I think the ACC wants more from #12. ACC will offer and ND will eventually accept IMO.
To me - these super conferences could make it easier to get a playoff in football.
Play the conference championships to get top 4 seeds. (after dropping the team limit to 10 to allow Big 10 and Pac 10 to get a game)
Have a one game playoff before the top 2 bowls with top 4 teams - winners play winners.
Not a big playoff (teams wise) but the national champion would have to win 3 huge games to win it all. There wouldn't be a lot of arguement who was the best team.

I agree with Shocker on this one... the BCS is going to be reevaluated in 2005... that was gonna happen one way or another... and if that happens Notre Dame will probably lose its BCS exemption... which means if they want a SURE BCS shot they'll have to go to a conference... their choices are limited really to the Big 10 or the ACC... I'm thinking that they've already been checking out the ACC with the help of NCSU's Mary Anne Fox... I think her involvement will play into this big time... she's a possible vote needed to allow ND to join on BOTH sides... plus she's already that inside voice that can talk with friends on the inside and convince them to go... travel wise its not their best option, but in the end it will bring the most money... the number 2 option is Louisville and if Notre Dame says no I have a feeling Louisville would say yes... if Louisville joined the ACC that's be another kick in the jimmy to the Big East
